Gennakers Report – 20th Jan 2019

(by Duncan and Mike. Pictures by Phill)

It was another large Gennaker fleet, with three 15’s, three RS100’s and

a MG.

Light winds and a strong outgoing tide resulted in some cautious starting by the

fleet. Still, what resulted was fairly level (everyone showing the same degree of

caution).

The faster boats kept on starboard tack heading for the northern shore, while other

boats tacked off and crossed the channel – often as they came under the shadow of a

passing boat. But when the wind shifted south, many of those slower boats found

themselves ahead of the skiffs, resulting in something of a pileup at the first mark.

The problems for the Gennaker boats were multiplied as they found the mono fleet

didn’t conveniently bear away and head downwind – instead they continued more or

less straight ahead downstream to a gybe mark.

Several Gennaker boats had to perform some major evasive actions to get room to

bear away around an inside mono.

When things settled down, Secret (Barry and his son Daniel – the latter in a practice

sail for the Nationals) and Mr Bond (Michael and Tara) found themselves in the

lead and only a stone’s throw apart. And they stayed that way through intense

tacking and gybing duals for the rest of the race. On the whole, Mr Bond had the

advantage downwind and Secret upwind, with the lead constantly changing. But at

the last bottom mark Secret managed to retain the lead and held it to a close finish.

Behind them, Toxic (Zac and Francine) enjoyed a less intensive sail, finishing

between the RS100’s.

Bringing up the rear was the MG (Tom and Brendan) whose small rig wasn’t

suited to the conditions.

Of the RS100’s Casper (Duncan) stayed well clear of HoRus (Vincent) and Shachi

(Bill), who swapped places many times. The three RS100's were joined after the

race by a fourth boat Hooray #243 (Garry Scott), new to RS100's and to the club.

Welcome Garry!

Mono Report

Cosmic is back with Charlie and Matt

The starter saw eight mono's front for this personal handicap race.

Missing in action were Cameron with a still damaged Impulse from the previous

week and Paul on Raver.

A new face on the club training laser was Anna (who is more usually seen skittering

around on the front end of the F15 Secret). The tail end of a hefty run out tide

convinced everyone to play safe on the line, and most boats get away to a good

start. Alter Ego hit the front and was one of three boats to jam up on the first

mark, causing Secret much consternation as it continued to the mono's downstream

mark, forcing Secret to tack to clear rather than the usual gybe/hoist. Sorry about

that boys!

The NS Cosmic and the 59r were close astern, with the Laser, RS Aero, 1-up

Northy Retro following closely.

Des in Olde Golde and the 1-up Pacer capably handled by young Steffen brought up

the rear. With the wind fading the race was a procession for most, just trying to eke

out any advantage to compensate for the handicapper's wilfulness. Des and Stephan

called it a day when the fleet was sent around for the third time.

Anna showed her European training off by convincingly taking the race by three

minutes, an impressive effort [until her generous handicap was cut back]: (the old

blue boat has now scored back-to-back wins after Christmas "open-hull" surgery

stopped it's tendency to sink after a few minutes sailing!). Watch out boys and

Gracie there is a new champion on the block.

CLUB NEWS Welcome to three new Skipper/boats who participated in their first race last Sunday:

Jenny & Alan Melville who now sail the Nacra 4.5 ‘No Waiting’

Ric Charmers on another new Nacra 4.5 ‘Sinbad’.

Steffen who sailed a Pacer single handed in the last race.

Congratulations to all of them. Please make them feel welcome.

The club now has a Defibrillator kit.

Last Sunday about 20 members participated in a training session on when and how to use our new life saver.

It will live on the wall under the first-aid cabinet and I hope we never use it.
