3. Etiquette:
To Salute (With Headdress on) to the National Flag during National Anthem
and to ranks of Cadet Inspector (CI) and above
Greeting (Parade Square): Squad IC is to Command Squad to Attention,
then face officer, salutes him/her and asks permission to carry on.
Greeting (Classroom): Cadet nearest to the door will stand up and shout
‘room’. Everyone else will be at their tightest position, seated. Cadet will
greet officer and asks for permission to carry on. Cadet will then shout
‘room at ease’ and get seated himself.

Soft Skill Module #4: Effective Communication
1. Effective Communication – Disseminating Right Information to Right People
Quickly and Effectively by having Good Means of Communication
2. Mediums of Communication:
Information may deviate, change and differ from original

3. Communication Breakdown:
Unable to Contact one another
Information disseminated inefficiently, slowly and differs from original.
Some may receive while others may not
Ways to prevent –
Discuss the Main Mode of Communication with Squad
(Facebook? SMS? Whatsapp?)
Check everyone has the correct information beforehand and not do
things last minute
If one gets it wrong, ask one for source and pinpoint problem and
solve it from there
4. Communication with Juniors:

Telling them details on a particular activity?

Who are you speaking to?
Sec1s or Sec2s?
Sec1s have lesser attention span than Sec2s, and they have lesser
experience.

Why are you telling them this?
Is it for an upcoming activity or to give instructions?
Make sure they know your purpose, and what should they know at
the end of it

Tone –
How should you speak to them?
Fierce and authoritative? (When giving instructions or correcting
their mistakes)
Friendly? (During interaction time such as Games)
Gentle? (When counseling e.g. cadet having problem with time
management/too much stress)
Stern? (During drills)
Important on how you communicate with them. Be direct, straightforward
but never be rude by hurling profanities and always, use the appropriate
tone for the appropriate times. Lastly, be confident!
5. Non-Verbal Communication:
Body Language is important
Have eye contact to make sure they are paying attention
Pause when necessary (it makes it more effective altogether)
Allow greater understanding from Juniors when you speak
Make sure you are up to standard in terms of grooming and attire
Maintain good posture as it shows your confidence level
Do not keep hands by side as it shows the lack of confidence. Use hand
gestures to smoothen out the flow of your conversation
6. Common Misconceptions:
Good in English IS NOT Good in Communication – Make sure it’s two-way!
Good in Speaking IS NOT Good in Communication – Use simple English!
