In the classroom their teachers will devote more time to shared reading, reading aloud, and word study. They will learn to read alone and with a partner. The children will learn that reading is all around them. Our youngsters are reading information books that will help them to learn all about their world. Old story book favorites will be read over and over so that after some time the students will learn to read them too. This is an exciting time for young readers. Students will work on their foundational skills like phonics, phonemic awareness, and concepts about print that will allow the youngsters to take off as readers. We look forward to the literacy journey ahead! Zooming in on Letters and Sounds The students will work around their knowledge of letters and sounds and use their Sound Power to read tricky words. They will learn how to look for the initial sound, beginning consonant sounds, blends, diagraphs along with meaning and structure to solve tricky words. Becoming Stronger Readers As the students develop a wealth of reading strategies they will become able to read more complex books with accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Reading snap words automatically is hugely emphasized to reach this goal. All of these skills will lead to the students understanding the importance of thinking and talking more deeply about books. _ The Writing Workshop Welcome to KINDERGARTEN!!!!! At Prospect School we use the Lucy Calkins Writing model. Your little one will begin with understanding that “We Are All Writers.” They will be taught that young writers think of something that they know about and use pictures and words to put their ideas on paper. The students are always eager and proud to showcase what they are learning and can do in kindergarten so get ready to hear about and see evidence of their hard work. The Math Workshop During the month of October, Kindergarten students are learning how to represent, count, compare and write numbers 0 to 5. Students practice one-to-one counting of objects to answer “How Many”. As they begin to understand that numbers can be represented in different ways, students then learn to compare the numbers (Same, GreaterThan, or Less Than).
