GCSE Geography Kingswood trip – 9 th -13 th September 2013

Thank you for all your support in making the payments in relation to this fieldtrip. Can I please ask that those of you that still have outstanding balances please pay these ASAP.

What does my child need to take on this trip?

Students will need to bring their own towel and suitable clothing for the whole week. Please bear in mind the British weather and that this is likely to be changing throughout the week and also that we will be at a coastal location. Hopefully we will have nice weather. If this is the case please provide your child with sun cream as they will be outdoors for large periods of time. However if we have rain students will still be outdoors so waterproofs and material that will dry easier e.g. jogging bottoms would be more appropriate. Please ensure that students have sensible footwear for this trip and not flip flops. There is a tuck shop on site if students want to bring a small amount of spending money but this is not a necessity. Any students who wish to take valuables on this trip e.g. mobile phones may do so but it is entirely at their own risk, neither Kingswood or the school will be responsible if anything happens to these items.

When will students be leaving?

Students will leave school at break time on Monday 9th July so will be attending lessons 1+2. Students are responsible for ensuring that they have all the necessary equipment for these lessons. A place will be provided for student to leave their bags – students will be informed of this space when timetables are completed for September. Students will be arriving back at school on Friday 13th July at approximately 4.30pm.

Can I support my child with this over the summer?

Yes! Students can be researching coastal erosion across the UK coastline and more specifically researching the 3 sites that they will be visiting: Sea Palling, Happisburgh and Sheringham.

If you have any further questions regarding this trip please contact me on [email protected] Also if your child develops any medical issues or allergies over the summer break please can you inform me asap in September? Many thanks Miss Boughey

Year 7 and 8 Cross Curricular Community Project Day Tuesday 16 th July

What an amazingly productive and fun day! Year 7 and 8 were set the challenge to come up with a viable community facility that would be beneficial to the members of the local community. The day was introduced by Beverley Johnston from the Lottery Funded Big Local Turnford and Wormley residents’ panel who spoke to the students about how their project idea could possibly be selected and made into reality as part of the million pound lottery funded project. Students organised their Teams; they analysed community survey

data, created pitches using persuasive language, and designed 3D models of their proposed projects ready to persuade the judging panel in a Dragons Den style competition.

The five Dragons set with the tough task of deciding the overall winners were from B3 Living and CVS (part of the Big Local Lottery Funding). The final head to head battle was between the Year 7 Team: Fusion and Year 8 Team: Home away from Home. After careful consideration the judges announced the overall winners as the Year 7 Team: Fusion and their proposal for a community centre. The judges agreed that this was a very tough decision to make as the presentations were all of such high quality, although they agreed that Fusion had thought about the needs of a variety of different people in the community and therefore deserved to be announced as this Year’s overall winners of Turnford’s Cross Curricular Community project day. Congratulations to all Year 7 and 8!

BS2 Ensure all vulnerable groups are making expected progress

Donations needed for the SEND Department!

Are you planning to have a sort out during the summer holidays? We are looking for some lego sets to boost the sets that we have already.

Also any DVDs that are suitable for our pupils to watch at lunchtime in ACe would be appreciated. Anything that is a U or PG rating would be fantastic.

Donations can be given into either main or student reception marked Ace. Many thanks. Michelle Tate HLTA KS3

L2 Ensure consistency

Head’s coffee mornings for new parents

Thank you to our new parents who came into school and discussed any outstanding queries/concerns they have. Please see below for issues raised:

List of equipment needed – This is listed in our transition booklet – black/blue fountain or ball point pen, ruler with metric divisions, pencil, eraser, protractor, scientific calculator, English dictionary/thesaurus, language dictionary, student planner.

How will my child pay for food in first week? – From the first day your child will be able to use cashless catering as the letter giving information about biometric details and your parent pay password is being sent out in the holidays.

School socks – short black or white please. No over the knee socks.

PE skirts – do they still exist – As in the PE list in the transition booklet blue PE shorts or blue skirts are a compulsory part of the girls’ PE kit and can be obtained from Hawkins at the Old Pond or Penny’s School Outfitters in Turners Hill. Penny’s also stock blue skorts (combination of shorts and skirt) and these are proving popular with our girls. The PE polo shirt should have the school logo.

The enrichment jumper – the blue enrichment hoody is not optional as it forms part of Wednesday’s enrichment uniform. This is purchased from school only and can also be used on colder days for PE.

A1 Strong and robust Leadership

Our new parent calendar will be on our website from later today.

TL1 Highest expectations

Uniform

I am writing to thank the majority of Parents for their support in ensuring that students come to school equipped and in the correct uniform. However we have a significant number of Parents who are failing to support the school by continuing to allow students to attend on a regular basis without the correct uniform. This reflects poorly on the school and its students and continues to undermine our reputation in the community.

If you have genuine hardship reasons for not being able to replace a piece of uniform please contact your head of year for support.

Please note from September if your child arrives without correct uniform we will be removing them from their break time as an immediate consequence and continuing to put the student in our Friday night 2 hour detentions.

This approach has been the most effective this year in reducing poor uniform offenders. Below we have provided very clear pictures of what is acceptable and unacceptable to avoid confusion.

However can I state your children are absolutely aware of what is expected of them as this message is repeated to them on a weekly basis.

Suitable school shoes for girls and boys.

No shirts hanging out please and collared shirts must have a tie. The plain white polo shirt can be worn without a tie for the summer term only. Girls too. P.E.polo shirts should have Turnford badge.

We hope this clarifies some points but please call the school if you have any queries. Many thanks for your support in our drive for correct uniform and equipment.

One Night Only – Turnford School Raises £2157.16Turnford School held a Fundraising Charity Event On Saturday Evening. It was an evening of Singing, Dancing and Musical Celebration. Students, Parents and Staff entertained the audience of over 200. Students, Parents and Staff have been practising for a number of weeks in their own time. Local businesses donated an array of fantastic prizes for the raffle. We managed to raise a total of £2157.16 – this will be divided between Breast Cancer Care and the convalescence of two colleagues that are current undergoing treatment for Cancer. We would like to thank everybody that supported this event.
