The Chicago transit oriented development is thinking of reconstructing the corner of Milwaukee and California streets at the heart of chicago. The area right now is an empty lot often used by the homeless

. The southwest side of the site contains a small strip that contains a couple of restaurants as welll as a grocery store. The site is being reconstructed because of the convenient train line that runs through it .

Upon researching this area we realized that traffic throughout the day remains high yet this area seems underdeveloped for the potential it could carry. Judson University professor’s challenged it’s senior

students to bring an innovative yet usefull form of transportation mixed with a business, retail and apartment complexes.

As I was researching and learning about the site and it’s surroundings I realized that the sites overall shapes looked much like sharp trapezoids and uneven shapes or forms. While sketching and finding

original shapes I came upon the idea of an origami shape. The more I found about the origami shape the more it made sense to design these propasal buildings into a similar shape. It was not easy to make

these shapes therefore leading me to take a few days to really understand the concept of what an origami is. I realized that there were many building that looked like an origami shape from the outside but

when it came to experienceing it from the inside it was like walking into yet another plain building. There were no use of these intricate shapes anywhere which disapointed me. I began to think that this is not

an environement or experience I want my clients or property owners to walk into. It was really hard to shape these plans into a workable plan that could also become an interesting place to come home to or

work into as well as shop in.

As I grew familiar with the idea of how to form these intricate shapes more ideas came into my mind as to how I should introduce sustainanle design within these complexes and business buildings.

Having a Sustainable design concentration I was challenged to be able to find a way to make these big buildings work in an enconmic way by reusing the earth’s sources and tranforming them into postive

and inexpensive recycling methods. I decided to make a double skin passive glass system that works in the winter as well as the summer. The exterior of these glass panels are polarized to keep the summer

sun heat out from coming inside and heating the building causing for the air conditioning to be raised which can be expensive. The bent angles of the origami facade been cracked open with shafts that can

be opened or closed depending on the weather. In the summer these can be opened up to circulate the air that comes in through the bottom and be released through the upper vents keeping the apartments

and business rooms that are in the higher of the building cool. In the winter these shafts are closed and upon research the necessary ones are cracked open in order to circulate fresh air while also circrulating

the warm air that is released. The polarized glass retains the winter sun rays within the building helping int stay warmer than other buildings.

Helping the heat problem in the summer a roof garden was set in place in order to keep most of the suns balzing rays out and cooling the

building while doing so. In addition to the roof garden and the polarized double skin passive walls the highest roofs on these buildings have been woven with solar panels. These panels allow for the building to

use it’s own resource of electricty that will run through the entire building and selling the excess that is not used througout the month to the local electrical business. These comes to be seen as very helpful in the

winter when the windshields hit freezing cold allowing to keep the buildings warm without resistance of expense. zTRANSITDEVELOPMENTORIENTED

AIRFORCE VILLAGE CHAPEL The Air Force Village Chapel

was designed after the idea of a

Dove. The dove was chosen to

represent the peace that was and

is being fought for everyday in this

country. Red was selected as an

accent color as a reminder to not

forget those who died in battle for

us. As a multi-faith based chapel

I picked a symbol that would not

interfere with the many faiths but

instead bring everyone together

under one roof. The exterior of

the chapel is very modern as wel

as clean with an organic touch to

it. I brought together large metal

beams that would hold the

chapel’s roof and yet give it the

organic wing-like look that it has.

The sanctuary is wrapped with a

window curtain on the South Side

in order to allow the most light in

late afternoons while the beams

reject the strongest sun during the

day. The North side of the chapel

contains the offices, bathrooms,

and storage rooms with the

offices being the only rooms that

allow natural light in.

Page 9: VillatoroPortfolioUpdated

AIRFORCE VILLAGE CHAPEL The strongest area of the

chapel is the middle where both

sides of the roof beams come

together and is being held up by

a concrete wall. This concrete

wall also is used as a cooling and

heating method since the AFV is

located in San Antonio, Texas.

It allows for heat to retain in the

daytime while releasing at night

when the temperature drops.

The interior of the Chapel

was designed to give a soft, warm

and welcoming feeling to all those

who enter. I chose light oak wood

for the floors and dark cherry

wood for the walls. I wanted all

employees as well as the priests

to feel truly at home when working

instead of that uncomfortable and

cold feeling that most churches

have. The windows have a tint to

them that will darken when the

sun is at its highest.

A rainwater pool wraps half

of the chapel in order to

collect the rainwater and distrib-

ute it when needed. A smaller

pool is placed under the chapel in

order to retain at least three days

of emergency water. Mariah wind

spires are also placed in the site

to help collect electricity.

BAHAMAS PROJECT The Bahamas project was

to redesign a cabin for girls and

boys while integrating conference

rooms on the upper level. A balco-

ny is placed on both the cabins to

allow anyone the freedom to enjoy

the spaces being provided.

Page 11: VillatoroPortfolioUpdated

BAHAMAS PROJECT I placed my cabins across

from each other and also placed

a canopy over the open space

that connects the two areas. I

designed the bathrooms to have

a nature feel to it by making them

out of bamboo and by placing

them in the back of the cabins.

OLYMPIC 2012 AQUATIC CENTER

The Aquatic Center was a proposal

for the Olympics Chicago 2012. My idea

was to be able to bring a multi-use

building into one. The Center would be

used as a place for neighboring schools

and also a place where children could

come and be entertained.

The Olympic aquatic program

asked for a small and a large pool. The

smaller pool would be open to the

public while the larger pool was designed

to have a floor that could cover the

emptiness and be used as a gym.

I gave the roof an organic design

to represent the waves in the water. The

building itself then compliments the roof

as well as the aquatic center.

Page 13: VillatoroPortfolioUpdated

BOATHOUSE The Boathouse project was to design a boathouse

down the Fox River in Elgin Illinois near Judson University.

The program asked for boat storage and parking, a restau-

rant with a café and office settings for administration usage.

The reason for the organic tubing was to represent

a fun sidewalk that could deliver you from one side of the

river to the other including the boathouse and it’s

surrounding places. I wanted to weave the organic sidewalk

form with an orthogonal shape by designing the Boathouse

geometrically.

Page 14: VillatoroPortfolioUpdated

FARNSWORTH

HOUSE The Farnsworth House is

located in Plano, Illinois and can

be found in a very remote area

near the Fox River. The project

asked for a remodeling of the

place since the river it is near

keeps over flooding it and

creating house problems.

My idea was to create an

illusion of the Farnsworth house

being swallowed by the earth and

then being spit up into an organic

shape. I gave the new house a

second floor with the same plan in

order to keep consistency.

Page 15: VillatoroPortfolioUpdated

WALL PROJECT

The Wall projects was one of the first projects where we began to

use the techniques from design one and combine them with actual

designing ideas. We were to make a collage and later extract it into a

third dimensional form.

What I came to present as the final design was a sculpture that

could be entered through the street and underground levels. A whimsical

playground for adults and children of all ages was the foundational

aspect.

EUROPE SKETCHES

AND PHOTOS During the architectural trip

to Europe over summer of 2009,

we spent each day sketching

for about three hours minimum.

This helped our minds to develop

rather than solely depending on

computer-based programs.

Along with sketches we

found photography being

integrated to show another form

of capturing the essence of a

building with the touch of a

button.

Here we find from left to

right the Ponte Vecchio in

Florence, Italy, The Acropolis in

Greece, St. Ivo della Sapienza in

Italy interior and exterior, Sunset

in Rome, and the Paestum Temple

in Italy.
