Healthy Ageing
ANNUAL REPORT 2011 - 2012
From the President’s DESK
Mr. Mathew Cherian, Chief Executive, HelpAge India, is given a traditional welcome by 60 plus Thangam Ranganayagi, an elderly resident at the Tamaraikulam Elders Village in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu (TN).
CEO at the age 30, Mathew Cherian is a man who
believes he will never retire from social work. He plays
the guitar, loves reading, a first look at this unassuming
man, doesn’t strike you as a passionate & demanding
CEO of an organization. But look closer and there is
much to discover, learn and most of all imbibe.
With tremendous patience, drive and a passion to help
those disadvantaged in society, Mathew Cherian is the
force behind HelpAge India.
“Everyday as I go to work, I see so many elderly
begging at the traffic lights, sleeping on pavements
with tattered clothing, but the worst of all is the look in
their eyes, one of ‘dying hope’ and it drives me to work
harder. Whether one accepts it or not, we all are going
to get old one day,” says Cherian.
A BITS Pilani (Rajasthan), product with a B.E.
(Honours) degree in Civil Engineering, Mathew was
well qualified for a cushioned corporate career. He was
only 22, when suddenly one day reality of a different
kind hit him and changed his life path forever.
“I was working for an American oil drilling company in
Mumbai, close to Nariman Point. It was a routine job
which paid well. One day as I got out of work, I saw a
bunch of street kids shuffling through the garbage, and
eating whatever leftover food they could find. I gave
them some money at the time, but as I went home I
couldn’t get that image out of my head, here I was
having a fancy lunch each day at work and right outside
my office they were these kids looking for food at a
garbage dump. This set me thinking.”
So he with his close friend late Sanjoy Ghose, decided
to visit the more poverty stricken tribal villages on the
outskirts of Mumbai.
“For me the place was a revelation, I had seen villages
in Kerala but had never witnessed such abject poverty
and backwardness. The village had no healthcare, no
education. People were living in complete filth and
dirt,” says Cherian.
He went on do some more volunteering with other
social workers like Baba Amte, working in rural areas.
Then IRMA, Institute of Rural Management Anand
(Gujarat) came into being offering a PG Diploma
course, and he and Sanjoy went on to become a part of
its first batch of students.
His journey then took him to Nagpur in1987 to head the
Oxfam branch there, to look after their Maharashtra leg
of work, after which he was transferred to Delhi, and
then went on to work for Plan International as their
South Asia Representative from 1995 to 1998. Later, he
set up CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) in India,
primarily to fundraise for local NGOs.
he operations of HelpAge India (HI) during 2011-12 are comprehensively covered by the report of the Governing Body and Audited
Accounts. In addition, I am pleased to take the opportunity of addressing the Hl Community - the donors, the Government, the employees and everyone who has helped or even thought of helping.
In the 34 years of HI's existence, the enormous changes all around us are reflected in the needs of the beneficiaries of HI's work and thus in the nature of the work itself. India is a young country with the average age of its population at 35 or less.
At the other end of the spectrum, the elderly are lonelier, isolated, neglected, actively discriminated against or “merely” forgotten or ignored. And the numbers are huge – 100 million soon. More than ever, they long for a life with care, company, dignity, independence and respect. To counter these influences and their obviously harmful consequences, HI has successfully commenced initiatives which over a period, change attitudes. SAVE, a programme with schools, aims to sensitize children both to the need to help the needy elderly and the many benefits of mixing freely with them to gain the immense advantage from their company, wisdom, knowledge, care, warmth and love.
To encourage older people to help themselves, HI has successfully started Elders Self-Help-Groups in a number of States. This programme demonstrates such apparent benefits that several States have expressed appreciation and provided support. Efforts continue in order to create awareness among the elderly to learn about and claim their rightful dues under Government programmes. In addition to the new initiatives to bring about long term changes in attitudes towards the elderly, HI continues with its well known “normal” activities of providing mobile medical care, supporting cataract operations, disbursing financial help, running physiotherapy centers and a few homes for the elderly. The Government of India recognizes and supports HI's work and considers it as a partner in alleviating the life of elders in their evening years.
The environment for charitable organizations, particularly those well organized and run such as HI, is an increasingly difficult one. Donations from international agencies are virtually at a standstill, domestically there are some signs of donor fatigue and regrettably increasing cynicism and indifference, while the economic situation is not exactly conducive. These aspects need to be addressed in new ways and in a sense, all of us at HelpAge India have to become fundraisers. The tax regime is unfortunately directed to charities of a different character but we make continuing efforts to demonstrate the need for relief for good, honest work.
My thanks and deep appreciation to the donors, the Government and many other friends of HI and particularly its devoted, loyal and untiring staff and management. The Governing Body has provided ever helpful and positive support, for which I am grateful. I look forward with confidence to continuing our work to bring a smile to the faces of our elderly citizens.

GOVERNING BODY
From the President’s DESK
It isn’t often one gets the chance to have a heart-to-
heart chat with the CEO of one’s organization. A man
on whose shoulders lies the tremendous responsibility
of helping the disadvantaged elders of the country,
keeping transparency of the organization in mind,
keeping up the consistent efforts to sustain the good
work and be honest and accountable to all its donors.
It was a little difficult to get him to sit down and talk
about himself. But I had been working with him for the
past 8 years and was curious and determined. Finally
I convinced him that it would help me and others
understand what drives him to come to work
everyday. Maybe there was some learning in there for
all of us.

President Emeritus
Mr. M. M. Sabharwal
70 plus, Subal Prasad (left) of Hosir village, District Bokaro (Jharkhand), listens attentively to MMU doctor Dr. Gajendra Prasad Singh's medical advice at the Youth Center Hosir (MMU site).
As we grow older, the need to take care of our health becomes more and more
important to lead healthier and happier lives. Some are fortunate to have the
resources to take care of themselves in later years, but many like 70 year old Subal
have nowhere to turn too. It is for elders like him who cannot afford or access basic
healthcare, HelpAge's Mobile Medicare Units (MMUs) provide free and basic
healthcare services. Currently, HelpAge has 75 MMUs operating across the country
providing Allopathic and Ayurvedic treatment to elders like him.

A thinker, a believer & a
leader, Late P.L. Roy
more popularly known
as 'Hurricane', departed
from this world leaving
the HelpAge family with
fond memories and a
deep sense of loss.
Hurricane was intro-
duced to the HelpAge
family by Mr. M.M. Sabharwal, President Emeritus,
HelpAge India, who brought him onto the HelpAge
Governing Board. From his schooling in Doon School,
Dehradun, to his graduation from Emmanuel College,
University of Cambridge (UK) the road for Hurricane
was chartered well for the corporate sector. He went on
to hold leading posts in the sector from being the Sales
Director at Metal Box Co. India to the Managing
Director of Alfred Herbert & GEC.
A charismatic man, always willing to think out-of-the-
box, Hurricane true to his name wanted to bring about
change in society and help those who couldn't help
themselves. His meeting with Sabharwal seemed
destined to fulfill that very intrinsic need in him and he
became a major motivator in HelpAge's drive to help
the disadvantaged elderly.
Quick-witted and always with a smile on his face, he
had a great sense of humor.
He made a conscious effort to know the members of the
HelpAge family at all levels, their ideas on bringing
about a positive change in the lives of the elderly in their
regions, the ground reality, hiccups they faced in their
endeavor and their vast knowledge of elder needs. His
visit to the Tamaraikulam Elders Village in Cuddalore
(TN) and Kalyan Ashram (Kolkata) are still
remembered with great fondness by the elders residing
there and staff members.
He believed in the power of communication and its
strength to empower the cause of those disadvantaged
and left a lasting impression wherever he went.
HEALTHCARE emembering urricane R HIt was obvious that a person like him would choose a
like minded partner for life, and so he met Amita
Joseph, an equally strong willed, sensitive and driven
woman who too wanted to help the less fortunate. He
was at that time heading Oxfam, as its Country Head
in 1991 and Amita was also working in the same
organization.
“Amita and I are each others strength. We believe in
the same things and want to help those who can’t help
themselves,” says Cherian.
A father of two beautiful daughters, it’s obvious he is
the more indulgent parent of the two.
“I’m a morning person, I get up at about 5 am do my
Yoga and exercise, and by 6 am I am ready to cook
breakfast for my daughters. From Dosas to French
fries, their wish is my command,” he adds with a fond
smile. “I then drop them off to school and then head to
work.”
In 2002, Mathew joined HelpAge India heading the
Programme department, his knowledge and
experience from the field brought a fresh breath into
HelpAge’s scope of work. But it was for a short while,
as he soon left. But it wasn’t for long, for in 2004,
HelpAge wanted him back and this time at the helm of
things and so he joined as Chief Executive, HelpAge
India.
There has been no looking back since then for
Cherian. It’s been 8 years and he feels there is still
more to do, more to give.
“I understand the needs of elders, both children and
elder needs have a lot in common. I have a deep sense
of responsibility, I love what I do and I don’t think of it
as work at all. I’ve learnt a lot at HelpAge. I’ve also
understood retirement in its fullest sense. Most people
in India think of retirement as the time when they stop
working after 60. But technically keeping oneself
active even after one stops working, means one has
not retired. Mr. Sabharwal (90 plus) our President
Emeritus, is one such person who epitomizes Active
Ageing.”
Mathew Cherian, a calm, honest and humble man is
truly an inspiration for all. He left me with much to
dwell upon.

Subal could barely walk.

70 plus Subal Prasad of Jharkhand,
worked as a laborer in an explosive
factory for most of his life, till in 1995
the factory was shut down due to
heavy losses, forcing Subal along with
other workers to opt for voluntary
retirement. Soon ill-health and
weakness started taking its toll on
him. Dependent on his son, with no
job in hand and a deteriorating
medical condition, the next 6 years for
Subal were hard. He tried the local
Public Health Centre (PHC) but the
sky rocketing. Treatment began
immediately and soon Subal started
responding to it. His Sugar level came
down and he started feeling stronger .
Today, he walks confidently to the
MMU location. A regular patient of

65 plus Ramchandran was found in the compounds of Lucknow's famous Gautam Buddha Park, shriveled up and in
tattered clothing, trying to protect himself from the incessant rain. He couldn't walk. After receiving a call from a Good
Samaritan, Ms. Rashmi Mishra, from the HelpAge Lucknow Elder helpline rushed to the spot to his aid and called for the
Lucknow Mobile Medicare Unit (MMU). Ramchandran was given some immediate medication, then taken to the nearby
Trauma Centre, from where he was then referred to the nearby Mental Hospital. HelpAge lodged an FIR with the local Police
hoping to track his family down but to no avail, as all information given by Ramchandran was about a life and family that
didn't exist. He had lost his memory. The HelpAge team then bought him some clothes and took him to the Missionaries of
Charity, ‘Prem Niwas’ - Home for the Dying Destitute. Today, Ramchandran might not remember his past, but he's found
new friends, a new home and a place to call his own.

HEALTHCARE REACHSOCIAL PROTECTION
It is a rare sight to catch a person over 60 sweating it out at a Gym with all its modern equipments. An elderly woman works out hard at the Elder Gym – Fitness & Wel lness Centre at Lions Club Senior Citizen Home Campus, Amrapal l i , Chunabhatti in Bhopal (MP), HelpAge's Agecare facility in Bhopal. This Agecare facility not only provides fitness options but also physiocare services for the elderly as well.

Physiocare is essential with increasing age
in order to remain healthy and
independent. HelpAge has throughout the
country opened Physiocare Centres
through its Agecare facilities.
Loneliness, abuse, lack of awareness on rights of elders, are some of the reasons why
elders call the HelpAge Elder Helplines spread across the country in 22 locations. Over
the years the need for these Helplines has increased immensely. Sometimes the
elders just need someone to talk to, which highlights the grave problem of loneliness
among seniors in our country. Property disputes and harassment are another major
area where elders need help and legal guidance on how to tackle the problem. These
Helplines also serve as a contact point for people who want to help and often call when
they find an abandoned elderly on the streets. The HelpAge Helpline teams provide
these elders with shelter and care. In the forthcoming years more Elder Helplines will
be set up to help more such disadvantaged elders.

an emergency in the village or a
family facing mishap, the Dev Dhan

next harvest with interest.
Inspired by this concept, HelpAge
India along with the help of local
Elder Self Help Groups (ESHGs),
initiated a Grain Bank system.
To begin with, the ESHG members
brought in two fistfuls of grain from
home, which they then added to a
common pool of Grain. After

Self Sustainability Shelter & Care-giving
With each passing year the need for composite shelters and care giving facilities is on
the rise. Old Age Homes and Day Care Centres are becoming essential and there is an
increasing requirement for them. HelpAge supports these in different ways. Elders,
who have no roof over their heads and have nowhere to go, find not only a home in
these shelters but also a life away from abuse and destitution. For the urban well-to-
do elders, pay and stay home are an answer for a life away from the constant payment
of bills, property management, threat of crime and a place which is age-friendly
where they can unwind with like minded peers.
On the other hand, to take care of the needs of elders, care-giving training has become
an intrinsic part of the HelpAge programme module, where special training is given to
care-givers to take care of elders. Not to be mixed with domestic help, these care-
givers are trained solely to look after elder needs.

“Girls just didn't play sports during
my time. I remember I would come

despair,” she said.
Her memories of her husband come in
bits and pieces. When asked, she
breaks into a shy smile and said, “My
husband told me that - the first day I
met you I knew I would marry you.”
She was 25 then and it was love at first
sight for both.
Originally from Delhi, she came to

staying since then at an old age home,
where HelpAge had conducted a care-
giving training programme.

HelpAge believes that each elder has the right to basic food, water and shelter,
without resorting to begging or being dependent. A right to a dignified life. It is to
fulfill this very need that it runs the Support a Gran programme, which covers the
basic needs of primarily destitute elders. In 2011-12, HelpAge reached out to 36,042
elders across 23 states under this programme.

In line with its objective of propagating the concept of 'Active Ageing',
HelpAge India now offers a facility that will encourage an independent way
of living for senior citizens within limited means. It is addressing the needs
of those 50 plus citizens that are facing the prospect of dwindling incomes
as they approach retirement or are already retired, through its AdvantAge Card programme. Through this, it
provides its card holders access to specially discounted prices on consumer goods, leisure products and services,
super markets goods, travel portals, travel services, hospital and clinic services, pharmaceutical products,
diagnostic labs, physiotherapy facilities etc. Currently there are over 450 Associates in over 35 towns and cities.
The uniqueness of this Card Programme lies in its ability to function as an enabler at many levels. At the core of the
programme is the website www.helpageadvantage.org which in addition to helping members search online for
discounts offered by category of goods, services and cities, also effectively becomes a common 'meeting ground' for
members, enabling:
•Social networking through the website: The website will soon offer members the facility to write blogs where
they can express their views and invite comments from other members. This will enable them to form communities
of like minded elders and give them a sense of belonging.
•Volunteering for a sense of purpose: Senior citizens acquire a lifetime of experience and expertise. They can
volunteer to share their skills with other members or their families. This will provide the volunteer members a sense
of purpose, a new meaning to life post retirement.
•Advocacy for elder issues: In using the website to voice their concerns on issues affecting senior citizens,
members will discover the power of their voice. Such a platform will enable HelpAge to incorporate and reflect
member opinions in its advocacy efforts.
It’s free and valid for life!

ADVOCACY
Many elderly in India are silent sufferers simply because they aren't
aware of their rights. Lack of awareness and advocacy, are major
reasons for this. HelpAge has been working over the past few years
advocating for the cause of elders in various areas, whether it be for
prevention of Elder Abuse, implementation for the National Policy of
Older Person or access to basic rights and entitlements.
Sima Sadhukhan proudly holds a copy of the Magistrate's Order directing her 2 sons to pay Maintenance.
60 plus Sima Sadhukhan, came to HelpAge’s Kolkata office one
morning accompanied by her 55 year old neighbour Jagadish Ram in
November 2011 to ask for help in filing a case against her stepsons.
Sima was her late husband's second wife. After his death, she had
barely time to grieve, when the harassment began.
Her stepsons despite having homes of their own, wanted to oust her
out of her home. It first started with verbal abuse, then mental
torture and finally reached the point of physical threats. Soon she
was forced to live in just one room. At times she was even locked out
of her home. Subsequently, a portion of the property was sold without
her consent or signature.
It had been 5 years of constant suffering for Sima. With no source of
regular income or any other support, even a basic meal for Sima
seemed unaffordable. Her only income being an interest of Rs. 2000
per month from a post office fixed deposit.
Ram found her in this state and decided to fight for her. He went to
court but justice was taking too long and they did not have anymore
financial strength to carry on litigation. They then had heard about
the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act
(2007), but had no idea how to proceed. They went from pillar to post
but no one was willing to help.
It was then he brought her to HelpAge, and Ms. Anuradha Sen,
Deputy Director-Advocacy (East) along with other staff members,
helped submit the Maintenance application form at the SDO
Barrackpore (WB) and a case was registered & filed. Soon Sima's
children received a Notice from the SDO intimating the date of
hearing.
HelpAge ensured she received police protection during the duration
of the case and assisted the Tribunal. Finally the Tribunal passed an
order stating that both children should pay a certain amount to her
every month by money order.
Today, Sima is secure and is an inspiration to others who like her
have been silent sufferers.

Elder Abuse is a social evil which is a reality in India. In
order to better understand the underlying reasons and
consequences of this grave issue, HelpAge conducted a
research study which was released nationwide on the
eve of ‘World Elder Abuse Awareness Day’ (June 14).
HelpAge released a 9 city report on ‘Elder Abuse & Crime
in India’, which covered: Delhi NCR, Mumbai,
Hyderabad, Kolkata, Patna, Chennai, Bhopal,
Ahmedabad & Bangalore.
The study was conducted among lower income group
individuals with a sample size of 100 elderly per city (50

CORPORATE CARING •18 Corporates supported 43 MMUs. •4 Corporates funded 569 surgeries. •13 Corporates supported the cause in general.
Each year corporates, individuals, institutions, trusts and foundations humble us
with their magnanimity and kindness. In a fast paced world of cut-throat
competition they take out time and funds, to think about the less fortunate elders of
our country. They give us hope that there is still sensitivity and generosity left in this
competitive environment. HelpAge salutes their spirit and hopes they continue
holding its hands throughout this journey, to create a better and dignified life for the
disadvantaged elderly.

103 year old Gauranga Das,
was found lying curled up in a
shed of a Tailors shop near the
B h u b a n e s w a r R a i l w a y
Station Gate.
With no
food, water, clothes or a roof
over his head, he resorted to
begging . HelpAge Elder
Helpline in Bubaneshwar
(Odisha) helped provide him
shelter, food, clothing and a
life away from the streets.
He did’nt
remember his family, as he left
them in childhood.
A new life for Gauranga
