Exline Inc., Salina, Kansas, has recently installed a new Citizen A32 CNC Swiss turning center in its Industrial Manufacturing & Repair division.

The 138-year-old, family-owned company has provided support to industrial, government and military facilities, performing on-site repairs around the world. These efforts have been related to the gathering, refining, compres-sion, transmission, and distribution of petroleum products and natural gas, as well as the generation of electricity.

Today, with the 5th generation of the Exline family at the helm, Exline Inc. operates divisions that specialize in: repair & manufactur-ing; field services, thermal spray and plastics.

The repair and manufacturing services division is described as the “Ultimate Job Shop.”

Services offered at the division include: machining (CNC & man-ual) of all sizes; surface cleaning/preparation; grinding & finishing; balancing of rotating components; equipment redesign & modifica-tion; reverse engineering; produc-tion salvage and straightening.

The new Citizen Swiss turning center (purchased from McClain Tool & Technology) replaces an older piece of equipment. It fea-tures dual spindles; 7-axis, 21 tools (4 live), a 12’ barfeeder, lights out capabilities and a 1¼” diameter capacity.

“We are impressed with the Citizen’s capabilities and the ser-vice provided by McClain,” stated Exline’s Bob McIntosh.

The division works with all kinds of metals and plastics in siz-es that range from extremely small to those that have to be strapped

on a truck bed. The firm is used to working with tight tolerances.

Industries served include: utilities; agriculture; energy; petro-leum; government; food; medical; construction; marine; hydraulics and many more.

Garner Industries, Lincoln, Nebraska, has installed a new turning center with advanced CNC machin-ing capabilities and has received ISO 9001:2008 certification. The Mazak Quick Turn Nexus-II 250-II MSY al-lows the job shop to machine complex parts for customers whose require-ments are up to 3” diameter. The Y-axis and live tooling capabilities make multi-axis machining possible on one machine.

The turning center features a 10” diameter chuck with a maximum machining diameter of 14.750”, 4000 RPM main spindle, 6” diameter chuck as well as a 6000-RPM sub-spindle, 4500 RPM live tools, and 3” thru spindle capacity with a 6’ bar feeder. It can be used for machining a wide vari-ety of materials including carbon steel, aluminum, stainless steel, as well as alloys such as inconel, and plastics.

The 24-year old family firm offers a wide variety of pumps and pump parts from over 25 different manufacturers and has a substan-tial machining operation that pro-duces pump parts (OEM, replace-ment, discontinued) and produces a wide range of custom machined parts and assemblies.

Recent changes at Danco Pump & Supply Co. include: a distributor agreement with Trade Equip Service & Marine for South America, Mexico and Malaysia; being named an authorized dis-tributor for FMC Pumps (including

The crew in Danco Pump’s machining area are experts in producing replacement parts in a hurry. “Often when we get a call from a customer they have a break

The machining area does such good work that the firm produces OEM parts for a multitude of different brands of pumps including; Gaso, Wheat-ley, Gardner-Denver®, National, Oilwell, Tulsa, Bethlehem, Kerr, to name a few.

St. Louis NTMA Tours Mueller Machine & Tool and Awards Scholarships

The Greater St. Louis Chapter of the National Tooling and Machin-ing Association (NTMA) held a shop meeting at Mueller Machine & Tool Co. in St. Louis on September 21st. Over 100 attended the event.

The firm operates in a 60,000-

sq.-ft. facility and designs and builds die cast dies, stamping dies, draw dies, trim dies, special machinery, fixtures, gauges and plastic molds.

It won’t come as any shock to you, but the yearly cost of federal regulations rose to more than $1.75 trillion in 2008...about 14% of U.S. national income. If you add the federal tax burden of 21%, this amounts to 35% of national income.

So, one out of every three dol-lars earned is required to pay for or comply with federal laws and regulations. The new policies en-acted for health care and financial services will increase this burden.

Nicole and Mark Crain, economic professors at Lafayette College, are authors of “The Im-pact of Regulatory Costs on Small Firms,” published by the U.S. Small Business Administration

Their studies show that “...small businesses bear a dispropor-tionately large share of regulatory costs. The portion of these costs

that fall initially on businesses overall was $8,086 per employee in 2008. But these costs are not borne equally by businesses of all sizes.”

The Crain report notes that, “small businesses–those with fewer than 20 employees–incur regulatory costs 42% greater than firms with between 20 and 499 em-ployees and 36% greater than firms with more than 500 employees. The regulatory costs per employee for small businesses was $10,585, compared to $7,454 for medium firms and $7,755 for large firms.”

This disadvantage varies across the economy and in the case of manufacturing the cost difference is particularly large. The disadvantage for small busi-ness is driven by environmental regulations, tax compliance, and occupational safety and homeland

security rules. “In per-household terms, the com-

bined federal burden of regulation and taxes is a remarkable $37,962. Increased transparency in both the cost and ben-efit side of the regulation equation is necessary to determine whether what we spend is worth the 35% of national income that it costs. This is particularly true now that the government is making a great effort to stimulate the economy while increasing regulations costly to businesses,” the Crains concluded.

In an article, “The Rising Tide of Red Tape,” the Heritage Foundation points out that the Code of Federal Regulations hit a record high of 163,333 pages in 2009, an increase of some 22,000 pages since 2000.

The fiscal 2011 budget calls for di-rect expenditures by regulatory agencies of over $59 billion, an increase of 4.1% over fiscal 2010, and 8.9% over 2009. So far this year the Administration has adopted some 25 major new regulations. That’s higher than the full year total for all but one year since 1997.

Since it appears to us that congress-men seldom read the bills they pass, let alone the ensuing regulations, it’s vital that they start establishing more “sunset” clauses to remove outdated regulations and reduce the amount of paperwork.

However, it’s not all bad news on the regulation front. It appears that more and more businesspeople are under-standing they can’t just leave everything up to Joe Congressman. They’re taking action against bad legislation and overly expensive regulations. They’re not only contacting their representatives, but are joining their trade associations and societies that now have highly qualified CEOs that are in touch with the legisla-tive process daily and are indeed mak-ing a difference.

Even President Thomas Jefferson recommended... “a wise and frugal gov-ernment, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improve-ment, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned.”

The Kansas City Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining Asso-ciation (NTMA) held a shop meeting on September 23rd at Continental Tool & Manufacturing.

Nashashibi dis-cussed many of the pressing issues facing

manufacturing and the NTMA in the upcoming year. He emphasized that most decisions in Washington ultimately come down to the number of voters that are impacted by legisla-tion or policies. NTMA members represent a good-sized voting block when all employees and families are taken into account.
