PDA deployed National Response Team (NRT) members into Oklahoma shortly after the May

2013 tornadoes struck the state. Part of their assignment was to begin the process of finding churches and other sites that are interested in hosting volunteer work teams.

Once this list is completed, another group of NRT members will go in and train, assess and assist sites that wish to become a PDA Volunteer Village. This process, as usual, will probably take a couple of months. One of the things that takes time is finding meaningful, case-managed work for our volunteers. As

you know, PDA is a long-term recovery responder, and it takes time to set up Long-Term Recovery Groups and for the groups to hire case managers, etc.

The Joy of Unselfish Giving by: Helen Steiner Rice

Time is not measured by the years that you liveBut by the deeds that you do and the joy that you give. And from birthday to birthday, the good Lord above,

Bestows on His children the gift of His love,Asking us only to share it with others

By treating all people not as strangers but sisters and brothers.

And each day as it comes brings a chance to each one.To live to the fullest, leaving nothing undone.

That would brighten the life or lighten the load.

Of some weary traveler lost on life’s road.So it doesn’t matter how long we may live

If as long as we live we unselfishly give.Father’s Day — more than a day

Father’s Day was first observed in America in 1910. In 1923 the third Sunday of June was set

as the official day, and in 1924 President Coolidge recommended its national observance.

Today it has a fixed place in the calendar of special days in our country. But devotion to and pride in fathers does not need to wait for official approval. As long as there have been families, love and respect for fathers has existed.

Only a dad, but he gives his all To smooth the way for his children small,

Doing, with courage stern and grim, The deeds that his father did for him.

This is the line that for him I pen, Only a dad, but the best of men.

—Edgar A. Guest

If the apostle Paul prefers to speak of the Chrstian (individual-in-community) as being “in the

spirit”, John the Gospel writer favors believing community.

Both Paul and John are concerned with the new social reality, the community of disciples. Both understand the Spirit to be the means by which our risen Lord Jesus Christ remains with the community of his followers. Paul’s imagery tends to focus on the ethics of the new community which results from the new freedom from the powers of sin and death, while John’s imagery tends to emphasize the interpersonal intimacy between Christ and the community and among the members of the community.

In John 14: 8-17, John contrasts the inability of the world to either see or know the Spirit with the community’s intimate and personal knowledge of the Spirit. Knowledge comes in two varieties:

There is the knowledge that one gains through study that we can call acquired knowledge. A person can acquire a great deal of knowledge about, say, the life of Gandhi. One can read his speeches, watch old newsreels, read a biography, and through such study come to “know” Gandhi.

But those who were actually with Gandhi, who lived with him, struggled with him and worked with him, would have an entirely different kind of knowledge. It would not be knowledge about, but knowledge of Gandhi, the knowledge gained through personal experience and intimate relationship.

That is knowledge of the Spirit that John is talking about in John 14:17. Jesus says: “This is the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him or knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.”

This kind of knowledge comes only through intimate personal relationship, and such a relationship is only possible for those who love Jesus Christ and keep his commandments.

I share this with you, as we enter the Summer months.

Faithfully,

Pastor Ken

Bonnie Forbes  and Jean Biggar attended the Eastern Regional Gathering of the Presbyterian Women at Harcum College in Bryn Mawr on May 17 and 18.  Thirty-five women from Donegal, Lehigh,

Philadelphia, and Lackawanna Presbyteries attended.  Bonnie presented the craft and played the keyboard during the sessions.  Jean was the liturgist for the closing worship service.

The Bible study focused on various angels found throughout the scripture.  Each of the five sessions was led by women from the region.  The mission project was the Presbyterian Children’s Village in Rosemont with gifts going to the residential treatment program for 30 troubled girls dealing with mental health issues, often related to abuse.  Chaplain Eric Martens shared information about their programs. Representatives from various mission projects were available to share information.  Presbyterian Women support a variety of projects locally and throughout the world.

The Presbyterian Women thank all those who have helped with hosting the Coffee Hour this year.  We will not be having the Coffee Hour during the summer months but will start again in September.

Thank you -- to all who contributed a total of $300 for The Mother's Day booklet this year.

We received a letter from Rachel Brunner saying “Thank you“ for participating in the 13th annual Healthy Women Healthy Families Mother's Day Project.  This supports the life-changing activities with overseas partner churches of the PC(USA).  This year the program is being expanded beyond the four African countries that have previously been supported to include a range of partners around the world.  Your donations to Healthy Women Healthy Families through the  Mother's Day Project will provide grants that not only provide medical care for needy women, but will also provide literacy, education, and leadership training as well as support for community development projects.

Remember the GiverGod wants us to enjoy the good gifts that he gives to

us, provided that we don’t so focus on the gift that we forget the Giver. When the gift becomes more

important than the Giver, you have idolatry; when the Giver is seen through the gift, you have worship.
