PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEDear Members of the Villanova College Family,

On Friday 18th November we will farewell the Senior class of 2016 in a special ceremony in Goold Hall. Families of our senior students will join with members of staff to celebrate the conclusion of secondary schooling for these young men. Graduation from the College is a significant milestone and it is wonderful to share this time with the many teachers and family members who have supported the students across the years and especially during the past twelve months. The support of our families is crucial to the success of the schooling process at our College and I thank our parents for the support they have constantly and consistently provided to our senior students.

Earlier this week we received the results of the 2016 Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS) for the Senior class of 2016.

PERCENTAGE

A 41 30.6%

B 44 32.8%

C 39 29.1%

D 10 7.5%

As you can see 92.5% of our students achieved an A, B or C result on the QCS Test. Students and staff are very pleased to see this improvement in performance on this important test which is used in the scaling process for Year 12 results and the calculation of Overall Position OP ranks. I thank the Year 12 teaching staff under the leadership of Mr Paul Mead for their work with the students across 2016. Well done Year 12 2016.

On Tuesday evening the Year 6 students and their families gathered in the Hanrahan Theatre for their “Moving On Ceremony” to mark the conclusion of their time in the Junior School. An Old Irish Blessing

May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen

You have made us for Yourself O, Lord

And our hearts are restless until they rest in You.

HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOLOn Tuesday evening we celebrated our Year 6 students at the 2016 Moving On Ceremony. Two years as Villanovans has seen so many positive changes to the boys and it’s on an evening such as this that we can appreciate how amazing the boys are. As the boys spoke about life through their eyes, overviewing each term, I felt that wave of nostalgia hit me. From camp antics and triumphs, to teacher mimics and anecdotes, the boys reminded us how lucky we are to work at Villanova, particularly in the Junior School.

Last Friday at the Year 5 Day of Reflection Mr Callum Hackett (5Blue) recalled his favourite Villanovan, Robert (Robbie) Sellars, to the Year 5 students. In his own words, Robbie was the most “out of the box” and “straight down the line” kind of kid. Being diagnosed with leukaemia, which would eventually see him pass away as a Year 6 student, Robbie was determined to live life to the full and remind all his classmates to do the same. His “big wish” (which could have been anything at all) was to have a Seniors jersey, something that is normally reserved for when the boys graduate in Year 12. That was all he wanted because Villanova was everything to him. Each year the Junior School remembers and honours Robbie Sellars by way of an award to a Year 6 student who goes above and beyond to live life at the College in full spirit and commitment. This year the following boys were nominated for the Robbie Sellars award: Liam McConville, Riley Richards, Alex Friedman, Aston Gapes, Patrick Grigson, Will Clegg, Joshua McIlwain, Thomas Boxall, Max Gosling and Jared Farrugia. Mr Matt Sellars, Robbie’s father, was on hand at the Moving On Ceremony to present the award to Patrick Grigson. We congratulate Patrick for all he has done in the Junior School over the last two years.

At the ceremony on Tuesday we also celebrated the Junior School Sportsman of the Year Award for outstanding achievements. This award is given to a student who has represented the school in a variety of sports, has achieved success in those sports and above all has displayed a sportsman-like attitude to his coaches, managers, opponents and his teammates throughout his two years in Junior School. This years’ recipient has distinguished himself in each of these areas and stood out in a year level that has many fine and talented young sportsmen.

JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTSMAN of the YEAR 2016 - Ruben Webb

Throughout his two years at Villanova, Ruben has been a very active, very competitive but humble achiever. He has represented Villanova in five of the eight AIC/CIC sports on offer and has competed in numerous representative sporting teams.

His achievements over the last two years include representing Villanova in the

• 5A and 6A cricket teams

• 5B and 6A rugby teams

• 5C and 6C basketball teams

• Year 5 and Year 6 Cross Country teams

• and he competed in numerous events in the Year 5 and Year 6 Track and Field teams.

In 2015 and 2016 Ruben was selected to represent Villanova in the Lytton District AFL team and this year he was also selected in the Lytton District team for the multi-event at the Track and Field carnival.

Ruben’s support for his coaches and his commitment and dedication to

training has always been exemplary. He has given his sports the very best he had to offer and his encouragement of others to do the same is a great reflection on him, his family, coaches and his friends who have encouraged and supported him over the last two years. It is little wonder he was chosen to be the Junior School Captain for both the Cross Country and Track and Field Championships this year.

It is every student, who was called up onto the stage that we also take a moment to reflect upon. They have had many moments of success and challenges, building resilience and making their own path through life. They are to be proud of all they have achieved and hopefully, will remember us fondly here as they move into the Middle School. I am confident they are ready – not just academically – but physically and mentally to meet the expectations of Year 7. Having just seen first-hand how much my own son Harrison has grown in Year 7 makes me truly appreciate just how important our Year 5 and 6 preparation and pedagogy is for our young men.

The prayer we led with on the night is what I would to share with you all – it is the perfect way to remind us of the journey we are on.

Lord with each new day that dawns, boys, you are growing up

It’s not too soon to start thinking of what you want to be

It’s not too soon to find a way, that brings out the best in yourself

It’s very hard to make the right decisions

And we pray for God’s help, to guide the teachers, and the parents to show you the way

Make your steps forwards, not backwards or sideways, for God is beside you

He is all the strength you need

Share your talents and knowledge – be courageous to shine

We will always be your audience and grateful for you letting us in

For with God we will hold you up as high as you want to reach

Have courage to be generous with your time, your patience and love

For those things are all that anyone ever needs from you

Thank your friends who embrace your strengths and weaknesses

And be sure to honour them truly

For it is with them that you find humour and joy as the learning goes on

Grant us all the grace to put our minds to use

Exploring the world God has given us

Protecting the people who come to us

Confident that only through you, our Lord, that we are the best we can be.

Mr Stephen Rouhliadeff, Head of Junior School

MINISTRYRemembrance Day

Last Friday, the community gathered to remember the many people who have given so much to serve their country through their involvement in the armed services. In particular, it was a humbling experience for us to welcome to the College the family members of Terry Hendle, the only Villanova Old Boy to have lost his life while serving his country. His army mate Mike Tucker explained the story of Terry’s tour of duty in Vietnam in 1966, culminating in Terry losing his life during a large operation out of the Australian base at Nui Dat. Equally moving was the brief address by Terry’s sister to the students congratulating them on their courtesy and the way in which they participated so wholeheartedly in actively remembering and honouring a beloved brother.

What emerged is that many who enter the armed services begin with motives and behaviours that are quite like those of a Villa boy – namely a desire to be with mates tinged with a bit of larrikinism. But the story we heard was all about how there is often a rapid maturing that occurs when young men are placed under pressure; little acts of friendship can become great actions of love and loyalty.

One of the biggest ways in which our students accelerate in maturity in becoming Villa men is when they undertake the Kokoda Challenge. It was therefore fitting that the four teams of staff, young Old Boys and students who undertook this considerable challenge in 2016 were acknowledged during the assembly. Also noteworthy was the fine support offered by our own contingent of cadets, led by Year 11 student, Casey Kreutzer.

It was staff member Adrian Hellwig who took the lead in preparing the event and the memorial for Terry. The service concluded with the placing of a plaque, donated by the Villanova Old Boys Association, into the Chapel wall. This plaque commemorates all community members who serve or who have served their country.

Advent Liturgy and Final prize-giving assembly

All family members are warmly welcome to join us in Goold Hall at 9 am on Friday 25 November for our Advent Liturgy, followed by the prize-giving and assembly. The Liturgy will be a joyful moment to look back and consider what has been achieved and given in 2016, whilst also anticipating the wonderful gift of Christmas time, when a tiny, vulnerable baby

signals everything that we need to know about a God who speaks to us in our hearts in ways that we could not dream up.

Work and Welcome worker: Salah Eldeen

Once again this year, the staff have donated a little from their fortnightly pay to be able to employ a young man of refugee background this term. Salah is originally from Sudan, and his family and village were tragically torn apart by civil war three years ago. Salah is an excellent worker who receives the highest commendations from all those he works with around all areas of the College. His great wish for 2017 is to stay in Brisbane, working in an area like construction or grounds and maintenance. It may be that your organisation is looking for workers or that you can offer some advice on where he can apply to; please contact me here at the College via email [email protected]. We are very committed to ensuring that we can really assist a young man who has no family to support him.

Ministry News

The Ministry Year for 2016 concluded last Friday with a special high tea in a pop-up café poolside (or rather skulking in air con near the pool). Year 11 and 12 Ministry Students from Loreto College joined us to create a memorable celebration of the year in community service and ministry. Some sidelights included the first Villa-Loreto bake-off won by Anna King with her melt-in-the-mouth Malteser slice impressing the sweet-toothed judges. Our three guest speakers Anthony Forshaw (SVP), Blake Johnson (Rosies) and Anna Tate (MDA) gave the 35 students present some practical advice about where and why to stay involved in outreach next year. Our special thanks to staff member Mrs Underhill for baking a fluffy M and M cake as the Ministry Cake for 2016.

Our Middle School Ministry students (YAYM) enjoyed their break-up at Belesis after a final visit to the elderly residents at the Archbishop Duhig Nursing Home yesterday (Wednesday).

QUESTION OF THE WEEK Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King. 20th Nov

Did you know?

Crucifixes often have the letters INRI inscribed on them. These are the Latin initials for Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudeorum which means Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews. These are the words that Pilate had written on the cross above Jesus.

Question of the Week. Luke 23:35 - 43

The criminal hanging on a cross beside Jesus said to him, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

Could you say these words of the criminal as a prayer each night this week?

Ministry High Tea: Ministy Students from Loreto College joined us to celebrate the year in community service.

MUSICPreparations for 2017

All information regarding involvement in the Music Performance Program in 2017 was posted out to all Year 5, Year 6 and continuing students. We would appreciate it if the nomination and enrolment forms could all be returned as soon as possible. We require this information to ensure our planning for staffing and timetabling is accurate before the end of the 2016 school year. I thank you for assisting us with this urgent matter.

Ensemble lists have been posted outside the Music Office for Middle and Senior School groups. Other groups will be finalised and published as soon as possible.

Junior Music Forms

Included with the information packs mailed out last week were the Year 5 and 6 nomination forms. These documents do not relate to our performance program for individual lessons but are relevant to the instrumental music program run through our Junior School Music Program. To assist us with planning for 2017 these documents need to be returned urgently to your son’s teacher.

Tour Information

Now that most ensembles have been finalised, information regarding tours for 2017 will be finalised and emailed to all families. Please keep an eye on your inboxes.

Instrument Returns

As we come to the conclusion of 2016, preparations are well underway for 2017. All school owned instruments need to be returned to the College as soon as possible for students in Years 7-12. This includes larger instruments (Double Basses, Tubas, etc.) that usually live at home during the year.

Students will be able to loan their instrument over Summer through the return of an updated loan agreement to be distributed through the Music Office.

As the Christmas holiday period is just around the corner, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that the sports program here at Villa would be in ‘wind down’ mode. Not So! Listed below are some of the sporting activities we have planned over the summer vacation period.

Villanova’s success in sport this year has been very pleasing. Success in sport comes through hard work and dedication from many people. The hard work and dedication needed to do well is often unseen and is generated by the efforts of many people spanning the entire season and also includes involvement in the lengthy pre-season programs. Currently we have many students involved in cricket, volleyball, swimming, football and rugby pre-season programs. I acknowledge the effort the students and their coaches give with these programs and I congratulate them all for their ongoing commitment and dedication. Well done boys!

Unfortunately, hard work and dedication will not always guarantee premierships or first places. This is a fact of life that we just have to accept. However, in my mind there is no doubt that hard work and dedication is instrumental in building a positive school culture and builds character among our students. Sport at Villa is about getting involved, giving your best, pride in the jersey, enhancing school spirit and enjoying the challenges you face with your team mates.

I suppose the bigger picture here is not about winning or premierships, although we work for them. It is about giving it your best shot and accepting that things don’t always come easy and at times you have to grit your teeth and get ‘stuck in’ in order reap the rewards. There are a lot of life lessons to be learnt whilst participating in sport.

I thank the entire Villa community for the efforts given this year. Listed below are the many opportunities available for our students over the upcoming vacation period. Our success next year will be traced back to the hard work and commitment given by those involved in the activities such as those listed below. Keep up the good work boys!

AIC Cricket and Volleyball Teams

Draft cricket teams are now published on the College website. Volleyball teams will be published next week following the trials v St Laurence’s to be held this Saturday, 19 November. Volleyball teams will be graded A - C (D teams in Year 8 and 9) based on ability. Cricket teams will be graded A - C based on ability. All teams lower than a ‘C’ team will be referred to as a ‘coloured team’. These coloured teams are of equal ability, therefore a ‘gold’ team is no better than a ‘green’ or ‘blue’ team despite how the team lists are presented.

It is normal that some boys may feel disappointed with the selections. I ask all members of the community to be resilient and accepting of the coaches’ call. There has been much time, effort and communication amongst the coaches in the selection process. Inevitably there will be differences of opinion within the community. This happens in all teams at all levels right up to the national teams.

Cricket Coaches Needed!

Thanks to all those who have generously offered to assist the College in coaching a cricket team in 2017. It is very much appreciated.

We hope to finalise all coaching appointments by the end of year. Altogether Villa will field 37 cricket teams in 2017. At this stage we are still in need of coaches to take on the following teams. If you are able to assist, please contact the Sports Office as soon as possible via Email: [email protected]

Cricket Coaches needed:

Open – 4th XI coach needed, two training sessions per week

Year 9 – One coach needed for a colour team, one training session per week

AFAS ELDERS EXCHANGE

The hot house project is organised in conjunction with the Filipino Augustinians, Fair Trade Philippines and AFAS Elders and will benefit ALL families on the island. Many thanks to those who have generously donated to make a small difference in the lives of so many. Your generosity is greatly appreciated by those on Kinatarcan.

With just over two weeks until the AFAS Elders Exchange to the Philippines, we are pleased to announce we are just under $1000 away from our target of $7500. The money raised will be used to pay for equipment and materials needed to build a drying house for the moringa plant on the island of Kinatarkan, located at the northernmost tip of Cebu. The island was in the direct path of Typhoon Haiyan which swept across the country in late 2013. For more information, follow the link to the AFAS Elders page: http://icentre.vnc.qld.edu.au/ld.php?content_id=25126959 or if you would like to contribute to this very worthy cause, please find bank details below:
