Opportunities and Encouragement
Simply earning a degree wouldn’t have been enough for Victoria Kurtenbach. From the very outset, she wanted to do more, experience more, get involved, go abroad, and try out various sectors. She says she is still thrilled by the number of doors that Bucerius opened for her. “I spent my trimester abroad at the Sciences Po in Paris. Thanks to the internship listings at Bucerius, I spent several weeks at the Hamburg State I traveled to Hong Kong and Vienna to take part in moot courts and also led the Amnesty group at the law school. I am now involved with the Bucerius Law Clinic, a charitable legal advice service.”How does she manage to combine all this with the demands of her Law degree? “I think that the intense nature of the program helps people achieve a lot,” explains Kurtenbach. “Everyone is motivated here. Everyone really wants to study Law and get involved, which really binds us together. We spur each other on to harness our potential.”

“We really do demand a lot of our students,” says Matthias Jacobs. “But we also offer them unparalleled support in ways that other law schools cannot.” From an ideal student-teacher ratio, specialized study groups and coachings to the “Exams Clinic” and tailored preparation for the First German State Examination, Bucerius provides students with a particularly structured work environment. Every question gets a swift naturally from the lectures. “Because of the personal relationships with my students, no one is allowed to slip through the cracks,” says Jacobs. “And the relationships are from my students.”

She travels around the world every day – without leaving campus. For students, Annalena Galle is “Ms. Can-Do,” who helps prepare them for their trimester abroad at one of over 90 partner universities around the globe. Want to improve your Spanish? The Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires would be a good place. Interested in more than just legal studies? Check out Sciences Po in Paris or Stellenbosch in South Africa. “Our assistance also includes practical things like visas, housing, academics, and places of worship. Everything!” says the enthusiastic student advisor. That goes for German students abroad as well as for the international exchange students who come to Bucerius from all over the world. And “everything” also includes tips about the coolest clubs in Kraków, the best hiking trails in California and the hottest shopping spots in Singapore.
“Office hours for student consultations aren’t at set times – they happen whenever a student stops in. ‘I’m not the right person to speak to about that’ is a sentence you will never hear from my team.” ANNALENA GALLE,

“For me, Law and Business is the perfect subject combination,” says Christina Haag, a Business Administration graduate. She explains that she spent a lot of time dealing with tax and employment law issues at her last job at Lufthansa. “I often felt that there was a need for a kind of translation between the lawyers’ recommendations and the business considerations of the executives.” The 27-year-old is enrolled in the one-year Bucerius Master of Law and Business (LL.M/MLB) program. “The interdisciplinary curriculum in English is structured in such a way that you’re always studying subjects from both disciplines alongside each other, which works really well. I also love the fact that the program has such a strong international focus,” says Haag. “My fellow students come from 16 different countries, which means that I’ve picked up whole new ways of looking at things.”
“In my opinion, the international nature of the program is one of the key benefits. The exchange is invaluable and the network truly global.”

“As a university created by a foundation, social engagement is in Bucerius Law School’s DNA,” says Michael Göring. “And this is something we would like to pass on to our students and graduates.” Education and a career are not ends in themselves, but a commitment to give back to the community and affect positive change. “Together we can accomplish great things,” Göring says. “Well-trained lawyers are in the best position to do this because they are needed in critical functions everywhere.”

“At a public university, it probably never would have occurred to me to do a doctorate,” says Dr. Martin Hejma, 32. At Bucerius, however, the idea springs to mind a lot more quickly: “It is much easier to speak to potential supervisors, as students are already in close contact with tutors during their degree.” The feeling of not being alone made all the difference for Dr. Hejma, who is now a judge. He was able to quickly and easily make appointments with the supervisor of his dissertation on employment law, and there were (and still are) plenty of opportunities to get in contact with other doctoral candidates.
And there is a lot of interaction with other doctoral candidates. Currently, there are 230 of them and 279 postdocs at Bucerius as well Habilitanden, postdoctoral candidates who do additional work in order to become 5 education system, and seven individuals
who have completed this process. With 29 professors, two legal institutes and three research institutes, the university offers a variety of possibilities for young academics. Bucerius’ partner, the world-renowned Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law, regularly accepts a number of Bucerius graduates to their doctoral program.
The Hengeler Mueller Library, with enough space to comfortably seat 560, is an example of how Bucerius supports its young academics. The facade of the luminous new building clearly symbolizes its role on campus: The colorful glass panels are reminiscent of rows of books. The library is open seven days a week, 24 hours a day for night owls and students on a deadline. And on the off-chance ::~amidst the approximately 110,000 volumes, a team of librarians is always on hand to assist.

Partying in the red-light district around the Reeperbahn can mean late nights as bars in Hamburg have no curfew.
“Hamburg, my pearl” is the local pop anthem of the Hanseatic city that Bucerius Law School calls home. There is much to discover here including the Alster lake, the harbor, numerous museums and theaters, an opera house, concert halls, cinemas, clubs – and more than 100 parks.
Elegant shopping streets and small boutiques, dive bars and hip cafés – Hamburg offers something for everyone.
Around 13,000 ships pass through Europe’s second largest port annually. This “water ballet” can be observed while lounging at one of the many Elbe river beach clubs or strolling on the historical Landungsbrücken promenade.

When Melina picnics in Paris’s artistic quarter, Montmartre, Jana poses on the beach in Hawaii, and Constantin posts from the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, it can only mean one thing: the seventh trimester is again upon us – and it offers occasional moments of relaxation as well as time for sightseeing. Every Bucerius student studies abroad: and not just anywhere but at one of over 90 renowned, long-term partner universities in more than 30 countries around the world. At the same time, some 100 exchange students come to Hamburg for a trimester at Bucerius and more than 40 come each year to take part in the Master’s Program. At Bucerius, the students have the opportunity not only to perfect their English but also to take up French, Spanish, Russian, or even Chinese. Language facilitates cultural exchange that is just as valuable as the long-lasting friendships and contacts that it creates.

It features alumni from diverse professional areas, like myself. I gave a presentation on my work as a state prosecutor because it’s important to have representation from various legal branches.
Cathrin: The more graduates there are, the more important the Association becomes as a network. Nowadays we can still rely on our personal contacts to other alumni. Lars: I think the “motion detector” column in the alumni newsletter is fantastic – short status updates from other members, like who’s working where? Claudio: What current students can already look forward to now is the annual alumni dinner. A festive reunion with old university friends. Lars: In a tux, if you have one! Claudio: Students don’t have any inhibitions about asking alumni for advice, even if they don’t really know them very well. They’ve studied here – and that’s enough. That people have such a connection to Bucerius – not only during their studies but after graduation as well – is extraordinary. Cathrin: Bucerius students simply have a special kind of enthusiasm. Lars: You could call it typical Bucerius Spirit – a feeling that carries over into the professional arena, one that the alumni would like to pass on. Out of the lecture hall, into their running shoes and off they go around the nearby Alster lake. Lockers – every student has one – hold not only books but sneakers and shorts to make these spontaneous runs possible. A gym and showers are available on campus from 6 am til midnight. And on top of that, there’s also the obligatory foosball table which is in constant use during lunch hours.

The rowing club is an institution at Bucerius whose oars have been baptized in the Thames. On land, student athletes compete in men and women’s soccer matches, basketball, volleyball, cycling, climbing, golf and even cheerleading.
The numerous groups unite Bucerius students of all years and interests and offer a welcome break from their studies. And once a year, the Sports Festival brings students from all over Germany and Europe to Bucerius for friendly competition in Hamburg.

WHY GERD BUCERIUS’ VIS ION IS
BECOMING INCREASINGLY REAL
Tackle Challenges and Instigate Change
He had his sights set on the big picture, but often start small: the opportunity to test oneself, take responsibility for one´s actions and support others. Gerd Bucerius lived that way himself, both at the beginning of his career as a young lawyer and judge, and 0publisher of DIE ZEIT, Germany’s most respected weekly newspaper. Bucerius Law School is committed to the ideals of its eponym, namely to give young people these opportunities. Around 100 undergraduate and graduate students take part in the “Jump

More than 40 students in the “Law Clinic” provide legal counsel for socially disadvantaged individuals at the local Diakonisches Werk, the social service arm of the Protestant church. And these are just two small examples of the big contributions Bucerius students are making. Gerd Bucerius’ guiding principles continue to bear fruit. Everyone who studies or works at Bucerius Law School is united by the feeling of being part of something bigger and is thrilled at the thought of making Gerd Bucerius’ vision come to life.
