do it. In just one generation we have witnessed the death of hypocrisy. It has been wiped out. And much of the credit goes to the young people. They have seen it in their parents, they have detected it in business, and have scorned it in government. Their plea has been, “Tell it like it is” and hypocrisy has been slain in the States. But somehow I find it more natural to weep at the funeral rather than rejoice. I know that hypocrisy is evil, Jesus was constantly denouncing it. In fact, some of the most scathing language our Lord ever uttered was directed to the hypocrites of His day. They laid heavy burdens on men’s shoulders but they themselves would not move them with their finger. They made a show of religion. They appeared to be righteous but within they were full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Jesus compared them to whitewashed tombs, “which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” In lashing out at them He asked, “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?” As a people we have revolted against hypocrisy. That’s well and good. But in making the 180 degree turn, we have sped past righteousness into the ditch of open sin. of Christ Route 116 Pine Mountain Valley, GA. 31823 Regular Scheduled Services SUNDAY: Bible Class 10:00 Worship 11:00 Worship 6:00 WEDNESDAY: Bible Class 7:30 Local Evangelist: Tommy Thomas Office 706 - 628 - 5117 Home 706 – 628 – 5229 July 3, 2016 4 Wh Pine M ountain V alley church ofC hrist R oute 116 Pine M ountain V alley, GA. 31823 R egular Scheduled Services SU N D A Y : Bible C lass 10:00 W orship 11:00 W orship 6:00 W EDNESDAY: Bible C lass 7:30 LocalEvangelist: Tom m y Thom as Office 706 -628 -5117 H om e 706 – 628 – 5229 Em ail PM VChurch@ yahoo.com February 19, 2012

generation we have witnessed the death of hypocrisy.

Jesus compared them to whitewashed tombs, “which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.” In lashing out at them He asked, “You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?”

As a people we have revolted against hypocrisy. That’s well and good. But in making the 180 degree turn, we have sped past righteousness into the ditch of open sin. Hypocrisy has been said to be the homage that vice pays to virtue. Where there is none, where vice has ceased to shroud or veil itself, a very advanced state of wickedness has been reached.

Try as I may, I find no consolation in the death of hypocrisy in our society. Women confess their abortions and urge their friends to have one. Homosexuals openly parade their sins on television talk shows. Young people blatantly live a hedonistic lifestyle. Profanity has stalked out of the locker room to invade every area of blushless society. Pornography is openly available to children. And we sit around and congratulate ourselves on not being hypocrites. Listen to the words of an ancient prophet of Israel: “They proclaim their sin

like Sodom, they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil upon themselves.” It is hard not to long for the good old days – the days when you could find a hypocrite. - John Gipson

Taking God’s Name in Vain

Due to the fact that we live in a society that for the most part shows little if any respect for God, we are inundated by people constantly taking the name of the Lord in vain. Often we Christians inadvertently pick up these habits.

I am confident most (hopefully all) of us do not commit the sin of using God’s name in conjunction with any type of cursing or swearing. But I have heard some Christians using words and phrases that are equally as vain and therefore sinful, and I am sure they did not even realize it.

Phrases such as “Oh my God” and “Dear Lord”, as used in common speech and on many TV shows, definitely fall within the category of condemned speech. The words “gosh” and “golly” are vain because they are euphemisms (mild expressions) for the name “God.” Likewise the word “gee” (as in “gee whiz”) is vain because it is a euphemism for the name “Jesus” (per the Random House College Dictionary).

We who love and respect God should avoid these expressions and words because they detract from God’s nature as the Eternal Creator and Master of the universe. - Steve Garrett
