VILLAGE MARKET April 1 st Village Market what a great day, with the WWII jeeps, and the adults and children with their funny Easter hats, and thanks to “Smart Arts Face Painting” for their great facial designs. The line from Picton to Mittagong was considered a steep gradient too challenging for locomotives. In 1919 a deviation from Picton to Mittagong was opened to reduce grades and the original line became the “loop” line. ANZAC LINK

My sister Kaye (Daintith) and I (DarrylStarr), are descendants of RobertJoseph Stewart, Ernest George Stewart, and Glenn George Stewart ofColo Vale, whose names appear onplaques at the War Memorial in front ofthe Colo Vale Community Hall. Wewere recently contacted by TanyaChalker-Holz who brought it to our attention that the Memorial existed andwe visited the site a fortnight ago.

We would like to congratulate the residents of Colo Vale on such a wonderful project in honouring its residents who saw overseas service.

It was very moving to see our greatuncle, grandfather and uncle's namesamong those listed. Mrs Chalker-Holzwas researching her great uncle's warservice when she realised his and ourgreat uncle's service numbers wereone apart and that they registered onthe same day, sailed off to war togetherand were both killed at Gallipoli on thesame day.

It was through her determination tofind a connection to Uncle Robert thatshe finally tracked us down.

To the Colo Vale community we saythank you.

As the Colo Vale community gears up for another Anzac service at the Memorial, the following moving storyhas come to light.

COMMUNITY NEWS

The local Colo Vale Petrol Station andConvenience Store at the corner of Elmand Railway Avenue has a DevelopmentApplication into Wingecarribee Council forthe erection of two new shops, being a detached building from the existing.

The owner has had conversations withthe local community who have expressedtheir need for more retail services — food, newsagent, chemist, post office, etc. andthe owner feels that this development willhelp fill part of that request with the cafe/coffee, fast food convenience variety.

Information has come to our attention of other local servicementhat served their country, but untiltheir full service records are availablefor clarification of their military unit,we shall withhold their dedication.

Freedom’s LamentIt’s just a simple service in our village town

When the bright stars have faded and the moon is down

With the sweet smell of morning in our little Colo Vale

With sleepy eyes and stiffened limbs the morning sun we hail.

There isn’t a grand parade of marching or a band

But a friendly lot of folk who watch and standThere isn’t any bugler to play a sad “Last Post”

But this is when we remember our worthy friends the most.

The mind wanders to the deserts and sun that scorched the air,To the rugged jungle ridges, the fear, noise and despair

Remembering the jokes and laughter that eased the bursting guns

But now it all comes back again standing with “me chums”.

It’s just a simple service, with words that remain unsaid

With a thousand fleeting moments going through your head

It’s not the glow of glory that this day leans towards

But the memories of your friends, who died for such a cause.

That we might live in freedom, so appreciate your lot in life

For those brave souls that gave up theirs so we could live without strife

To love, to pray, to work and play, they gave us this right

So protect this land and way of life, with all of your might.

GARDEN TIPS with George

They are a cool climate fruit that requiremoderate winter chilling to produce areasonable crop but also like someprotection from hot drying winds andample moisture. They like well drainedsoils with a good water holding capacity, with lots of compost or other organicmatter and like a PH of 5.5 - 6.5.

The plants are bushy, thornless yetprickly and send up long upright canesfrom underground rhizomes, which creepout from the main plant. Raspberrysuckers bought from a nursery or dug upadjacent to an existing plant may beplanted in the winter months when plantsare dormant. If planting along a fence as ahedge row, plant 30cm apart, any closermakes weeding and pruning difficult.

During the first year a few new caneswill develop from the roots and theseshould be tied to supports in summer.Remove the first flowers, as leaving themon will weaken the root system. Cut off 10-15cm in winter to encourage the bushingout of the plants. When growth begins inspring more suckers will appear, theseshould be cut off leaving only about 10 orabout 12-14 per metre length of a row andonly 30cm - 40cm wide.

There is nothing like making desserts orjam from the fruit you have grown.

Happy gardening everyone, ‘til nexttime. George

JUST “PLAIN” ARTISTRYA local Colo Vale aviation enthusiast,

Richard Leech, retired Ansett Captain, isbuilding one of the smallest twin enginedmanned aircraft in the world, the CRICRIMC15. There are only 250 of these planes inexistence, and only 3 flying in Australia.

The plane was designed by a Frenchaeronautical engineer Michel Colomban in1973. The name Cricri comes from thenickname of Christine, one of his daughters, but it also means a “cricket” or “circada” inFrench, andthe buzzing ofthe enginesdo sound likea swarm ofcircadas.

Richardbought theplans fromFrance for justunder $1,000, and parts to build the planefor Euro 9,600, but with necessarymodifications and adaptations, it has blownout more than he had expected.

Constructed from aviation alloy glued tohi-density foam (Klegecell), the twin engineplane will weigh only 81kgs when complete,

and is capable ofcarrying 80kgs inweight (Richard fitsthe bill nicely).

The planes fueltank, which his legslay over, holds 23litres of a 50 to 1 oilmix with hi-octanefuel, giving a range of 500kms.

Each of the twinengines is 15hp, butwith the extractorexhausts equates to18hp, each engine

generating 115cc. There are two

spark plugs toeach engine, anda membranecarby whichoperates even when the plane isupside down. Richard at this point, mentioned that the plane is capable ofaerobatics ... that could be quite a

“regurgitating” experience. With 27 inch fibreglass propellers the

plane will take off within 400 feet, and itsairspeed, 245km per hour.

When completed the body of the planewill be polished alloy, and the wings paintedwhite, but Richard will be adding a touch offlare with a coloured pinstripe.

Six years in construction and hopefullyfinished within the next couple of months,so if you hear a buzz over the region soon,it could be Richard on his maiden flight, wearing his warm long johns and fleecyjacket as the plane is not lined.
