EBOH Donation to Henryville, Indiana—Picking up the pieces after Tornado!

In Henryville, an EF-4 tornado — the second-highest on the Fujita scale that measures tornadic force — brought 175-mph winds and stayed on the ground for more than 50 miles. Two days later, all the talk was of the future, and of rebuilding. Inside St. Francis during Sunday Mass, the only light came from candles on the altar and pale sunlight coming through stained glass windows. There was no power and no heat. The congregation of about 150 people compared notes about damage to their homes, the safety of their families. Along the 10-mile stretch of winding county road from Henryville to Marysville, almost every home and barn is damaged; and the reports go on and on………………

In the midst of all this devastation and destruction, the “Early Birds of Hoosierland” were so concerned for all of these families living in Henryville and most of all our own club members, Ken & Martha Shaw and Joel and Sandy McShane. I received numerous phone calls and emails wanting to know if I had heard from anyone in Henryville. We finally were able to reach Joel to find out that they had only slight damage to their home and the Shaw’s were good! Both of them, very, very lucky! The Red Cross and Salvation Army were attending to the families in Henryville and our club members decided we should make our own donation of $500.00 to Henryville in hope that we could help in some way. Club member, Charlie Kinder has also added another $500.00 too! To date, many club members stepped up and gave to total of $2,500 toward rebuilding lives. Ken reported that the money will be donated via the Henryville Commu-nity Church. Here are the responses from the Shaw’s and McShane’s during their horrible ordeal.. ***************************************************************************************************************

Hi Bev,

Sorry I have been so lax in keeping in contact with everyone. Martha and I sincerely appreciate everyone`s concern not only for us and Joel & Sandy but the entire community. None of us are native to Henryville and have no family ties to the area although we have lived here for 36 years but we are still overwhelmed by the destruction to the area. Last week Martha and I took a drive through the side roads within a mile of our home and the destruction was unbelievable. I can`t believe it came that close. It is hard to imagine the amount of aid coming into the area. I plan to contact the Hen-ryville Community Church next week about our club`s donation. I have talked to my neighbor who said he heard they have received donations to rebuild about 20 homes. This may be good place to direct our donation. I will keep every-one informed. Once again our thanks to everyone.

Ken & Martha Shaw

*********************************************************************************************************

We are so blessed. We are safe, we now have a generator, so have heat (Sandy can do coffee and hair in the morning!). Staying home due to looters. We cannot believe what good friends our Thunderbird Club friends are and all the offers of help. You guys are the best! We mean it – the best, this has been a very emotional time for us. We love all of you! Sandy & Joel

PS: All cars are ok! Joel’s trailer is destroyed, but functional! We never knew that joining the Thunderbird Club would ever mean so much to us!!

A few things I learned about Tornado survival:

1. Never underestimate the generosity of family and friends (and the power of be-longing to a great car club!) – amazed and grateful to all who called and for offers of help.

2. Never underestimate the generosity of strangers and volunteers – we are in awe at all the help our little town has received.

3. Be better prepared. Joel’s birthday gift will be a weather/emergency radio and a generator (a big generator, so I can have hot water!).

4. Solar lights from your yard can be brought in at night when you have no power - better than candles!

4. Be generous to those in need – every little bit helps.

5. Shop more! Joel always teases me about using my coupons to get “freebies” & stock piling toiletries and personal items. But I was able to donate a whole bag of stuff – right from my closet.

Hope to see all of you soon.- Joel & Sandy McShane

MAY MEETING - EBOH 40TH ANNIVERSARY 1972-2012

HOW TO START A FIGHT…..

When our lawn mower broke and wouldn't run, my wife kept hinting to me that I should get it fixed. But, somehow I al-ways had something else to take care of first, the shed, the boat, making beer... Always something more important to me. Finally she thought of a clever way to make her point.

When I arrived home one day, I found her seated in the tall grass, busily snipping away with a tiny pair of sewing scis-sors. I watched silently for a short time and then went into the house. I was gone only a minute, and when I came out again I handed her a toothbrush. I said, "When you finish cutting the grass, you might as well sweep the driveway."

The doctors say I will walk again, but I will always have a limp.

Sunday, May 20th @ 12:00 Noon—Caravan, if you like, from the south side of Indianapolis (more details soon). Meet at Abe Mar-

tin Lodge, Brown County State Park, Nashville, Indiana 47448 (812) 988-4418. Lunch buffet at 12:30—cost $10-$11.00/person. Followed

by fun and games (outside if possible) please bring your chairs and coolers of pop if you like too! If you have any photos, etc. from 1972 that you

would like to share as well bring those along as well. The Abe Martin Lodge is nestled in the picturesque hills of Indiana’s largest state

park, 16,000 acre Brown County State Park. The Main Lodge, built in 1932 of hand-hewn native stone and oak timber cut in the

park, has 30 guest rooms, a unique gift shop, and two spacious and comfortable lobbies, one with a fireplace. Native sandstone

and warm woods surround you in the restaurant, reminiscent of the 1930’s. The lodge has beautiful outdoor verandas overlook-

ing the sloping back lawn, park and the hills. The lodge also features fifty-four rooms in the

Annex building along with twenty housekeeping cabins and fifty-six rustic

cabins. Abe Martin Lodge truly has accommodations to meet any need.

Thank you!

My twin brother Stephen, who is on the Lafayette

Police Department, was asked to ride the Harley

Trike in a parade in Lafayette. He had multiple

problems with the motorcycle when he went to ride

in it. The lights and brakes were not working well

and it would not restart after he turned it off. At

that point Stephen asked our Dad if he could work

on it. The Trike was in our parent’s garage for two

years. Dad repaired the wiring and charging. He

replaced the rear brakes and wheel cylinders. He

also cleaned the carburetor and fuel tank along with

numerous other things. The Lafayette Police De-

partment had purchased two 1969 Harley Trikes in

1969 to be used in the down town area for Parking

and Traffic control. The top speed on this Trike is 55 MPH. It had 350 miles when Stephen brought it

to our Dad to work on. The Trike now has 550

MPH. Stephen has been able to ride the trike in sev-

eral different parades including the Veterans Day Pa-

rade, MDA, Christmas Parade and Dancing in the

Streets Car Show and Parade. He also used it to es-

cort a Harley Davidson Charity Ride. We are very

proud of “Poppy”.
