B.B. King returns to Mississippi hometown

Blues superstar B.B. King is returning to the grounds of the old Mississippi Delta cotton gin where as a teenager in the 1940s he worked as a tractor driver.

On Wednesday, the now 86-year-old King will be back in the tiny farming town of Indianola, Miss., to headline his own homecoming celebration. It’s a tradition King and the community have enjoyed al-most every year for more than three decades.

King and his band are scheduled to perform on the grounds of the former cotton gin, which is now a community center and part of the B.B. King Mu-seum. King is also expected to perform later Wednesday night at Club Ebony, a music joint where King has performed throughout his career that he restored and donated to the museum.

Busta Rhymes has released an impressive set for diehard plans on his 9th studio album Year of the Dragon. It’s Flipmode General’s de-but album under his new label Cash Money Records.

Will Nicki Minaj win crossover success on ‘American Idol’?

Here comes the latest chapter in the American Idol judging sweepstakes, in which an unlikely candidate is entered into the com-petition – hip-hop’s very own pop life princess, Nicki Minaj. Yes, rumor has it that the accomplished rapper/singer is very close to sign-ing a deal to become a judge for the 12th season of Idol.

Prior to Minaj, a lot of big names have been floated to replace Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and perhaps even Randy Jackson on the show.

Aretha Franklin was reportedly a contender. Pharrell Williams was supposedly being considered, and teen heart throb Nick Jonas actually started a half-hearted Twitter campaign to win a seat.

Mariah Carey recently accepted a seat on the prestigious panel, announcing, “I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.” Read: I can’t wait to leverage my appearance on this show to raise my professional pro-file.

That said, Idol makes perfect sense for Carey, who needs all the exposure she can get as an aging pop star. However, Minaj’s involve-ment in the show is very unexpected. Here is a woman who is stead-ily climbing towards the apex of her career; wouldn’t she be better served with time in the studio to make up for her underwhelming Ro-man’s Revenge album, and concert dates to appease her ever-growing army of Barbies?

Yet Idol has the one thing Minaj craves — a crossover audience and massive pop culture presence.

How would Minaj fare on the judging panel? Well for one, she might as well brace herself for the critics who feel she doesn’t have what it takes to judge singing – she is, after all, a rapper. However she is also a LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing

Arts alum, so that’s something, right? Minaj has always struck me as someone who really wants to be considered and respected as much for her singing talents as her rapping skills, so no doubt she will take her Idol gig very seriously.

My real concern: Who’s going to be the mean one?

A judging panel is nothing without a picky critic who crushes young egos with withering stares and insults, and cheers them once they’ve finally met their true potential. I’ve got hope for Carey, who’s diva personality seems capable of delivering some well handed blows, but like all celebrities, being likeable keeps her in business.

I doubt Minaj will be the one to cut contestants down to size, and more likely will be the one to tell them to keep pursuing their dreams, even if their singing sounds like a strangled cat. Our only hope would be “Roman Zolanski” making a guest appearance.

I’m all for Minaj’s multiple personalities guesting on the panel — with the sagging ratings and tired format, the show could use all the campy gimmicks it can get.

RUSSELL BRAND .Russell Brand shot to fame in the U.S. in 2008 when he

was seen as rocker 'Aldous Snow' in the Judd Apatow-produced comedy FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL. Since then, the British star has become an international comedic success.

Recently Brand can currently be seen in FX Network’s “Brand X.” Russell’s six episode, half-hour, unscripted late night series, which he is also producing. The show is taped in front of a live studio audience and features Brand’s take on current events, pop culture and politics. The show was just picked up for a second season.

Brand recently wrapped production on Diablo Cody’s di-rectorial debut in Mandate Pictures’ untitled film, previously titled LAMB OF GOD. The film also stars Julianne Hough and Octavia Spencer and is slated for release in 2013.

Brand is currently in development to star in and pro-duce Warner Bros. THE PRESIDENT STOLE MY GIRL-FRIEND. Producing with Brand is his Branded Films partner Nik Linnen. This will be the first project by Branded Films.

Brand is in pre-production for Paramount Pictures’ THE HAUNTREPRENEUR produced by Michael Bay.

‘Red Hook Summer’ suggests Spike Lee’s star may be fading

“What happened to your Christian name?” asks a nonplussed Bishop Enoch Rouse of his smart-mouthed grandson, Flik Royale.

“I rented it out on Facebook,” the youngster retorts.

Thus are both grandfather and the audience introduced for the first time to the protagonist of Red Hook Summer, Spike Lee’s latest joint. If viewers have never seen a black, private-schooled, teenaged Vegan from Atlanta, there’s a first time for everything: Flik’s be-spoke character appears designed to disabuse all stereotypes. Visiting his uber-pious grandfather for the first time ever, Flik is a portrait of adolescent angst. He’s an outsider with a steely self-confidence, but struggles to understand the Motley Crew of denizens in his grandfa-ther’s housing project, all but ensures he rubs everybody the wrong way. As any tech-savvy and smart-mouthed kid might, he carries a tablet device (an “iPad TWO”, as Flik pointedly corrects everyone who asks) to chronicle the world around him.

Take one alienated teen, throw in a sassy potential love interest and mix in the neighborhood bully, and you have what appears to be a fairly bathetic coming-of-age yarn about love, secrets and life’s les-sons. Yet history teaches us that in Spike Lee’s world, nothing is quite what it seems on the surface, and this is especially true with Red

Hook Summer. As ever, the famously irascible eminence grise of black cinema has a parable to preach at you — although surprisingly enough, this one’s not about racism.

Wait, one might ask, what’s a Spike Lee Joint without tons of ra-cial moralizing? As it happens, not a whole lot. Red Hook Summer recalls Lee’s earlier movies, and even features a few humorous cam-eos (including the director himself, as well as refugees from She’s Gotta Have It and Do The Right Thing, but no trace of his sister Joie). Most of the actors are either beginners (including Flik and his would-

B. B. KING Throughout the 1990's as well as the 1980's, 1970's,

1960's and 1950's, there has been only one King of the Blues - Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King. Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940's, he has released over 60 albums many of them considered blues classics, like 1965's definitive live blues album "Live At The Regal", and 1976's collaboration with Bobby "Blue" Bland, "Together For The First Time".

Over the years, B.B. has had two number one R & B hits, 1951's "Three O'Clock Blues", and 1952's "You Don't Know Me", and four number two R & B hits, 1953's "Please Love

Me", and 1954's "You Upset Me Baby", 1960's "Sweet Six-teen, Part I", and 1966's "Don't Answer The Door, Part I". B.B.'s most popular crossover hit, 1970's "The Thrill Is Gone" went to #15 pop.

But B.B. King, as well as the entire blues genre, is not radio oriented. His classic songs such as "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss", "Caldonia", " How Blue Can You Get", "Everyday I Have The Blues", and "Why I Sing The Blues", are concert (and fan) staples.

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in Itta Bene, Mississippi, just outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola. He used to play on the corner of Church and Second Street for dimes and would sometimes play in as many as four towns on a Saturday




night. With his guitar and $2.50, he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1947 to pursue his musical career. Memphis was the city where every important musician of the South gravitated and which supported a large, competi-tive musical community where virtually every black musi-cal style was heard. B.B. stayed with his cousin Bukka White, one of the most renowned rural blues performers of his time, who schooled B.B. further in the art of the blues.

B.B.'s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. This led to steady performance engage-ments at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis and later to a ten minute spot on black staffed and managed ra-dio station WDIA. "King's Spot", sponsored by Pepticon, a health tonic, became so popular that it was increased in length and became the "Sepia Swing Club". Soon, B.B. needed a catchy radio name. What started out as Beale Street Blues Boy was shortened to Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King. Incidentally, King's middle initial "B" is just that, it is not an abbreviation.

In the mid-1950's while B.B. was performing at a dance in Twist, Arkansas, a few fans became unruly. Two men got into a fight and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. B.B. raced outdoors to safety with everyone else, but then realized that he left his $30 guitar inside, so he rushed back inside to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar. Each one of B.B.'s guitars since that time have been called Lucille.

Soon after his number one hit, "Three O'Clock Blues",

B.B. began touring nationally, and he has never stopped, performing an average of 125 concerts a year. In 1956 B.B. and his band played an astonishing 342 one night stands. From the chitlin circuit with its small town cafes, ghetto theaters, country dance halls, and roadside joints to jazz clubs, rock palaces, symphony concert halls, college concerts, resort hotels and prestigious concert halls nation-ally and internationally, B.B. has become the most re-nowned blues musician of the past 60 years.

B.B.'s technique is nonetheless complex, featuring deli-

cate filigrees of single string runs punctuated by loud chords, subtle vibratos, and "bent" notes. The technique of rock guitar playing is to a large degree derived from B.B.'s playing.

In the army, B.B. was introduced to the music of such

guitarists as Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker. "I heard an electric guitar that wasn't playing spiritual", recalls B.B. "It was T-Bone Walker doing "Stormy Monday", and that was the prettiest sound I think I ever heard in my life. That's what really started me to play the blues".

Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world's

most readily identified guitar styles. He borrowed from Lonnie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise vocal like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indis-pensable components of rock guitarist's vocabulary. His economy, his every note counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players including Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Jeff Beck.

be girlfriend and sidekick, Chazz) or little-known quantities.

The rough-hewn streets of South Brooklyn have none of Inside Man’s slickly-produced, noirish feel. There’s a reason for this: Lee self-financed this vehicle, and has been the main attraction at the grassroots viewing sessions in order to generate word-of-mouth. The low-budget production values – which feature shaky camera work, a slapdash cast with little chemistry or acting chops – don’t build criti-cal mass for what should be an interesting plot. The undernourished narrative doesn’t leave much for either character development or star power.

Flik’s back-story is intriguing on its face, yet the reasons behind why his mother opts to deposit him in Red Hook with a grandfather he’s never met are left unexplored. Then there’s the question of the actors themselves, who never carry the weight of their roles. In all fairness, it’s hard for any teenage actor – let alone an inexperienced one like Jules Brown – to be the emotional nerve center of a major director’s film. The void he leaves is filled by Clarke Peters, who plays his grandfather, Enoch Rouse. Mr. Peters’ performance is ar-guably the movie’s most compelling, but his presence overshadows that of his young co-stars, who really should be the film’s center-of-gravity.

Just when you think you understand where the plot is going, Lee – who should get an award for the plot twist of the year – throws the audience a curveball that sweeps the movie in an entirely different direction. The minimal advance buzz that preceded the film probably includes this ultimately polarizing plot twist. Without revealing ex-actly what that is, it’s fair to say its likely to generate sizable contro-versy. In truth, the subject matter – though resonant and topical – should have been covered in its own movie.

Fairly or not, Red Hook Summer suggests that Spike Lee’s star may be on the wane. In one public appearance tied to the movie’s re-lease, Lee was asked whether, given his track record, he found that Hollywood was resistant to making his films. He responded that he “always knew [Red Hook Summer] had to be done outside the Holly-wood system,” and that it would have been a “waste of time to get the studios to finance this film.”

It’s a truism that Spike has fashioned his career in a way that make him the Woody Allen of black cinema. Yet with Red Hook Summer the director has – perhaps unwittingly, perhaps by design – suggests he has more in common cinematically with Spanish film-maker Pedro Almodovar.

Spoiler etiquette prevents me from revealing exactly which Almodovar film “Red Hook Summer” recalls. Still, anyone who’s ever watched an Almodovar production recognizes the hallmark of ensnaring viewers with its misleadingly lighthearted narrative, snappy dialogue and funny characters. All that eventually gives way to an abrupt, bathetic sucker-punch that pushes the narrative in a de-cidedly darker, more somber direction. And like several Spike Lee movies, Almodovar’s plots contain a deep undercurrent of religious skepticism . The depiction of churchgoing folks, and the situations in which they find themselves, speak to the hostility of someone who may have lost faith himself.

Perhaps independent was the best route for Lee to travel. Yet given the evidence, it’s hard to argue that Hollywood would not have embraced a quality black movie. The indie film Jumping the Broom, with its stellar black cast, was far better produced (and more criti-cally-acclaimed), and the Tyler Perry juggernaut rolls on unimpeded, even if it has hit a few speed bumps. In light of these factors, Red Hook Summer deserved a better fate than a cast of middling actors and a shoestring budget.

Hundreds of black women attended a lively discussion on career advice led by news host

(The Root) -- More than 200 black women in New York City packed Openhouse Gallery in lower Manhattan Wednesday evening for "Young, Fabulous and Female," a panel discussion and network-ing gathering that is part of a series of events The Root has held in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. NBC News correspondent and host of MSNBC's NewsNation Tamron Hall moderated the conversation, which focused on various ways that black women can find inspiration and act confidently in their professional lives. She was joined by a diverse group of panel-ists that included sustainable-living advocate and radio-show host Majora Carter; architect and global head of design and construction at MetLife Pamela Abalu; Black Girls Rock! founder and DJ Beverly Bond; and A Belle in Brooklyn author and advice columnist De-metria L. Lucas, who is also a contributing editor for The Root. "In the five years I've been in New York, [these are the] most beautiful black women I've seen in one place," said Hall. But the event was less about cheerleading black beauty than about

providing firsthand testimonials about the often bumpy road to suc-cess. Hall described her own experiences, including times when she had difficulty dealing with antagonistic bosses, being the only Afri-can-American woman on staff and handling an under-qualified co-worker who also happened to be a black woman. She continued to lead a lively discussion on a range of topics, in-cluding whether black women support one another in the workplace, how to find a mentor and what is the definition of success. Bond talked about how she was able to turn her passion -- her love of music and hip-hop culture -- into her life's work, which is focused on promoting positive images and opportunities for young women of color. She said that she always wanted to help people and to be a sort of Robin Hood for her community. "I didn't set forth on this path," she said, "but I see now how passions led me to do that." Lucas, who explained how she started a blog in 2006 that snow-balled into her current career as an author, speaker and advice colum-nist, also talked about mining your passion. She took the advice of a friend who said, "Writers write," and decided to pursue exactly that. "What is it that you love to do?" she offered. "Figure out what it is, and figure out how to make money off of it." Bronx, N.Y., native Carter had to rethink the myth that she would have to leave her local neighborhood to carve out a career. Instead she found her niche doing green-advocacy work and improving the quality of life in her community. The most satisfying feeling, she said, is "helping people see themselves as beautiful, just by helping to change their surroundings." "Success is knowing one's own power and using it for good," she

Michael Strahan reportedly picked to co-host ‘Live! with Kelly’

It looks like former NFL star and Super Bowl winner Michael Strahan might have a new reason to celebrate. According to TMZ, Strahan has been picked to partner with Kelly Ripa on her morning syndicated talk show LIVE! with Kelly.

Several ABC staffers revealed “the talk in the building is that Strahan will be announced as the co-host,” TMZ reports.

Shrahan’s rep was reportedly seen outside of the ABC building in New York City today, “grinning from ear to ear.”

The 6’5 former New York Giants defensive end has appeared fre-quently as a guest-host for LIVE! with Kelly since June, and has been rumored as the frontrunner to become the permanent replacement for Ripa’s former co-host Regis Philbin.

Kelly Ripa will announce who gets the job for good during the Sept 4 broadcast of LIVE! with Kelly.

Humorist Phyllis Diller dies at 95 in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Phyllis Diller, the housewife turned hu-morist who aimed some of her sharpest barbs at herself, punctuating her jokes with her trademark cackle, died Monday morning in her Los Angeles home at age 95.

"She died peacefully in her sleep and with a smile on her face," her longtime manager, Milton Suchin, told The Associated Press.

Diller, who suffered a near-fatal heart attack in 1999, was found

ers are afraid of change. I have had very mixed views of change. The Quality Corner has gone through a lot of changes recently and I'd like to share them with you.

In February, I made the decision to close my eBay store. It was not an easy decision. I thought long and hard before I made the final deci-sion. You can read all about that decision here. Looking back, I know it was the right thing to do.

After closing the eBay store, I was faced with a decision about the direction of my business. In the book industry, a massive shift has been made toward ebooks. I have grown to love ebooks, so I could under-stand why they were growing in popularity. I chose to keep up with the trends. I was determined to be a forward-thinker. I did not want to get stuck with one way to do things. So, I tried to sell ebooks. I made links available on my blog to purchase ebooks from popular retailers like Barnes & Noble and iTunes. I was very excited about this opportunity.

She was a staple of nightclubs and television from the 1950s — when female comics were rare indeed — until her retirement in 2002. Diller built her stand-up act around the persona of the corner-cutting housewife ("I bury a lot of my ironing in the backyard") with bizarre looks, a wardrobe to match (by "Omar of Omaha") and a husband named "Fang."

Wrote Time magazine in 1961: "Onstage comes something that, by its own description, looks like a sackful of doorknobs. With hair dyed by Alcoa, pipe-cleaner limbs and knees just missing one another when the feet are wide apart, this is not Princess Volupine. It is Phyllis Diller, the poor man's Auntie Mame, only successful female among the New Wave comedians and one of the few women funny and tough enough to belt out a 'standup' act of one-line gags."

She inspired a generation of female comics, including Ellen De-Generes and Whoopi Goldberg, who remembered Diller on Twitter Monday.

"We lost a comedy legend today," DeGeneres wrote. "Phyllis Dil-ler was the queen of the one-liners. She was a pioneer."

"A true original has died," Goldberg wrote of Diller. "There was NO One like her, no 1 looked like her sounded like her. A FUNNY FUNNY."

Diller described herself as "one of those life-of-the-party types," in an interview with AP in 1965. "You'll find them in every bridge club, at every country club. People invited me to parties only because they knew I would supply some laughs. They still do."

She didn't get into comedy until she was nearly 40, after her first husband, Sherwood Diller, prodded her for two years to give up a successful career as an advertising and radio writer. Through it all, she was also a busy mother.

"We had five kids at the time. I don't how he thought we'd handle that," she told the AP in 2006.


A Chicago Tribune columnist, describing her appearance at a nightspot there in 1958, noted she was from San Francisco, hailed her as "the weirdest, wildest yet" — and made sure to mention her five youngsters.

Her husband managed her career until the couple's 25-year mar-riage fell apart in the 1960s. Shortly after her divorce she married en-tertainer Warde Donovan, but they separated within months.

Through both marriages and other relationships, the foibles of "Fang" remained an integral part of her act.

"Fang is permanent in the act, of course," she once said. "Don't confuse him with my real husbands. They're temporary."

She also appeared in movies, including "Boy, Did I Get a Wrong Number" and "Eight on the Lam" with Bob Hope.

In 1966-67, she was the star of an ABC sitcom about a society family trying to stave off bankruptcy, "The Pruitts of Southampton." Gypsy Rose Lee played a nosy neighbor. In 1968, she was host of a short-lived variety series, "The Beautiful Phyllis Diller Show."

Homeless man charged in LL Cool J home break-in

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A homeless man was charged Thursday with burglary for allegedly breaking into the California home of LL Cool J, where the actor-rapper subdued him.

Jonathan Kirby was charged with first-degree bur-glary with a person present and faces a maximum of 38 years to life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors are ask-ing bail be set at $1.1 million.

No arraignment date has been set and it wasn’t im-mediately known if Kirby, 56, has retained an attorney.

Kirby remains in a hospital with a broken nose, jaw and ribs after the early Wednesday altercation with the “NCIS: Los Angeles” actor, authorities said. LL Cool J held Kirby until police arrived and wasn’t injured.

Kirby has a criminal record, including convictions for voluntary manslaughter in Dallas nearly 25 years ago, along with burglary and petty theft.

LL Cool J, born James Smith, has had musical hits such as “Mama Said Knock You Out” and “I’m Bad,” and has starred in films including “Any Given Sunday.”

Museum Mission Statement The mission of the African American Museum of Nassau County [AAM] is

to provide programming and events that foster the intellectual development of community members and visitors with an interest in African-American art, history and culture. A primary goal is to disseminate the history of African-Americans on Long Island and the African-American contribution to the social and cultural development of American society through material and visual culture. The AAM, located in Hempstead, New York, opened in 1970, at the

height of the black power movement, as the Black History Exhibit Center. It is the only African American history museum on Long Island, and is located to serve Nassau County’s largest African-American population. The museum is a multi-disciplinary cultural institution that provides art installations, historical exhibitions, film pro-grams, community service events, and educational programming. This 6,000-square-foot facility, offers a rotating series of exhibits showcasing local and na-tional African American artists. The African Ameri-can Museum also houses the African Atlantic Geneal-ogy Society. This organization provides workshops and individual research instruction in family geneal-ogy. The museum has installed a new E-Learning Program that offers an innovative pedagogical ap-proach, using subject headings relative to Americans of African descent, for conducting research on the internet. The AAM is cur-rently working on methods to expand the community’s understanding of knowledge organization methods, literary warrant, and information retrieval and how these relate to African-American social history.

But standup comedy was her first love, and when she broke into the business in 1956 it was a field she had largely to herself because female comics weren't widely accepted then.

Although she could be serious during interviews, sooner or later a joke would pop out, often as not followed by that outrageous "AH-HHAAAAAAAAAAAA-HA-HA-HA!" laugh.

"It's my real laugh," she once said. "It's in the family. When I was a kid my father called me the laughing hyena."

Her looks were a frequent topic, and she did everything she could to accentuate them — negatively. She wore outrageous fright wigs and deliberately shopped for stage shoes that made her legs look as skinny as possible.

"The older I get, the funnier I get," she said in 1961. "Think what I'll save in not having my face lifted."

She felt different about plas-tic surgery later, though, and her face, and other body parts, un-derwent a remarkable transfor-mation. Efforts to be beautiful became a mainstay of her act.

Commenting in 1995 about the repainting of the Hollywood sign, she cracked, "It took 300 gallons, almost as much as I put on every morning." She said her home "used to be haunted, but the ghosts have-n't been back since the night I tried on all my wigs."

She recovered from a 1999 heart attack with the help of a pace-maker, but finally retired in 2002, saying advancing age was making it too difficult for her to spend several weeks a year on the road.

"I have energy, but I don't have lasting energy," she told The As-sociated Press in 2006. "You have to know your limitations."

After retiring from standup, Diller continued to take occasional small parts in movies and TV shows ("Family Guy") and pursued painting as a serious hobby. She published her autobiography, "Like a Lampshade in a Whorehouse," in 2005. The 2006 film "Goodnight, We Love You" documented her career.

Her other books included "Phyllis Diller's Housekeeping Hints" and "Phyllis Diller's Marriage Manual."

When she turned 90 in July 2007, she fractured a bone in her back and was forced to cancel a planned birthday appearance on "The To-night Show With Jay Leno." But it didn't stop her from wisecracking: "I still take the pill 'cause I don't want any more grandchildren."

Born Phyllis Driver in Lima, Ohio, she married Sherwood Diller right out of school (Bluffton College) and was a housewife for several years before getting outside work.

She was working as an advertising writer for a radio station when a comedy turn at San Francisco's Purple Onion nightclub launched her toward stardom.

She made her network TV debut as a contestant on Groucho Marx's game show, "You Bet Your Life." (Diller, asked if she was married: "Yes, I've worn a wedding ring for 18 years." Marx: "Really? Well, two more payments and it'll be all yours.")

She credited the self-help book, "The Magic of Believing" by Claude M. Bristol, with giving her the courage to enter the business. For decades she would recommend it to aspiring entertainers, even buying it for them sometimes.

"Don't get me wrong, though," she said in a 1982 interview that threatened to turn serious. "I'm a comic. I don't deal with problems when I'm working."
