CARELETTERJUNE2016

From the Pastors’ Desk19 Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hebrews 10:19-25

Dear friends,Summer is a great time of the year. With it comes loads of new opportunities for families and individuals. There

are lots of summer options for kid’s sports, there are family vacations to take, and relatives to visit. We’ve even got a couple of fun holidays coming up with Memorial Day and the 4th of July. Also during the summer, we can look forward to cookouts, picnics, fresh vegetables and fireflies.

And yet the one opportunity that so many people miss during this time of the year is the opportunity to worship. There are lots of good and worthy things to do during the summer but none of them are more worthy or better for us than attending to our spiritual formation.

I am hip to the fact that folks will be away for activities during these Summer Sundays, what I would like to see, though, is that those absent are still practicing their faith in thought, word, and deed. We need Jesus year round, not just during the school year.

To help support the parish in this endeavor I would like to share what I’m calling the Parish Summer Survival Guide. Beginning in June, we will have a designated spot on our website (tripointlutheranparish.com) for those who miss worship that will have everything they need to remain connected to our worshiping communities.

Of course the best option for those who find themselves traveling on Sunday morning is to visit a church wherever you are (especially if you are staying with friends or relatives that don’t know Christ giving you a chance to invite them to hear God’s Word), second best is to listen to a service on the radio or watch one on TV. If neither of these are possibilities, then pull out your phone and go to the website. In the survival guide you will find the lessons for the week, the prayers, a cartoon, our announcements and an audio copy of the week’s sermon. These are things that can be done on the road, in a hotel room, or on the beach, so no one has an excuse for not attending to their lives of faith. Everyone will have an opportunity to put their best foot forward into the new week. Please take advantage of this.

I’d also like to take a moment and share with you a bit about what our High School youth will be doing this summer. You, hopefully, will notice flocks of flamingos around our communities that will be moving from house to house. This is a fundraiser for our High School Youth’s activities fund. A portion of which will go to help support a couple of our youth traveling to the Synod’s mission trip to Kansas City this month. I ask that you open your yard, your hearts, and your prayers as this project takes place. Please find more information about this fundraiser in the newsletter.

Have a blessed June!

Pr. James

St. John’s News

Congratulations to Jessica Roit who accepted the opportunity to serve for one year as a Young Adult in Global Mission (YAGM) volunteer in Senegal, Africa starting in August 2016. She will be one of more than 85 young adults serving on behalf of the ELCA in 11 different country programs around the world!

The ELCA’s Young Adults in Global Mission program provides young adults, ages 21-29, the opportunity to grow in their faith and work hand-in-hand with our global companions. Young adults in the program serve in churches, schools, and social service ministries. Currently the program is

engaged in work in Argentina/Uruguay, Australia, Cambodia, Central Europe (Hungary), Jerusalem/West Bank, Madagascar, Mexico, Rwanda, Senegal, Southern Africa and the United Kingdom.

The total cost for one young adult in the program for a year is $13,000. The ELCA contributes $9,000 in support per volunteer. Each young adult needs to raise a minimum of $4,000 to help support their year of service and YAGM programs within the country. If more than $4,000 in gifts is received, the additional funds will be set aside for future expansion of the Young Adults in Global Mission programs.

How can you help? Please pray for all of the young adults who have committed to serve abroad for a year. May God grant them peace as they begin their journey of service. Also, please consider helping Jessica reach her goal of raising $4,000 by supporting her with a financial donation.

ELCA invites members to consider future priorities and

directionsCHICAGO (ELCA) – In anticipation of the 500th

anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has introduced “Called Forward Together in Christ,” an initiative that invites its 3.7 million members to consider what kind of church God is calling the ELCA to become.

Led by ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton and endorsed by the ELCA Church Council and in collaboration with the ELCA Conference of Bishops, the initiative asks members to join in a conversation about the future priorities of the ELCA.

“We’re asking all of us to think together and to talk together about what our priorities are going to be so we can be as effective as possible in bringing people the good news of Jesus Christ,” said Eaton in a video message.

The initiative has three main phases: Conversations across the church about the future Consultations on the directions and priorities that

emerge Decisions as a church about where the ELCA is headed

“We need you to be involved in the conversation,” said Eaton, emphasizing the importance for all members to participate. “The more of us we can hear from, the more of us who are praying and listening to the Spirit, the more possible it will be for us to get a clearer picture and understanding of the future God is calling this church to.”

Questions for congregations to consider include: What are your hopes for the future of this church? Who would you like to see joining your congregation, and how might this happen? What are the two biggest challenges facing your congregation right now?

Following this process, a statement of future directions and priorities will be considered by the ELCA Church Council at its November 2016 meeting. The goal is to launch the statement in 2017 as part of the ELCA’s observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

Information is available at www.ELCA.org/future.

Plans for new Lutheran Campus Ministry Moving Forward

From the Lincoln Journal StarThe Nebraska Lutheran Campus Ministry wants to

tear down its current home at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and build a new one.

The ministry wants to demolish the Lutheran Center building at 535 N. 16th St. and build a new two- or three-story building and chapel in its place. Pastor Adam White said utilities and other aspects of the current Lutheran Center, opened in 1951, are often in need of repair. “This building has endured the cheapest possible fix for six decades,” he said.

The ministry also wants to include a dozen housing units in the new building to provide the center with a dependable source of revenue, he said. “We really see an opportunity to expand our ministry,” he said. The city’s Historic Preservation Commission voted Thursday to recommend the city-county Planning Commission approve a special permit for the project. It calls for construction of a two- or three-story main building that would be built adjacent to a chapel. Bruce Fischer, an associate professor of construction management at UNL and adviser to the ministry on the project, said the building’s size likely would be determined based on fundraising. The ministry has raised about 40 percent of the $6 million it needs for the project. For more information on fundraising, visit www.lutherancenterunl.com.

The two-story version would have administrative offices and a lounge on the first floor of the main building, with a dozen housing units and a living room on the second floor. A pantry that the Lutheran Center administers for UNL also would be on the first floor. Upper floors would be set back further than the first floor.

The main building also would have three garages for staff and landscaping supplies on the north side, with a private entrance to the pantry. A basement would have a commercial kitchen and dining area. “I do think this fits

quite well,” said Jim Johnson, a member of the Historic Preservation Commission.

The Lutheran Center sits in the heart of Greek Row between Pi Kappa Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon.

The ministry plans to construct the building in 2018 and move into it the next year. “I like the idea of having housing focused on faith and service,” White said.

The Flamingo Fundraiser will be operating at least through the month of June with the purpose of raising funds for the high school youth’s activities fund.

This fund is important to the faith formation of our kids as it helps pay for things like:

1. The National Youth Gathering (Next one will be in Houston Texas in 2018)

2. Summer Camp (coming up this month and in July)

3. Youth Trips4. Mission Trips (coming up this month!)

How it works:This fundraiser relies heavily on the generosity and humor of our congregation members. There are three possible ways to participate.

Flamingo Insurance: For $15.00 you may buy insurance so that your yard is not flocked by flamingos.Random Chance: All church members without insurance may expect their yard to be flocked. For $20.00 the flock

may be persuaded to move along.Special Delivery: For $25.00 you may send the birds to a house of your choice!

Benefits of the fundraiser:1. It’s fun for the whole congregation.2. It gives the youth a stake in their faith formation.3. It raises awareness of the church in our communities.

JOYS AND CONCERNS ACROSS THE PARISH

Pastor Becky remarked on the well-attended graduation and confirmation dinner at Prince of Peace on April 27th. Gaylord and Ruth enjoyed Tim Stacy filling in for worship at St. John’s while the pastors were on vacation in early April. Board members expressed excitement for the upcoming Confirmation Sunday service on May 1st at Prince of Peace.

Clark moved and Ruth seconded to approve the minutes of the February board meeting.

SCHEDULED BUSINESS

Page 12: Web viewC. A. R. E. L. E. T. T. E. R. JUNE. 2016. TRI POINT . LUTHERAN PARISH. St. John’s Lutheran Church. PO Box 188. Ohiowa, NE 68416. 402.295.2324. First Evangelical

Summer Plans: Discussion began on the scheduling of joint services, such as the Lakeside Service in August. This service was scheduled for August 21st at 10:30 a.m. with an alternate date of the 14th if complications arise. With this decided, discussion turned toward the idea of having more joint services throughout the summer, but several board members stated that this would have the adverse effect of decreasing attendance due to travel as well as lowering the offering amount. Board members were asked to consider other ways to increase attendance during summer months.

Vacation Bible School: VBS would take place at Prince of Peace in the mornings from June 6th through June 8th with the theme of “Jesus Our Superhero”. Pastor Becky expected around 150 children, and stated that the church’s Thrivent Choice dollars would be used for snacks. VBS at First was scheduled for evenings during the week of July 18th.

Camp Schedule / High School Mission Trip: Pastor Becky noted that there would be four children from Prince of Peace who would be going to confirmation camp this year after missing out on it the previous year. At the confirmation and graduation dinner, some seniors noted that this camp was a very memorable event in their youth.Pastor Becky also shared that there was some interest amongst Prince of Peace children in a high school youth mission trip. It was noted that the Nebraska Synod’s trip would be going to Kansas City this year with a cost of $425.00 per child. The board agreed that each congregation should promote this trip to high school youth across the parish and check for interest.

OLD BUSINESS

Parish Bookkeeping: Joseph stated that First Lutheran treasurer Pam Norquest would be working with him on April 29th to show him the PayWindow payroll system. This would allow for the parish administrative secretary payroll to be fully transferred from the Prince of Peace treasurer’s duties to Joseph. It was decided that Joseph would use the

24th of each month as his date of pay, and that Nancy would approve his hours worked and sign checks as oversight on the payroll. It was also decided that Joseph would present an overview of the parish’s finances at each board meeting to ensure that expenses were being properly paid by all churches.Printing and copying across the parish was also discussed. The four-year contract on Prince of Peace’s Sharp copier ended in April; with so many of the parish’s copies being made with this machine, it was wondered if there would need to be a new setup for this copier. The issue was to be discussed at the next Prince of Peace council meeting, and Joseph would charge the suggested rate of $0.05 per printed page to each church to cover copying costs.

NEW BUSINESS

Parish Administrative Secretary Evaluations: The board agreed that since Joseph primarily deals with the pastors, they should be the people most responsible for his evaluation. Pastor Becky approved of the work Joseph had been doing so far and endorsed the $1.00 wage raise that was budgeted by each congregation at the start of the year. The board discussed a larger raise, but decided to stick with what was budgeted and save this topic for the 2017 budget discussions. Clark moved and Gaylord seconded that the parish administrative secretary’s hourly wage be increased by $1.00 to $12.00, effective as of May 1st, 2016. The motion was carried.

Scheduling of August Meeting : The August meeting of the Tri Point Lutheran Parish board was scheduled for August 4th at 7:00 p.m. Items to be on the agenda included staff evaluations, Lakeside Service duties, and beginning budget discussion.

With no further business, the board closed with the Lord’s Prayer and the meeting adjourned at 7:57 p.m.

A priest and a nun are on their way back home from a trip when their car breaks down. They are unable to get it fixed, so they decide to spend the night in a hotel. The only hotel in the town has only one room available.Priest: Sister, I don’t think the Lord would have a problem, under the circumstances, if we spent the night together in this one room. I’ll sleep on the lounge and you have the bed.Nun: I think that would be okay. They prepare for bed and each one takes their agreed place in the room. Ten minutes later . . . Nun: Father, I’m terribly cold.Priest: Okay, I’ll get you a blanket. (He does)Ten minutes later . . . Nun: Father, I’m still terribly cold.Priest: Okay Sister, I’ll get you another blanket. (He does)Ten minutes later . . . Nun: Father, I’m still terribly cold. I don’t think the Lord would mind if we acted as man and wife just for this one night.Priest: You’re probably right . . . get up and get your own blanket.

A farmer named Muldoon lived alone in the Nebraska countryside except for a pet dog he’d had for a long time. The dog died and Muldoon went to the community pastor, saying “Reverend, my dog is dead. Could you possibly have a funeral service for him?”The pastor told the farmer, “No, we can’t have services for an animal in the church, but I’ll tell you what, there’s a new denomination down the road apiece, and no telling what they believe in, but maybe they’ll do something for the animal.”Muldoon said, “I’ll go right now. By the way, do you think $50,000 is enough to donate for the service?”The pastor replied, “Why didn’t you tell me that dog was Lutheran?”
