Two Barcia Bale litters OUTSTANDING national stud

    success, Barcia Bale (March 2010

Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale)

heads this week’s review of litters

    registered with GRV during the

    week ending 6 November.

Only six litters on the list at an average of 6.0 but

what’s lacking in quantity is certainly made up for by

    the Quality.

Devon Meadows breeder, Karen Leek has the first

Barcia Bale litter, which has three dogs and four bitches,

from the beautifully bred, successful producer, Lady

Deedee (February 2011 Collision x Tamra), whose dam

is by Token Prince x Miss Amberbee (Bobniak x Lovely

    Portrait).

She is from a litter of ten named which produced

nine winners who won 61 races between them.

Her record shows she raced 31 times, for six wins

and nine placings, winning three times over 250 metres

up the straight at Healesville (19.18), twice over 425

metres at Bendigo (23.99) and also over 450 metres at

    Warrnambool (25.72).

She has a 100% win record as a brood bitch, with

all five named from her first litter, whelped in June

    2015, by Djays Octane*, winning.

Her second litter, whelped in April 2017 by

Kinloch Brae*, has three dogs and three bitches who

should be not far off making their debut on the track.

Ring The Bell Syndicate, Manager Scott Grace,

has the second Barcia Bale litter, with one dog and four

bitches from the well bred bitch, She’s Got Grace

(February 2014 Cosmic Rumble x Free Dream), whose

dam is by Meticulous x Who’s Girl (Token Prince x

    Opporchancity).

She is from a handy litter of eight named, from

which the seven who raced, all won, a total of 72 races,

led by Eyes On You, 73-25-12-11 and Shake The Night,

    75-15-11-12.

Her record shows she raced 74 times, for 15 wins

and 21 placings, winning three times over 515 metres at

Sandown (29.40), where she also won twice over 595

metres (34.35), three times over 460 metres at Geelong

(25.78), where she also won over 400 metres (22.31)

and three times over 440 metres at Sale (25.05), with

single wins over 525 metres at The Meadows (30.36),

460 metres at Warragul (26.66) and 480 metres at

    Horsham (27.20).

Magic litter CRANBOURNE breeder, Lorraine Langley has

a nice litter of six pups on the list this week by

Melbourne Cup winner, Black Magic Opal (May

2011 Magic Sprite x Awesome Opal).

The three dogs and three bitches are from the

handy, dual distance city winner, Stunning Success

(November 2013 Kinloch Brae* x Absolute Stunna),

whose dam is by Bombastic Shiraz x Regal Blaze (Pure

    Octane x Sound Lee).

She is from a litter of nine named, with six of the

seven who raced, sharing 122 race wins between them.

Ring The Bell led the way with 37 wins, followed

by Blazin’ Bomber with 27 wins, Bells Are Ringin, 21

wins, Absolute Silence, 17 wins, her 13 wins and Miss

    Kadia, 7 wins.

She raced 46 times, for her 13 wins and ten

    Blue Striker

    Melbourne Cup Redemption

    by Mick Floyd

My Redeemer ($4.60) gave David Geall his biggest

thrill in greyhound racing by winning the TAB

Melbourne Cup (515m) at Sandown Park on 23

    November.

On one of the most eagerly anticipated editions of the

world’s greatest greyhound race, My Redeemer began

cleanly from box one but was headed by favourite Black

Opium ($3.00) to the first turn.

My Redeener (rail), Black Opium (5) and Dyna Harpa (3) charge

into the first turn. Photo—Clint Anderson.

My Redeemer (Fernando Bale – Where’s Demonica)

held his position on the rail and after a brief bumping

duel, he emerged a length clear entering the back

straight. From there he was never challenged, doubling

his margin off the back straight and powering to the line

to register a brilliant 4.5 length victory in 29.38sec.

Nineteen-month-old Black Opium finished a gallant

second – her first defeat in eight career starts – while

She’s Gifted finished an impressive third after coming

from last past the post the first time.

Geall could barely contain his emotions after the

    victory.

“It’s just the greatest feeling in the world,” Geall told

Sky Racing. “As a trainer, a Melbourne Cup is what we

all want. Just to see him jump so well in the biggest race

in the world – I tell you what this is sensational.”

Geall and owner Brendan Sinfield had a large

contingent of family and friends trackside to experience

the moment in what proved one of the most popular

victories in the race’s 63 year history.

My Redeemer was bred by Geall and his wife Rose and

was their second Cup finalist after Up Hill Jill – My

    Redeemer’s older half-sister – was unplaced in the 2017

    edition.

The win was My Redeemer’s second group 1 following

Barcali does Warrnambool proud By Andrew Copley and Molly Haines

It was a proud moment for the seaside town of

Warrnambool when Barcali (Barcia Bale – Born Ali)

took out the $150,000 Group 1 Bold Trease (715m)

    on Melbourne Cup night.

Barcali (3) overtakes Black Impala in the straight to win the Bold

    Trease. Photo - Clint Anderson.

Bred in Warrnambool by former AFL high-flier, Noel

Mugavin, Barcali charged home to defeat the front-

running Black Impala ($8.30) by .64 lengths with Hot

    Tip ($27.90) third in 42.01sec.

Bold Trease is widely regarded as Australia’s greatest

ever stayer. Trained in Warrnambool by Norm

McCullagh, the son of Roy Trease and Irish Temptress

won four Sandown Cups (1986-89) and was dubbed the

    ‘Warrnambool Warrior’.

“His run was unbelievable,” Mugavin said. “To win a

race like the Bold Trease, named after one of the

greatest men and his dog from Warrnambool, makes me

almost speechless. Norm (McCullagh) is a superstar and

he has done so much for the Warrnambool community,

so it is great to win a race remembering the great Bold

    Trease.”

Mugavin, who is an uncle of AFL great Jonathan

Brown, also sang the praises of Barcali’s trainer Robert

    Britton.

“Robbie is an absolute genius. He is starting to get the

reputation as the Bart Cummings of greyhound racing

and I think he is earning it.

    He is a wonderful trainer.”

It was Britton’s third Bold Trease, having won the race

with champion Fanta Bale in 2017 and Cheetah Zorro in

    2013.

There were a total of eight feature races on Melbourne

Cup night, with $1,000,000 in prize money won across

    the 12 race card.

Other feature winners on the night were:

    $35,500 Group 3 Cup Night Sprint (515m) – Barooga

    Brett (Brooke Ennis)

    $35,500 Group 3 Sir John Dillon Memorial (595m) –

    Warmer Weather

Finally some warmer weather in Victoria.

But irrespective of where you live be mindful

when walking your greyhounds that they may

take some time to adjust to the heat

Greyhounds traditionally don’t like walking in

    temperatures above 25 degrees so:

    Ditch the coats

Keep the walks shorter until they adjust

    Walk earlier in cooler temperatures

    Watch for signs of distress

    Keep your dogs hydrated and

Make sure they have water immediately

    they get home

And watch out for snakes in long grass

    because they are active.

    Esther Gill

The new boy from the NT is settling in, maybe a little too

well. He likes to wait on the side of the house that has no

shade until someone comes home and gets sunburnt.

We are having a little troubles with his behavior and would

love some insight/ suggestions from everyone who can help

guide us! (Many thanks in advance)

Our boy Bart is a very quiet, gentle and calm, Rueben from

the NT is a ball of energy, very active, a bit on the bossy side,

attention demanding and doesn't seem to know how too

share. Rueben has been acting aggressively towards Bart

randomly throughout the day when Rueben decides he wants

something that Bart has/ doesn't want Bart to have, or wants

Bart to move from the spot where Bart is sleeping and not

because he wants the spot himself. Or he doesn't want Bart

sleeping/ going near him. It would be nice to see them get

    along peaceful and play together.

Bart has had play dates with another local grey and they are

lovely boys together, playing and sharing. Rueben has been

to a few local grey gatherings and we're been told he was

always on his best behaviour, though his needs and wants

were always attended too straight away and I feel like that is

the cause of this behaviour of his. Last night Bart tried to lie

on the living room rug with Rueben, normally not a problem

but Rueben was like nope I don't want you here and went off

    at Bart.

There are times where I am giving Bart attention and love

and Rueben has came up to try and push Bart out of the way

(even when I give Rueben the same attention first), I stick my

arm out and keep Rueben at a distance when this happens and

might sometimes growl at him if he keeps at it. (I try to be

fair when giving my attention to both boys and when one gets

a walk the other always comes along)

Is there away to help stop and control this aggressive

behavior towards Bart? As we feel like Bart is being picked

on and Rueben is being unfair.

P.s This is the very first time that he has ever gotten up onto a

couch! He is normally a bed messier boy, who loves to do

zoomies on beds instead of the floor or outside.

    FOSTER A GREYHOUND:

There are many greyhounds who need a little more

assistance to help them settle into pet life

    They fall into two categories

Greyhounds who are transitioning from the track

and need help to pass their GAP assessment

    OR

Those dogs who have been a marginal fail at their

    GAP assessment

These dogs are just gorgeous happy greyhounds, the

only difference is that need a little more help to

    transition into pet life

The reality is that without foster carers some of

    these dogs are at risk
