Phil course was introduced in the year 2009-10. The college was recently upgraded to a cluster university on 30 th May, 2015. The department offers courses in B.Sc Hons. and Generic Elective comprising 6 semesters/3years, M.Sc. comprising 4 semesters/2 years and M. Phil 2 semesters/1year. Selection of students to choose a career in B.Sc is executed through e-admission process while M.Sc. on the basis of marks secured in B.Sc and for M.Phil through an entrance exam and viva-voice test. Since the establishment till today great numbers of students have shown their efficiency in different Govt. and private sectors. 1. Dr. Manorama Samanta, Reader and Head

Dr. Manorama Samanta, OES is the current H.O.D and has been teaching Zoology since 28 years at UG, PG and M.Phil level. She has many research publications in international & national journals. She has presented high quality papers in national/international conferences/Seminars/ Workshops / Symposiums. She has produced many M. Phil scholars. She is an active member of Board of studies, conducting boards of various colleges and University.

2. Dr. Bibhuti Prasad Barik, Lecturer

Dr. Bibhuti P. Barik has been working as Lecturer in Zoology in the P.G. Department of Zoology, since 11 June 2014. He has about 10 years of teaching experience at the Post Graduation level in North Orissa University. His field of research interest includes Genetics, computational biology and phylogenetics. He has published 11 research papers in international, 04 research papers in national level journals and popular articles in University magazines. He has authored one book titled "Bioinformatics of Fusarium Life Styles". He has also edited an book titled "Advances in Life Sciences" published by Studium Press, USA and contributed 07 book chapters in different books edited by different editors. He has participated around 22 conferences/seminars, 21 workshops, one symposium and one summer training program having 16 full length papers, 10 abstracts in booklets/conference proceedings. He delivered many invited talks in Universities, CSIR-research institutes, Colleges and All India Radio. He has served as Co-coordinator, Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility, NOU, Baripada a major project sponsored by DBT-Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. 3. Dr. Cuckoo Mahapatra, Lecturer

Dr. Cuckoo Mahapatra is a Gold Medallist and stood 1st class 1st during post-graduation in Zoology. She qualified Joint CSIR-UGC NET in Life Sciences in 2006 and awarded the Fulbright-Nehru Professional and Doctoral Fellowship in 2010-2011 for carrying out research in United States of America. She worked in the Bryant-Gardiner lab. in the University of California Irvine, Irvine, California, USA for 9 months towards her Fulbright fellowship. She has one book and several national and international publications in indexed journals and journals with impact factor. Besides, she has also attended various seminars and conferences held in India and USA. She is also a member of Board of studies of the Department.

5. Ms. Chirasmita Mishra, Guest Lecturer

Ms.Chirasmita Mishra is working as a guest lecturer in P.G. Department of Zoology, Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur since 1st August 2014. She has 3 session teaching experiences at graduation and post graduation level in S.B.R.G. Women’s college and Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur. She has stood 1st class 1st in M.Sc. and nominated to senate of Berhampur University. Her field of specialisation is Cell physiology and Biochemistry in her M.Sc. level and she has also completed her one year research work in the field of Entomology and Radiation Biology in her M. Phil level. She has received D.N. Adhikary award, “Child Scientist” award and “Rajat Jayanti Vigyan Sancharak Fellowship-2012” by Department of Science & Technology (DST), New Delhi. She has participated in 1 international, 5 national seminars, 3 workshops and published 1 full paper in national journal. She has also 1 paper in edited book and 7 abstracts in different seminars/ conferences proceedings. She has also delivered an oral presentation in a National Seminar by Regional Science Congress, BBSR. She also presented a poster in the Indian Science Congress, Mysore.

5. Mrs. Rajabala Tripathy, Guest LecturerMrs. Rajabala Tripathy is working as a guest lecturer in P.G. Department of Zoology,

Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur since August 2015. She has 3 session teaching experience at graduation and post graduation level in Royal College of Science and Technology, Bhubaneswar from May 2013 to May 2014; in Rajdhani college, Bhubaneswar for the session 2014-2015 and and Khallikote Autonomous College, Berhampur in the session 2015-16. She has done M. Phil in Zoology from Utkal University, Pre-PhD course in zoology from Utkal University and she has qualified CSIR-NET (LS) in Life Sciences.

Department Activities:

Every year the department is conducting Fresher’s Day for the UG, PG and M.Phil first year incumbents, Saraswati puja and Ganesh puja, Teacher’s Day and the seminars for the UG and PG students. At the end of the academic session the Annual Day celebration is followed by the Farewell of the final year UG, PG and M.Phil students.

1. Student Achievements:

Miss Madhusmita Behera, qualified for Odisha Civil Services in 2016. Five U. G. students of +3 Final year attended the workshop held at ITER, SOA University,

Bhubaneswar in February 2016. D Lohita Raulo +3 Final year attended NCC camp at Kerela in 2016 and awarded Best

cadet. Ashish Kumar Das, +3 Final year have taken part in population census of migratory birds

in Berhampur forest division in January- February, 2016. He also presented a paper on “Documentation and conservation of waterfowls in Berhampur forest division” at National Seminar on Biodiversity assessment and wildlife management held in School of Wildlife and Remote Sensing , North Orissa University, Baripada.

M. Phil student Biswajyoti Sahoo, +3 Final year students Asish Kumar Das and Satyanarayan Panda went for “Carnivore monitoring” in Khallikote forest organized by Forest Departmet, Government of Odisha

P. G. students went on a study tour to Central Institute of Fresh water Aquaculture, Bhubaneswar in 2015 under the guidance of Dr M. Samanta and Dr B. P. Barik.

8 U. G. students of +3 Final year mentored by Dr C. Mahapatra participated in a workshop held at SOA University, Bhubaneswar in February, 2015.

Four U. G. students and one M. Phil student observed mass nesting of Olive Ridley sea turtles with Dr B. P. Barik and Dr C. Mahapatra at Gokharkuda sea beach near Ganjam on 15th March, 2015.

Debishree Subudhi +3 2nd year was selected for Inter-University Table Tennis and represented the Berhampur University.

Harapriya Behera, +3 3rd year got 2nd position in quiz organized by SOA University. Rajesh Lenka, +3 3rd year was nominated to state level drawing competition conducted by

ABVP. M. Sonam Patro awarded 1st prize in district level debate competition on Tourism day and

2nd prize in Chancellor’s Cup English debate competition for the year 2013-14. Sasmita Behera , P. G. 2nd year was awarded 2nd prize in district level song competition on

Tourism day , 2014. Bishal Maji, +3 2nd year, attended Advanced Biotechnology Workshop, Bhubaneswar and

National Youth Convention, Pune, 2013. Asish Kumar Sahu, 6thsem, represented Berhampur University and participated in National

Level Junior Hockey, held at Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, U.P in 2012-13. Two of our students from U.G. selected for Infosys and Genpact through campus drive in

the year 2013. Two of our students from U.G. 3rd year, 2013 joined in Indian Air Force job. One of our student from U.G. 3rd year, 2013 joined in Indian Army job. Lohita Roul (U.G. 2nd year) awarded Chief Minister award Rajiv Gandhi Puraskar for NCC

and best cadet award in RDC in 2013. P. Debishree Subudhi (U.G. 2nd year) awarded prize in inter university and state level in

T. Swagatika (U.G. 2nd year) received Rajiv Gandhi Puraskar for NCC. Three of our students from U.G. 2nd year received prize in inter university cricket

competition. Rajesh Lenka (U.G. 3rd year) received prize in district level poster competition, Chatrapur,

2013. Rajesh Lenka (U.G. 3rd year) is a core member in “Greenify plantation club for plantation

programe inside the college”. Rajesh Lenka (U.G. 3rd year) is also continued his field study on species identification of

birds and collection of photographs under the guidance of Dr. Jyoti Prasad Pattnaik under the group Berhampur birds, Kalinga birds, Odisha birds.

Raj Abhisek Panda (U.G. 3rd year) participated in U.G.C. sponsored national seminar held in Khallikote (Autonomous) College, 2014 and 17th Odisha Bigyan Congress, ITER, BBSR.

Bishal Majhi (U.G. 3rd year) attended one workshop related to Biotechnology, SOA University, BBSR. He also presented a talk on topic “Science and Religion”

Mousumi Dash (U.G. 3rd year) received 1st prize in English debate and 2nd prize in Odia debate in Shakti Women’s Cell and also received 2nd prize in English essay in Students Union Competition, 2013.

Miss Simani Mohanty, 6thsem, participated in the State level Hindi Essay competition, 2012 and stood 1st and also in the State level English Essay competition, 2012 and got 3 rd

position. Miss Monali Mishra, P.G. 1st year-2012, participated in National level Essay competition,

organized by ONGC and got 1st position. Participated in District level English Essay competition on ‘Vigilance awareness’ and

stood 1st position. M. Sonam Patro, P.G. 1st year-2012, participated in many National, State and District level

competitions and secured 1st , 2nd and 3rd in different competitions. Miss Sasmita Behera, P.G. 1st year-2012, awarded as the ‘Best Graduate’ of the college. Miss Puspita Sahoo, P.G. 2nd year-2012, got the ‘P.G. Merit Scholarship’ from Institute of

Mathematics and Science Application. Six of our students from U.G. 3rd year are selected in WIPRO campus under the program

WISTA. Sri Sangram Keshari Behera, got Indian Forest Service in 2011.

2. Field study - Practical education is always preferable as compared to theoretical knowledge. So students visit to different places relevant to their course.

Every year under graduate students visit to nearby poultry farm, fish farm. Nandana Kanana and Chilika to study about the habit, habitat and breeding of wild animals, fowl and fish culture.

The post graduate students also have gone on study tour to different Universities, Hatcheries within and outside Odisha since the establishment of the department.

The UG students in the year 2012-13 visited to sericulture farm at Ramgiri, Ganjam.

UG and PG students in the year 2013-14 visited to Mahanadi Coast at Kantilo to study the fresh water aquaculture. UG students have submitted the field study report on fish farm.

A field trip of the students to Kullada was organised on 08 Feb 2015 to study the faunal diversity of the locality.

A field trip to Gandahati, Paralakhemundi of Gajapati district on 6th March, 2016.

4. Departmental student seminars – The department is continuously conducting seminars to achieve academic excellence and for diffusion of knowledge with active participation of students of all the years.

A one day UGC Sponsored One Day Inter - Departmental Seminar, “Under competency building initiatives for faculty and students under UGC XIIth plan GDA (Head 31)” was held in P.G. Department of Zoology, Khallikote University on 24th February, 2016. The theme of the seminar was “Current Trends in Zoology” and two eminent academicians and scientists of international repute Dr Tarini C. Kara, Professor in Zoology, Government of Odisha and Dr Jayakrushna Panigrahi, Secretary, Orissa Environmental Society, Bhubaneswar, India and Head, Dept. of Zoology & Environmental Science, Sri Jayadev College of Education & Technology, Bhubaneswar were invited to deliver talks on this occasion. The seminar was attended by nearly 100 students of both undergraduate and postgraduate programs of Department of Zoology, Khallikote University and about 22 faculty members of Khallikote University and its cluster colleges.
