DEAR VILLAGE MEMBERS,As always, the beginning of the New Year brings increased usage in all of our Village clubs.

MEET your MANAGERS

We see more people in our group exercise classes, playing basketball, playing tennis and working out. It is also a time that we experience increased theft in the parking lots and locker rooms.

We have learned from both the Phoenix and Scottsdale police departments that most area clubs and gyms have been experiencing an increase in locker thefts. Even high-end clubs like the Village are not immune from these thefts.

The Village has been taking steps to minimize this situation. We have increased our staff at the front desks and will now require ALL members and guests to present their membership card or sign a guest waiver upon entering the club. Guests will now be entered into our check in system. We have also increased our staff in the men’s locker rooms during peak hours. Daily lockers have been modified to make breaking in more difficult.

Even with everything we are doing, we cannot eliminate theft at the Village, but hopefully these actions will help minimize the number of occurrences.

You, our members, can also help by being more aware and responsible for your personal belongings. Do not leave purses, gym bags and lap tops where they are visible inside your car and remember to lock your car. Please refrain from bringing jewelry, credit cards, cash and other valuables to the clubs. If you must bring valuables to the clubs, the best way to secure them is by using the small security lockers available to you at no charge. Lock your

locker at all times, even if you step away from it for a short time. Keep your locker key with you at all times. Don’t leave cell phones, wallets and car keys lying around the club, by the racquetball and squash courts and work out areas.

If you see someone suspicious or loitering around the locker rooms or parking lots, please let us know right away.

The Village staff is committed to keeping the clubs safe and enjoyable for all our members and guests but we can’t do it alone. It is important that all of our members and guests respect the club, the staff and each other. If we all work together, we can stand behind our motto that life is better at the Village.

Have a healthy and prosperous New Year.

your resortEVERY DAY

The Village Health Clubs & Spas recently participated in a number of charity events—giving members, guests and employees the opportunity to give back to the community and do good things for others. Here are the events that took place at Village Clubs around the Valley!

GIVING BACK Cycle for the Cure

“Cycle for the Cure” was a two- hour indoor spinning event that was Co-chaired successfully by two cycling sponsors—Studio 360 and The Camelback Village Health Club partnered together for the event, giving participants the choice to ride at either location. Riders donated a minimum of $200 each, and then collected pledges for their two-hour goal totaling $40,000. WOW! Congratulations!

GIVING BACK Party in Pink

Sunday, Oct. 23, Party in Pink Zumbathon was held at the Camelback Village. We had over 250 participants to raise awareness and money (over $5,000!) for breast cancer research and awareness through the Susan G. Komen Foundation. We capitalized on the Halloween spirit by wearing wigs and encouraging participants to bring in the "wild" factor. Our Theme was "Party Rock" the big hit from this year. That song started and we rushed through the crowd in costumes and everyone was screaming and laughing so that really turned up the energy for a truly memorable experience for everyone there.

GIVING BACK Think Pink “Power Cycle and Mix”

This event was held at Gainey on November 5! We had over 65 participants. Members chose an intense 60 minute cycle class with Jinger Parsons or a “Mix” barre class taught by Niece Pecenka. Everyone from both classes came together for one big group stretch, and great raffle prizes were given out! Over $3500 was raised for the Happily Ever After League which supports Arizona moms with cancer! Way to go Village members, you rock!

GIVING BACK “Dig Pink” Zumbathon, Volleyball Match and Silent Auction

The Verrado Village joined forces with the Verrado High School Volleyball Team in their first annual “Dig Pink” event. The Village held a Zumbathon and had a silent auction with all proceeds going towards Breast Cancer research and a cure. Volleyball teams around the Nation join together with the Side Out Foundation in October to help raise money for this great cause. The teams, the Village employees and our members dressed in pink to show their support at the Volleyball Match dedicated to the Dig Pink Event. Over $4000 was raised to support Breast Cancer Research. The instructors from the event.

We had a Party in Pink canvas for everyone to write the names of friends and loved oned who had either survived breast cancer or who are now a loving memory.

We are still collecting those names on the canvas in the GX hallway.

GIVING BACK

Viva Las Vegas Night

Gainey Village had another successful Casino Night! Since its inception (in 2009) Village members have raised over $16,000 to benefit LLS (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of AZ).

It is through the generosity of individuals like Village Health Club members—and through events like Casino Night—that LLS is able to help make strides in the fight against blood cancers. Thank you for your support. Each year, every dollar raised enables LLS-supported scientists and clinicians to turn promising clinical therapies into improved healthcare methods, and do so more rapidly than ever—helping patients live longer, healthier lives.

LLS gives heartfelt thanks to the Village family, with a promise that LLS will steadfastly continue to pursue a cure for blood cancers.

Brian Cheney and team defend the USA’s title at the Von Cramm Cup in Antalya, Turkey

The USA successfully defended the world championship it had won in last year’s competition held in Turkey, living up to its #1 seeding. The US was captained by the Village’s own Brian Cheney! Other players on the Von Cramm Cup Team were Larry Turville, Naples, FL, Paul Wulf, Salem, OR, and Tony Dawson, Carmel, CA. It was the first time on a world cup team for Wulf and Dawson, who accounted themselves well in the 60 & over cup. In all, 10 ITF World Championship Super-Senior Cups were contested, of which the US won an extraordinary seven! Twenty-four nations showed up for the Von Cramm Cup competition.

The US had made it to the final round via a win in its round robin group, and a semi-final win over #3 seeded France. Despite a 3 – 0 win, there were some tense moments. Cheney outlasted former #1 Frenchman Xavier LeMoine in a 3 hour, 20 minute marathon. Larry Turville, playing #1 for the US, added his own anxious moments by going down 2 – 5 in the second set before running off 5 straight games to clinch the tie. Dawson and Wulf completed the sweep with a doubles win, and the stage was set for the final against surprise finalist Australia, who had upset #2 Spain in their semi.

The final was played on a sparkling day on Center Court. Cheney opened by beating the Aussie #2, Ray Bray, 4 – 6, 6 – 2, 6 – 4, with a single service break determining the third set. Next came the battle between long-time World #1 Andrew Rae, new to the 60 & over, and last year’s World Champion in the 60’s, Larry Turville. Turville had been nursing a groin pull all week and was probably not at full strength as he succumbed to Rae’s unrelenting consistency and pressure 6 – 2, 6 – 1.

That left it all up to the rookies Dawson and Wulf, playing Rae and Max Bates, the #1 seed in the upcoming world doubles competition. After dropping the first two games, Tony and Paul found their rhythm, and never looked back, winning 6 – 4, 6 – 2. It was an extraordinary effort for two players getting their baptism of fire. The crowd was noisily appreciative of the display of crisp volleying, great returning, and flawless teamwork.

SWINGERS 2011 Halloween Open The 2011 Halloween Open has come and gone and what a great tournament it was. Lots of fantastic matches, drama, laughs and most of all fun. Plus we got to see one of the most relaxed, talented squash players that I have ever seen in Mohamed El Sherbini. All I can say to describe him would be that he is a true Harlem Globetrotter of Squash. Pretty Amazing!

SpencerTatumistheFitnessDirectoratDCRanchVillage.Spencerhasextensiveknowledgeintraining,fitness,andnutritionandshareshisknowledgeregularlyonalocalradioshow.Belowareafewfundamentalconceptsoftrainingandeatingthateveryonecanbenefitfrom:

3. Train from the ground up and from the middle out. Try to perform exercises from a standing position. As Americans, we sit or lay down for about 20 hours out of a 24 hour day. When we sit or lie down, we cause dysfunction in our muscles. Our hip flexors and gluteus tighten up. If our gluteus and hip flexors tighten up, our joints

can’t move properly. The muscles dictate how our body is going to move. If our

muscles are moving and absorbing the stress from exercise proper-

ly, the stress will not go to our joints, and we will get the

results we want from our training. Also, we need to train in multiple planes of motion because we live in multiple planes of motion. To perform movement in different

planes of motion, we must have a strong middle

pillar or core. Core training is not doing 100 sit-ups. The

core starts in the middle of our back and ends around the

middle of our thighs. The core needs to be trained in different planes of motion,

too—the different planes of motion are Sagittal (Forward and Backward), Frontal (Lateral), and Transverse (Rotational).

4. Mobility before stability! We are all born with excellent mobility. As we grow, we start los-ing our mobility due to sitting and not performing mobility work to keep it. If you want to see how to move properly, watch a 2-year-old child move. A 2-year-old can move properly in all directions, even though he may not be as strong as an adult. Most people do not perform any type of foam rolling or stretching. Foam rolling and stretching are key aspects of a great training program. One of the best investments a person a can make is a foam roller which is a 6-inch-by-3 feet piece of foam that is rolled up and down on the muscle. The roller allows myofascial releases in skeletal muscle. It is like taking the knots out of the rope—in fact, you could say a foam roller is a “poor man’s massage.” It is important to roll before we stretch. The roll-ing takes the knots out of the muscles before the muscles are lengthened. We must have mobility be-fore we strengthen. When a person lacks mobility and proceeds to perform strengthening exercises, he is putting a load on dysfunction. When a person puts an external load on a dysfunctional joint or movement, he is setting himself up for injury. Our goals in training are to reduce injury and improve performance. Performance can be weight loss or athletic performance.

5. 3 for 3 rule! The 3 for 3 rule is eating a carbohy-drate, a protein, and a fat every 3 hours. Our bodies are like high-performance automobiles. We need to put the high-octane fuel in them. If you want your body to operate at a high level and get the results that you want, you must fuel it properly. A person’s metabolism is like a fire, which needs fuel—and fuel of the right type. The body needs fuel every 3 hours or it goes into starvation mode. Starvation mode holds onto fats and slows down the metabo-lism rate. Our body is smart and is constantly adapting to its surroundings. Here are a few rules of when it comes to food choices:

A. Eat more chicken and fish and less red meat. Lean red meat is great source of protein, but most people do better with chicken and fish. Also, choose non-processed meats. Pro-cessed meats like lunch meats, hot dogs, and fast food meats are loaded with chemicals that damage our digestive systems and bodies.

B. Get your carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables. In America, we consume too much bread and simple sugars. Fruits and vegetables are a better source of carbohydrates due to the antioxidants and vitamin levels in them. I am also a fan of eating your carbohy-drates in the morning versus at night, due to the increased activity level in the morning compared to the evening.

C. Eat fat to burn fat! The right kinds of fats are much needed in our diets. Unsaturated fats are very much needed for fat loss. Examples of unsaturated fats are almonds, avocados, olive oil, etc. These fats also help in lubrication of our joints.

We are excited about helping you change your life!

1. Start with “Ready, Fire, Aim!” Just get mov-ing! Training and nutrition are always changing. The knowledge of the body is always changing. At the Village, we are always looking for ways and in-formation to improve people’s health and wellness, so it’s a good idea not to get caught up in finding the

perfect program or diet.

2. Write down your goals and tell them to someone. You will be held more accountable this way. Members always have done this task, and we then discuss successes and challenges in their program every week. Also, set daily, weekly and monthly goals that are achievable. It makes the bigger picture easier to achieve.

4 STEPSTO A BETTER YOU THIS YEAR

Make a fresh start and forget about the over indulgence or past diet failures. This is a time to start anew so forget all of the overeating you may have done over the holidays.

Dump all the holiday leftovers and the tempting diet sabotage in your cupboards. Better yet, donate all of this extra food to someone who needs it! Why keep food around that you feel guilty about eating afterwards, donate it to someone in need rather than your waist line!

Set REALISTIC goals. Often people fail because they have no goals in mind or their goals are too extreme. For example, thinking you will never eat sugar again is unrealistic and is setting you up for failure. Make small, attainable goals to help you reach a bigger goal in the future. For example, tackle one vice at a time! Maybe week one cut down to 2 frozen yogurts per week, then eventually cut down to 1 frozen yogurt per week, then maybe you will only have 1 frozen yogurt every 2 months! These small changes really add up to a big life style change.

Try something new once per week and have one staple healthy meal once per week! This keeps food new and exciting and teaching you how to look forward to a healthy meal! Eventually, you may only have one “cheat meal” per month because you found new healthy meals to look forward to. Try having a healthy food of the world night once per week and create healthy dishes either alone, with your family, or with a group of friends and make an event of it!

Chances are this year you are ready to make changes to be the best you that you can be! Why not strike while the iron is hot and your motivation is at an all time high! Get started on a plan to making your life easier, healthier, and happier!

Contact Brittney Utke, RD, at Camelback if you need help getting started on a nutrition plan. You can email her at [email protected].

Experts believe that up to 77 percent of Americans are vitamin D deficient (defined as having blood levels of less than 30 nanograms per milliliter). So why do we come up so short, especially since vitamin D is one of the few vitamins our bodies can make? Sunlight converts a cholesterol-like substance naturally found in the skin into D. The challenge is, thanks to UV rays and skin cancer, soaking up sun to make more D would do you more harm than good. For your skin to make enough vitamin D, you would need direct midday summer sunlight on a huge portion of your body for 15 minutes a day—risking serious sun damage. It’s even more difficult for people of color to make D as the melanin in dark skin decreases vitamin D production by up to 90 percent.

In the past few years, research has suggested that vitamin D might help relieve mood disorders because it seems to increase the amounts of serotonin, one of the neurotransmitters responsible for mood. In particular, vitamin D seems to help the type of depression called—seasonal affective disorder (SAD)—or the winter blues. Vitamin D also plays a positive role in heart disease, metabolism, pregnancy problems, birth defects, skin and other cancers such as colon, breast, and prostate, and multiple sclerosis. As a result, vitamin D’s daily requirements for adults have increased from 200 IUs to at least 600 IUs, and possibly more. I recommend that my clients first have their vitamin D levels checked and then for most, to take 1,000 IUs daily.

Wondering what foods and beverages are rich in vitamin D? The next time you visit the grocery store, look for fish such as salmon with bones, fat free or low-fat fortified milk, fortified soy milk and egg yolks. Because vitamin D-rich foods are so limited, it’s often beneficial to take a daily multivitamin with 600 IUs of vitamin D3. With the New Year upon us, I highly encourage you to create a New Year’s Intention to have your vitamin D level checked the next time you visit your physician. Keep me posted! Wishing you a healthy and successful 2012.

IRONMANTHIS CAMELBACK VILLAGE EMPLOYEE IS WINNING PEOPLE OVER WITH HIS WINNING WAYS.

You can’t help but like and admire 19-year-old Jean-Paul Oei (pronounced “we”), and feel like there’s hope for the next generation. JP embodies a work ethic, focus, and drive that most kids his age could learn a lot from, and he makes sacrifice after sacrifice—for school, work, and training—with a smile permanently planted on his face.

JP seems to live at the Camelback Club, fulfilling responsibilities as both Assistant Coach with Swim Neptune and Lead Fitness Attendant. When he’s not working, he’s working out, training for the next big challenge.

His most recent achievement was finishing 10th in his age group at the Ford Ironman Arizona, a gruel-ing 140.6-mile test of physical and mental endurance. He was the second-youngest person out of the field of nearly 3,000 competitors, and finished in an impres-sive 12 hours and 36 minutes. We caught up with JP shortly after the November 20th race, and talked to him about his commitment to being the best he can be.

When did you first get interested in athletics? Jean-Paul Oei: When I was 12 or 13, I started swimming with coach Joe Zemaitis of Swim Neptune. He was a profes-sional triathlete, and I thought that was pretty cool.

Did you like swimming competitively? I got into it right away. It was exciting and challenging. When I was 15, I swam in the Annual Alcatraz Classic: Swim with the Centurions and came in third place overall. It was the same year that seven-year-old Braxton Bilbrey from Glendale, Arizona became one of the youngest people ever to swim the 1.4-mile route. Braxton, Joe and his brother John, and I all went to the event together.

It seems like Joe has been a big influence on you. Oh, he sure has been, and still is. About four years ago, I decided that I wanted to do the Ironman before I was 20. Coach Joe was a big part of that, because he holds the 19-and-under world record for Ironman. Not many people do that race to begin with, and to do it before you’re 20 is really pretty rare. You have to be at least 18 to compete, so there’s a pretty tight, two-year window if you want to do it before you’re 20. Joe really inspired me to reach this goal, and he’s been an incredible mentor. He guided me throughout my training, which I started about a year ago, and he got me an incredible, high-end bike that I never could have afforded.

Did you train with a group or on your own? My school and work schedule prevented me from joining a team, but a lot of my friends do sprint triathlons so I was able to train with them sometimes. I also ran with a few cross-country girls I knew from high school.

Did you ever just want to give it up? Every once in a while I’d take a day or two off, but I had a pretty good idea of what I was taking on and what I had to do to succeed. To do anything that requires sacrifice, you can’t just kind of want it. You have to really want it. Everyone picks what they really want, and this is what I chose.

Did you just focus on the three different sports in your training? Pretty much. When I quit swimming competitively after high school, I picked up weight training and gained a lot of mass that I didn’t need for the Ironman. So I had to spend a lot of time in the beginning just trying to cut down my weight. I didn’t do a lot of swimming because I felt pretty confident in the water, so I focused mainly on running and biking. I mixed the two into what they call bricks, doing a long ride followed by a run to get used to going from a low-impact activity to a high-impact one.

Is there anything you wish you had done differently? I could have done more cycling. It’s a very technical sport and I only had 10 months to learn it. It’s some-thing I want to get better at.

How did your eating habits change? When I used to train for short swimming events, like the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, I could eat anything I wanted. But when you’re training for an event that’s over ten hours long, you need a different game plan. I was re-ally conscientious about what I put into my body, mak-ing sure that everything would digest smoothly. I also had to learn to eat while riding and running. For race day, I ate the four Snickers bars that I brought with me, plus everything the event organizers were handing out on the course.

So what was it like to finish the race? It was the most amazing thing. Nothing compares to it: It’s unexplain-able. I was so happy at the end of the race, even though I was pretty much toast physically. You know, I never understood why people would collapse when they crossed the finish line at a race like that, but now I get it. Your body is so perfectly aligned with your mental goals when you’re competing. I could have gone ten more miles to get to the finish line, but once it was over, even the littlest thing was a struggle. Just step-ping up on the curb to get to the car felt like climbing Mt. Everest.

Were there a lot of people cheering you on? Oh yeah. Joe was there. My parents and grandparents, a couple of aunts and uncles, cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Keeble from swimming. Even though I did the race, there are so many other people that I have to give credit to because they were so inspiring and supportive.

You’ll probably be in their position some day. What’s it like being an inspiration to the kids you coach? I hope so. I really like working with the kids and helping them have fun and accomplish what they’re there for. Everyone’s there for a different reason, and I want to make them the best swimmers they can possibly be. As Lead Fitness Attendant I also teach the junior certification classes, so kids can learn how to use the exercise equipment at the club. It’s really rewarding to help kids stay active and learn the importance of being healthy. There’s so much technology around us, we tend to forget about ourselves and the incredible machines that are keeping us alive…If we maintain and take care of our bodies, we can have a really good life.

Are you interested in pursuing a career in fitness? I’m going to ASU to pursue a degree in either busi-ness or kinesiology, which is the study of how the human body moves. And I hope I can keep coaching swimmers for a while. But if I can get into the fire department in the next couple of years, I think that would be the best fit for me. I really like helping people, and if I can get paid for that I’ll be really happy.

WITH A HEART OF GOLD

FEB 9 – 12 There are still spots left on the Telluride Ski Trip, but they won’t last long. You get all this for just $575/person: 3 nights hotel at The Peaks Resort, 3 day lift tickets, and luxury transportation on a Motor coach bus.

SWIMSwimming at the Village is a year round activity! The pools are heated year around and the swim team action goes strong all year long! The Village offers programs for all ages and ability levels for kids who just want to learn and new skill and stay fit to those who want to compete at the highest levels.

Fresh off overall team wins at the Andy Divine Days Invitational in Kingman and the Ingrid Kaleta Invitational in Anthem, Swim Neptune looks to defend their State Championship at the Arizona Age Group State Championship in March.

The competitive program is only half the story. The Village also offers developmen-tal swim programs with top quality coach-ing and a flexible schedule. Though we’re in the midst of our supposed “Arizona winter” the water is warm and the pool is a great place to be. Meets are offered 1 – 2 times per month. Email [email protected] for more information about swim team programs at Camelback, DC Ranch and Gainey. We also offer a “once a week” option for swim team. This al-lows kids of all ability levels to continue improving stroke technique and increas-ing strength and stamina in the water. This option is perfect for those who also participate in other sports or after school activities. Practice times vary based on age and experience.

V • Aqua Fit MON, WED, FRI It may be chilly but the pools are heated so Aqua Fit is still going on. Don’t forget Aqua Boot Camp on Fridays!

They’re not passengers, they’re your family. The M-Class helps look after them. In a fraction of a second, it can check blind spots, scan the road for trouble ahead and alert you if it detects that you’re drowsy.* In the time it takes to read this ad, it will have performed more active safety measures than some cars will in their entire lifetime.
