ANNUAL REPORT FROM CONGREGATION CHAIRMAN

Congratulations and thank you for:

1. Rev Temukisa for her ministry and friendship to us.2. Lay teams who provide the ministry when Temukisa is not available.3. Church fete – another successful event financially, socially and pastorally. Special

thanks to Lynda Smith and her team, plus the many spontaneous helpers. The benefits of friendly teamwork and community connection were quite evident throughout.

4. Property Team’s good work. More help is always welcome.

The not so good news relates to the declining numbers as we age and seem to be less able to compete with the many counter attractions on Sundays. In this context I pay tribute to our dedicated people who maintain Worship @ 9, the 10.45 service, Friday School, mainly music, Messy Church and the other pastoral activities to help make the Church relevant in the community.

Finally, our particular thanks go to all elders, office bearers, cleaners, organist, band, projectionists and choir, and all who serve on any of the church rosters, all for our collective benefit.

As a result of significant health problems and several years of rather poor chairmanship, I must resign from this position. I thank you all for your support and help.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM CHURCH COUNCIL

Church Council has worked during the year to ensure that the congregation fulfils its responsibility as a worshipping community of the Synod of Victoria-Tasmania. The reports from the various teams provide an insight into our activity.

Synod set its Vision and Mission Principles during the year and so I report in line with the Mission principles.

1. Share the Good News of Jesus Christ – Our worship opportunities continue to be two Sunday morning services, plus Messy Church bi-monthly, mainly music weekly with a strong Christian focus in songs and messages, and Friday school with craft and discussion for pre-

school children and parents/carers. We are grateful for the leadership from Rev Temukisa, the lay leaders and the Worship Team.

2. Nurture followers of Christ in live-giving communities of reconciliation – Bible studies have been undertaken by the Growing and Learning Team and by the Prayer Breakfast group. The Pastoral Team have had special discussions to assist carers in their roles. KYB (Know your Bible), The Pilgrimage and Retreat provide further chances to develop our understanding.

3. Respond in compassion to human need – Appeals have been supported with great enthusiasm for Cottage by the Sea, Share Lenten appeal, East Africa famine, Assembly Flood appeal, Share Pancake appeal, Act for Peace Christmas Bowl, UnitingWorld goat appeal, Share Winter appeal, Drysdale Family Services Food Bank, Uniting Barwon Christmas gifts and food, Wycliffe Bible Translators retiring offering, Presbytery Play Café project, Bellarine Schools support, Shoebox appeal, and the Ugandan compassion calendars.

4. Live justly and seek justice for all – Some members of the congregation have taken part in letter writing or petitions to support Synod Justice Unit issues.

5. Care for creation – The Property Team has looked after the property well with support at working bees from congregation members – our surrounds look good. We have taken over from Council responsibility for mowing the grass (except for the Pioneer Park section).

6. Listen to each generation and culture so as to live out the Gospel in fresh ways - We are represented at Presbytery and provide input into Presbytery and Synod activities relating to Messy Church. We recognise the importance of young children and give them a chance to contribute in mainly music, Messy Church and Friday school. We can always say it would be nice to have more involvement but know that at least 60 children each week are exposed to a Christian focus. Rev Temuikisa has introduced us to some multi-cultural aspects.

7. Pursue God’s mission in partnership – Ecumenical relations for the Walk of Witness, the World Day of Prayer and the Christmas carol performance at the supermarket bring us in contact with the other churches in our community. Many members of the congregation assist with the Op Shop that supports Uniting Barwon. Being part of the Linked Congregations of Bellarine allows us to support activities in Portarlington and St. Leonards.

Thank you to all for whatever part you play in supporting our congregation – attendance is just as important as to leading a service. Financially it is difficult and we have to control our expenditure and really think about what we want to do. Volunteers are always required and we appreciate any help provided. The pastoral support to those experiencing illness or grief shows our true Christian responsibility.

You can be assured that Church Council is committed to Christ being our focus and guide and that we are not just running a business.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM UNITING CHURCH ADULT FELLOWSHIP (UCAF)

Ten meetings have been held during the year with average attendance of 6-10 people. Members participate in leading worship for the meeting on a roster basis. We continue to use the material from the magazine “Network” for special services.

Marg MacGillivray gave an interesting talk on her visit to Uganda, where she met the child she sponsors through “Compassion”. An enjoyable afternoon was spent at the home of Glenys Benney trimming stamps.

Our birthday lunch was held at the Queenscliff Bowling Club and was enjoyed by all. The UCAF combined spring celebration was held at the Queenscliff Uniting Church this year. And finally the Peninsula combined Christmas service and Lunch was held at the Ocean Grove Uniting Church in November with 9 members from Drysdale attending.

We hope to continue our informal fellowship during 2018.

ANUUAL REPORT FROM MINISTER

“Yarta Wandatha: The land is speaking. The people are speaking.” (Denise Champion)

“Following Christ, walking together as First and Second Peoples, seeking community, compassion and justice for all creation” (Synod of VICTAS Vision and Mission Principles)

The Spirit of God continues to be revealed through the beauty of nature and the faithfulness of the people in worship, in witness and in service. In our following Christ, and walking together as First and Second peoples, and in our seeking to live out of the “prophetic consciousness” (Brueggemann), offering justice and compassion to all of God’s creation – we affirm that we “belong to the people of God on the way to the promised end.” (BOU, #18).

Thanks be to God for the ways in which we as followers of Christ, leaders and community, continue to build each other up in faith and love; to sustain hope and encouraging the congregation to a fuller participation in Christ’s mission in the world.

2017 presented us with exciting new possibilities and opportunities to journey together as linked-congregations in the Bellarine Peninsula, experiencing both the joys and challenges of ministry and mission in our time and place and continuing to nurture and foster loving and respectful relationships.

The Pilgrimage was a brilliant spiritual nourishment to kick start the year. The commitment to equipping leaders through the Leaders Retreat, the Safe Church Training (in house); as well as participating in Messy Church, Mainly Music, Regen Ministries (external) have all contributed to our life and living out our faith in Christ.

We rejoiced in the baptism of children, as well as celebrating with couples who affirmed their love and commitment to each other through marriage. We also honoured and farewelled loved ones and those who have died. As a community of Christ, we stood together with those who were grieving and offering them love and support.

To all leaders and volunteers that continue to support diverse ways in which the church engages with people both within and outside church (e.g. Hosting afternoon teas, pancake evening, study programs), as well as the wider community (e.g. various appeals, loose change ministry, Father’s Day dinner, op shop, shoe boxes, and fair), must be commended.

The ‘Regenerating the Church’ Strategy of the Presbytery – a culture that embraces and nurtures new models of missional Church – continues to flourish within our life as congregation, in particular the mainly music program, the messy church, Friday school, the craft group, and coffee & chat activities. These ministry and mission activities and programs, continue to be a beacon of hope to many individuals and families. Thank you to leaders and volunteers for your passion and commitment.

The ecumenical relationship between ourselves and other churches in the Bellarine continues to be fostered through the Walk of Witness Services, Carols at Christmas, the World Day of Prayer as well as the ministers’ network.

Thank you for your support, love and faithfulness in the ministry and mission of Christ in our community and beyond. Thank you for the compassion and generosity offered to my family and I during times of grief, especially as I travelled overseas for family funerals.

2018 comes with its own demands and challenges. May our ‘prophetic consciousness’ that is inspired and shaped by Christ, offers us grace and strength to live as Christ’s community sharing God’s blessing with others and the land that nourishes us.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM GROWING & LEARNING TEAM

The Growing and Learning team still consists of only three members. More people are needed as input and ideas at the moment are very limited. Please consider joining our team.

A two week Lenten study was held in March at Ken and Pat Handley’s home. About twelve people attended and enjoyed the sessions.

Bob Stevenson was kind enough to agree to run a two week Advent Bible Study. This was held on the first two Tuesdays of December at Ken and Pat Handley’s home and was enjoyed by those who could attend.

The mainly music program has now been running for nine years, and is still as successful as ever. We were lucky to have Glenda Vuillermin join the team and she has become one of the key session leaders - an answered prayer for mm. Jen Marsham has helped out for the past few years but has now moved on as her daughter is no longer attending. Jen has been a great help to the team. The support of the congregation and in particular those who help with morning tea or in a bigger part on Wednesday mornings is very much appreciated.

The Friday School group met weekly with a core group of five families who attending each week. We covered many aspects of both the old and new testaments in 2017, and it was lovely to see both the children and the mums forming strong bonds and becoming firm friends. Many theological questions were raised by the mums during the year and the opportunity for discussions on faith was fabulous (these happening while the children were playing – Friday School seems to be as much for the mums as for the little ones).

The KYB group met each Monday morning with Lynda hosting at her home, and Pat Handley hosting when Lynda was not available. A new group has commenced with six members. The group of ladies (from St Leonards, Ocean Grove and Clifton Springs) will meet at the home of Carol Lascelles. How wonderful that this ministry is growing.

The Growing and Learning team would like suggestions for Bible Studies or any other way that people can get together to discuss their faith and continue to learn. The same people seem to attend our studies each time, so maybe suggestions of a different format of study or a different time slot might help to get others involved.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM PASTORAL TEAM

Thank you to the members of our Pastoral Care Team for their commitment to our congregation in 2017. It was a year of illness for many in our congregation and we have been blessed to have Temukisa, who has done a mighty job visiting the sick in both to hospitals and homes. This certainly assists the work of our Pastoral Care Team as we also try to support those who are ill.

I would like to acknowledge the commitment of Jen Davis, who has been a wonderful member of our team for many years. Jen has stepped down from her role on our team and we will miss her contribution.

At our for Pastoral Care Team meetings in 2017 the team worked through a booklet called ‘Pastoral Care with Older People’. We also looked at the Code of Ethics around Confidentiality and Privacy. We review our rolls and look for ways to support each other and members of the congregation. Please contact your pastoral carer if you have any issues or concerns, or would like home communion if you are unable to attend church regularly.

Our ‘Guess Who’s Coming to High Tea’ was held on 2 April with a total of 45 participants to 7 homes. Thank to those who so willing make their homes available for this event, it is now looked forward to each year.

Coffee and Chat continues at the Zoo Café from 10.30am on Thursdays. A small group support Coffee and Chat and invite you to come along, with friends or neighbours, you will be made welcome and transportation can be arranged.

All members of the congregation were invited to attend our Messy Church/mainly music Christmas Celebration on 10 December. It was great to see so many of you come along in support of these two alternative services of our church, and have fun and fellowship with younger families in our community.

A New Year Eve’s games night was again organised by Wayne for those who wished to get together with friends and celebrate NYE without having a late night.

Finally I would like to thank you all for the wonderful support you give each other, Pastoral Care is a responsibility of each member of our congregation and you do it well.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM PROPERTY TEAM

The Property committee would like to thank all who helped to maintain the church gardens and property during the year. We would like to give a big thank you to all who turned up at our quarterly working bees. Thank you to those who worked in the garden, cleaned windows and did other jobs around the church.

It seems to be a yearly job to hire scaffolding so we can reach the ceilings in the hall to clean the girders, fans, vents and air conditioning filters, and to also change the burnt out fluorescent tubes. To hire the 4 meter scaffold is a cost to the church but is important from a safety aspect.

The curtains in the hall (high level) have been replaced. A big thank you to Val Lestrange for making them and Phil Spivey for erecting them.

In May 2017 the City of Greater Geelong ceased mowing our lawn and looking after our rose garden. We have not come up with evidence that they were to mow in perpetuity, so we have started a mowing roster. We have the loan of a ride-on mower and thanks to the people who have put their hand up to go on the roster.

The painting of the buttress on the north side (Scout hall side) is ongoing.

The gas heaters have been repaired and serviced at a great cost.

Floor coverings for the back foyer are still on going.

The sound system has been updated thanks to help from a Presbytery grant.

Once again the State election will make use of our hall on the 24/11/2018.

The property committee consists of Ian McLaverty (chair), Ken Handley (scribe), Tony Freemantle(Hall Hirer), Colleen Diamond, John MacGillivray, Ian Cook, Phil Spivey and Bruce Van Every.

ANNUAL REPORT FROM WORSHIP TEAM

The overall intent of this ministry does not really vary greatly. The ministry is conscious that we have been created to worship and glorify God.

What is the role of this ministry?

To work in a spirit of truth and understanding with the incumbent Minister of the Word in providing ministry and mission to both worship groups (10.45 and Worship @ 9) and to the wider community in response to the Gospel message.

What does this ministry do?

DUC 2017 Annual Report 8

Page 9: drysdale.unitingchurch.org.au · Web viewDRYSDALE UNITING CHURCH. ANNUAL REPORT . OF. 201. 7. Our Vision: Reaching out with God’s love and care. Reports are given by …

The Worship Team comprises members from 10.45 and Worship @ 9 and the Minister. It meets quarterly to ensure the provision of weekly (and other times) worship services where Jesus Christ is proclaimed as Saviour of the world.

Some other aspects of this ministry are outreach, healing and nurturing.

What is the goal of this ministry?

To extend God’s Kingdom here on earth through regular Sunday worship services actively sharing our faith in showing the love of God and reflecting Christ in the community.

To continue reaching out to the wider community through faith based worship and programs such as Messy Church, Mainly Music, Friday school, Annual Pilgrimage and Annual Retreat.

Fortnightly communal prayer and monthly prayer breakfast provides other avenues for enriching our faith as well as fellowship with other church members.

Reflecting on the year:

The Worship Team together with the Rev. Temukisa has continued to ensure that we are actively meeting our goal. The lay members of the worship team are grateful to the Rev. Temukisa for her ready input and support in this ministry’s role.

We have been blessed with a number of retired ministers in the linked congregations who have regularly lead worship services. However, one is helping elsewhere, and others wish to wind back their involvement in regularly leading worship, although in some instances they still are part of a lay team. As far as Drysdale is concerned this has seen lay teams and the minister leading additional services. The worship team is very grateful to the retired ministers and members of the lay teams for their contribution in ministry. Fortnightly communal prayer has averaged about three persons with ten being the average at prayer breakfast. Both are great opportunities to have communion with our Lord. We continue to praise God for the wonderful and gifted people who so willingly give of themselves in the service of our Lord.
