2011 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen - 4th December - McCallum Park

2011 A very busy year...

Yes, 2011 is coming to a close very quickly and is difficult to see where all the time went and where all the jobs you have to didn‘t get done. Well we had a very busy start to the year organising the Na-

tional Bug-In at Easter in Toodyay, followed by the 2011 Road Trip throughout the South West immediately after.

For everybody that worked so hard it was very rewarding to see it go off so successfully, while those that attended en-joyed themselves immensely and no doubt will be looking forward to future Bug-Ins, not only in WA but around Austral-ia.

Keep a look out as there some members like me already committed to attend the SA Bug-In in 2012 and there maybe some group travel arrangements made. Of course forward any questions you have ant time.

2011 Shannons Day of the Volkswagen

Closing out a very busy year will be our annual VW get together. This is coming together at a rate of knots with the committee busy organising the venue, food & drinks, entertainment and cars on show.

This year we have moved to McCallum Park just off Canning Highway, not far down the road from where we were last year...just south of the Causeway. Still only $10 to put your car on show and free if you just want to come and have a look. The more cars the merrier, and the more variation the better also. It would be good to get some other VW affiliates there this year.

Also to remember that this year is the 50th Anniversary of the VW Type 3...extra trophies are being presented for this category this year and we would like to see as many as possible on show.

We hope to have all the results and photos in the December magazine...see you all there1

Shell sets world record for fuel effi-

ciency lesson Thousands of motorists across Europe and Asia helped Shell set a new world record for the "largest fuel efficiency lesson" at the weekend.

Nine cities staged simultaneous train-ing sessions in which motorists were able to learn how to save fuel and cut their driving costs.

A total of 3,243 people participated in the lessons which took place in the UK, Denmark, Turkey, Philippines, Thai-land, Hong Kong, Netherlands, Germa-ny and Malaysia.

The largest turnout came in Malaysia, where 1,225 participants were in at-tendance at the 1Utama shopping cen-tre in Selangor.

In Valkenburg, Shell worked with the classic VW Beetle owners club to given them information about how they could make their classic cars run more effi-ciently.

After the lesson the Beetle owners then went on a driving challenge around the local area to put what they'd learnt to the test and see who could drive in the most fuel efficient way.

Over 200 drivers took part in UK leg of the attempt which was held near Tower Bridge in London and was hosted by TV motoring expert Quentin Willson and TV presenter Konnie Huq.

Amarilis Whitty, Guinness World Rec-ords adjudicator, said of the achieve-

ment: "As world record attempts go, this is one of the most informative I've witnessed.

"Now more than ever, it's a hugely im-portant topic for families and motorists across the world. I can now confirm that 204 people in the UK were present and attentive for the full 30-minute les-son on fuel saving."

Volkswagen Passat Wagon

V6 4-motion When I realised that a new Volkswagen Passat Wagon was avail-able to do an appraisal – because no one else wanted it, the only real inter-est for me, was to see what improve-ments had been made. Mind you, the last Passat I tested was the R36 and I was on such a high when it had to be returned, that I thought any subse-quent appraisal, would leave me feel-ing flat.

Anyway, when I went to pick up the latest Passat, it was mentioned to me that it was a bit thirsty and upon seek-ing clarification, was told it was the V6 FSI Highline, meaning it was the 3.6l with 4Motion with 220kw available un-der foot. The other 2 variants available in the range are the 1.8l 118kw TSI

and the 2.0l 125kw TDi. It also comes in Sedan and Bluemotion. So, maybe I would enjoy it after all. It wasn‘t an R36, but it had all wheel drive, leather seats, 6 stack CD, electric front seats, adaptive chassis control (sport / nor-mal/ comfort) and a lot of the niceties that VW stacks into all their cars as standard. But you can option Satnav, sun roof or self parking (parallel and right angle) adaptive cruise control, as well as lane assist (warns of cars in your blind spots) and will also give you visual and acoustic warnings if you are heading for the rear end of a car in front. It doesn‘t seem too far away be-fore our cars will take us home all by themselves. Something that surprised me however, was that although it had already done 8000klm, some of the niceties like the tilting kerbside mirror when in reverse had not appeared to have been set up for or by previous journalists.

Well, the weekend saw clear sunny skies and temperatures creeping to-wards 30c, so on the Sunday, we

joined the VW Club‘s Anniversary Cruise through the hills east of Perth. Travelling in a convoy isn‘t often done well by people who tend to try to keep up with the car in front, rather than staying back with the car behind you. This convoy was no different and there was a lot of stop start driving. The Passat was very thirsty as the 6 speed DSG hunted mainly between 3rd and 4th, with some 5th gear. By the end of the 100klm day trip it averaged 13.2l/100klm.

On Monday we had a luncheon ap-pointment in Bunbury, so I got the credit card out and topped up the 70 litre tank. The run down the Forrest Highway 150klm to Bunbury was much more economical, returning

8.3l/100klm. We called into Bunbury Volkswagen and met the New Vehicles sales Manager – Wessel van Aardt, who had a good range of vehicles in-cluding a the new Jetta, Passat CC, Polo and a good range of Golfs, as well as a few Amarok‘s overflowing into the next yard.

Business was done and we headed to Busselton for the night. The return journey home the next day was via the inland road to Pinjarra. On the open road the Passat is a star performer. I don‘t think I‘ve spent less time passing trucks and setting the adaptive chassis control ―smoothed‖ out the road.

No car is perfect and I did find one BIG problem. In the wagon as in other VW models, there is a 12 volt plug. So we loaded up the car fridge to take our own supplies. The fridge kept chilly cold. But, with our 50l car fridge in the back, we could not pull back the secu-rity screen over the cargo area, so everything else was exposed not only to prying eyes, but also the sun. There was a full spare, but a 5mm lower car-go floor would have resolved it. I‘d also like to see some brighter colours.

Overall this particular model is not a city car, but is a fantastic comfortable tourer that returns excellent economy, with all the power under foot you will need.

My ultimate car for some time has been the Audi S6 Avante (wagon) and this Passat with a few options would go close to it Why? Because the lady of the house can drive the children to school before doing the weekly shop-ping or heading for a coffee with girl-friends, it has the power to pull a small van or trailer on holidays, it has heaps of cargo space, albeit security with a car fridge in the back, has all wheel drive and all the safety features, is not out of place in the executive car park and you can drive it like you stole it.

With globalisation leading to the reduc-tion of models around the world though, the V6 FSI Passat Wagon will no doubt become a rare breed.

Thank you to Volkswagen Australia for the use of the Press Car for our Road test.

Greetings to

all Bug-Inners! As President of the VW Club of SA, I have great pleasure in conveying to you all the first official details for the 2012 Bug-In. We expect this Bug-In will be as enjoyable as all previous Bug-Ins and are working hard to that end result. The event is based around the Aldinga Beach, Port Willunga and McLaren Vale areas which are less than an hour‘s drive south of Adelaide.

After the traditional Registration after-noon/evening at the Port Willunga Tourist Park, we will be conducting the Show ‗n‘ Shine at a magnificent venue previously known as McLarens on the Lake, now Serafino‘s. It has a large beautifully manicured grassed area under gum trees and is located a cou-ple of minutes from McLaren Vale. Early afternoon we have arranged a convoy to Woodstock Winery, followed by a visit to a rose farm (both located nearby) and then a pleasant drive through part of the Fleurieu Peninsula taking in Myponga Dam and the south-ern beaches area. Saturday evening is free, but we will be able to provide you with a few choices if you wish to go out for a meal.

Sunday‘s motorsport will be held at the Tailem Bend Motorsport Park, which is approx. an hour away. We feel it will be worth the trip as the complex has the ability for us to have the traditional Motorkhana, a couple of courses for Khanacross AND a drag strip! We haven‘t finalised the details yet, but we think we can keep people busy and cater for all tastes. Of course, for those of you who aren‘t into the motorsport, we have organised a bus trip to the Goolwa/Victor Harbor area which will include a look at the Murray River mouth on Hindmarsh Island.

Sunday‘s Presentation Dinner will be held at Serafino‘s in our own private room. The menu looks very inviting and I‘m sure we‘ll enjoy the evening relating stories from the weekend and congratulating trophy winners.

As Easter draws to a close, we have arranged a tour with a difference for

those people who wish to stay for a while. The difference is we intend to include some of the highlights of our city as well as near country locations. Check out the itinerary below for fur-ther details.

More information, including costs, will follow soon.

$250 as an incentive to VW Club WA Members who drive to their FIRST

INTERSTATE BUG-IN...

As most of us know, Rod‘s wife and Kaitlyn‘s mother Janet, unexpectedly died in July 2008. It was 12 months to the day after buying her new 2007 Jet-ta Tdi, that Janet went to hospital for a procedure that is carried out on a regu-lar basis, but sadly, she had a stroke after the operation. Janet, Rod and Kaitlyn have attended a number of Bug-Ins as a family and have always been heavily involved every time the Bug-In has been held in WA since 1975.

In 2009, Rod drove the Jetta 3500klm to the Bendigo Bug-In with the aim of getting there on 3 tanks of diesel. It meant going sub 5 litres per 100klm, but a headwind for the first day and a half prevented the target being reached. But he did manage an aver-age of 5.2l/100klm, with the best being 4.8l/100klm between Mildura and Ben-digo, plus doing the 1035klm from Pt Augusta to Mildura on a single 55 litre tank. The journey was achieved for just under $250.

On that basis, Rod and Kaitlyn have offered $250 as an incentive to mem-bers who drive to their 1st interstate Bug-In. The offer will be available each year until the Bug-In is next hosted in WA and will be distributed as decided by Rod and/or Kaitlyn after sugges-tions from the committee.

Please let the Club know if you are going or thinking about going, espe-cially if it is at least one way by road...THE GREAT ROAD TRIP!

The New

Tiguan

Combining the Versatility of an SUV

with the Agility of Sports Cars.

A fresh-faced, economical SUV

packed with advanced technologies

The new Volkswagen Tiguan is here. Following the lead of its big brother the second generation Touareg, the new Tiguan offers unparalleled safety, com-fort, design and state-of-the-art tech-nology, all in one compact SUV.

The new Tiguan features an array of enhanced styling as is evident across the entire Volkswagen range. Drawing from Volkswagen‘s specialised design DNA, the new Tiguan features domi-nate horizontal lines on the front grille. At the rear, new two-part light clusters give the Tiguan its distinct appear-ance. Again, similar to those of the Touareg, they form an ‗L‘ shape, while the lower border of the lights also fol-lows a horizontal geometry.

Four engines are available across the Tiguan range; three petrol engines and one diesel engine. Petrol engines in-clude a twincharged 1.4-litre TSI with 118 kW, a 2.0-litre TSI with 132 kW and a 2.0-litre TSI with 155 kW. De-spite the high power output, CO2 emissions have remained surprisingly low.

The diesel variant is even more im-pressive. The 2.0-litre TDI engine pro-vides 103 kW of power and achieves - for an SUV - the remarkably low com-bined fuel consumption figure of just 6.0 litres per 100 km for the manual model.

The Tiguan‘s 1.4-litre TSI engine, pow-ered by 118 kW will be available in two-wheel drive, attracting customers who are looking for a stylish yet economical city SUV in an affordable package. For customers wanting the added versatili-ty and the option to venture off the beaten track, the rest of the range (103TDI, 132TSI, 155TSI) feature

Volkswagen‘s innovative 4MOTION all-wheel drive as standard.

The Tiguan 118TSI is matched with a 6-speed manual transmission, whilst the 103TDI can be equipped with ei-ther a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG transmission. The Tiguan 132TSI is paired with both 6-speed manual and 7-speed DSG transmissions, while the 155TSI Tiguan is available with a 7-speed DSG transmission only.

Both the 103TDI and the 118TSI with two-wheel drive incorporates BlueMo-tion Technology making them both incredibly environmentally friendly and economical. BlueMotion Technologies includes Volkswagen‘s impressive Start/Stop system, Brake Energy Re-cuperation and the revolutionary Coasting Function (on 103TDI DSG only) offering even further fuel saving technology and thus, lowing emis-sions.

As with every Volkswagen, the Tiguan provides high passenger safety with daytime driving lights, six airbags (front, front side and curtain airbags), and safety optimised front head re-straints as standard. The new Tiguan also features Volkswagen‘s advance technologies including Anti-lock Brak-ing System (ABS), Auto Hold function, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-

Here are some sample plates already on VW

Club Member vehicles.

We have Orders coming in...

Well since we ran this article in August we have already ordered 3 sets of club plates and two of these are now ready for their member‘s vehicles.

We have an interest in another 3 sets, with members currently making up their minds on what they would like on their plates.

Time is running out, but just to refresh your memories we have re-run the article again for you...

End of VW Club Plates ?

About 9 years ago the club came up with the concept of having its own identifying club plates. Since then the

club has sold a number of plates to members and they are proudly dis-played on their cars.

We have now received a letter from the Department of Transport (Government of WA) that they intend to retire our club plates because of falling sales.

DPI has introduced a minimum sales requirement of ten (10) sets of plates per annum.

Unfortunately one of the reasons for falling sales is the continual price hikes by the department. Currently priced at $315 per set of plates.

At present the club has gained an ex-tension of time to be able to give you, our club members at least one more

chance to buy our club plates.

If we sell enough plates we may be able to stop the retirement al-together.

We need to sell 10 sets of club plates by 4th December...Shannons 2011 Day of the Volkswagen...the last day for sales...maybe!

The fate of the VW Club plates is now with you -

our members!

In an effort to make it easier for the club members to afford our club plates,

the club has decided to discount the plates to $300 per set…yes

you save $15 per set.

This special price also expires on the 4th December...Shannons 2011 Day of the Volkswagen.

This is less than what the plates cost the club, we cannot make them any cheaper.

You can contact the club at any time for an application form and information sheet or just to discuss your ideas.

2011 Awards Two Volkswagen Golfs Claim Victory in Wheels Magazine’s 2011

Gold Star Value Awards

The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion and Golf GTI claimed victory in the recent-ly announced Wheels magazine‘s 2011 Gold Star Value Award.

The Golf BlueMotion lead in the ‗Sedan/hatch $25K - $31K‘ category and was a standout in its retained val-ue – a best-in-class figure of 64 per-cent after three years.

The Golf GTI added another accolade taking out first place in the ‗Compact Performance under $75K‘ category. Here few of the Golf GTI‘s competitors could top the sporty Golf‘s fuel econo-my figures or match its 63-percent-three year resale.

Anke Koeckler, managing director of Volkswagen Group Australia, com-mented: ‗We are very proud to see our Golf range taking out two awards in this

year‘s Wheels Gold Star Awards.‘

‗Our multi-award winning Golf GTI continues to outshine its competitors for its everyday capabilities and per-formance, whilst the Golf BlueMotion proves that Volkswagen‘s fuel efficient BlueMotion technology is indeed value for money.

Vehicles in 18 different categories ranging from light vehicles under $20K to luxury cars valued up to $150K were judged across a range of criteria including warranty, fuel economy, pur-chase price, depreciation, insurance costs, and service schedules and pric-es.

Volkswagen

up!Load The Small Car is Very Large Indeed!

The up!, the smallest new Volkswagen, is a very spacious car. To prove this thesis, employees at Volkswagen Communications made an attempt at an unofficial world rec-ord. The results: not only is it possible for four people to sit comfortably in the new up! in normal use – if one really tries hard, many more people can fit into the car: 15 women and one man squeezed themselves into its interior spaces. It was not all that comfortable any more, we must admit!

Two in the boot, one on the dash-board, seven on the rear bench, four on the front seats, two in the footwells – then the boot lid and doors were shut, and the windows were closed. A world record! 16 people in the new up!. In this record attempt, the goal was not so much comfort as it was to have a lot of fun.

And that is why such record attempts have a long tradition: back in the 1950s it was extremely popular to cram as many people as possible into

a telephone booth – which in those days was still a very easy to find ob-ject.

But what is a telephone booth com-pared to a VW Beetle? At a car meet in Australia, 17 Beetle friends sponta-neously decided to squeeze into this Volkswagen icon. In 2010, 20 people – who obviously had extremely high lev-els of pain tolerance – raised the bar with a record in Wilmore, Kentucky (USA), which landed them in the Guin-ness World Records.

Naturally, attempts were also made in the successor model. In January 2001, a record 27 students from the USA squeezed into a New Beetle.

And now, in 2011, we have the up! – one for all! Well, it was good for at least 16 on our first try. At 3.54 metres long and 1.64 metres wide, the up! is one of the smallest four-seat cars. Af-ter its market launch in 2012, custom-ers can set their own records.

First Outing for Polo R

WRC Volkswagen in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC)

Volkswagen has successfully started the tests with the new Polo R WRC. Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Volkswagen Board of Management for Technology, and the two-time World Rally Champion and ―Dakar‖ winner Carlos Sainz (Spain) completed the first test kilometres without any problems in the vine-yards of Veldenz near Trier, the location that nor-mally plays host to the ADAC Rallye Deutsch-land. Prior to competing in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) from 2013 onward, Volkswagen will intensive-ly test and continue to de-velop the four wheel drive vehicle that delivers an output of about 300 HP.

―The first test with the new Polo R WRC is a special

moment and marks an important mile-stone in the preparations for our entry in the World Rally Championship,‖ comments Dr Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management for the Develop-ment Division. ―We‘re well on schedule and are now able to start testing our concepts and developments in reality. The WRC is the top category in rally sport and a great challenge for the team, the drivers and the technology. We‘re taking on this challenge and will be making efficient use of the time be-fore we start into our first competition.‖

―The first Polo represents a preliminary stage of the subsequent rally car and during the upcoming months will serve as a test vehicle for various compo-nents such as engines, gearboxes or suspension parts. The findings ob-tained in these tests will be directly fed into the first thorough-bred Polo R WRC,‖ explains Volkswagen Motor-sport Director Kris Nissen. ―Next year we‘ll be running an extensive testing programme on tarmac, gravel, mud and snow in order to prepare our-selves for the 2013 season as best we

can.‖

On the first test day Dr Ulrich Hacken-berg and Carlos Sainz, both with co-driver Timo Gottschalk (Rheinsberg, Germany) at their side, drove some 100 kilometres on the 2.8-kilometre tarmac circuit. An initial functional test was followed by tuning and set-up work on the engine and the suspen-sion, all of which was performed with-out any problems. ―I immensely enjoy being involved in the development and testing of the new Polo R WRC – and having the privilege of driving the first kilometres is naturally a great honour,‖ says Carlos Sainz. ―The car is still in an early stage but already feels very good. For the whole team, whether engineers, mechanics or drivers, it‘s very important to get to know the first real car as early as possible and to test and continue to develop it.‖

In parallel to the tests with the Polo R WRC Volkswagen is continuing its trial runs in the World Rally Championship. Next week the German Sepp Wiegand with Dakar winner Timo Gottschalk as co-driver and the Dutchman Kevin Ab-

bring with co-driver Lara Vanneste will be com-peting in the Great Brit-ain Rally in Wales (10–13 November).

At the fourth WRC test run this year the Volkswagen factory team is again fielding two Fabia cars of the Group‘s ŠKODA brand in order to evaluate tal-ents and gather valuable experiences with the team at this famous gravel rally.

BARBAGALLO RACEWAY

14-16 OCT 2011

By FVAWA Organising Committee

Competitors started to arrive early for this year‘s Nation-als. Steve Butcher towed the Team Stinger trailer from NSW with both his and Dylan Thomas‘ cars, arriving two weeks before the event. Steve took his 1200 out for practice the Saturday before the event and promptly chewed a piston. With a to-tal engine rebuild at Chris Scoble‘s workshop, he cer-tainly put the hours in to get ready. Chris Reynolds also brought two cars, Daniel‘s Sabre and Morgan Free-mantle‘s Astec. The Check-mate and Jacer from the Porter family arrived early in the week and the Gretgrix brothers from Victoria towed the GRD10 over the Nullar-bor and borrowed two Ma-ko‘s from WA‘s Neil McLay.

The nine ‗Eastern States‘

entries were supported by 22 WA entries and with four-teen 1600s and seventeen 1200s we were set for prac-tice on 14th October.

Friday was a cost free prac-tice with six 20 minute ses-sions followed by a dedicat-ed hour for Formula Vee only. The support from alco-holthinkagain was very wel-come and the bunting and flags had turned the pit area into a carnival of race cars. With a sausage sizzle at McCracken House after-

wards, the weekend had got off to a good start; the local boys were explaining to the visitors (or not telling them) how to take Kolb corner, over a beer and a snag.

Saturday started with sepa-rate practice sessions for 1600s and 1200s and saw the fastest times of the weekend. Daniel Reynolds dominated with a lap record beating 1.07.6722 but local David Campbell (DC) showed what a session on the dyno and new tyres can

do by recording a 1.08.2329, arguably the fastest time set by a WA driver on this track. Talking tyres, in order to keep the costs down, the organisers had imposed a ‗one set of tyres only from qualifying‘ rule, which was a concern but proved to be justified by Sunday afternoon. The tyres had lasted well after qualify-ing, three races, a warm up on Sunday and a final.

Thanks to Stuart Kostera and his dad for being there all three days and fitting 33 sets of tyres. Steve Butcher was running his new engine in (?) by setting a time one second faster than anyone else in the 1200s, although local Bruce Welsh was keeping his cards close to his chest by not going out in his Jacer.

Qualifying one was at 1130 for the 1600s and noon for the 1200s with fine weather and a track temperature of 31 deg C. Five 1600s were

in the 1.08s with pole going to Daniel, second to Ben Porter and third to Dylan Thomas. DC managed fourth, 0.04 behind Dylan, and Bruce Allen did an ex-cellent job by putting his borrowed Ajay on fifth. Bruce had never driven this car before Friday and it had done next to no racing this year. In 1200s, Butcha‘s engine was obviously well run in as he has pole on 1.12.3154, Steve Williams did an exceptional job to get second in his 25 year old Daverick and Derek Brom-lewe showed he was a con-tender by getting third in his Elfin Crusader. Rod Lisson set his fastest ever time to get fifth but Andy Stevens only managed one lap with gearbox issues. The officials let him set qualifying times on the Sunday morning warm up to prove his worth and he was allowed to race later that day.

For Race 1 the weather was still good with high level cloud and the track was no warmer, staying around 31 deg C for the rest of the weekend. Daniel led from start to finish with Ben, Dyl-an, DC and local hotshot Jacob Parson in his Jacer all fighting for positions.

Bruce Allen departed on Kolb corner on the second lap rather than be part of a crash and Dion Gretgrix only managed 5 laps. Daniel won by six seconds with the pack behind fighting it out to the last corner. DC held second place down the hill into Ford Fast Brake corner and Ben Porter had the speed to overtake around the outside of the bend. Ben‘s front wheels lost grip and he

slid wide, outside the kerb dividing the track and the pit lane. Ben kept his foot in and rejoined the track over the kerb to finish third be-hind DC and in front of Dyl-an. The Clerk of Course did not like this and the CAMS stewards later excluded Ben from this race, and put him at the back of the grid for race 2 whilst lightening his

wallet.

The 1200s were having some great battles through-out the field with some going onto the grass to get through the pack. The stand out was Nordine El Hafidoun who finished third using an engine borrowed from Bruce Welsh, who finished second after a tough fight with the winner, Butcha. There was action everywhere with Ne-ville Bettridge setting great times and Liam Gretgrix jumping from a 1600 into a 1200 to finish seventh.

That was it for the Saturday, time for a few rebuilds at Gerry Prosser‘s workshop for three cars. Dylan Thom-as and DC compared notes at 6 am the next morning at DC‘s house, both of them had been up since 3 am

trying to work out how to catch Daniel.

Sunday was again a fine day with temperatures in the high 20s and track temps of 30. Race 2 for 1600s started at 1015 after an earlier warm up session, and Dan-iel dominated again. Ben Porter made it from the back of the grid to seventh on lap 1, fourth on lap 2 and se-cond by lap 3. DC dropped back to battle with Cameron Edwards in his Ajay, Jacob and Ben Riley in his Jacer – it was like a normal WA round except for the three visitors ahead. Bruce Allen had made it from the back to seventh by the flag and Mor-gan Freemantle was enjoy-ing his return to the track after several years away from WA and finished ninth. Ben Riley had carburettor issues and dropped back and Stewart Burns had tech-nical issues and did not fin-ish. Bruce Welsh managed to spin his 1200 yet finished eighth, Butcha won again from Bromlewe, Williams and El Hafidoun. David Gourbould showed promise by finishing fifth ahead of hard charging Rod Lisson and Neville Bettridge. Allan Yeo (Vixen) and James McDonald (Elfin) are related and they raced well to a family finish 0.06 secs apart, Allan just getting his nose ahead.

Race 3, at 1145, was full of incident; the track had slowed and there was some sand blown onto the track. DC had clutch problems, jumped the start and could not easily select fourth. He tried to do the same as Ben Porter had done around the outside of Ford corner but lost grip on the sand on the outside and spun. With the one minute penalty for the start and the spin, he fin-ished last. Cameron Ed-wards showed his true form, despite brake issues and finished fourth ahead of lo-cals Parsons, Riley and Al-len; with Dion Gretgrix, Leigh Porter, Morgan Free-mantle and Liam Gretgrix following. Locals Campbell Gow (Stinger) and Stewart Burns (Aurora) were next. The first three finished in an unfamiliar order, Porter, Reynolds then Thomas. The two leaders had broken away and had their own bat-tle with Ben just getting his nose ahead on the last lap to win by 0.037 secs.

Butcha had won the 1200s

but not without a considera-ble fight with Bruce Welsh and Derek Bromlewe. These three were swapping posi-tions corner for corner, all three of them leading at one stage. Rod Lisson pushed through to fourth, Steve Wil-liams was fifth after fixing his earlier rocker issues, James McDonald charged into sixth and earned him-self the 1200 Charger of the Event award, and Bettridge got the better of Gorbould (Sabre). Locals John Cous-ins (Ribuck), Robert Lambe (Ribuck), Deni Razmovski (Elfin) and Brett Scarey

(Elfin) were all providing great entertainment with their constant position swap-ping and three abreast rac-ing. Andy Stevens was en-joying a trouble free run at last and finished his first ever Formula Vee race. El Hafidoun unfortunately re-tired on lap 4 with engine issues, and it was a loner from Bruce Welsh

Controversy hit the 1600s after race three. The scruti-neers deemed cars 2, 17 and 9 to be below the re-quired ride height and re-ported the matter to the

Clerk of Course. The com-petitors were summoned to the race office and all three contested the decision to exclude them from race three results and a $700 fine. Because of this, their finish positions in race three were not removed and were used with races one and two to decide their grid position for the final. Not the best situation and the outcome of the inquiry is still to be de-cided.

The 1600 final was a 12 lap marathon and was dominat-

ed by Daniel Reynolds; and he was the worthy winner of the 1600 National Chal-lenge. Thomas was second for the first four laps but Por-ter snuck past and claimed the runner up spot ahead of Thomas. Fourth was Ed-wards, then Parsons, and sixth was DC who still had gear selection issues and had dropped back from fourth. All cars stopped on the start/finish line where awards and sashes were presented before all cars returned to parc freme for checking.

The 1200 final was a spec-tacle with battles happening throughout the field; groups of seven cars all entering corners together and sur-prisingly, no one was hurt and no cars got damaged. The three front runners were in a class of their own. Butcha, Welsh and Brom-lewe were again swapping the lead regularly so it all came down to the last lap,

and indeed the last corner. Bromlewe‘s engine had cooked itself with three laps to go as the fan belt had come off so he was a few lengths behind the other two into the last corner. Butcha defended on the inside and Welsh had the lead but on the outside. Both committed to the corner like the Nation-als depended on it, which it did. Unfortunately they had a coming together which resulted Butcha‘s nose cone coming off and Welsh‘s car spinning off the track. Nei-ther of them had lifted off the throttle and both of them described it as a racing inci-dent. They congratulated each other on the finish line

after the race before the presentations – no hard feelings. The awards were presented on the start/finish line again and reaffirmed that evening at the dinner held in Hillarys Boat Har-bour. Unfortunately, unbe-known to anyone who was racing, the Clerk of Course did not like what happened on the last corner and he did not tell any on the drivers until 1100 the next day that Butcha had been excluded and fined for dangerous driving forcing another car off the track. Extremely bad timing by the officials, which has led to a letter to CAMS form FVAWA asking them to explain the rules regarding

when results are declared final, and the officials deci-sions and timing of those decisions. Butcha was dev-astated as he started the long drive back to NSW but bounced back during the journey to return to his usual happy self. Tops marks to Steve Butcher – a true gen-tleman. Despite the ailing engine, Derek Bromlewe was awarded first place on the Monday afternoon. Strangely the decision was announced by the Drivers Liaison Officer on a cha-troom webpage rather than officially on the WASCC web page or Natsoft

A special mention must go to Andrew Calvert. His tow car blew a water pump on the way to the track so he arrived with tow car and race car on the back of a tow truck and took part in the racing. He was at the track until gone 11 on Satur-

day evening fixing the pump and did not have the best of days racing. If there was an award for persistence, An-drew would get it.

Mia Cucina restaurant pro-vided a great venue with beautiful views over Hillarys Boat Harbour, great food, fantastic music and the op-portunity to review the in car footage from the weekend on a screen. FVAWA Presi-dent Derek Burns presented the awards: DC got the hard

charger award for 1600s and Daniel (Chris) Reynolds got the best presented car award.

The 1200 awards were obvi-ously changed the next day so they will be presented again at the FVAWA dinner on 18 Nov 11.

FVAWA would like to thank all competitors and helpers, particularly those who trav-elled the full width of the country to be in WA.

The organising team would also like to thank again the

WA Government through alcoholthinkagain for spon-soring the event.

We look forward to Wake-field Park for the 2012 Na-tionals and just hope that next year officialdom does not get in the way of a great weekend of racing and so-cialising.

More than a pinch of salt…

The 2012 Event

Four days on the salt at Lake Gaird-ner, South Australia chasing elusive land speed records including the title of the world‘s fastest 36 HP Beetle in the 36HP Challenge.

Ratmuller Racing will be entering 5 vehicles under their banner for the event including 4 air cooled VWs to-gether with a 2011 Golf R Four Motion sedan. See ―Classes ― for vehicle de-tails.

Our Involvement

At this stage there are three overseas visitors- Burly Burlile, the 36 HP Chal-lenge guru and event founder, Todd Penn from Canada and Rick Herity. Both Todd and Rick are expected to run in one of the Ratmuller Racing vehicles- a 36 hp 1975 Beetle (the ―Town Bike‖).

The annual event at Bonneville was completed in August and one out-standing effort was the 2011 Skoda Octavia (Production class) achieving an almost unbelievable 227 mph or 366 kph.

This production vehicle ran a heavily modified forced induction 2.0 litre mo-tor putting out over 600 bhp with a 26 to 28 boost. There were 28 VWs run-ning at Bonneville at the World of Speed event in September, the largest number ever.

Sponsorship

With the event cancellation in March this year Ratmuller Racing was unable to give anything back to our sponsors for this year. Team Principal, Steve Muller has taken a decision to ensure the team generates payback for the 2011 sponsors without seeking addi-tional support.

The Team

Critical to a successful event is the support team and the Ratmuller Rac-ing Team is no different. There is a huge amount of experience across various aspects including mechanical, driving, timing, pit area control, video, promotion, signage, stickering, admin-istrative, financial and general support. Anyone else who gets involved with the team can expect to have some level of responsibility as well.

The logistics of just getting the 5 vehi-cles the 1600km to Lake Gairdner is a huge task in itself so everyone needs to work together to ensure the best outcomes. Volks Culture website is at http://www.volksculture.com/
