Could you be our newMusical Director?

Slinfold Concert Band was founded in 1978, as a small villageband. Since those humble beginnings it has become one ofthe most accomplished and popular bands of its type in theSouth East. This success has been largely achieved underthe baton of Malcolm Gay, our musical director for the past 21years, pictured here at a recent concert.

Malcolm’s sudden death has left the band in shock, and anew MD is urgently sought to carry on the band’s tradition ofmusical excellence. We are seeking someone with experienceof directing a musical ensemble who has the vision andenthusiasm to take the band forward. Could that person be you?

The band currently has around 45 players, and performs awide range of music in an equally wide range of venues, bothindoors and out, mainly in Surrey and Sussex butoccasionally further afield. We rehearse on Tuesday eveningsin Slinfold village hall.

If you are interested in learning more about thisappointment, please email [email protected] soon as possible. You can learn more about the band atwww.slinfoldconcertband.org.

Balzac and the LittleChinese Seamstress –Dai SijieThis remarkable little book, published only ten yearsago, is well on its way tobeing regarded as amodern classic – so muchso that it has already founditself on some GCSEEnglish Literaturesyllabuses. While thatmight be enough to put you

off reading it, I urge you to give it a try – believeme, after the first few pages you will be hooked.

Set in 1971, Sijie’s novel follows the story oftwo middle-class city boys, forcibly removed tothe Chinese countryside for re-education aspart of the Cultural Revolution. Guilty ofnothing other than having doctors and dentistsfor parents, they are subjected to punishinglyhard physical work and appalling livingconditions. Two things make their lives bearable – the presence nearby of the beautifulLittle Seamstress, and a collection of books, first borrowed and then audaciously stolen froma friend, which open up a world beyond themountains.

Sijie’s story crackles with wit and humourthroughout – the opening scene, in which thenarrator finds himself playing a tune hastilyretitled ‘Mozart is Thinking of Chairman Mao’ setsthe tone instantly. But this is also a story aboutthe power of words and the power of desire, andas such is beautifully told. Each character isvividly drawn, from the Little Seamstress herselfto the grotesque village headman. Comicepisodes are interwoven skilfully with passages

exploring the transformative power of literature, and before you know it you have reached theinevitable yet poignant conclusion, which will staywith you for a long time afterwards.

Flat Stanley – Jeff BrownStanley Lambchop is a rather unusual boy. Afteran accident with a bulletin board, he is four feettall, about a foot wide – and half an inch thick. Ofcourse, being flat has its advantages – Stanley’strip to California in an envelope is great, and hisbrother Arthur would love to be able to slideunder their bedroom door like Stanley does. And,if Stanley was round, he would never have beenable to assist his neighbour in catching thievesintent on stealing the world’s most famous

painting. But there are downsides

too – while it is great to be akite for half an hour, it’s not somuch fun when Arthur getsbored and leaves Stanleystuck in a tree. People can becruel too, and eventually thename calling gets too much.Luckily, Arthur is on handwith a solution to hisbrother’s problem…

This picture bookmanages to make an

impossible situation seem perfectly plausible, thanks to the matter-of-fact style and simple, convincing illustrations. Ideal to read aloud toyounger children or as a first book for newlyconfident readers, it has stood the test of timesince its first publication in 1968. If it isn’t alreadya family favourite, then it is destined to become one very, very quickly.

A Good ReadJuly’s selection from book reviewer Kath Bennett

Bee-Master Revisited is arevised autobiography ofGeorge Wakeford, celebratedSussex Master Beekeeper(Village Tweet contributor JohnNash wrote about him in theApril 2011 issue, which can beviewed at www.villagetweet.co.uk,click on the Magazines tab).

George’s uncanny expertisein the handling of bees and his service tohundreds of novices and clients earned him a

reputation as something of a country genius. With his passing in 1985, any chance of him

revising his slim autobiography was lost. Hisbook was long out of print and hard to find, evensecond-hand.

Well, now the 122-page book has beenreprinted and Billingshurst resident GeoffreyLawes has added much background detail, enlarging on George’s life story and adding manyearly 20th century photographs.

Bee-Master Revisited is available fromGeoffrey Lawes at £11.95. Tel: (01403) 785799

OlympicsEditorial and advertising enquiries:

The Olympic Games are almost upon us.The Olympic torch arrived in Britain on May18th and is now travelling all around the

country. The route is planned to take in 1,000towns and villages along the way, and isdesigned so that 95% of the population will bewithin ten miles’ travellingdistance of at least onestopping point.

But what is the storybehind the Olympic flame?

During the ancientGames in Olympia,Greece, a flame ignited bythe sun burned continuallyon the altar of the goddessHera.

The modern flame firstmade an appearance inthe 1928 Olympics, held inAmsterdam, Holland, where it burned throughoutthe period of the Games.

The tradition of the relay began in 1936 inBerlin and persists until this day. The torch is lit afew months before the start of the games, inOlympia, at the Temple of Hera. An actress, dressed in ceremonial robes uses a parabolicmirror to focus the rays of light from the sun, igniting a flame. This flame is then carried in afire pot to the ancient Olympic stadium. It istaken to an altar and used to light the firstrunner’s torch.

The design of the torch changes for eachOlympics. The 2012 London torch is triangular inshape – the three sides represent the threetimes Britain has hosted the Olympics: 1908,1948 and 2012. It is decorated with 8,000 tinycut-out circles, one for each of the runners who

will carry the torch, and is constructed of alightweight (but strong) alloy.

The route the flame takes varies according towhich city is hosting the Olympics. In the past ithas been to the top of Mount Everest (Beijing2008), and even into space (1996 and 2000)! It

is carried on footwherever possible, butinevitably has to travel byother modes of transport, including boat and plane. On planes the fire has tobe housed in a speciallamp as open flameswould not be allowed.

As the torch is carriedby relay, each runnercarries it for only one partof its total journey. Theythen light the torch of the

next runner. On average 110 runners will takepart each day, and each runner will runapproximately 300 metres.

Until the 1950s only men could carry the torch, and it took until 1968 in Mexico City before awoman – Enriqueta Basileo – was allowed to bethe final runner.

Carrying the torch is considered a greathonour. Perhaps surprisingly, most of therunners are not athletes. They are chosen formany reasons, often because they haveovercome personal difficulties, or because theyare charity workers.

The final runner is generally kept a secret untilas close to the time of the Games as possible.Previous Olympians mooted as a possible finalrunner for 2012 include Steve Redgrave, SteveOvett and Daley Thompson. Tom Hancock

A‘Billingshurst Has Got Talent’ competition tookplace over two nights and on Saturday 1st Junean excited audience flocked to the Billingshurst

meeting of the small Parish Council Jubilee Committee.Following their successful meeting with members of theTAG youth group and the members of the BillingshurstDramatic Society a talent competition was conceived.

The project support and co-host at the final wasClaire Cutler-Casey. A wealth of talent emerged andfollowing fair comment from a panel of judges, theoverall winner chosen was nine-year-old Emily Falkner,a solo singer with a very beautiful voice.

A cheque for £174.00 is to be donated to Emily’schosen charity, Cancer Research UK.

On Sunday morning at 11am awell attended service to celebratethe Queen’s DiamondJubilee took place at St Mary’s Church.

The Big Picnicplanned

for Sunday 3rd June at Jubilee Fields, hadto be cancelled due to the bad weather. However, at the last minute plans weremade to hold a Family Fun afternoon at theCommunity Centre. Over 300 people enjoyed a varietyof activities including riding the very popular ‘surf-boardsimulator’ and enjoying the large all-ages bouncy castleand basketball shoot-out. Many children joined in theclowning workshops, fancy dress competition, facepainting and showing their skill at colouring in crownsand other royal pictures. The very popular TreasureHunt, Jubilee Quiz and other displays kept familiesbusy while others enjoyed watching the royal Pageantwend its way down the Thames. Everyone enjoyed thisopportunity to come together for a community afternoon.

The committee would like tothank all who helped prior to the

event or on the day and thosewho supported or sponsored

the event, thus enabling itto be free.

Children from Billingshurst Scouts& Guides units took to thestreets of Billingshurst in May in

a Show of Thanks to celebratecompletion of renovation work on theirScout Hut, whose future wasthreatened when asbestos was foundin the walls and ceilings.

Leader and fund-raising coordinatorGlyn Pullen said, “Last Spring we helda Show of Strength here to mark thestart of our Save Our Hut! campaign[Village Tweet, May 2011] At the time, raising the money looked a dauntingprospect. However, we have beenoverwhelmed by the support andgenerosity of the local community.

“We were very fortunate in securing grants fromHorsham District Council and from the Biffa Awardscheme, both of which were crucial in allowing usto undertake the major structural work needed. Wehave had fantastic support from individuals, businesses and community organisations from

Billingshurst and further afield.“In total we have raised over

£80,000 which has allowed us tocomplete the refurbishment and I amdelighted to say that after having beenclosed for over a year, the Scout Hut isnow open again and back in dailyuse – and it is a community facility, notjust reserved for Scouts & Guides.

“Although we’ve met our originalgoal, we will be continuing our fund-raising to replace our equipment, mostof which we lost due to the asbestosproblem, and to allow furtherimprovements to the Scout Hut.

“On behalf of Billingshurst Scouts &Guides I would like to thank everyone who helpedus save our hut – without the help and support ofso many people this would not have been possible.”

Pets / About the houseEditorial and advertising enquiries:

07762 767084, [email protected]

In the excitement of preparing for a holiday orweekend away, don’t forget to makearrangements for your pets! There are several

options to ensure your pet is cared for properly –leave them with friends or family, hire a pet-sitter, or board them.

As a change of routine can be very stressfulto pets, asking a responsible and familiar familymember or friend to care for them may be thebest solution. However, if this is not possible, thenext best thing might be to employ a pet-sitterwho would visit your home to feed, clean andexercise your pet. Be sure to meet your sitterbefore employing them, ask for references andpolice checks and make sure they haveinsurance.

If you decide to board your pet, take time tofind a kennel, cattery or small animal boarderthat will suit your pet. Pay a visit beforehand andcheck that they are licensed, insured, and thatthe facilities are secure, clean, dry and draught-free. Also check that the animals in their carelook clean, happy and healthy.

Whatever arrangements you decide on, besure to choose someone responsible and give

them clear instructions about diet, exercise, medication and how tosocialise with yourpet. Then go andenjoy your holiday, confident that yourpet will be in safehands! Debbie Singh-Bhatti

“The Gold Star Awards recognise and rewardthe everyday achievements of PTAs throughoutthe region,” said Caroline Gaskin, PTA-UKAdviser. “The standardof entries was very highthis year and PTA-UKcommends all theapplications received; tomake it through to thenational finals as theregional winner for theSouth of England in theWorking with the LocalCommunity category isan amazing feat and wewish the BillingshurstPrimary SchoolCommunity Associationthe very best of luck asthey now go through to the final judgingstage”.

The BPSCA has built strongcommunity links with local businesses forthe school and for the educational benefitof the children. Their link with Kavanagh’sBudgens supports the children’s learningin how we use resources, with the verysuccessful Eco-bag as well as developingchildren’s skills in food technology anddeveloping a recipe book. They also forged linkswith Martin Spurrier of Fowlers estate agent, toplant over 60 trees as part of the Jubileecelebrations as well as helping the school toachieve its Forest School status. BPSCA strivehard to bring something different to the school in

addition to all the fundraising events. Theyarranged for Chinese food tasting donated byChina Brasserie 2 for the children in Reception’sChinese New Year celebrations, as well as theCookery Club going to local pizza restaurant,Dolce Salato to learn how to make pizzas, designtheir own, then take it home to eat. The sportsteams all have new kits due to the generoussponsorship of Slinfold Golf and Country Club

Helen Williamson, head teachercommented, “Thesehugely valuable linksare not just benefitingthe school financially, they are supporting thechildren’s education, developing a sense ofcommunity within thevillage and ensuring

that our children grow up with a sense ofbelonging within their village – that theymake a contribution to their community aswell as their community supporting them.We are very proud of our Award WinningPTA.”

Istarted Faces of Billingshurst back inJanuary 2011 as a personal project toprovide an outlet for my interest in

photography. The intention was to stretchmyself, engage withpeople and try andimprove mytechnique. To dateI’ve interviewedmore than 30people and takenover 200photographs. I’vegot to know morepeople in the past18 months than theprevious 8 years.

I’m particularlyinterested in peoplewho are involved with non-profit organisation. It doesn’t have to be an organisation thatworks in the local community, it could benational or overseas. I’m in awe of people whogive up their time to help those less fortunatethan themselves. We all lead busy lives andthe most precious resource we have is our

time. I know times are tough, the financialcrisis has been difficult for everyone but takingtime out to help others is something that wecan all do. I’ve supported Doctors Without

Borders (MSF) forthe past fouryears. Theyprovide medicalaid in crisissituations – armedconflicts, epidemics, famines andnatural disasterssuch as floods andearthquakes.

There are anumber of ofexcellent

organisations in the village. Why not take alook at the Billingshurst Community Websiteand see how you can get involved: www.billingshurst-community.org.uk/local-orgs.php

July is the beginning of the school holidayperiod, and as many people dream of theirannual trip, there’s no better place I’d rather

be than in a garden. Whether I’m surrounded bythe sweet smelling jasmine on a formally plantedItalian hillside, or theheady scent of Lavenderin southern France, orthe gentle aroma of theold English rose, if thesun is shining and I’msat in a space filled withplants, I’m on holiday. Iguess it’s lucky that Ihave a great garden athome, which makes mefeel like that every time Istep into it.

We’re not going on holiday this year as I’mhoping for a great British summer, (support thenation during the recession and all that), sowe’ve decided to holiday at home which Ibelieve is fashionably known as a ‘staycation’.Instead of lining the pockets of our Europeanneighbours, we’re going on a road trip aroundour country to see how many gardens we cancram into one week.

The last time we did this we began our trip inMay, in the Highlands of Scotland, where wewere just in time for the fabulous array ofRhododendrons and Azaleas. The cool dampgardens provide many scenic walks through thewoodland and the smell of the fresh clean airreally does cleanse the soul. It’s as if you cansmell the earthy growth of spring.

After a few months back at home our next triptook us to the beautiful gardens of Devon andCornwall, where a visit to the fabulous Lost

Gardens of Heligan andthe Eden project werecombined with more modestprivately owned back yards wherelots of homemade scones were

consumed! Wethen movedacross the country tostay with friends inKent, ‘The Garden ofEngland’, where wevisited a host of NationalTrust gardens, as well asSissinghurst (famed forits white garden) andGreat Dixter (home ofthe belated ChristopherLloyd), and finally up to

the Cotswolds to see Laurence Johnson’sHidcote and the much talked about privategarden of Prince Charles.

Quite a year and quite a trip, a very Britishsummer filled with afternoon tea, cucumbersandwiches and a G&T. Croquet anyone?Lee Bestall www.inspiredgardens.net

After his Granddad spotted Lee’s greenfingers at an early age, he helped fosterthis love of gardening and at 26, Lee was

given the opportunity of a lifetime during early2005 – the chance to apply to become one ofDiarmuid Gavin’s disciples for a new eight partBBC2 TV documentary called Garden School.“Call it gardening, horticulture or landscapedesign, if I was a stick of Blackpool rock, thoseare the words I’d have running right through me”was the phrase Lee used in his audition, and itobviously worked, as he spent the next fivemonths living at Wisley, the main garden for theRoyal Horticultural Society.

“Diarmuid Gavin whizzed us around thecountry, and Europe, looking at gardens andseeking inspiration, learning plant names andhow not to fall into the trap of becoming ‘a factoryproduced designer’”.

In 2006 Lee set up Inspired Gardens…“I would describe my work as ‘softened

formality’, as I like order and strong lines in agarden, where balance and symmetry areimportant, but then I love to soften the wholething with flexible planting such as grasses andlots of flowers. I particularly like designing

courtyard gardens, but large open spaces wherethe owner will allow creativity are my ultimatefavourite projects.”

Over the past few years, Lee’s favourite clientsare those who show an interest in the wholescheme but don’t get too involved and who trusthim to get on with it. “I’ve never once had anyonewho has not loved what we’ve created, and it’svery satisfying to exceed people’s expectations.”Why employ a garden designer?Due to the increase in well designed outdoorspaces, people regularly employ designers tohelp with their gardenoverhaul. Gardendesigners are basicallylike outdoor architects. They design and projectmanage and are usuallyon site for the plantingstage as this is the phasewhere the garden reallycomes together, it’s thecreative cherry on thecake.Lee Bestallwww.inspiredgardens.net

May has probably been our busiest monthso far this year. It is probably easier to listwhat we have been up

to since the last Village Tweetor I will have to produce myown magazine! We have hadfive sows give birth totallingsome 36 piglets and havethree more due at thebeginning of July; had theadult sheep sheared/shorn(after all these years I stilldon’t know which one iscorrect); hosted a LivestockHealth South-East course onthe casualty pig; purchased abeautiful new saddleback boar ‘Farrell’ fromCheshire; sold some pregnant sows to a newbreeder in Skegness; hosted two pig courses;and hatched even more Lemon Pyle Brahmasready for the Smallholder Show at the end ofJune. We even managed to squeeze our properjobs into the month as well!

We have done rather well at the major showswith our homebred pigs so far and we are still in a

pleasant state of shock: at the Nottingham andNewark show we took both first and second place

in the July-born Saddlebackgilt (young female) class andat the South of England showwe won first and secondplace with two July gilts whothen both went on to take theChampion Saddleback andReserve Champion titles andBest of Breed award. Wealso took first place with ourJanuary-born gilt who thenwent on to win the Young Pigof the Year qualifier for a

place in the final at Hatfield. However, we aremost proud of our son Oliver who qualified for theYoung Pig Handler of the Year finals also held atHatfield. He has worked so hard with his little giltand it was the perfect end to the three-day show.

Magnus and Big HillOnce upon a time on a small farm near Billingshurst …

Magnus still loved going to the caravan, even though Mum wouldn’t let him sleepwith her anymore. He would eagerly jump

into the back of the truck with Bailey every Fridaynight in summer time and it wouldn’t be longbefore they hopped out and went for their firstwalk down the dog walk with all those lovelysmells.

The thing he liked the most was to go toBig Hill. Therewere two ways toget there: one wasup past a stinkyplace up to thegrass bit and alonga grass path on tothe Big Hill and theother was to go upa nice path throughthe woods whichled to the top of BigHill. Magnus likedthis path way best.So did mum. Sometimes they went withthe GermanShepherd Zac nextdoor. Zac was only seven months old but he wasvery well behaved when he was out on theirwalks – he always came when his mum, Kate, called him. Unfortunately Magnus was not alwaysso reliable in that department.

One Sunday though, they went up the pathway, just Bailey and Magnus and Mum because mumwanted to get Magnus better behaved when theywere at Big Hill. A couple of times previouslyMagnus had just looked the other way when Mumhad called and then to make things worse he ranoff to talk and sniff other dogs. Mum had not beenpleased so Magnus now had to wear a long linetrailing after him when they went. Mum had alsodiscovered what Magnus like best. It was not atreat, or a play with a toy or a clicker. He lovedhaving a ‘chimmy chuff’ pat under his very furrychin. Mum had used that reward to get him to waitand come quite successfully. But not all the time.

On this Sunday Magnus had been absolutelyperfect. He’d stopped every time Mum hadspoken to him and come away from other dogswhen she had said “Leave”. Magnus was pleasedat how good he’d been so he was verydisappointed when Mum said “This way,” andturned to go. In fact Magnus was more than

disappointed, he was very cross. He reluctantly followed her down the path

towards the car. Magnus stopped for a little drinkfrom a fresh puddle. Mum strode on past him andcontinued down the path. Magnus stopped andlooked the other way, back up to Big Hill. Hedesperately wanted to go back but Mum kept ongoing. Obviously she was thinking other things

(about what to writeactually) and Baileywas just potteringabout.

Taking a chance,Magnus turned andretraced his steps. Hehurried and reachedthe top of the pathand turned the corner.Just as he did, Mumturned around andsaw him disappear.“Oh no!” she cried.“The little rodent,”and started off afterhim. By the time shehad got to the top of

the path, Magnus was nowhere to be seen. Mumlooked one way down into a grass gully wheresomeone had set up a tent but there was no onethere so she turned left to the path that led up toBig Hill. She looked for a whitish fluffy tail in thelong grass.

Then she saw a hiking lady ahead of her leanover and pick up a rope line. She looked aroundto see who it belonged to. Mum put her hand upand caught her attention. The lady waited untilMum reached her and handed Mum the line. Atthe other end of it was an unrepentant Magnus.Mum thanked the lady profusely and then bothshe and Bailey took Magnus back down the path.Mum really growled at Magnus but he didn’t care.Several times along the path he stopped andlooked back. But Mum called him and although ittook him a moment or two he decided to go withher. He was feeling quite tired by then, so hefinally gave in and followed her like a lamb all theway back to the car.

“We will go tomorrow and try again, Magnus,”Mum promised, “and see if you can do better”.Magnus did not listen to the “do better” bit . All heheard was “We will go again tomorrow”. Magnuslooked forward to that. He really loved going toBig Hill. Yvonne Fleece Photo: Grahame Pearson

If you have been reading any of the Techsections in the news, it’s likely that you will haveread about ‘cookies’. This is due to an EU rule

on how they should be used. You may have readthey are an evil and intrusive spying mechanismtracking your every move on the net – or aharmless device designed to make your life easier.

Firstly cookies are NOT programs. They don’tdo anything at all. They are simple ‘text files’.Typically, they contain two pieces of information: asite name and unique user ID.

When you visit a site that uses cookies for thefirst time, a cookie is downloaded onto your PC.The next time you visit that site, your PC checksto see if it has a cookie that is relevant (that is,one containing the site name) and sends theinformation contained in that cookie back to thesite. The site then ‘knows’ that you have beenthere before, and in some cases, tailors whatpops up on screen to take account of that fact. The good thing about cookies… Some cookies aremore sophisticated. They record links you click, your preferences or they can store what is in your‘shopping cart’. The possibilities are endless, andgenerally the role of cookies is beneficial, making

your interaction with sites smoother. Withoutcookies, online shopping would be much harder. And the bad… The answer probably depends onhow you feel about big business and governmentstoring information about you. There is nothingespecially secret or exceptional about theinformation gathered by cookies, but you may justdislike the idea of your name being added tomarketing lists, or your information being used totarget you for special offers.

In reality, the collection and storage of personalinformation without permission is not strictly legalin the UK. Sites that make use of cookies getaround this in two ways. Firstly, if you read thesmall print in the Terms and Conditions, you willalmost certainly find that by using a site, you areagreeing to download the site’s cookies.Secondly, websites should be telling you theircookie policy prominently on the site.

Almost all web browsers nowadays allow youthe option to block cookies. That means you can block all cookies or, with a little more effort, you can start to pick and choose which ones to accept. Simon Thomas ([email protected])

The summer months are a lovely time for horseriders with cool early mornings and long, lightevenings. What is better than getting on your

horse and going for a lovely long hack?Unfortunately in this modern age many riders have

to ride on some roads to access bridleways and othersafe hacking routes. There have been reports in thepress about roadaccidents involving horsesvery recently and ridersmust do all they can tostay safe and be seenwhile riding on the road. The Britsh Horse Societyestimates there are 3,000road accidents per yearinvolving equestrians.Drivers too must bepatient and take carearound horses.

Invest in hi-vis, the veryleast riders should bewearing is a bright tabard, preferably with reflective strips. These can be boughtat any equestrian shop. If pennies are tight there arebargains to be had in workwear shops that cater forconstruction workers! Hi-viz gives drivers on averagean extra three seconds to see you, which can make ahuge difference to stopping distances and give themmore time to slow down and pass you safely. Threeseconds is all it takes for a car travelling at 30mph totravel the length of a full-size dressage arena! Thereused to be a great deal of prejudice towards riders whowear hi-viz, with fellow riders saying it was ‘uncool’.Personally I would rather look unfashionable and givedrivers a chance to see me rather than risk not beingseen and my horse or myself being injured. There arealso some brilliant items on the market for the horse towear. I always ride mine out in his hi-viz reflectivesheet and I do believe it makes a difference. Hi-vizalso plays a part in off-road hacking making it easier tofor rescue teams to locate you if you should beunfortunate enough to have a fall. Think about takingthe BHS Riding and Road Safety Test. Designed totrain riders to be competent and safe when riding onthe road, this test is endorsed by the department oftransport and can be taken at equestrian centres allover the country.

Please be polite and courteous to other road users. There is nothing worse from a driver’s point of viewthan a horse rider who fails to acknowledge themwhen they have slowed down and passed wide; if youcan’t take your hands off the reins a smile and a nod isstill very much appreciated and helps driver/riderrelations. If a driver does try to intimidate you or is

aggressive or dangerous please, please report it to thepolice and the fill in a British Horse Society incidentreport form that can be found on their website.

Keep vigilant when riding on roads, maintain aneven rein contact and keep an eye out for anythingthat may spook your horse so you can be prepared totake avoiding action; this is where schooling plays a

very important role. To be ableto shoulder in past a scaryobject is a godsend! Likewise ifyour horse is ridden betweenhand and leg then he should belistening to his rider rather thanlooking for objects to spook at!Expect the unexpected: birdsflying out of hedges, flags oncars, barking dogs running upto gates or fences, motorcyclesand the silent cyclists are allpart and parcel of hacking. Ifyou have a young, inexperienced or nervous horseit always pays to go out with a

steady schoolmaster to get the other animal used tothe sights and sounds outside of the yard and to gainconfidence in himself and his rider. Carry a mobilephone for emergencies but never slop along chattingaway on it while hacking. If you see lots of trafficbuilding up behind you please stop and let it past whenit is safe to do so.Drivers. Please pass horses slow and wide and beprepared to stop if needed. Never sound your horn orrev your engine when passing horses. Remember lotsof horse riders are children and teenagers.

There is room for EVERYONE on the roads andEVERYONE has a right to be there whether they are ahorse rider, cyclist, motorist or pedestrian.

If a rider is having a problem they may notnecessarily be able to say thank you when you slowdown but I can assure you they will be very grateful.Cyclists. Please call out to horse riders as youapproach, that way the horse knows you are thereand will be less inclined to spook at you as youpass.

Happy hacking, with some care andconsideration we can all help each otherstay safe on the roads this summer.Jeanette Douglas. SQP, QualifiedHorse Adviser. SPR Centre.www.sprcentre.co.uk

John Nash is a retired, well sort of retired, fruitfarm manager in Kirdford who enjoys scribblingabout life on the farm from the now to days gone by.

Ican’t recall ever seeing in this magazine anarticle on that most Sussex ofgames…Stoolball. So, I consider it my pleasure, nay, my duty, to

put this omission right…It was way back in the mid-’fifties when I first

set foot on Sussex soil that I came in contact withthis mostwonderfulpursuit. I waspassing thelocal villagegreen onesummerevening when Iespied out in themiddle of thegrassy swath agroup of girlsdressed in veryshort skirtsplaying a game Ihad never comeacross before.

I stopped totake in the scene(purely in thecause of gainingintellectual knowledge of course), and was aninstant fan.

The rules are similar to cricket, but different, there being eight balls to the over as apposed tocricket’s six for a start. The ball is akin to arounders ball, in that it is white, stitched andHARD. The two wickets are 16 yards apart butthe target is a square board placed at suicidalhead height. In fact it’s at 4 ft 8 inches from theground, but when a thunderbolt comes at you it’swisest to remove your upper profile from thefiring line.

To emphasise the sadistic side of the feminineplayers, the bowler delivers the ball from abowling crease that is just ten yards from thebatting wicket, in other words, a third of the waydown the wicket! It may be under arm, but it stillreaches the batter at a frightening pace when afast bowler gets going.

The bat looks like a shortened tennis racket, only solid wood with a sprung handle.

Sides vary according to the type of match

being played. It can be a standard eleven-a-sidebut may come down to six or so at tournaments.

Stoolball is a very ancient game with the firstrecord going back to 1450 and it would appear tobe confined to the home counties, with mostvillages having a team at some time in theirhistory.

It was my great delight, back then in the mistsof time, that I had the joy of playing in a fewmixed-sex matches, and from those games I wasmade fully aware of the skill required to master

the techniquesneeded tosurvive anonslaught fromthe formidableAnn Denley, agirl who formany years wasthe femaleDennis Lillee ofthe Stoolballfield.

She had theknack ofplacing athunderbolt of aball an inchfrom your noseas you flailed ina vain effort toswat it away

from your best features.Age is no barrier to playing. Many teams have

members who spent a lifetime enjoying thegame, and still make very useful contributions tothe teams’ successes.

I have to confess that back in those days therewas a lot to say for a young lad like me joiningthe band of supporters that followed a team. There were few cars, so most away games andtournaments would entail the use of a coach forthe team and we would take full advantage of theempty seats to mingle with the femininecontingent.

The journey home after a successful gamecould be – and often was – a delightful event.Nudge, nudge, wink, wink… say no more!

So, if you are not familiar with the game, takenote as you drive past the village greens onwarm summer evenings, and if there appears tobe a crowd of girls scattered across the mowedgrass, stop, and take the time to have a look. Ipromise you will not be disappointed.

Well, I wasn’t anyway! John Nash

out for praise at the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s(WACT) AGM at Pulborough at theend of April.

In front of a large audience ofWACT members, head of themaintenance depot John Smithwas presented with the Jack KingCup, while the John East Cup waspresented to membershipsecretary David King.

After being a member of theTrust for a number of years, ex-REME fitter Johnvolunteered to help with the maintenance ofequipment at the Tickner Heath depot in January2009. “When I retired at the end of 2008 I waslooking for something to do and saw that theTrust was looking for help with maintenance andput myself forward to help,” says John.

John’s role soon extended well beyond helpingout and he has built the maintenance team fromtwo – including himself – to a five-strong groupthat supplies serviceable equipment to the Trust’snumerous working parties and also assists with

equipment for special events.Long-term Trust member, canal enthusiast

David took on the role of membership secretaryin 2004. David, with strong support from wife

Maggie, carries out essentialmembership services for theTrust, as well as organisingdistribution of the organisation’squarterly magazine.

When David first joined theTrust he was involved with theSunday working party andundertook work on BrewhurstLock in Loxwood. After retiring

from the IT sector in 2002, he volunteered topromote the restoration work through giving talksto various groups such as the Women’s Institute,Rotary Clubs and historical societies beforetaking on the role of membership secretary.David and Maggie also help crew boat trips andwith the running of the new Canal Centre inLoxwood.

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee river pageantmay have featured over 1,000 boats but it wasnot the only flotilla to have set sail recently.

The number of boats involved in the annual boatrally fromPulborough toPallingham mayhave been fewer innumber but it was akey event in the aimto restore the Wey& Arun Canal.

Ten boats, crewed by 16people and onedog, launched onthe River Arun fromPulborough in a bidto reach PallinghamQuay (at the start ofthe Wey & Arun Canal) and preserve the right forfuture navigation.

“The aim of this annual event held in May eachyear is to ensure that when restoration of the Wey &Arun Canal is completed, there will be no legal hold-ups in enabling the boats to use the River Arun,”

says organiser John Taylor-Cram. Work started on restoring the Wey & Arun Canal

in the 1970s and the annual event organised byJohn will play an important role in proving that

navigation rightshave been used.Organisation of thecruise to the headof the River Arunused to beundertaken by theSolent and ArunBranch of theInland WaterwaysAssociation but TheWey & Arun CanalTrust has agreed totake on the co-ordination of thistraditional boat rally.

“The event was timed to make the best of thetides, but we still had enough time to stop off at theWhite Hart at Stopham Bridge for some well-earnedrefreshments” John commented.Sally Schupke, Chairman, The Wey & Arun Canal Trust

The Barns Green Half Marathon has won amajor national award as the ‘Most ImprovedEvent’ in the UK. The Award was presented

at the Runners World PersonalBest Awards 2012 at aglamorous ceremony in Londonon 19th April.

What makes these awardsso significant is that each isdecided by the people whoreally matter – Britain’s runnersthemselves. There are two racecategory awards and thewinners are worked out byaveraging feedback ratingsposted on the Runners World website after runnershad completed the events. The ‘Most ImprovedEvent’ category is for the race that scored thebiggest improvement in its ratings, compared to itslast running, on the Runners World website in the12 months from March 2011 to March 2012.

Commenting on the award, Barns Green HalfMarathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said,“This is a huge honour. We always knew that wegenerally get excellent feedback on variouswebsites from our runners but to actually emerge

as the most improved race in the UK is quite someaccolade. It is particularly rewarding given thehuge number of races that now take place in this

country, most of which receivesubstantial financial help andother support from majorcouncils and local authorities. Our race is organised andmade possible by a largenumber of volunteers whohave all done a wonderful jobin making the event the greatsuccess that it is”.

Entries are open for the2012 Barns Green Half

Marathon which will take place on Sunday 30thSeptember. An exciting new innovation for thisyear will be that the magnificent marching bandfrom Christ’s Hospital School will be playing as therunners go through the school grounds after aboutthree miles of the race. Another new initiative is theintroduction of a Barns Green Junior/Fun RunRace for younger runners.
