VICTORIA GOSDEN graduate landscape architect
portfolio of works
Introduction
Raised to love nature and the organic beauty of the world, I have always enjoyed drawing inspiration from my surroundings to create invigorating and engaging designs. I initially set out to pursue a career as a fine artist, specialising in landscapes and wildlife. As I progressed, I came to realise that my true passion lay in creating actual landscapes rather than merely their likenesses, which could then go on to be used and enjoyed by real people.
My aim as a landscape architect is to use landscapes to encourage people to spend time and enjoy being outside; bringing together communities, and help-ing to establish a successful union between the man-made and the natural.
I am currently approaching the end of my final year studying landscape architecture at the University of Gloucestershire , Cheltenham, UK. Whilst working on my degree, I learned a wide range of skills, from computer design to the latest sustainable technologies and their implementations around the world. I am confident that I have now reached a level of competence in my chosen subject that I am proud and honoured to sharemy works.

Masterplan
Currently a run-down car park, many efforts have been made in recent years to redevelop St James’ Square, an area which lies in the centre of an otherwise attractive neighbourhood. The brief required new housing to be constructed, as well as a multi-purpose commercial building, outdoor spaces and landscaping, along with flood management systems for River Chelt, which runs along the southern border of the site. This designincorporates open landscaped spaces, a natural and sustainable flood-proofing system in the form of a lowered channel filled with planting.

University of GloucestershireYear 2 Sustainable Technology module
Feb 2015
The Forest of Dean (Hereford, UK) has a long history of coal mining, and this abandoned site has been proposed for development in recent years. The brief detailed the provision of a small number of residential dwellings, a holistic/well-being centre, commercial office units, a primary school and tourist accommodation/activities.

Year 2 Design ModuleJune 2015
A small campus based in the north of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, Hardwick specialises in art and design-based courses, including fine art, interior design and photography. Currently the university buildings sit on a relatively bare open field, featuring nothing of interest, and providing no sense of character for the campus. This design proposal is based around the swirling of paint when mixed, and features raised grassed knolls, seating, decorative planting, and vastly increased, primarily pedestrian access.

Year 2 Design ModuleFebruary 2015
The resulting three images portray the changes within the neighbourhood over time through the “stories” the wall has seen - from the war-stricken past, to the ambient present, and onwards to the future, in which the words of the next generation’s thoughts on their neighbourhood can be seen.
This project was based around creating artwork for the community of St Pauls neighbourhood in Cheltenham, reflecting the inherent character of the community. This piece was to focus on the an old wall running adjacent to the neighbourhood, effectively separating it from the rest of the town.
In order to gain an understanding of the area, I questioned local residents, including a class of school children, students, elderly residents and families. I then researched local newspaper headlines and stories relating to the St Pauls,
both from recent times, and from as early as the 1940s.

Magnolia Court , a small courtyard within the Francis Close university campus currently suffers from poor maintenance and use. This design proposal offers a more
vibrant landscape scheme, using raised fern beds and central water channels to create a “woodland valley” effect.

Rio de Janeiro Show GardenUniversity of Gloucestershire
Year 2 Design ModuleOct 2014
The upcoming Rio de Janeiro Olympics caused considerable controversy when they were announced, and not without good reason. This show garden seeks to demonstrate the stark contrast between the wealthy and poverty-stricken social groups
living in Rio, and creates a sense of what a visitor to the games may experience. Designed around the Olympic symbol for the Rio Games, the central space is full of bright, colourful planting, and engaging water features, but the rising, dark blocks
surrounding represent Rio’s slums, and the undeniable corruption of what Rio would like to portray as a vibrant, beautiful city.
