Calendar of IntercessionsChristmas-Passiontide 2018
to this edition of the
prayer diary, which takes us from New Year’s Eve to Passiontide.WelcomeAs usual, it’s a sizable document but designed to be quick and clear to read, and also to leave space for your own notes. Of course, you do not have to print it all out at once, and you’re welcome to reformat it, if you wish (a Word version is available from my blog, see website below).Sunday entries are designed to look at some of the bigger pictures in our Diocese – sometimes geographical (deaneries, archdeaconries, link dioceses) sometimes issues or activities (Vocations Sunday). If there is an aspect of diocesan life that you’d like included on a Sunday, do let me know. These are followed through the week by daily prayers from all over the diocese, and across the Anglican Communion, including the calendar of saints and other worthy people. Finally, there is space in the daily entries for you to note any prayer requests that have been made to you or your parish, or any special interests you want to remember in your prayers. Please contact me with any comments or suggestions – [email protected] or 01634 814439. I will also be pleased to provide large print copies to any who would find that helpful. The calendar is published on the Diocesan website, and also on www.rochesterworship.wordpress.com where you can find the next quarter’s intercessions (hopefully) as this quarter starts to come to an end.

Gravesend deanery
Gravesend Deanery is seeing considerable growth at this time, as new housing is being built especially in the parishes of Swanscombe, Greenhithe and Northfleet and Rosherville, as part of the Ebbsfleet Garden City Development. Please pray for the establishment of church presence in these communities, and for continuing plans for the future of the church in this new town. Pray too for the establishment of new schools as part of this new development, and of the new church school on the site of St George’s C of E School. The churches of Gravesend Deanery seek to serve the communities, many of which face some deprivation and hardship, through various shared projects – a night shelter, foodbank, debt advice, drop-in cafes, lunch clubs and so on – please pray for all involved, and for those most in need of help and support. Please also pray for the new Area Dean of Gravesend Deanery, to be appointed by February.

Christian Unity Week of Prayer (18-25 January)
“The material for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2018 has been produced in the Caribbean which is deeply marked by the history of the colonialism. The chosen passage from Exodus 15 allows us to see that the road to unity must often pass through a communal experience of suffering. Christians participate in God’s ministry of reconciliation, yet our divisions hamper our witness to a world in need of God’s healing. Reconciliation demands repentance, reparation and the healing of memories. The whole Church is called to be both a sign and an active agent of this reconciliation.Barrier-breaking God, You embrace all cultures and lands, But keep a special place in your heart For the stranger, the widow and the orphan. Grant us the gift of your Spirit That we may become as You are, Welcoming all as brothers and sisters, Your cherished children, Citizens together in Christ’s kingdom of justice and peace. Amen”

Orpington deanery
This is a time of change for Orpington Deanery with four parishes currently in interregnum. We are pleased to welcome Reverend Rob Parker-McGee who will be taking up the post at All Saints, Orpington at the end of February. Please pray that other vacancies at Keston, the Cray Valley Benefice and St Francis, Petts Wood might also soon be filled. We give thanks for the hard work and support of all those who have provided cover during the busy Christmas period and interregna, and those responsible for the appointment of new ministers to vacant parishes. We pray also for two curates who have served their title and contributed much to the life and work of the Deanery. Jane Winter will be taking up a Diocesan post in the New Year, we wish her well. We pray too for God’s blessing on Cathy Knight-Scott as she looks for a new post.We congratulate Jay Colwill on his appointment as Canon Missioner in the Diocese of Southwark, giving thanks for Jay’s service in Orpington as Vicar of Christ Church and as Area Dean. Please pray for Jay and his family as they move on, and for the people of Christ Church as they seek a new minister.A good number of folk from the Deanery were present at the launch of ‘Called Together’ and we are excited by the prospect of working out how we can work together to implement a strategy to ‘grow disciples, enrich our communities and resource mission and ministry’ across the Deanery.

Paddock Wood deanery
The Deanery is for the first time in nearly two years fully staffed with no vacancies. We give thanks to God for those he has sent to serve him in the parishes and deanery and wait to see what gifts are used to build his kingdom.
We continue to give thanks for the open doors we have to work in the schools, both church affiliated and community and pray for the new free school to be built in Paddock Wood as planning will start in 2018. We pray for new initiatives being used in our rural communities to engage with the ever changing population; The Well @ 5pm, How let the Dads out, Messy church, Café church shared between parishes. We pray for the opportunities new housing will have in some of our parishes within the deanery, whilst not always warmly welcomed by the communities we serve.

We give thanks for a good time away together as a deanery in October 2017 as we undertook Leading Your Church Into Growth, and pray that we will follow up by continuing to work creatively together and sharing resources.
Please pray for our forthcoming Deanery Synod with a focus on work with children and young people, that we might encourage and learn from one another. Pray for churches across the deanery as we prepare by using Lent courses encouraging personal evangelism and that this training will be inspiring and enable us to be effective in our daily witness.
Please continue to pray for the evolution of the Chatham Town Centre Project as new colleagues arrive, as building work continues on St John’s church, and as new patterns of mission and ministry emerge.

Mothering Sunday
Lent 4Numbers 21.4-9Psalm 107.1-3, 17-22 [or 107.1-9]Ephesians 2.1-10John 3.14-21
Mothering Sunday
Mothering Sunday is a joyful day for many, the day to delight in mothers and maternal figures; but it can also be a day difficult to handle by some: by people who have a complex relationship with their mother; by women who long to be mothers; or who have lost their children either through death, adoption, or a breakdown in the relationship. All these groups need special prayer today.Mothering Sunday is also a day we can reflect on the feminine in God. (There are several points in the scriptures, and in the writings of the Church, in which God is described with feminine imagery.) Weary from the demands of this world, we can rest in the lap of our Heavenly Mother, and in the strength of her care, we can care for others.Mother Church is another focus of thanksgiving for this day, both in terms of structure (cathedral churches, minster churches and churches that have sent out church plants) and in the imagery of the wider church who nurtures us, and feeds our faith.

Prayer Requests:
“Consider how you yourselves can be among those of whom the Lord said: ‘Here are my mother and my brothers.’ Do you wonder how you can be the mother of Christ? … You became children when you were born [in the font] yourselves, and now by bringing others to birth in the same way, you have it in your power to become the mothers of Christ.” Augustine of Hippo 354-430
