program can enhance students’ success. Include a discussion about program and student
objectives. (PowerPoint Slides 4 and 5)
List and discuss the elements to be included when designing a daily schedule that will
allow for efficient management of available time. Explain how important it is to be
realistic, to use the class schedule as a basis, and to have a written schedule in a
notebook, in a planner, or on a calendar. (PowerPoint Slide 6)
Learning Objective 2. Use your understanding of learning styles to increase your rate of
learning and retention.
Discuss the three major learning styles, the self-assessment test, and how to apply
knowledge of these styles to improve student performance. (PowerPoint Slides 7 and 8)
Learning Objective 3. Apply critical thinking skills in decision making and problem solving.
List the words used to describe the way good critical thinkers think. (PowerPoint Slide

questions and accepting coaching from others. In addition, encourage practice applying
the skills using the “Think About It” boxes and “Apply the Concepts” section in each
chapter. (PowerPoint Slide 11)
Learning Objective 4. Incorporate all of the components of classroom instruction when learning
new information.
Define the purpose for lectures including clarification of reading assignments, identifying
important points, assisting students to find relationships, and providing them with
opportunities to ask questions. (PowerPoint Slide 12)
Discuss how to effectively participate in classroom lectures, including preparing in
advance, how to be a good listener, and how to take and organize notes. (PowerPoint
Slides 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16)
Review in detail the guidelines presented in the text for studying. Include the importance
of getting proper rest and nutrition. (PowerPoint Slides 17 and 18)
Explain the importance of computer-assisted instruction as a component of nursing
education. Tell students that assignments may be required and will necessitate working
independently. (PowerPoint Slide 19)
Review audiovisual instruction methods, how they extend the classroom, and the
necessity of taking notes because these methods provide important information and are
not meant to be entertainment. (PowerPoint Slide 20)
Explain the survey-question-read-recite-review (SQR3) method of reading. Discuss how
it can help with learning and retention. (PowerPoint Slide 21)
Describe the five steps involved in completing a written assignment. Provide a simple
example to illustrate the process such as “Today’s Weather.” Collect material regarding
temperature, humidity, and appearance. Organize and outline the material. State the
purpose in an introduction, provide all your information in the body, and come to a
conclusion about today’s weather. Write a first draft, revise it, and write a final draft.
Proofread. (PowerPoint Slides 22 and 23)
Learning Objective 5. Organize your notes and notebooks according to subjects and dates.
Discuss various ways in which students can keep their notes organized for easy review of
information. (PowerPoint Slide 16)
Learning Objective 6. Use reference sources to locate needed information.
Identify and discuss various reference sources, including books, magazines, journals,

strategies for taking tests. (PowerPoint Slides 30 and 31)
Describe standardized examinations and how students can prepare for them.
(PowerPoint Slides 32 and 33)
Learning Objective 8. Explain the relationship between classroom and clinical instruction.
Discuss a typical clinical day and how the clinical experience gives students a chance to
practice what is being learned in the classroom and the nursing lab when providing actual
patient care. Stress that what they do in clinical will help them retain what they are
learning in the classroom. (PowerPoint Slide 34)
