Stanley St road configuration

Stanley St did not originally run all the way down to Whitechapel, and with reference to maps appears to have been reconfigured between 1885 and 1888. This changed the form of the block Kansas Bldgs are currently in and may also be the dates of actual construction. Goads Fire Insurance Plan of 1888 shows the new layout.

The reconfiguration sees the following removed:

John West Foods Ltd

The original company was founded by T. L. Pelling and C. H. Stanley, who created Pelling Stanley and Company in 1857 (these are listed at 52 Stanley St from 1899). The company soon specialized in importing canned food, which at the time was a novel product. By 1879, they were importing canned salmon from the John West company in Oregon, USA.

Pelling Stanley & Co purchased the rights to use the John West name in 1888. The first shipments of John West Salmon appeared in 1892.

By 1924, the three companies, operating separately, were all associated with Unilever:

By 1964, Unilever had merged the three into one company, John West Foods. Branches were expanded to Australia and Africa in 1974.

In 1997, Heinz acquired the brand and the majority of the John West Food company operations, excluding those in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa which continued to be part of Unilever.[3] In March 2006, Heinz sold its European Seafoods business to French-based MW Brands, itself owned by Lehman Brothers banking group, for EUR 425 million.

In 2010, Thailand-based seafood processing company Thai Union Group bought MWBrands, resultantly becoming the world's largest canned-tuna producer.

The History of the Company

We were founded in Liverpool in 1861 by two local merchants, T L Pelling and C H Stanley, who gave the company its original name - Pelling Stanley and Company.

The partners soon recognised the potential of canned food, particularly salmon, as an ideal food for workers in the industrial North of Britain and were the first to ship salmon from America to the United Kingdom in 1871.

Details on the origins of the name John West are somewhat obscure but it is known that John West was a Scotsman, probably from Linlithgow. Around the turn of the century, two other companies were founded, which were also to become the current John West Foods - Angus Watson and Co. which introduced kippers in the early 1900's and R B Green and Co.

By 1924, the three companies, operating separately, were all associated with Unilever, through shares owned by the first Lord Leverhulme.

However, they were not completely merged until 1961, and the company name of John West Foods did not appear until 1964.

Branches of the company were established overseas, in Australia in 1969 and Africa in 1974, whilst an export network was established which now trades with more than 60 countries. John West Foods

was acquired by H J Heinz in 1997, one of the world's largest grocery companies and is able to draw on the vast pool of knowledge and expertise which the Heinz network can provide. This ensures that we keep abreast of the latest developments in food technology. The introduction of products such as fish in sauces, All Day Light Meals, Lunch Kits and Value Added Tuna products are good examples of this innovation.

We have been selling Tuna since 1927 but the first John West canned Tuna appeared in the U.K. in 1952, laying the foundations for today's buoyant £155 million market, within which we have consistently been the market leader.

Special Resolution of PELLING STANLEY &CO. Limited.

AT an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members of the said Company, duly convened, and held at 52, Stanley-street, Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, on the first day of September, 1924, the following Special Resolutions were duly passed; and at a subsequent Extraordinary General Meeting of the Members of the said Company, also duly convened, and held at the same place, on the sixteenth day^ of September, 1924, the following Special Resolutions were duly confirmed:-

1. That it is desirable to reconstruct the Company, and accordingly that the Company be wound up voluntarily, and that Mr. William Henry Parry, of 8, Cook-street, Liverpool aforesaid, Chartered Accountant, be hereby appointed Liquidatorfor the purpose of such winding-up.

2. That the said Liquidator be and he is herebyauthorised to consent to the registration of a NewCompany to be named Pelling Stanley & Co.Limited, with a Memorandum and Articles ofAssociation which have already been prepared withthe privity and approval of. the Directors of theCompany.
