LA names day in honor of reggae great Bob Marley

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s Bob Marley Day in Los Angeles.

The City Council on Tuesday proclaimed the day in honor of the Jamaican reggae legend, whose hits include “I Shot the Sheriff” and “No Woman, No Cry.”

Marley was 36 when he died of cancer in 1981, but his children, Ziggy and Karen, were on hand for the honor. They joined in singing a verse from Mar-ley’s “Redemption Song.”

Councilman Joe Buscaino says Marley’s music “brought people together in times of trouble.”

The proclamation coincides with the DVD re-lease of the documentary “Marley.”

Ziggy Marley also is a noted musician and has a home in Los Angeles.

Jamaican DJ Ranking Trevor dies in road crash

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Ranking Trevor, a pioneer of rap reggae during the 1970s, has died in a traffic accident in Jamaica. He was 60.

The musician’s brother, Robert Grant, says he was crushed by a car Tuesday after being knocked off his motorcycle. Police did not respond to calls about the fatality.

Born Maxwell Grant, Ranking Trevor was one of the leading “toasters” in Jamaica during the 1970s, recording mainly for the Channel One studio. Toasting is a form of Jamaican rapping that di-rectly inspired hip-hop.

Songs like “Caveman Skank” and “Three Piece Chicken and Chips” made the charts in England, where he lived more than 20 years.

His career declined in the 1980s and he returned to Jamaica a dec-ade later. He is survived by his mother, eight siblings and 15 chil-dren.

B. B. KING Throughout the 1990's as well as the 1980's, 1970's,

1960's and 1950's, there has been only one King of the Blues - Riley B. King, affectionately known as B.B. King. Since B.B. started recording in the late 1940's, he has released over 60 albums many of them considered blues classics, like 1965's definitive live blues album "Live At The Regal", and 1976's collaboration with Bobby "Blue" Bland, "Together For The First Time".

Over the years, B.B. has had two number one R & B hits, 1951's "Three O'Clock Blues", and 1952's "You Don't Know Me", and four number two R & B hits, 1953's "Please Love

Me", and 1954's "You Upset Me Baby", 1960's "Sweet Six-teen, Part I", and 1966's "Don't Answer The Door, Part I". B.B.'s most popular crossover hit, 1970's "The Thrill Is Gone" went to #15 pop.

But B.B. King, as well as the entire blues genre, is not radio oriented. His classic songs such as "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss", "Caldonia", " How Blue Can You Get", "Everyday I Have The Blues", and "Why I Sing The Blues", are concert (and fan) staples.

Riley B. King was born on September 16, 1925, on a cotton plantation in Itta Bene, Mississippi, just outside the Mississippi delta town of Indianola. He used to play on the corner of Church and Second Street for dimes and would sometimes play in as many as four towns on a Saturday

Cuba Gooding Jr sought for arrest: What happened to this Academy Award winner?

1996 was Cuba Gooding Jr.’s year. He starred in the critically-acclaimed film Jerry Maguire and won an Oscar for it. His best sup-porting actor acceptance speech was so bombastically enthusiastic it catapulted him into a new echelon of fame and fortune. Unfortunately, the good times were short lived, and since then Gooding has suffered through weak acting roles and now legal troubles. A warrant has been issued for his arrest over the alleged assault of a female bartender in New Orleans. This once very promising actor is now struggling to maintain a decent reputation in the public eye. What happened?

After Gooding’s 1996 Academy Award win, he became one of the fastest rising black actors in Hollywood. He worked the talk show cir-cuit endlessly, granting interviews, appearing in commercials, and no doubt fielding numerous meetings and lunches from the Hollywood establish-ment, which was just dying to work with him.

Undoubtedly someone caught his ear with the golden aphorism “strike while the iron is hot.” What someone didn’t tell Gooding was to strike wisely, as once the iron cools, what’s done is done. Here is where Gooding perhaps didn’t take the wisest council, and fashioned the hot iron of his career into a deformed, family film laughing-stock, a modern-day jester shucking across the big screen and ruining his reputation with audiences and the film industry. Where once he was the promising young actor, ten years of box office flops and straight-to-DVD throwaway films have made Gooding somewhat of a Holly-wood leper.

Before Maguire, Gooding largely worked in serious dramas, with supporting roles in hit films like A Few Good Men and Outbreak – not to mention his breakout role in Boyz n the Hood. These strong, career-building roles helped him land his award-winning star turn in Jerry Maguire. However after his win and comically passionate acceptance speech, Gooding’s career choices took a turn for the worse.

Perhaps he gained an appetite for silly (and unsuccessful) comedy, or he just decided to cash any check offered him, as his next roles fea-tured Gooding in painfu,l eye-roll-inducing films like Boat Trip, The Fighting Temptations, Daddy Day Camp, Snow Dogs and Norbit. All of which flopped at the box office (except for Norbit, which, to most people’s chagrin, actually performed well).

Once it dawned on Gooding that his big screen choices were flop-ping horribly, it appeared he was retiring from the theater-release busi-ness as a whole, instead opting to perform in gritty straight-to-DVD fare like Hardwired and The Devil’s Tomb.

But it’s not over for Gooding — his career seems poised for a turn-around. Last year he appeared in George Lucas’ modest hit Red Tails, his first big-screen on-camera role since 2007. Gooding is currently in New Orleans to film The Butler, a Lee Daniels film with a star-studded cast about a black White House butler that served eight presidents over the course of 30 years. It’s unclear exactly what role Gooding will be playing, but the fact that there’s no goofy premise or straight-to-DVD distribution schedule bodes well for the actor’s future.

Which makes this current accusation all the more disappointing. Gooding is accused of getting into a confrontation with a bartender af-ter other bar patrons tried to take pictures of him. An unfortunate “angry celeb forsakes the fans who made him” story, though it’s also very possible that the supposed fans were being rude and Gooding got fed up with them.

As of press time, Gooding had yet to release a statement regarding the incident, so any accusations will be only subject to speculation. Here’s hoping there’s not much truth to these charges and the situation is resolved quickly. Cuba Gooding Jr. is a talented actor on the brink of a career comeback, and another blot on his reputation could spell a re-turn to career purgatory.

night. With his guitar and $2.50, he hitchhiked north to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1947 to pursue his musical career. Memphis was the city where every important musician of the South gravitated and which supported a large, competi-tive musical community where virtually every black musi-cal style was heard. B.B. stayed with his cousin Bukka White, one of the most renowned rural blues performers of his time, who schooled B.B. further in the art of the blues.

B.B.'s first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio program on KWEM out of West Memphis. This led to steady performance engage-ments at the Sixteenth Avenue Grill in West Memphis and later to a ten minute spot on black staffed and managed ra-dio station WDIA. "King's Spot", sponsored by Pepticon, a health tonic, became so popular that it was increased in length and became the "Sepia Swing Club". Soon, B.B. needed a catchy radio name. What started out as Beale Street Blues Boy was shortened to Blues Boy King, and eventually B.B. King. Incidentally, King's middle initial "B" is just that, it is not an abbreviation.

In the mid-1950's while B.B. was performing at a dance in Twist, Arkansas, a few fans became unruly. Two men got into a fight and knocked over a kerosene stove, setting fire to the hall. B.B. raced outdoors to safety with everyone else, but then realized that he left his $30 guitar inside, so he rushed back inside to retrieve it, narrowly escaping death. When he later found out that the fight had been over a woman named Lucille, he decided to give the name to his guitar. Each one of B.B.'s guitars since that time have been called Lucille.

Soon after his number one hit, "Three O'Clock Blues",

B.B. began touring nationally, and he has never stopped, performing an average of 125 concerts a year. In 1956 B.B. and his band played an astonishing 342 one night stands. From the chitlin circuit with its small town cafes, ghetto theaters, country dance halls, and roadside joints to jazz clubs, rock palaces, symphony concert halls, college concerts, resort hotels and prestigious concert halls nation-ally and internationally, B.B. has become the most re-nowned blues musician of the past 60 years.

B.B.'s technique is nonetheless complex, featuring deli-

cate filigrees of single string runs punctuated by loud chords, subtle vibratos, and "bent" notes. The technique of rock guitar playing is to a large degree derived from B.B.'s playing.

In the army, B.B. was introduced to the music of such

guitarists as Charlie Christian and T-Bone Walker. "I heard an electric guitar that wasn't playing spiritual", recalls B.B. "It was T-Bone Walker doing "Stormy Monday", and that was the prettiest sound I think I ever heard in my life. That's what really started me to play the blues".

Over the years, B.B. has developed one of the world's

most readily identified guitar styles. He borrowed from Lonnie Johnson, Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, integrating his precise vocal like string bends and his left hand vibrato, both of which have become indis-pensable components of rock guitarist's vocabulary. His economy, his every note counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players including Eric Clapton, George Harrison and Jeff Beck.

Veteran Educator Proposes a Way for

Creating Smart Schools

New book offers a process for the creation of smart or effective schools through the development and implementation of the Educational Instructional

Coaching Model WESTBURY, N.Y. – According to John Dewey, education is not a

preparation for life, but is life itself. As a veteran educator committed to public education, Dr. Judith Kronin pens Creating Smart Schools, a book that pro-poses a model that makes it possible for every student to attain a quality edu-cation.

Ron Edmonds spoke in an uncompromising voice, “All children can learn.” Today, Kronin speaks with the same resounding spirit and says, “All educators can teach.” Creating Smart Schools is a book that offers a process for the creation of effective schools through the development and implementa-tion of the Educational Instructional Coaching Model. This model, (EICM), will enable American students to earn top scores on the Programme for Inter-national Students Assessment (PISA). EICM evolved from research and a set of core beliefs, which include the following:

The major goal of educators is to inspire students to become critical thinkers and independent learners.

Educators must create environments of small learning communities where a major portion of instruction is devoted to problem solving.

Educators must create lesson plans that inspire students to increase their enjoyment of good questions and help them work out their own under-standing of “static” knowledge like mathematics, science, and reading.

Teachers must design student-directed instructions. Educational reform is comprehensive and involves every member of

the educational community. Instructional coaching, which requires mutual respect between a coach

and teacher, is the cornerstone for improving classroom instruction. Made available through Xlibris, Creating Smart Schools is the guide-

book to what every school needs for every student to attain quality education. For more information on this book, interested parties may log on to

As Publisher of the Community Journal I highly recommend reading this book, especially if you

have children living in Nassau County...

eBay Store Closed

My eBay store, The Quality Corner 1, is now closed. After much delib-

eration, I decided to close it last month. It was not an easy decision, but it is the best course right now.

I opened the store back in 2008 and it was my pride and joy. I worked very hard to grow my eBay business. In 2009, I expanded to selling books and audiobooks world-wide. In 2010, I became a Power Seller and an eBay Top Rated Seller. I felt good about my accomplishments at that time.

In 2011, eBay made several changes to the fee structure and seller requirements. During the entire time I've sold on eBay, they have continued to make policy changes. However, the most recent changes caused me to reconsider my eBay busi-ness. I decided to keep the store open through the busiest season of the year. After a slow holiday sea-son, I became discouraged. After reviewing my prof-its, I made the final decision to close the store in Feb-ruary. As the saying goes, "if it doesn't make dollars, it doesn't make sense."

Even though my eBay store is closed, The Qual-ity Corner is still open. I maintain my relationship with a very large book distributor, therefore, I still have access to over 2 million titles in print and audio. I will continue to take special requests and ship books directly to my customers. I have several local customers, including the Columbus City School district. I am very thankful for my loyal customers and I look forward to continually providing quality products and quality service in the future.

The online segment of my business is continuing to grow. I am now selling ebooks, music and entertainment on my blog. You can view my selection here. Also, I am an affiliate for Barnes & Noble, so I will be promoting their products and passing on sav-ings to my readers. You can read more about that here. I intend to focus more on my book review service as well. To learn more about book promotion through reviews, trailers and press releases, view my website at www.blackbookreview.com.

ing week for your reporter. Most significant, was the hot and humid weather, which is a “killer” for me. I don’t deal well with weather like this since it is so very draining. My days are long, because I like to be out in the community, working and helping people. One would think that if you could relax and sit at home, one would take advantage of it. Nope, not I, I need to be on the go. There is so very much to be done. One of the most perplex-ing items to rear its ugly head was the YOUTH BOARD issue due to budget considerations. I gladly paid my “red-light tick-ets” because the fines collected were earmarked to assist our agencies that assist the youth of Nassau County. Well, simi-lar to our State Lotto, those funds will be used for other purposes because of shortfalls in the system. The worst thing we can do is to give up on our youth when they are most vul-nerable and susceptible to the evils of this world. Let your voice be heard on this topic, please. A primary goal is to disseminate the history of African-Americans on Long Island and the African-American contribution to the social and cultural development of American society through material and visual culture. The AAM, located in Hempstead, New York, opened in 1970, at the

height of the black power movement, as the Black History Exhibit Center. It is the only African American history museum on Long Island, and is located to serve Nassau County’s largest African-American population. The museum is a multi-disciplinary cultural institution that provides art installations, historical exhibitions, film pro-grams, community service events, and educational programming. This 6,000-square-foot facility, offers a rotating series of exhibits showcasing local and na-tional African American artists. The African Ameri-can Museum also houses the African Atlantic Geneal-ogy Society. This organization provides workshops and individual research instruction in family geneal-ogy. The museum has installed a new E-Learning Program that offers an innovative pedagogical ap-proach, using subject headings relative to Americans of African descent, for conducting research on the internet. The AAM is cur-rently working on methods to expand the community’s understanding of knowledge organization methods, literary warrant, and information retrieval and how these relate to African-American social history.

---HAD AN ACCIDENT in Nassau County? Get your acci-dent report online at: www.pdcn.org. No more trips to the pre-cinct in which it happened!

--- My sincerest condolences to the family and the legion of friends of my friend, the Right Reverend Monsignor Frank Midura. He brought faith, hope and love to so many believers, and to those who needed to believe. Rest in Peace. Father Midura served at St. Christopher’s Church in Baldwin, and was very in-volved in the Baldwin and South Hempstead Fire Departments where he was Chaplain and Dispatcher.

---LABOR -- Each and every one of New York's 13 metropoli-tan areas registered higher unemployment year-over-year with the state rate at 9.1% and a New York City rate at 10.3%. New York State accounted for more than one-third of all the areas na-tionwide that reported higher unemployment rates.

---Interesting Fact -- Only 20% of Catholics are registered to vote! How many do you think actually vote? TEMPUS FUGIT, my friends. Let’s get as many of our friends and neighbors regis-tered to vote. Our future depends on it.

---West Nile Mosquito Spraying has begun in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
