TYL TRAILHISTORICAL ROUTE111 North Harvin StreetOne and six-tenths miles

Step inside the Sumter County Library at111 North Harvin Street, and you havethe opportunity to learn something aboutalmost anything, and then a little more.Step outside the library walls and walk to-wards the Sumter County Family Courtbuilding. Take a look at the Vietnam andHolocaust Memorials. At this point an-other type of learning begins, perhaps anemotional learning experience.

The Tyl Trail Historical Route providesplenty of opportunities to learn throughour senses, as there are numerous othermemorials on this path. All of them rep-resent a time in the history of our city, state and nation that are too important toforget. After completing this walk, yourview of life in Sumter County may takeon a new appreciation.

HISTORIC WALK OFCENTRAL DOWNTOWNSUMTER129 South Harvin Street

The Historic Walk of Central DowntownSumter begins at Sumter’s James E.Clyburn Intermodal Transportation Center, located in the old, historic Moise Ware-house building at 129 South Harvin Street. The building, originally started as a manu-facturing company, built in 1899, is the re-gional headquarters of the Santee WatereeRegional Transportation Authority, wherea terminal for Southeastern Stages (Grey-hound), is located. #1 MEMORIAL PARK WALK110 N. Salem Avenue | One mileIn the historical area of Sumter, there is a shady side-walk surrounding Memorial Park. Homes with sweep-ing porches, fretwork and rocking chairs remind

walkers of a time gone by. Once inside the park, there is an abun-dance of open green space where visitors can walk, run or be lazy.Amenities at the park include playground equipment, bathroom, drinking water fountain, benches, trash cans, picnic tables and a ten-nis court.

Walk the block around the park, and then go inside the park and walkthe park’s perimeter. The distance walked will be one mile. Parkingis available on North Salem Ave.

#2 Y WALK50 Willow Drive | One mile

This paved walk, starting from the southwest corner ofthe YMCA parking lot, on the banks of Shot PouchCreek, is a true delight for those who appreciate the

beauty of wild vines and native habitat. The stately gate at the trail’sorigin invites the walker to come in and partake of nature’s visualgifts - herons, owls and other birds soaring overhead as they search fora taste of the abundant food supply from the creek.

On the opposite side of the gate, after crossing Miller Road, is a view-ing station. Here the photo buffs may want to gaze downward andawait the moment for just the right picture; it is a good spot for snap-ping a few pictures of sunbathing turtles.

This walk is handicap accessible and convenient to shopping. Hereyou can get your exercise and then easily complete your errands!

#3 USC SUMTER TRAIL200 Miller Road | One mile

Start at the parking lot behind USC Sumter (off ofTheatre Drive). Go to Founders Grove (a circulararea surrounded by palm trees). See the trail post

marker indicating the start. Follow the trail signs and sidewalk mark-ings.

A manual or motorized wheelchair can easily access this entire trail asit winds through the USC Sumter campus. When school is in session, walkers can savor a snack from the campus grill and visit in the adjoin-ing bookstore. All buildings have handicap accessible restrooms andwater fountains. Campus visitors will enjoy a rest at the Peace Gardenlocated between the library and the administration building. On a hotday the spray mist from the fountains at the front of the campus mayoffer a brief respite from the Southern sun.

If time permits, view the USC Sumter website at www.uscsumter.edufor information. The university frequently offers events on campus thatare free and open to the public. Your walk can be scheduled around auniversity activity. There is a covered bus stop at the front of campusthat contributes to easy access to this trail.

The USC Sumter campus is multimodal, meaning that it can be accessedby numerous transportation methods. For example, each public trans-portation bus has a bicycle rack. A cyclist can get off of the bus at thecampus’s covered bus stop on Miller Road, park the bicycle in a campusbike rack and then take the walk around the campus. Log ontowww.swrta.com for bus schedules.

#4 PALMETTO PARK WALK400 Theatre Drive | Three milesThe walk from Palmetto Park, along Wise Drive, toWilson Hall Road, provides a great glimpse of an “ac-tive” Sumter. It starts at the parking area on Theatre

Drive where there are tennis courts, playground, and baseball andsoftball fields. When the walker exits Theatre Drive and starts thewalk along Wise Drive, there is a good bit of traffic. However, alongmost of the walk, there is a buffer between the street and the side-walk. After crossing the intersection of Alice Drive and Wise Drive, traffic is no longer a problem.

Along this route are wide-open skies and walkways canopied by pines, oaksand other native trees. At one point the sidewalk changes into a bridge that

crosses a lazy creek. The walk ends just after passing Wise Drive BaptistChurch, a pretty site nestled amongst the pines.

On the return trip, hungry walkers can take a break and have a mealat any of the restaurants at the Alice Drive and Wise Drive intersec-tion. At the park, there are bathrooms, benches, water fountains, and eateries. You might even catch a ball game or tennis match. There is not much missing here!

#5 SWAN LAKE IRIS GARDEN WALK822 West Liberty StreetThree-fourth miles Enter the Swan Lake parking lot from the main gate onWest Liberty Street. Across from the Visitor’s Center, is

a gated entrance to the lake’s shore. From this entrance, go left to fol-low the trail around the lake.

Lakeside visitors will be greeted by the honking of the geese and maybesome swans on a stroll. At this point you may want to take a seat andrelax, on one of the park’s numerous benches and enjoy watching theantics of the birds. They can be quite entertaining.

The elevator leading up to the bridge that crosses Liberty Street will beon the left (for those who want to add more distance and scenery totheir walk). Just past the elevator is a small wooden bridge that pro-vides a great site for pictures. Continuing the walk, the “sensory gar-den” will be on the left. About half way around the lake, is anotherbridge crossing that leads to a picnic shelter and water facilities. Fromthere, the path stays close to the water’s edge, meanders through thelarge Japanese iris planting grounds and returns the lake’s visitor to theentrance gate. From this point there is access to restrooms, water, pic-nic tables, shelters with fans, a playground, trash receptacles, and the IrisMarket restaurant.

Portions of the trail around the lake are hard sand and gravel and areeasily accessible by motorized wheel chair or strollers. However, dur-ing periods of excess rain or long term dry weather, parts of the trailmay be difficult to traverse.

How much physical activity doadults need to get health benefits?

Adults need to do two types of physical activity each weekfor health benefits:

• Heart strengthening (often called cardio or endurance activity) and

• Muscle strengthening (also called resistance training)

The minimum needed per week for endurance is:1) At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity,

or 2) 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity,or 3) A combination of both moderate and vigorous in-

tensity activity

For muscle strengthening, the recommendation is: Domuscle strengthening activities on at least two days aweek. These activities can involve weight or resistancebands.

Examples of moderate-intensity exercises:• Walking fast• Doing water aerobics• Riding a bike on level ground or with few hills• Playing doubles tennis• Pushing a lawn mower

Examples of vigorous-intensity activity:• Jogging or running• Swimming laps• Riding a bike fast or on hills• Playing singles tennis• Playing basketball
