The Stratum Corneum (SC) is a selectively permeable and heterogeneous composite outer layer of the epidermis that protects the skin against desiccation and environmental challenges, retaining sufficient water to keep the skin functioning in arid environments. The state of the SC depends on the maintenance of its water content at an optimal level, a function predominantly handled by the Natural Moisturizing Factor (NMF).

Found exclusively in the SC, the NMF is a complex mixture of low-molecular-weight water- soluble compounds present in high concentrations inside corneocytes (as much as 10% of their dry weight), representing up to 20-30% of the overall dry weight of the SC.

Contained in the NMF, three neutral amino acids need special mention: serine, proline and alanine. Serine is the most abundant (40%). Hydroxyproline is a typical amino acid of collagen and it constitutes 25% of its composition, together with its precursor (proline) [6]. Alanine is the third amino acid in quantity. Due to their relevance, such amino acids seem to be an excellent option to restore the NMF in dry skin. Some studies emphasized that the neutral and basic free amino acids in particular are the key elements for the plasticity of the Stratum Corneum.

Calendula Officinalis Flower Extract: The petals and pollen of Calendula officinalis contain triterpenoid esters and the carotenoids flavoxanthin and auroxanthin (antioxidants and the source of the yellow-orange coloration). The leaves and stems contain other carotenoids, mostly lutein (80%), zeaxanthin (5%), and beta-carotene. Plant extracts are also widely used by cosmetics, presumably due to presence of compounds such as saponins, resins, and essential oils.

The flowers of Calendula officinalis contain flavonol glycosides ( contribute to UV protection), saponins ( contributes to possible enhanced protein and nutrient uptake through cell wall penetration) , and a sesquiterpene glucoside.
