In the Gulf of Gaeta, situated in the olivegrove famed among connoisseurs, is thelittle town of Itri. 10,650 people livecomfortably alongside one another. Below,in the bay of the Tyrrhenian Sea, is Gaeta.It was here that the American painter CyTwombly had his last studio.
It’s only a short hop to the Pontine Islandswhich are situated just offshore. Here, in the Italian region of Lazio, thewinter is very mild and the summer iswarm: the typical Mediterranean climate. Ifyou wish to swap the sun lounger at yourpoolside with a sun lounger on the beach,the journey is only 15 minutes to the coast.An example: “Serapo Beach”. It belongs toGaeta, a port and seaside resort with along history, green pines and palm trees.The long sandy beaches are a great placeto swim from April till October. First-classrestaurants are waiting for you, along withthe petite restaurant Bella Vista where,according to many, Gian-Luca makes thebest, or at least the second-best pizza inthe world in his oven.
The nearest airport is located in Naples,just 90 kilometres away and easily reachedin 80 minutes thanks to a well-developedroad network. Fancy a little history?Settlements have existed in Itri since as farback as ancient times. However, it was onlymentioned in writing for the first time in914. Itri was part of the territory of theduchy of Gaeta, belonging to the Caetanidell’Aquila family, dukes of Fondi. In 1861,Itri became part of the Terra del LavoroProvince of the Italian Empire, laterbecoming part of the newly founded LatinaProvince in 1934.
