PALM SUNDAY
Term: 1 Week: 9
2017
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome everyone to the end of Week 9. We only have one more week till the end of term!
Where has the time gone?
Hall Storage
A massive thank-you to Jamey Dutkiewicz and his company Brother Projects. Jamey has
donated his time and resources to build the school a new storage room in our hall for all our
chairs and trestle tables. This will complete the tidy-up of our hall. Please pass on a big thanks to
Jamey and Sonia when you see them next.
Open-Day Flyers
As I reported in last week’s newsletter, we are now able to receive enrolments from Weston. It
would be great if we could get some volunteers to drop off Open Day flyers into all our intake
suburbs, especially newly obtained Weston. If everyone takes a street (and some generous
people have taken a lot more than that) we will cover our intake areas in no time. You may
even see me and other staff members beating the pavement during the holidays!
Soccer Carnival
It was fabulous to see our boys and girls at the Catholic Schools Soccer carnival on Sunday. It
was a glorious day and every child I asked said they were having a great time. A big thank-you
to all the parents, team managers and coaches who made the day possible as well as Mr
Stephens for coordinating teams and entry information.
Working Bee Sunday 2nd April 9am-12pm– Central Courtyard
A final reminder for the Working Bee this weekend. Please see the schedule outlined further in
this newsletter. There will be a BBQ provided by St Vincent de Paul. WE NEED YOU!!!!! Even if you
can only spare an hour or two, please come along and give a hand.
Please RSVP by emailing your availability to Paul Urbaniak on – [email protected]
One thing to Keep, Change and Add
Earlier in the term I sent a survey out for one thing that people might like to keep, change or add
to improve our school. As a result, I will be posting in the newsletter one thing from each
category that the school is looking at. The issues I have chosen will have contained a common
thread from the received surveys. Unfortunately, we can’t keep, add or delete things from
individual responses.
Keep – The Reading Rockets program.
Learning Support do an amazing job with this program and it is certainly something we plan to
always continue.
Stop – The sometimes poor presentation of our school grounds.
The Eager Environmentalists are keen for our playground to be clean. We are in discourse with
the children about an Environment Award to motivate all the children to keep our playground
tidy.
The talk around the school is very positive. Mostly about what we are currently doing and where
we are heading.
Introduce – Further immersion of Italian.
Sounds like a great idea. We will be talking with staff and will discuss things such as school
signage, cultural items and maybe guest visits to increase the profile of Italian in our school.

Baby News
Congratulations to the Taflaga family (Lucia 1/2JB) on the safe arrival of baby Novak last Friday.
School Wide Positive Behaviours
The children are embracing our new program. I have seen dozens and dozens of children exchanging yellow
tokens for red. In fact, John Paul in 5/6 is about to move onto the blue token level. At this rate he will be in my
office next term being treated to lunch.
Farewell
Today we farewell the Longford family (Skye 1/2B and Angus 3/4C) from SJV. We wish them all the best at their
new school. A big thanks to Steve and Mary who took an active role in their children’s learning and the life of our
school community.
BBQ Wheels
A big thank-you to Lindsay Collison, grandfather to Georgia, Luca and Patrick, who is attaching wheels to our two
BBQ’s. This will take them from ‘good to awesome’ as they will be easy to move anywhere around the school.
Have an amazing weekend and God bless.
Peter Rodda
Principal
Just a reminder that the new date for our Term 2 start will now be
Wednesday 26 April.
Don’t forget to turn
your clocks BACK one
hour.
Reading is Funny Day – 1 April 2017 April Fool’s Day is a perfect day to show your kids that reading can be
both funny and fun. If you have ever tried and failed at getting your child
to put down the video games and pick up a book, this might be the day for
you! Reading is Funny Day aims to show children that reading can be just
as fun as more modern entertainment, whether it be with jokes, riddles or
funny stories.
Take the opportunity on this day to show your children how fun reading
can be. Download riddles from the internet to get your children engaged,
go to the local library to check out a few funny books or even spend the
day making up funny stories of your own! Setting this day aside to
concentrate on having fun reading can be a real eye opener to the children
of today and may even encourage them to start to read on their own on
other days of the year!
Tennis Clinics The whole school have enjoyed Tennis lessons this term. Thanks to Joe and Rob from the Canberra School of Tennis. The clinic was made possible because of a grant from Schools Sport and funds from SJV’s Community Council. Mrs D’s ‘Thought of the Week….’

Catholic Schools’ Soccer Tournament Congratulations to all students who participated in the Catholic Schools’ Soccer Tournament last Sunday. It was a glorious day and everyone had loads of fun playing soccer and cheering on their friends. A very big thank you to all the parents and volunteers who helped organise the day.
South Weston Swimming Carnival Congratulations to all students who represented St John Vianney’s Primary at the South Weston Swimming Carnival at the AIS on Thursday. All competitors swam their best and made SJV proud. Thank you to all the parents who were able to assist throughout the day.

John 11: 1 - 45
Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead The context for this Sunday’s Gospel reading is that there has been
growing animosity from the Jewish leaders toward Jesus. The people have
been pressing Jesus to declare if he is the Messiah. Jesus tells them to look
to His works, which testify to His coming from God. Many do not believe
Jesus and some try to stone Him for blasphemy. Mary and Martha, the
sisters of Lazarus, send word to Jesus that his friend is ill. When Jesus
arrives two days later, a weeping Martha meets Jesus. Martha remains
confident that God will do whatever Jesus asks. Martha affirms her belief
that there will be a resurrection of the dead in the last days. Then Martha's
sister, Mary, comes to Jesus with the same confidence, saying that Jesus
could have cured Lazarus. Jesus asks to be brought to Lazarus's tomb
where He prays and calls Lazarus out from the tomb. At this sign, many come to believe in Jesus, but others
take word of the miracle to the Jewish authorities, who begin their plans for Jesus' death.
HOLY WEEK CELEBRATIONS During Week 10 we will be celebrating Holy Week. Holy Week recalls the events surrounding the Suffering,
Death, and Resurrection of Jesus. Parent and carers are welcome to join us for these very important events in
the Church’s liturgical year.
ANZAC DAY
Year 3/4C will be leading us in our ANZAC Day Prayer
Celebration on the first day of Term 2 (26th of April at
2:30pm). We would like to invite all of our school community
to come to this important celebration so we can remember all
those who fought and died protecting our country. We also
welcome all serving and ex-serving ADF and Foreign Military
personal and ask that they wear their uniform to this
celebration.
Have a great weekend.

Happy Birthday Henry L
Welcome to Lucy N who has started at the ELC in the Joeys class.
This week the Joeys completed their cross country run with the
cheering support of their year 5L buddies. Today the fruit shop
looked different and it took us a while to work out what had
changed. With the help of Ms Thomas we worked out that the fruit
and vegetables were displayed in patterns. A huge thank you to
the St Jude’s music teacher Leanne Thomas for spending
Wednesday afternoon with us. We enjoyed learning and singing
new songs and loved her ukulele.
