Welcome to Light of the World Academy,A Ministry of Ephesus Baptist Church

Philosophy

It is the philosophy of Light of the World Academy that every child is a gift from God, fearfully and wonderfully made. As parents, we are responsible for teaching our children about God and raising them to be moral citizens.

In that belief we wish to provide an enriching, safe, and loving environment where children can learn, through structured and unstructured activities, how to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Our intention is to meet the needs of each individual student while in our care, provide a balanced approach to his/her physical, social, emotional, academic, and spiritual development and assist parents in meeting their responsibility in raising moral children.

We strive to accomplish and implement these goals through many varied developmental experiences and activities, putting our trust in God’s guidance and basing our decisions on Christian principles and ultimately, on the authority of the Bible. 2nd Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Goals

To provide a safe, secure, nurturing environment To provide interesting and exciting activities that promote learning To introduce children to God’s love and His Word (the Bible) To introduce foundational truths of the Christian faith To encourage the use of manners To encourage children to respect themselves and others To encourage creativity and logical thinking To provide opportunities for students to practice new skills To offer encouragement and praise

To offer the absolute best Christian curriculum available

Statement of Faith

We believe in the inspiration of the Bible, equally and all parts and that it is without error in its origin; it is our sole authority and final appeal in matters of faith and practice.

We believe there is only one true God, eternally existing in three persons- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Who spoke all things into existence.

We believe in the preexistence, incarnation, sinless life, miracles, substitutional death, bodily resurrection, ascension to Heaven, and second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We believe in the person and the work of the Holy Spirit that He is equal to God the Father and the Son and is of the same nature. We believe His holy work includes the conviction and conversion of sinners and that He seals, teaches, guides, sanctifies, and empowers believers.

We believe in the fall of man, the need of repentance by the leading of the Holy Spirit on the basis of grace alone, and the resurrection of all to life with God or eternal separation from Him determined by each individual’s personal decision to receive Christ as Lord and Savior.

We believe that salvation binds us together as a body of believers, united in Christ and that we are kept by the power of God through faith unto eternal life.

We believe as followers of Jesus Christ our purpose is to continue His good works as witnesses of His saving grace and to make disciples by sharing His love and teaching the gospel of salvation to all the world.

Light of the World Academy will follow the policies of the Virginia Department of Social Services as well as any policies of Ephesus Baptist Church in determining the procedures of operation for the school.

Hours of Operation

Light of the World Academy operates from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, September 05, 2017 through June 12, 2018. Parents may begin bringing children at 8:00a.m. when the doors are unlocked and may pick-up children at 3:30 p.m. Before and After Care is available upon request.

If payment has not been received by the end of the week, termination of enrollment may result. If by 4:15 p.m. the student has not been picked up and the parent has not contacted the center, the authorized persons listed on the enrollment application will be notified. licensing by the Commonwealth of Virginia and will operate under the Code of Compliance as a Religiously Exempt Christian School. We will comply with all requirements and policies set forth by the Virginia Department of Social Services and the Virginia Department of Education.

Liability Insurance

Light of the World Academy is covered under Ephesus Baptist Church’s public liability insurance. This policy provides coverage in the event that someone files a suit against the school for personal or bodily harm suffered during the operation of the school as a result of negligence. This type of insurance is not to be confused with accidental injury insurance, which provides medical benefits to the injured regardless of whether a suit is filed or the injury is a result of the school’s negligence. The school is not liable for accidents or illnesses occurring to the child while he/she is in the school’s care, unless proof is presented that the accident or illness was the direct result of the school’s negligence.

Curriculum/Academics

Light of the World Academy uses the Christian curriculum, Sonlight. The Mission Statement of Sonlight is, “The way you wish you’d been taught.” It is a literature-rich program that teaches concepts through quality historical fiction and biographies. When searching for a Home school Curriculum for my boys this one stood out far above the rest. As a veteran teacher, I was looking for quality and that is what I have found with Sonlight. Our students love school. Sonlight offers a comprehensive curriculum that includes History, Geography, Bible, Reading, Science, Language Arts, Handwriting, Math, and electives such as Music, Art, Computer, and Physical Education.

The school will provide a daily schedule consisting of structured and unstructured activities based upon your child’s developmental needs. Children will have an opportunity to practice fine and gross motor skills, learn to communicate effectively with others, build physical and mental capacities, develop a relationship with God, practice manners, and develop skills needed to learn how to read, write, and work with numbers. Our curriculum is challenging, and students are expected to accept responsibility for completing work on time to the best of their ability.

Page 7: ephesusbaptist.churchephesusbaptist.church/media/5994e9764efe0.docx  · Web viewMichelle Jett Robinson. ... of the World Academy exists to partner with Christian parents to educate

The music and art programs are taught by teachers who come into the school each week to instruct our students and add creativity and enrichment to our core curriculum. Physical education is an integral part of our program and students will exercise daily. Computer instruction begins in third grade and builds each year using various programs to enhance skills.

Homework

Homework is an extension of class work and is intended to reinforce learning, review skills, and provide opportunity to strengthen research skills. Students will be given long and short-term assignments.

Since each student works at his/her own pace, the following time schedule is to be used as a guideline.

Kindergarten 20 minutes/nightFirst Grade 30 minutes/nightSecond Grade 40 minutes/nightThird-Fifth Grade 60 minutes/nightSixth-Ninth Grade 90 minutes/night

Student Responsibilities

Students are required to complete and hand in all assignments on time.

It is the responsibility of all students to review math skills on a daily basis. In addition, independent reading should be a part of each day’s routine.

Bible Memory verses should be reviewed daily.

Parent Responsibilities

Parents should provide a structured time and a quiet place for working at home. This should be a time when there are no interruptions. Televisions, phones, computers, video games, and other distractions should not be allowed during study time. Consistency is the key to success.Parents are strongly encouraged to read with (and to) children and to review math facts and Bible verses with them daily.

Parents should check Homework Agendas/Folders nightly to see what is due the next day. Supervision and checking of homework depends upon the age of the child and the

student’s level of independence.

Report Cards

Report cards are an important communication tool between home and school. Parents are encouraged to look over them carefully and discuss them with their children.

Signed report cards should be returned to the school within five days.

Preschool students receive written reports and checklists in January and June.

Kindergartens through Ninth grade students receive progress reports quarterly.

Testing

Testing will be conducted in the spring of each year. Scholastic School Readiness and Stanford 10 Achievement Tests (Subject to change) will be used.

ConductDiscipline

Observance #1 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”Observance #2 “And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” Matthew 22:37-39

Discipline will be handled in a manner in which to develop positive, responsible behavior. Positive guidance, modeling, replacement behavior, and conscious discipline will be used to empower children to develop self-control, self-regulation, personal responsibility, and good behavior. Time-out will be used after a warning has been issued in the early grades. Our CRT program is used in the later grades. There may be times when parents will be asked to pick-up their children if certain behaviors are exhibited. These behaviors include, but are not limited to: biting, using foul language (profanity), hitting or threatening teachers, and/or other forms of disrespect. If these behaviors continue, the child may be suspended from school for a

period of time. Children will not be allowed to attend any school functions or events during that time. Expulsion or repeated suspension may result in termination of enrollment. It is assumed that if parents have enrolled a child in the school, they will fully support the school in its enforcement of the behavior code.

At Light of the World Academy we desire, not just a safe learning environment but a respectful and encouraging one as well. In our handbook we clearly state that one of our goals is to help students learn how to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner; encouraging them to respect themselves and others. Therefore; we have decided to implement a disciplinary system in which character and conduct go hand in hand.

In addition to the rules and regulations stated in this handbook we would like to add a detailed step-by-step plan for character development where students are held accountable for their attitudes and words. Matthew 12:36-37 states, “But I tell you that men will have to give account on the Day of Judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” If words are this important to Christ then I think we should take ours more seriously.

If a student gets into a confrontation with another student they will proceed to the ‘talking mat’ where they will be guided through a series of steps to conflict resolution. If one or both students refuse to go through conflict resolution then they will be escorted to the office for some Character Re-adjustment Time (CRT). This is like time-out but for older children. While in the office students will do their assigned class work. They will be separated from the class until they are ready to respond in an appropriate manner. We believe that since you are paying for your child to be here, it is a privilege to be in the classroom and students who are disrupting the learning environment will be removed. We are protecting the students and your investment. If a student is disrupting the teacher or classroom in general, he or she will receive one warning. If the child continues to disrupt the class he or she will be asked to leave the classroom and sit in the hall. If he or she continues to disrupt, the child will be escorted to the office for some CRT. Work will be sent with them. If after the allotted time (this depends on the child’s age) the child is ready to return to the classroom he will be invited back to class with open arms, no hard feelings. Appropriate responses to a returning child, “We missed you.” or “Welcome back.” We hope that with this system in place

Page 11: ephesusbaptist.churchephesusbaptist.church/media/5994e9764efe0.docx  · Web viewMichelle Jett Robinson. ... of the World Academy exists to partner with Christian parents to educate

children will realize that being in class is more beneficial than being alone and adjust their attitudes accordingly. Parents will be notified at pick-up if their child has been to CRT.If a child visits CRT more than 2 times in a month he or she will have after school detention and a conference will be held with the parents when they come to retrieve the child. If a child has detention more than 2 times in a quarter, suspension will be required. If this behavior continues dismissal will be the only course of action.

* We withhold the right to terminate a contract with a child or family at any time we deem necessary.

1. Lying, cheating, stealing, or the intentional use of foul language2. Destruction of property3. Possession or use of alcohol, drugs, or tobacco products4. Mental or physical abuse, harassment or threats(bullying)5. Possession of firearms, explosives, or dangerous weapons6. Leaving school grounds without permission7. or loss of a privilege may also be consequences for a first offense.Second Offense: CRT for student, parent conference with the appropriate teacher or

administrator.Third Offense: CRT and after-school detention for student, possible suspension.

Parent-conference with director.Fourth Offense: Suspension or dismissal, followed by suggested counseling.

The administration reserves the right to adjust the consequences depending on the severity of the offense or mitigating circumstances. Parents may appeal a disciplinary decision to the director. If a parent is dissatisfied with the result, he/she may appeal by writing a letter to the School Board (200 words or less). The director will present the letter to the School Board at the next monthly meeting.

Care of School Property

Students are responsible for taking care of school/church property. They should be respectful of our church, Ephesus Baptist, which lets the school use their facilities. The halls, bathrooms, furniture, classrooms, and grounds are to be kept as clean as possible.

Dress Code Policy

Students should come to school dressed in neat, clean, modest clothing that is appropriate for an educational setting. Parents should check student attire each morning to be sure that the child is in compliance with the dress code at Light of the World Academy.

The following attire is not acceptable: tops which expose undergarments or midriffs (any see-through garments) tank tops, anything with spaghetti straps, tight-fitting/skin-tight clothing mini skirts, short shorts-(Both shorts and skirts must come down to no shorter

than palm length above knees/ about 4 inches)● tight leggings or skin-tight pants/jeans with shirts that do not cover the bottom

Page 13: ephesusbaptist.churchephesusbaptist.church/media/5994e9764efe0.docx  · Web viewMichelle Jett Robinson. ... of the World Academy exists to partner with Christian parents to educate

(Leggings may be worn with dresses or skirts that meet the above length requirement) Leggings that come as an outfit with a shirt that covers the bottom may be worn in good taste

● jeans with holes or rips are not acceptable clothing imprinted with profanity or questionable phrases/pictures (alcohol or

tobacco advertisements, etc...) clothing deemed inappropriate by administration Slick-soled shoes, flip-flops, and clogs

All sandals must have a back strap.

If a student does not dress appropriately for school, they will be asked to call home for a change of clothes or will be given something appropriate to wear.Children must bring outerwear that is suited to the weather in order to allow outdoor play. All sweaters, hats, coats, mittens, etc. must be labeled with the child’s name. Children should have an entire change of clothes, including socks and underwear, suitable for the current season, in a labeled bag, to be kept at school.

Communication

Attendance

Student attendance and punctuality are essential to ensure continuous progress in school. Prolonged absences from school put teachers in a difficult situation trying to play ‘catch-up’ with one student while keeping the rest of the class on track. Make-up work is a poor substitute for classroom instruction, depriving the student of pertinent information.

When a student returns to school, he must have a note from a parent stating the date and reason for the absence.A student is tardy if he/she is not present in the classroom by 8:30 AM. The student’s parent must check him in at the office and explain the reason for the tardiness. Four ‘tardies’ constitutes one absence. If a student leaves school early, the parent should send a note to the teacher explaining the reason for the early dismissal and the time that the child will be picked up.

Financial obligations/Tuition

Page 14: ephesusbaptist.churchephesusbaptist.church/media/5994e9764efe0.docx  · Web viewMichelle Jett Robinson. ... of the World Academy exists to partner with Christian parents to educate

Light of the World Academy operates on a non-profit basis. Our financial operation is totally dependent upon fees collected for services rendered. Tuition will be paid on a monthly basis, unless an agreement between the parent and director states otherwise. All fees will be paid in advance by 4:00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. Any payment received after Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. must include a $5.00 late charge. Should fees remain unpaid by the end of the week and no special arrangements have been made with the director, enrollment may be terminated. Tuition may also be paid in one lump sum prior to September 1st, or in 2 equal installments paid on September 1st and January 1st.

Full tuition is required even if absenteeism occurs. There will be no refunds for missed days.

Two weeks’ notice is required in order to terminate your contract with the school.

A late charge is assessed on payments more than ten days past due. The rate is 5% per overdue payment. If an account becomes delinquent (account not paid in full by June 15) charges accrue on the balance at an annual rate of 18%. If the school must begin collection procedures, the signer(s) of the enrollment agreement must pay all the costs.

Parental Concerns

If during the course of the year a problem arises, first go to the teacher for help. Please send a note or make a phone call (443-5792) to set up an appointment time to discuss the problem. This enables the teacher and the parent to meet and have the concern discussed in a productive, focused manner in a quiet setting. Parents should come to the conference prepared with an outlined problem and teachers should be ready to offer suggestions for solving the problem. If, after meeting with the teacher, the problem is not resolved, parents should direct their concerns to the director. If the director is unable to resolve the problem, a typed letter (200 words or less) may be written to the School Board. The director will present the letter at the next School Board meeting. Parents should respond to school correspondence and return signed papers, permission slips, and report cards in a timely manner.

Parent conferences may be scheduled at any time during the school year by either the parent or the teacher. There will also be a designated day for conferences in the fall.Parents are welcome to visit a classroom; however, arrangements should be made in advance.Parents should notify the school in writing if changes are to be made in a child’s transportation arrangements.

The lunch container should be one your child can open independently. Lunch boxes are placed in the refrigerator until lunch. All items must be labeled! If lunch is forgotten, students will receive milk, crackers, and fruit for lunch. Morning snacks are provided by parents who sign-up at the beginning of the year for one week of snacks.School Closings

The school will close for severe weather conditions and/or other unplanned events. Light of the World Academy will make every attempt to notify parents in advance should these conditions occur. Parents are notified by a group text or notification will be given via WRAR- 105.5 FM radio station and CBS. Otherwise, parents will be notified by telephone in an emergency.

The child must be free of symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school, unless otherwise instructed by the Director. If the child has experienced any of these symptoms at home (i.e. at night or over the weekend) they must be free of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.

Safety Rules

Unauthorized persons will not be allowed to pick-up children. Identification of authorized persons will be requested from any individual unknown to the staff. If our staff feels that it is not in the best interest of the child to leave with any authorized person, the child will remain at school until a parent can be contacted. (For example, if the staff suspects someone of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs, the child will remain at the school.)

Never leave your child (or any other child) unattended in a parked car, in the parking area or on the grounds. Children must never enter or leave the building or your vehicle without adult supervision.

Do not allow your child to run around in the parking lot. Drivers entering or leaving the area may not see your child.

Always properly restrain your child in your vehicle. If a child is seen by the staff arriving or leaving the premises not properly restrained in a safety seat, we are required by law to report this as a violation of the law and as a form of neglect.

If children are playing inside or outside on the playground when you arrive to pick-up your child, always make contact with a teacher before leaving with your child. Never lift your child over the playground fence to leave.

Periodic safety drills will be held to familiarize children and staff with appropriate procedures and emergency evacuation routes from the building.

Staff must be notified in writing of any changes in authorized persons, address, place of employment, telephone numbers, etc. Any changes should be noted in your child’s record immediately.

Please do not post pictures of our students on Facebook without a parent’s knowledge and permission.

Holidays/Parties

We will celebrate holidays with a special party or program. On these special occasions we will use the opportunity to teach Christian beliefs and traditions associated with many of these holidays. In all of our teaching, we are committed to clearly presenting the biblical account for each holiday we may celebrate. Common symbols of the holiday may be used (i.e. Santa Claus, Easter Bunny) but will not be our focus of the holiday.

Parents in grades K – 5 will be asked to sign up for party duty once per year. Each party will last approximately one hour, 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. Feel free to serve refreshments and/or organize games and other activities. Parents are responsible for the food, drinks, and paper products. Parents are not required to attend the party.

Field TripsWe will go on various field trips during the year. In order for all children to participate, we must have parents drive and help chaperone students. Field trips may be cancelled if we do not have enough drivers. Parents will be informed before we go, and permission slips must be obtained for each child. We will have many in-house field trips as well, such as fire safety, dental hygiene, etc…

Thank you for your cooperation in these matters. Our staff will make every effort to provide many rewarding and enriching experiences for you and your child. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions or concerns. Your suggestions and comments are invaluable to the success of the school. This handbook has been prepared so you may know and better understand the policies and goals of Light of the World Academy as we work together to enhance your child’s development.
