“Life is a gift of God, and...death is unavoidable.”

- Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith

Walking into a hospital room to see a loved one unconscious and attached to numerous wires and machines is...uncomfortable. Typically, a desire arises in the observer to do something, to fix the problem, or to make them better. This is a natural response, but very often our desire to relieve the suf-fering of a loved one has more to do with ourselves than the other. Because it pains us to see them suffer, we want to eliminate their pain. Experiences like

this can also form our expectations regarding our own death. We don’t want to suffer like they did so we seek to eliminate suffering at all costs; even to the point where we try to exert con-trol over the process and circum-stances of death itself. This is a danger-ous mentality. One notable mark of the culture of death in which we live is, ironically, an avoidance of death as an inevitable reality. The reality of death is largely ignored until we are confronted with it. The Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith released a Declaration in 1980 addressing this. It said, “People...begin to wonder whether they have the right to obtain for themselves or their fel-lowmen an "easy death," which would

shorten suffering and which seems to them more in harmony with human dignity.” The idea of long-term or severe suffering that often ac-companies the process of death is “something which naturally causes people anguish.”The word Euthanasia itself denotes the intention to procure an “easy death.” (CDF, III) However, given that euthanasia is the action of intentionally causing the death of a person in order to eliminate his or her suffering, grave ethi-cal issues are brought to the forefront. Do we have the right to decide when someone has “had enough”? Is the decision to escape suffering a legitimate use of our freedom? Pope St. John Paul II’s 1995 encyclical Evan-

gelium Vitae exhorts that whether one’s death is caused by another based on a decision made by physi-cians and family members, or aided by another when requested by the person facing imminent death, it (like suicide) “represents a rejection of God's abso-lute sovereignty over life and death.” (EV, 66) Protection of the Vulnerable “A caring community devotes more attention, not less, to members facing the most vulnerable times in their lives.” (USCCB) The very existence of those who are sick and unable to care for themselves demands that the com-munity respond; for this is a demand of love. “What a sick person needs, be-sides medical care, is love, the human

and supernatural warmth with which the sick person can and ought to be surrounded by all those close to him or her, parents and children, doctors and nurses.” (CDF, III) Medical professionals, as well as family, friends, neighbors, and eligible voting citizens, must recognize that people who are suffering from terminal illness or who are facing imminent death of-ten “suffer from a kind of tunnel vision that sees relief only in death.” (USCCB) Counseling and loving support should be among the first responses to these persons. People who request death are vulnerable, and people who are unable to make their wishes known while they are ill or being hospitalized are equally vulnerable. They need care and protec-tion. (USCCB) If necessary, other medical means of relief may be sought and offered in response to suffering. In a 1957 ad-dress to a group of physicians, Pope Pius XII said, “it is licit to relieve pain by narcotics, even when the result is de-creased consciousness and a shorten-ing of life.” However, this does not mean that this decision can or should be made without any discernment. “It is not right to deprive the dying person of consciousness without a serious rea-son.” And, of course, if the administra-tion of certain medications might have, as one of its foreseeable effects, the death of the person, great care should be taken to ensure that the person’s death is not intended by the method of pain relief administered. Any person may refuse treatment that will alter their awareness, or that may have the effect of bringing about their death more expediently. Some heroic individuals may choose to forego pain medication if it gives them an opportu-nity to suffer on behalf of others, or simply the opportunity to prepare for their own death in full consciousness. Though this cannot be expected of

every suffering person, it can be en-couraged. (EV, 65) Faith & Accompaniment Euthanasia may be described as a mer-ciful act by some, but it is in fact a “perversion of mercy.” (EV, 66) St. John Paul II explains that, “True compassion leads to sharing another's pain; it does not kill the person whose suffering we cannot bear.” (EV, 65) It is dishearten-ing, to say the least, to see euthanasia promoted by relatives “who are sup-posed to treat a family member with patience and love, or by those, such as doctors, who by virtue of their specific profession are supposed to care for the sick person even in the most painful terminal stages.” (EV, 66)

Accompaniment entails being with the person in their pain and suffering. We need not worry about doing or saying the right thing, and it may not be our job to eliminate their suffering. In fact, even if we could, it might not be the most loving thing to do. I was once told the story of a saint (I unfortu-nately, cannot remember the name of this saint) who had prayed for healing of his illness and was miraculously healed. However, he then said to the Lord in prayer that if it would be better, for the sake of his sanctification, that the illness would return, than it should. And it did. Euthanasia deprives loved ones of the opportunity to love, serve, and sacrifice - actions which lend to their sanctifica-tion. To choose to end someone's life, even if we think that we have compas-sionate reasons for considering this, is a refusal of the grace and gifts that God might grant during the remainder

of that life that is deliberately brought to an end. The inability to see meaning or value in suffering is a sign of a defi-ciency in the virtue of faith. Euthanasia also deprives the terminally ill person from the opportunity to dis-play the strength, courage, faith, hope and the witness to what human beings are truly capable of, in and through Christ. An unwillingness to allow loved ones to care for you is rooted in a pride that needs to be eliminated in preparation for one’s own death. Great humility can be gained by letting loved ones feed, clothe, bathe, and provide the things that one should be able to do for oneself. As St. Paul said, "None of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's." (Rom 14:7-8) Under-standing how to die with dignity is in-herently linked to an understanding of how live in the Lord. Suffering will al-ways be considered an evil in itself, but can also become a source of good. The one who suffers willingly, “if it is ex-perienced for love and with love,” can, by God’s grace, become more fully conformed to Christ Crucified. (EV 67) The Church consistently warns against the temptation toward escapism. Death must not be seen as an escape. Faith allows for the suffering, as well as those who witness the suffering of loved ones, the ability to say with con-fidence, that the Lord will not burden us beyond our strength, and if He does, He will give us the strength to bear it. (1 Cor. 10:13)

Lita Arroyo is the Director of Parish Evangelization at St. Mary Magdalene.

“Suffering, which is present under so many different forms in our human world, is also present in order to unleash love in the human person, that unselfish gift of one's "I" on be-half of other people, especially those who suffer.” (Pope St. John Paul II, Salvifici Doloris, para. 29) Kristi’s Story Kristi Hillier grew up in a good Catholic family and had al-ways wanted to have kids. She never imagined that she would have an abortion, but found herself in a situation where she simply wasn’t supported. Begrudgingly, she made the decision to go in to the abortion clinic. “From the moment I checked in, I became a number.” She listened as some of the other women there talking about how it was their second or their third abortion - like it was birth con-trol. “The last thought going through my head was, ‘I don’t want to be here.’” Afterward, Kristi turned away from the Church. She thought to herself, “I’ve killed another human being. God cannot forgive that.” She later met her husband David, who encouraged her to go to confession. She told him he was crazy, but she went. “Going to confession, I felt like a ton of bricks had been lifted off of my shoulders. It was beautiful and I thought, ‘I’m healed.’ But I wasn’t healed.” When she and David were pregnant for the first time and had a miscarriage, she thought she was being punished. Then, one Sunday, someone shared about Ra-chel’s Vineyard at Mass and she felt as though they were speaking directly to her. That was all the prompting she

needed to make a phone call and register for the Rachel’s Vineyard weekend retreat. Deb’s Story

Debra Abel, a former cafeteria Catholic, saw a pamphlet at a church one day that said, “Are you suffering from the ef-fects of an abortion?” At that point, she hadn’t dealt with the pain of her previous abortions. “I was pro-choice at the time. After all, I had done it, how could I tell someone else not to?” She quickly grabbed the pamphlet and shoved it in her purse, hoping that no one saw her. “After my mom died, I had this strong sense that she was in heaven with my chil-dren and she said, ‘You need to get healing now.’ I was very close to my mom. I was living in Colorado then, but found a Rachel’s Vineyard retreat in Phoenix that had some spots available.” “Do not give in to discouragement and do not lose hope. Try rather to understand what happened and face it hon-estly…as a result of your own painful experience, you can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone's right to life…you will become promoters of a new way of looking at human life.” (Pope St. John Paul II, Evangeliam Vitae, para. 99) Mike’s Story “We’ve all been drawn to Rachel’s Vineyard in different ways,” said Mike Rimbey, “and for me, it was through a Catholic counselor I was seeing for something that was not tied to abortion at all.” After Mike finally shared about his abortion experience with the counselor, she put her hand up and said, “I know what’s causing your panic attacks.” She gave him a number to call and recommended that he at-tend a Rachel’s Vineyard retreat. “And I did. And I almost left. There were no other guys there. It was all women. So I’m standing there and Satan’s just shouting in my ear say-ing, ‘You’re not supposed to be here, this is a woman’s thing.’ I got in my car, a panic attack’s coming on, and I de-cided to stay and listen to the women share their stories. For a lot of these women, men had forced them to have an abortion, or they were raped, or it was incest. In my case, I was a 19-year-old male, dating a 15-year-old girl. I was the adult. It was my fault. It wasn’t hers. After finding out that she was pregnant, she said to Mike, “My mom wants me to have an abortion,” and he said, “Don’t do it.” He went to her parents’ house the next day and saw her sitting on the swing with an empty look on her face, and he just knew. Since then, there were a few times that Mike thought to himself, “Well, it wasn’t my fault; it was her mother’s fault. She’s the one who took her.” He had to forgive her mother. The retreat gave him the opportunity to let go of that re-sentment.

Suffering Unleashes Love an Interview with Debra Abel, Kristi Hillier, Jim Pappas, and Mike Rimbey

Jim’s Story

“It would have been difficult for me to go on that retreat if it had been only women there,” Jim Pappas said, “but Mike was on the team.” In a past rela-tionship, Jim was told that his child was miscarried, but the child was actually the victim of abortion. He didn’t find out until 7 years later. “I had this in-tense hatred and rage like I never ex-perienced. I hated her. I had to get rid of the hate because it was killing me! It wasn’t affecting her at all but it was eating me up inside.” Through the re-treat Jim was able to empathize with the women sharing their stories. This led to him being able to forgive the mother of his child. What is Rachel’s Vineyard? Rachel’s Vineyard is a weekend retreat dedicated to healing after abortion. Every retreat includes Mass, confession, Scriptural meditation, and a memorial service for the children of the atten-dees. It’s a Catholic retreat, but you do not have to be Catholic to go. Jim de-scribed the atmosphere as, “love and acceptance no matter what you did, or how many times, whether you were raped, or promiscuous in college. Whatever your story - it is so not judg-mental.” In order to create an environ-ment where healing can take place, confidentiality is very important. Jim explained that team members are s t r i c t l y b o u n d to t h i s . “There are more layers to this issue than just a woman’s choice or a man’s choice,“ Jim continued. “There was a man that went on a Rachel’s Vineyard retreat whose granddaughter had an abortion. He went because he had such guilt that he didn’t do enough to protect his great grandchild.” Many others go on the retreat because they have survivor’s guilt - siblings of chil-dren who were aborted sometimes ask, “Why am I alive and they are not?” Healing Through Service The sorrow and suffering that these

women and men have experienced has been transformed into a self-giving love that inspires them to volunteer in Post-Abortive healing ministry. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about my children,” said Deb, “but God allowed that suffering to happen for me to be at this place where I am now.” Had she not had the abortions, Deb wonders, “Would I be as pro life as I am now? Would I be participating in the sacraments as much as I do now? I really think that it’s the prayers of my children that contrib-uted to that.” For Kristi, part of her healing came through getting involved in the Pro Life movement as well. “Sometimes I have a hard time listening to God, so he often sends people into my life that say ‘Hey, I think you should do this!’ I had one of those moments.” A parishioner con-tacted her about a TV commercial that Virtue Media was producing, and sug-gested that she be featured in it. Kristi decided that she was willing to be filmed sharing her story, knowing that if even one person was positively af-fected by her openness, it was worth speaking about. When Deb was asked to take over the Respect Life Initiative at St. Mary Mag-dalene, her first inclination was to say no. “I opened up the Imitation of Christ that I had with me and it went right to the passage that says, “How can I repay the LORD for all the great good done for me?” (Psalm 116:12) to which she thought, “Do you have to be so clear?!” She continued that in the Imitation of Christ, “It goes through a conversation with the person who is praying, who says, ‘I’m not qualified!’ and God is saying, ‘Yes, you are. I’ll help you.’” The Respect Life Initiative is not a club for parishioners that care about life issues. It is part of our mission as a Church; and therefore of St. Mary Mag-dalene parish as well. Participating in the Respect Life Initiative at St. Mary

Magdalene does mean going to weekly meetings, it simply means asking God, in prayer, “Lord, what would you have me do?” and doing whatever you are called to do when there is an opportu-nity to pray or raise awareness. “We’re all here on the front lines to save chil-dren,” Jim said, “but also to help peo-ple to heal. They have panic attacks and they don’t know why, they are dis-connected from their family and they don’t know why. There are people out there that are not having as fulfilled a life as they can. They are putting up a wall between them and God and they don’t know it. Part of our job is to help them recognize that they are no ‘worse’ than any of us, and to help them get healing. That’s what it’s about.” There is no sin that cannot be for-given. The only sin that is unforgiv-able is the one for which the sinner does not ask forgiveness. Anyone who has had an abortion is encour-aged to meet Christ in the confes-sional, in the person of the priest, to seek out and receive the Lord’s mercy. Anyone who has been touched by abortion, is invited to consider attending an upcoming Ra-chel’s Vineyard retreat. Visit www.rachelsvineyard.org for more information.

Debra Abel, Kristi Hillier, Jim Pappas, and Mike Rimbey are parishioners and are very active in the St. Mary Magdalene commu-nity. They have all attended, and served on the team for Rachel’s Vineyard. Please do not hesitate to approach one of them. They are happy to talk with you.
