In the welcome and opening greeting by Mr. Jost Gaertner, Managing Partner at AluMag, the lightweight battle between aluminium, magnesium, composites and high strength steel has been pointed out. The speaker list on the first day included Mr. Thomas Heuer, Head of Technology Development [in behalf of Arne Lakeit] at Audi who made the opening keynote. His lecture was focused on New Materials and Advanced Processes, flanked by modular systems and challenging joining technologies.

Other topics covered on the first day were Lightweight market trends and outlook in China & worldwide, International foundry challenges, Development of PCM, Lightweight technology selection based on a material and process benchmark and Lightweight design Challenges in development process by Dr. Markus Hermle, Manager CAE at Daimler.

Dr. Achim Agostini, Head of Division Lightweight Solutions at ThyssenKrupp System Engineering made the closing keynote of the first day with the topic Process & Equipment parts production for aluminium magnesium composites steel hybrid material. An evening reception at the Hilton Hotel ended the first informative day of the Symposium.

The high standard of the lectures continued the second day with presentations by Dr. Wolfgang Zitz Vice President at Magna Steyr Fahrzeugtechnik and Dr. Claudio Mus, President at Rheinfelden Alloys among others.

Topics covered during the second day were Site selection in Mexico, Cost comparison of different lightweight materials, Lightweight body solutions, Competitive development based on lightweight & cost balance & Design approach & process Methodologies: How to improve aluminium alloys advantages in high performance components.
