www.upperkennetnews.co.uk Four monks decided to go on a silent walking retreat. Gathering together for Morning Prayer, bags packed, walking boots on and food ready for the road, they thought they had begun rather well and entered the retreat ready to stick to being silent no matter how hard it became. After all a month in silence, even for monks, is no picnic. They set a steady sensible pace and soon left the town far behind. It was autumn and there was much to look at and savour: the last of the straw bales being moved from the fields, the tang of ripe blackberries, the sight and sound of buzzards lazily circling overhead. The four monks had settled into a companionable silence. There was no need for words. And one by one they began to experience a sense of inner quiet. Even as their feet moved across the uneven paths, and eyes watched for hidden rabbit holes and roots to trip them, their minds stilled from chatter and their hearts connected to God and opened to hear and know God’s presence. Towards the end of the day one stopped abruptly ‘I think I left the back door open!’ ‘You idiot - not only have you left the door open but you’ve BROKEN THE SILENCE’. Turning to look at them the third monk added ‘what about you - you’ve broken the silence too!’ And the fourth monk, chuckling away to himself at the foolish monks behind him said ‘Thank God! Not only did I double check the doors were locked, Brother Forgetful, but I’m the only one here who hasn’t broken the silence!’ I wonder what they did next. Did they give up on the project and go home once they had experienced apparent failure? Maybe they looked at one another, howled with laughter and realised each of them was guilty of far more than merely breaking the silence pre - occupation with the events of the past or things that cannot be changed, blaming and shaming, finger - pointing, and self -satisfied smugness for starters. Perhaps they stopped, spoke about what had happened, set it all in prayer again and pressed on, knowing that inevitably one or t’other of them would fail again further down the line. And perhaps in doing so became better at understanding that it is often out of weaknesses, failures and apparent disaster that great transformations, lasting growth and deepest love are revealed. An old prayer my Grandfather used has deep resonance for me whenever faced with an undertaking of any sort: God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. The monks couldn’t pledge a month of silence to God. The monks couldn’t change the fact that there would be lapses and failures. The monks could at that moment of failure and crossroads of decision -making make a profound choice. To pledge to undertaking that retreat in silence MOMENT BY MOMENT, and learn the art of being, in the moment, with others, with God, and that this is what truly matters. Four monks decided to go on a silent walking retreat. Gathering together for Morning Prayer, bags packed, walking boots on and food ready for the road, they thought they had begun rather well and entered the retreat ready to stick to being silent no matter how hard it became. Her very innovative (zoological?!) programme includes Gershwin ‘Walking the Dog’; Saint-Saens ‘Carnival of the Animals’; Copland ‘The Cat and the Mouse’ and Rimsky-Korsakov ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’. But also Mozart Twelve Variations on “Ah vous dirai-je,Maman”.

A concert not to be missed, not least for its entertainment value, and of course you will be supporting the professional development of a new star on the horizon. Tickets at £10 (£8 for members of the Marlborough Brandt Group and St Peter’s Trust) are available from the White Horse Bookshop and Sound Knowledge.

If so, may we earmark an hour or so of your valuable time each week to co-ordinate promotion etc. in the form of posters, leaflets, web site, and social media (where applicable) covering events at our seven churches?

We would plan to identify one person from each church to act as your liaison officer providing you with details of events, services etc. from which to design the appropriate format – the printing would be handled by the church office.

An explanation of the different types of services we have in our churches

We have been asked many times for an explanation of the very broad range of services that we offer throughout the benefice. The Upper Kennet Benefice is made up of a group of five parishes: (1) Fyfield, West Overton and East Kennett (2) Avebury (3) Winterbourne Monkton (4) Winterbourne Bassett and (5) Broad Hinton, and

within these parishes we have seven churches where services take place on a regular basis. There is also a church at Berwick Bassett which is used from time to time.

An explanation of each type of service is as follows: Prayer Book Communion, 8am (approx. 40 minutes): A simple traditional service following the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. It is clergy led and ideal for those who appreciate times of quiet reverence. There is a short sermon and there are no hymns. Holy Communion (approx. 50 minutes): Our serv ices of Holy Communion aim to be accessible to as broad a cross-section of people as possible. They use contemporary liturgy (Common Worship) together with a range of hymns. Sung Eucharist at Broad Hinton is in fact Holy Communion with a choir. We welcome all Christians of any denomination who receive the sacrament of bread and wine in their own church to receive with us. Those who are unable to do this are welcome to come to the altar for a blessing. In this service we tell the story of God with his people throughout history, and proclaim that this God, revealed to us in Jesus Christ, is real among us in the sacrament that we share. Prayer Book Matins (approx. 50 minutes): A serv ice that dates back to the time of Thomas Cranmer and may be lay or clergy led. Originally intended to be a choral service, a choir sings special responses. There are hymns, readings, prayers and a short sermon or talk. Morning Prayer (approx. 35 minutes): A serv ice that is usually lay led with bible readings, prayers and a short sermon. This service is not a Communion Service and usually has hymns.

Evensong (approx. 45 minutes): An evening serv ice based on the Book of Common Prayer with bible readings and responses, hymns, prayers and a short sermon. Evensong may be lay or clergy led and is not a Communion Service. Evening Prayer (approx. 25 minutes): A lay led serv ice mainly based on the Book of Common Prayer with prayers, responses and sometimes a short homily. Taizé service (30 minutes): A simple, uncluttered mid-week service where the emphasis is on peaceful reflection and quietness. Benefice Communion Service (approx. 55 minutes): Each month, usually on the third Sunday, we have a ‘combined churches’ service of Holy Communion at one of our churches. It includes hymns, prayers, readings and a sermon. If anyone needs transport to one of these services please contact a churchwarden. A Celtic Service of Morning Prayer (approx. 40 minutes): a service that uses the rhythmical and poetic language of the early Christian Church, including hymns, readings and a short sermon or homily, and plenty of space for reflection and quiet prayer. It is mostly lay-led. Occasionally it may change to a simple Morning Prayer format with hymns. Daily Morning and Evening Prayer in the Celtic Tradition (approx. 20 minutes): Join the Rector and a small group of regular attendees for daily prayer at St James, Avebury, at 8am and 5pm (8.30am Saturdays). We use the Daily Celtic Prayer from the Northumbria Community and follow the daily readings set by the Church of England. Anyone is welcome, either regularly or as a one-off. Other services: in addition to the above there are, periodically, children’s and family services, healing services, pet services and songs of praise services. You do not have to know your way around the structure of services in order to take part; you will be made most welcome at all our churches, and if you just want to sit and reflect and not take part that is perfectly all right. All our churches are open every day for quiet meditation or prayer or for you to just come in to enjoy the peace and tranquillity

During August, Marlborough & District Embroiderers’ Guild have been taking part in the National Stitch day to demonstrate their skills, answer questions and promote the organisation. Members have worked in four locations around Wiltshire - Calne, Marlborough, Swindon and Royal Wootten Bassett. Calne Christine Hill, Chris Cook, Diana King, Lindsay Sherwood and Linda Wells at Library in Calne Marlborough On 3 August, Audrey Peck, Rosemary

Hawes, Ann Johnson and Hazel Morris worked on the Turkey work for covering the replica 17C chairs at the Historic Merchant House in Marlborough. Swindon

On 9 August we had an enjoyable afternoon stitching, chatting

and drinking tea in Cafe Art, Old Town, Swindon. Members present were Fiona

Harpin (left), Sarah Wicks (centre) with guest Alli Royal Wootten Bassett On 13 August, Susan Pearce and Ann Kingdon spent a very pleasant couple of hours in the library at Royal Wootton Bassett doing some hand stitching. They had a small display of some of work, which attracted the attention of two ladies who sat and chatted with us for about 45 minutes. They may decide to join us at our next meeting. A couple of other ladies stopped to chat. We enjoyed the time we spent there and hope we raised awareness of the Embroiderers Guild a bit!

Church Christmas Tree Sale

Our first year Sale proved to be a huge success contributing over £2500 of profit to the church funds. The formula of pre-selling trees and the opportunity to select your own tree on the day of the Bazaar proved successful and we will continue with this approach. Trees pre-ordered will qualify for Free Local Delivery on the 3rd / 4th December. Due to demand we will include 8/9ft and 9/10ft trees in the range this year. We will supply the same premium quality Nordman tree, from the same local supplier and as all of the trees are grown in the UK we can therefore maintain the same competitive prices as last year. The project is part of the PCC initiative to raise funds by offering a service. Look out for details of the Christmas Bazaar at West Overton Church on 3rd December from 10am.

A date for your diary Christmas Bazaar and Sale of

Christmas Trees at West Overton church will be on Saturday 3rd December.

Avebury Parish Council Headlines from three Avebury Parish Council meetings in July and September Planning applications: We decided to support planning

applications for a two storey side extension, new vehicular access, garage/store and removal of trees at 2 Bray Street, a car port and store at Trusloe Farmhouse, a change of use of a granary building to provide a consulting treatment room at Manor Farm, Bray Street, and felling a dead walnut tree at Truslowe Manor, Bray Street. We decided to make no comment on an application by the National Trust for a visitor welcome sign beside the footpath from the main car park: while we hoped the sign might include text in foreign languages and a welcome from the community, neither is a material planning consideration and we therefore hope to explore other possibilities. We offered no objection to an application to fix an entrance sign to Avebury Manor garden wall.

Review of Summer Solstice 2016: We agreed the new arrangements had gone very well and decided to write to the Police, Wiltshire Council and the National Trust to thank them for mounting a very successful operation. We particularly wanted to thank Lady Scott as Leader of Wiltshire Council for the additional resources the Council had provided this year.

Transport issues: We understand that works to extend the 30 mph limit on Swindon Road will start on 28 October 2016 and that the bridge by Galteemore Farm in Beckhampton will be rebuilt between 3 – 28 October. We anticipate receiving a quotation for consultant’s work on schemes to improve the A4 at West Kennett and Beckhampton by 4 October.

Parking in Trusloe: The private company that owns about half the Nursery Site in Trusloe has expressed interest in a joint scheme to provide parking for local residents and the play area if the planners will give consent for a limited number of affordable and market homes as well. While planning policy on housing in the Parish is very tight, we decided to explore possibilities further by requesting Wiltshire Council to undertake a Rural Housing Needs Survey.

Condition of footpath from Church Walk to Bray Street, and strimming: Wiltshire Council agreed two years ago to include resurfacing the footpath in its programme for 2016/17 but it now appears that the work has been dropped. We decided to reapply, and make additional applications to the Community Area Transport Group and Wiltshire Council’s on-line system. And many thanks to the kind volunteer who strimmed the eastern end of the footpath; Wiltshire Council arrived the next day and strimmed the western section!

National Trust activities: The National Trust updated us on its Feast of Food, its Summer of Play, yoga sessions in the Manor Gardens, archaeological walks, Craft Fair, exhibition of local artists’ work, support for Avebury Day and its strategy of ‘Land, Outdoors and Nature’. Please see www.nationaltrust.org.uk/avebury for further details.

High Street toilets: The National Trust hopes to start work in November on improving its toilets in the village with completion by the end of the year. We have arranged a meeting to discuss extending opening hours of the High Street toilets outside the hours the Coach House café is open and other busy periods.

New mains water supply at the Pavilion: The pavilion now has a mains water supply! Many thanks to Dave Brotheridge for overseeing the project.

Defibrillator: We have decided in principle to buy a defibrillator for the High Street.

Date of next meeting: 7:30pm on Tuesday 4 October 2016 at the Social Centre.

After the service we went to Lyneham where we had a lovely ‘bring and share’ tea. Marlborough and District Embroiderers Guild

After our summer break we welcomed Isabelle Jourdan to speak about her great interest in spinning and weaving.

It started when she and her husband were running an olive farm on the Greek island of Lesbos and each Saturday for six months Isabelle attended a workshop and became totally enthralled by the craft. Isabelle does not believe in conventional weaving methods but follows the simple approach using a basic wooden frame and not a loom.

As a result of her introduction to weaving the next step was to create her own yarns. She does not sell her work; she teaches her techniques to encourage people to use their own ideas, colours and wools to make hangings, cards, brooches and bookmarks.

The next meeting of Marlborough & District Embroiderers Guild will be our AGM on Monday 3 October at the Kennet Valley Hall, Lockeridge followed by the speaker, Caroline Kirton and her talk will be entitled “Telling Tales”. The doors will open at 13.30 for a 14.00 start. All are welcome and if you require further information please ring 01672 861658 or visit our website: http://www.marlboroughembroiderers.org for further

information.

Miraculous find - part II Last month 9th August, Lockeridge A 3lb fresh rainbow trout on step in garden. Did anybody get the loaves? Reporter wishes to remain anonymous in case the house becomes a shrine……… A letter received by the editor….. Sir, I would not purport to spoil the Christian context of your publication but perhaps may offer “enlightenment”. I live at Longparish between Andover and Winchester as the name suggests it is a straggling but very pleasant village beside the river Test. Some years ago I suffered the first miraculous fish and was indeed very bemused - However - since - and again just of late have received another fish courtesy of a passing Heron. We are in effect on a Heron flight path here and just like Heathrow they follow an exact line between laneside oaks - observered so many times from my retirement garden seat to be a coincidence. Sometimes I think they take a fish which is just too heavy for their weight to wing ratio (although that is fairly spectacular in itself). I observed the one of late making a desperate struggle to avoid a crash landingin a gale that day. All feather - legs working hard an incredible sight to see at close quarters. The struggle was lost and a beautiful fresh trout crashed onto the lawn. I just managed to grab a frantic Golden Retriever in time and secured the prize. Foil wrapped, mint and a little rapeseed oil - a very pleasant supper for one. Sincerely Douglas Blount.

Winterbourne Monkton history project As part of the ongoing history project in Winterbourne Monkton

we are trying to find the original of the attached image of St. Mary Magdalene.

The watercolour was done in about 1807 and shows the church before it was rebuilt in 1874 by William Butterfield.

Unfortunately the image we have is of quite poor quality and seems to have been drained of all its colour (this could of course have happened to the original to after all this time) and we have no idea who painted it. Please contact Richard Nutt on [email protected] if you can help.

AVEBURY & DISTRICT WI

Avebury and District WI had our first formal meeting after our summer break on Thursday 8th September where we welcomed members and guests. Our speaker was Susan Tripp, a recently retired nurse who works for Macmillan as a stoma specialist dealing with patients who have a colostomy as a result of bowel cancer. She told us how she became a Macmillan nurse, losing her first husband at the very early age of 34 from lung cancer, leaving her with 2 small children and 4 step-children. Her husband’s death coincided with her nursing finals but she passed and, decided to train as a Macmillan nurse, eventually qualifying in her specialist area. She also told us about the areas that Macmillan can help in with advice and support for not just the patient but their family such as grants, respite care and advice on how to access equipment and benefits for families where the main earner is the one who is ill. Everyone there was humbled by her story although she insisted that she was just like everyone else and had done what was needed to keep her family together in a time of tragedy. Avebury Day Members helped decorate the large marquee that had bloomed on the sports field for the village lunch that was part of Avebury Day on Saturday 10th September. It’s amazing how covering shabby trestle tables with white paper banqueting roll and jars of beautiful flowers from members’ gardens as well as the famous WI bunting can transform a space. For the fete itself, members came up trumps again with cakes, jams and chutneys for our cake and produce stall which made £172! A huge thank you to everyone who helped with decorating the marquee, made cakes, manned the stall and with the clear up on Sunday morning. Thank you too to Dominic for the coffees on Sunday morning and for the barbecue expertly cooked by Kate! Both were much appreciated by all who helped with the clear up. Our next meeting is on 13th October and is by one of our members, Kyra Wilson, about the Civil War re-enactment society that she is a member of. Our Christmas lunch is on 8th December at a venue to be decided, I hope to have details of venue, a price and menu by our October meeting so please come prepared to pay either part or all of the amount.

Residents of West Overton - The Kennet Valley Hall needs your help

The most successful social and fund raising event held at the Hall every year is Christmas Bingo. The reason for it`s success [last year we raised over £900] is that all the contents of the hamper prizes are donated via a house to house

collection throughout the Valley. Fyfield, Lockeridge and East Kennett have well established teams – but in West Overton, sadly our traditional volunteers have now left the area.

The plan is to create a team of, say 5 – 10 people, so each volunteer would only have a few houses to call on. The Hall Committee provide personalized flyers to support you, which in my experience makes the expected call a pleasant

opportunity to meet the neighbours. Please remember, it`s your village hall, it needs to be self-financing, so we rely on local volunteers to make the Hall the

success it has become. So come on West Overton residents, please help us to make our Christmas Bingo event successful again this year.

Please give Brian a call on 861513. [If I`m out just leave a message and I will call you back]

September Update www.kennetvalley.wilts.sch.uk

The school re-opened on 1st September

with a record total of 102 pupils! There

was lots of excitment as the children

were reunited with friends a?er the summer holidays. I am

delighted that most of our pupils took part in and acheived the

Wiltshire Library Summer Reading Challenge and returned with

an impressive selecon of homework for a variety of tasks set

over the holidays describing what they have been up to...lots of

fun and interesng acvies at home and away!

We are pleased to hear that our pupils who have moved onto

St. John's are very quickly enjoying life there and the many new

opportunies that secondary school educaon offers.

What's new?

New pupils: We are delighted to welcome 13 new children

into our recepon class - they have all seBled in really quickly

and are making a great contribuon to life in Unicorn class.

We have formalised the arrangement of our oldest pupils

looking a?er the new younger ones and each recepon pupil

now has a year 6 buddy. This has worked exceponally well

for both sets of pupils. In a small school we are always able to

create a bigger family–feel to school life, where freindships

and caring for each other exists accross the age ranges.

New facili,es: Years 2&3 returned to a newly decorated

classroom and the school now has a fabulous new staffroom

and kitchen area, which groups of children will use for

cookery. We see cookery as a great opportunity to teach the

children about health, nutrion and science. Special thanks to

the Friends for funding this and Mr Bushnall for installing it

during the holidays. This term the children have already taken

home some amazing cookies, bread rolls & pizzas.

New staff: We welcomed Mr Turner from A.C.T.S Music

School who is joining us every Thursday a?ernoon to teach

music lessons and he is leading the school choir. The rousing

sounds of Fame and Malda can already be heard from the

hall. We do have some very talented singers in school and the

school as a whole enjoys singing during Collecve Worship

every morning. Mrs Francesca Mays has joined us in the office

to manage the running of the school finances.

Science: This year we will be working hard to bring science alive

in school. We will be installing a new science shack for

excing experiements including regular Experiment Days

where the children can focus on cross cirrcular links. I am

very grateful to Mrs Karen Jones from Lockeridge in her role

as Associate Governor for helping us take this forward. We

are also planning visits to West Woods to explore our

outside world – structures and materials linked to the science

curriculum.

Topics: "Be the Best" is out learning focus for this term which

will be woven into all subjects ("If you can dream it, you can

do it!") This will include exploring famous sporng heroes,

recording our goals using the laptops and i-pads, thinking

about our summer reading book (Danny Champion of the

World) and using art to explore our dreams. We have

Chrisan values to share with the children themed

throughout the school year. This term we will be learning

about generosity in all it's forms and thinking about beliefs

and pracces.

Avebury Fun Day: Very many thanks to The Friends and

parents for an amazing cake-baking effort and to all those

who ran the pavilion café all a?ernoon – some serious

compeon for Polly Tea Rooms I gather! Addionally,

Michelle Hancock and Amy Vickers very kindly donated all

the money they raised through their very popular pony rides

to the school. Thank you so much. In total this raised over

£600 which will be used to help fund new science and maths

equipment. I am pleased so many of our school families and

teachers were able to aBend this fun community event and

enjoyed all the acvies available. Diary date: Saturday 26th November – this year our school

Christmas Fayre will be held jointly with the Kennet Valley

Toddler Group at the Kennet Valley Hall, 10am-4pm. We

hope to see you there and an early appearance from Father

Christmas is expected!

Mrs Karen Venner, Headteacher.

doctor or hospital personnel in an emergency. If you feel you could benefit from this scheme, drop into the practice to request a ‘Message in a Bottle’ pack, which comprises of a Bottle, a Form and 2 Stickers. Bottles are free of charge.

Kennet Valley Hall Harvest Supper

After a short break of one year the Kennet Valley Hall again rang to the party that was the traditional Harvest Supper. Guests were wined, dined on a fine meal produced by a team lead by Mary and Jean. Entertainment before that meal was provided by a duet of accordions whilst the every faithful and versatile Cliff and Colin rounded off the evening with humours and song. How was it done for the money? At £6-00 per head, less than the price of a glass of wine in some restaurants, 57 diners enjoyed all this and there was a little left over for Hall funds. A lot of hard work by a large cast of volunteers. So well done to you all and you will be pleased to know that there is already a date booked for 2017!

Kennet Valley Film Nights Autumn/Winter Season

Sunday 16th October FLORENCE FOSTER JENKINS (PG) A significant patron of the arts in New York during the Second World War, Florence Foster Jenkins provided musical instruments for underprivileged children and set up The Verdi Club where she produced, directed and starred in tacky shows for select members of high society. But she always wanted to sing opera, despite her tone-deafness and distinct lack of talent. Now Stephen Frears brings the story to the big screen with three central performances of quality: Simon Helberg as FFJ’s exasperated accompanist, Hugh Grant as her attentive husband and of course the wonderful Meryl Streep in the title role. “In Streep’s inspired hands, Florence never becomes the expected figure of fun, but a diva-in-waiting whose unattainable aspirations you fully understand. And one can only imagine how much coaching the Mamma Mia! star needed to be able to sing badly! Streep’s purity in the face of Florence’s vocal limitations and her complete lack of cynicism towards the character are utterly relatable and totally charming. She gives poignancy to how the real Florence summed up her life: “People may say I can’t sing, but no one can say I didn't sing”. “

Doors open at 7.00 and there is a licensed bar and soft drinks.

All the films start at 7.30. To reserve tickets email: [email protected]
