The Basics
• Preparing for your shoot– What point do you want to convey?– Do you have a script or at least an outline?– Do you have a shot list?– Will you log times or will someone else help you?
Filming Advice• When You Shoot
– Roll for 5 seconds• At the front/back
– Don’t rush• Shoot shots longer than
your gut tells you
– Shoot different angles• Variety is a good thing
Interviewing
• Shooting Interviews- Have your subject look
at you, NOT the camera- Stand just to right/left of
camera- Looking at camera =
selling and no credibility
– Use a tripod– Check for sound before
you start
Interviewing (con’t)
• Interview Techniques- Don’t ask “yes” or “no”
questions
- Follow the train of thought
- Have your subject repeat your question before answering
Editing • Editing
- Go pro when/if you can- Lets you focus on the
content, not the technical
– If you edit yourself• Know your software• Keep it simple• Ask for advice• Study other videos for
ideas

Editing and Mixing
• Sound Thinking– Select the right sound
bites from interviews– Music and/or Effects
• News or feature?• Complement not
compete
• Recording the VO?– Smile (but not too much)
