Situation Report - Nebraska Tornadoes

Presbyterian Disaster is responding to the rare double tornadoes that struck Pilger, Nebraska on June 16, 2014. The tornadoes that hit Pilger and heavily damaged or destroyed 75 percent of the town were part of a storm system that went through Nebraska, Iowa and Minnesota.

Significant flooding continued across portions of Minnesota, northern Iowa and southeast South Dakota. PDA has been in contact with mid-councils who were experiencing flooding.

National Response Team members were invited by the Homestead Presbytery, and two team members served for four days, offering assistance to the presbytery and the leadership of local Presbyterian congregations. Communities are working together on an immediate response, and in the absence of a FEMA declaration, may need assist in any long-term recovery efforts.

Rev. Charity Potter, pastor of Wakefield Presbyterian Church, another community affected by the storms, has been working with a group of churches that is coordinating meals for local volunteers, electric power workers, and survivors, as well as assisting with shelter and clothing.

Please continue to pray for families affected by the tornadoes and storms. Pray that through the response of the faith community, the faithful hope that is found in Christ will be evident.

The Board of Deacons continues to collect canned goods and non-perishable food items for the Safety Net in Scranton. These items may be brought in at any time and

According to an Arabian proverb, “A friend is one to whom one may pour out all the contents of one’s heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that the gentlest of hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.” That’s why it’s so important to have Christian friends. We can share the good and bad, confident that our friends won’t judge us as a result. Instead, true friends celebrate our successes and encourage us during disappointments. As the Bible says, “A friend loves at all times”

(Proverbs 17:17, NRSV)’

A father was reading Bible stories to his young son. “The man named Lot was warned to take his wife and flee out of the city,” he said, “but his wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.”

The boy asked, “What happened to the flea?” Monday thru Friday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Church Office: 570-343-6807 Pastor Forbes: 570-344-

Dr. Sharon Telban will lead us worship on Sunday, July 20th.

Declaration Of Interdependence Let it be declared, announced and hereby celebrated … • That all people everywhere are dependent upon one another. • That everyone needs everyone else for freedom, life, love and happiness. • That all things in the natural order are dependent upon everything else. • That our little planet and all the planets and stars in the solar systems are in a state of mutual dependence upon one another. • That this universally shared dependence comes from God and is of God. • And that each individual part of this relationship has its own part to

play — its own destiny to fulfill in God’s plan.

Imagine yourself sent away from the safety of your home into a new area whether it be urban or rural. Imagine yourself entering that strange area with no money and no luggage. Let’s say you walk up to a stranger’s door, knock, and tell that person at the door: “I bring you peace.” Imagine expecting that stranger to welcome you, feed and clothe you and listen to your views on religion. Talk about being “like lambs among wolves.”

But in Luke’s Gospel, chapter 10: 1-12 about 70 people were called to live by Jesus’ example by Jesus himself. They were called to share the word of God by stepping out in faith. They were called to make themselves vulnerable in the world in order to show the potent healing power of God.

Our challenges as Christians are no less vigorous today. Our lives as people of God are dependent on how we live out God’s teachings in a sometimes hostile world.

I know of two women who attended the same church, neither of whom have spoken favorable to or about the other for over 15 years. Finally, one walked up to the other after service on Sunday and took her enemy’s hand. “I don’t know why we are enemies,” she said to the astonished woman, “But if I have done anything to offend you or to hurt you, I beg you to forgive me in the name of our Lord.”

I have seen and experienced many encounters between people, but that was one of the bravest acts I have ever witnessed. As brothers and sisters forgiven by God’s grace in Christ, we should do no less than strive to live in harmony with one another, sharing the gospel story as we go on in life.

God, just order our hearts and mindsto seek justice and wholeness for allpeople – enemies and friends-so that

we and all your children may find peace.

In Peace and joy,

Pastor Ken
