Stepping Stones Baby Caleb stretched his little legs, stepping carefully onto each stone leading to the door, troubled whenever his tiny foot slipped into the dirt. My thoughts drifted to the many Bible verses about pathways. So, without explaining, at separate times, I asked Jeremiah, John Daniel, and Emma Kathryn to walk from the driveway to the house. In their innocence, without distraction, all chose to walk the stones, a narrow pathway. I believe this is by God’s design. The world is huge and dark, but boundaries establish a realm of focused direction and safety. And though children will test their limits, and ours, research indicates that they want boundaries and that they thrive when these are well managed. And as big people, when we stop and think about God’s specific instructions for our lives and the consequences when we, or others, overstep those boundaries, we recognize that obedience to His Commands, results in our happiness and the happiness of others. And so as we walk the stones of life carefully, recognizing that little feet, little hearts, and little minds are following closely, let’s pray, Father, please order our children’s steps according to Your Word (Ps. 119:133). May they always trust in You, not leaning on their own understanding, acknowledging You in all their ways, knowing that You will make their paths straight (Prov. 3:5). Whether they turn to the left or to the right, may our children and grandchildren hear Your Voice clearly speaking, “This is the way, walk in it” (Is. 30:21).

Stepping Stones
