HE '94 editors have picked- up the "Technique" ax

dropped by '93, and thegrind has now begun inearnest. With the expe-rience of the past to "turn

the crank," and proper management, backedby the Institute at large, to direct the grinding, there would seem to be no reason why thecoming annual should not be able to chop itsway to the head of " Techniques." Perhapsit would be well at this early date to informthe Freshmen just what "Technique" is.

Every year ten or a dozen men are elected,in one way or another (generally "another,"however), by the Sophomore Class, as anEditorial Board. To them is confided thecollection and compounding of all that appearsin book form during the Junior year as "Tech-nique." This volume contains everything of;

interest to the student world-class histories,fiaternity matter, accounts of athletic meetings,various Institute and collegiate records, foot-ball and baseball statistics, course histories,register of students, descriptions of all social,musical, and literary organizations, andgrinds-all interspersed with appropriatesketches and full-page cuts. Thus "Tech-nique" is a large book, and is produced atgreat expense; but unless supported by thestudents as a whole, it must be a dismalfailure. No fifteen men in the Institute can,alone and unaided, successfully edit such abook as this Junior Annual should be. Theycould not possibly produce a book represent-ing the whole college. Failing in this, whatdoes "Technique" amount to? Its very ex-istence depends upon the removal of all classobstacles,-the suppression of that feelingwhich makes a man say, " Now, I have a goodgrind here, but I'm not going to give it to '94.,and let them get the benefit of it in their'Technique."' This is a false idea of whatthe book is,-not a class, not a society pub-lication, but an Institute periodical, in chargeof each Junior Class in succession. Institutemen understand what this means. It meansthat each and every one of you should doyour utmost to extend the fame of Technology;to let outsiders know that we have some life,some sociability, some athletics; that we arenot shut up here for the mere purpose of com-ing forth as Engineers, Chemists, Architects;that we know how to develop ourselves on thesocial side, the literary side. To do this, letevery man of you put aside ,that class hesita-tion, and contribute your grind, your sketch,your poem. "Technique" is an annual thateven now, in the eighth year of its existence,can put many, in fact most, college annualsin' the shade. We have the opportunities;

our Architectural Department and Depart-ment of General Studies should be able tocontribute sketches and poems equal to thoseof any college.

Several of the editors of last year have verykindly volunteered their assistance to thepresent Board. Mr. E. B. Bird, whoseartistic ability is so well known to the majorityof Tech. men, is doing all in his power to aidthe artists. Now it only remains for THE

TECH to urge the hearty co-operation of everyman. Watch the "Technique" bulletin inthe Rogers corridor, try to win some of theprizes offered by the Board, and we willguarantee a "Technique" of which all mayjustly be proud.

To THE EDITORS OF THE TECH:-

Your last issue contained a note on the difficultyTech.. men find in registering. Complaints of thesame nature having been made to me by studentswhom I afterward personally saw registered, permitme to say that the essential thing is for them to takeoath that they relinquish their former residence, anddeliberately and fully accept a residence in this city.Questions as to who pays their bills or where theypurpose residing after completing their studies areirrevelant and impertinent, save as they tend to bringout this fact, and are, I fear, sometimes put with theexpress object of taking advantage of their ignoranceof the law. I trust no Tech. man who resided in thiscity the first of last May and is otherwise qualified tovote will permit himself to be " bluffed." Any assist-ance he may ask will be cheerfully furnished at theRepublican State headquarters, No. 2-A BeaconStreet, a few doors below the Registrar of Voters, atNo. I2 Beacon, where registration is open until Octo-ber 25th. Now is the time to s register!

Very truly,BENJ. C. LANE, '87.

Don't be too hard on the Freshman; heknows much that you have forgotten.

Manley and Shepherd of last year's classare playing football on the West Roxburyteam.

The Junior Civils are surveying for the lo-cation of a railroad from Crescent Beach toWoodlawn Cemetery.

Horace Burrough, '93, has been in the cityon business for the past week. He refereedthe Holy Cross game.

merely a smoke without anything to drink."

The Civil Engineering Society is beginningto plan its work for the year. The first meet-ing will probably be held on Thursday even-ing the 20th.

For the instruction of many who have asked, and to whom many things are yet unfamiliar,we will say that there is no charge for waterin the lunch room.

A Freshman unfeelingly remarked thatTech. should station an organ grinder nearthe lunch room, in order to assist the fellowsby sympathetic motion.

First Soph.: "What locus were you tryingto run in Analyt. yesterday?"

Second Soph.: "What fellow do youmean?"

"Are you the man that has those $I4.30mechanical drawing instruments for sale?"was the salute Professor Faunce received atthe end of the first Freshman lecture.

First Soph.: "What a crusty fellow Tayloris."

Second Soph.: "Yes; but no wonder, sincehe's always on a loaf."

All of the Freshmen who have not bought$25 worth of books this year had better makeapplication to the secretary for a scholarship. It will be expensive to see them through.

The ignorant Sophs. in Course I. soonfound out what "Top. Drawing" meant onthe schedule after they had wearily draggedthemselves up the 114 steps to 51 Engineering.

Mr. B1-: "' Mein Bruder hat heuter einenStock verloren und einen Ring gefundend-'Translate, please."

Soph. (confidently): " My brother has lostto-day a sock and found a garter."

Mr. Bernard: "Study carefully for the nextlesson ' s'asseoir' and 'boire.' I want you tobecome very familiar with these." HilariousFreshman laughter, which it is unnecessary tosay was not understood by the instructor.

Sophomore in the lunch room: "There's nobutter."

Mrs. King: "Butter flies a day like this."Sophomore (tentatively): "No co-coons

about."Our readers will please not trouble about

the entomology of this joke, and suggestionsthat colored waiters might be an improvement,in one respect, are also uncalled for. "Liveand let live."

Beers, '96, was elected Captain of the Fresh-man Football Team, but resigned for lack ofthe time necessary to do justice to the position.Newell is Captain of '95's team, as Thomas isoccupied with the 'Varsity.

Some few '93 men have decided already to"quit the game," and are arranging tabularviews which include "heat"; we might addthat '94 had better begin and work on thissubject. It flunks more men than any otherstudy in the Junior year.

The Republican parade is coming about thelast of October or first of November! EveryTech. man, of whatever party, should layaside a dollar or two for a uniform. You willnever regret this money experded on the funof a lifetime. March, all of you, and letpeople know Tech is stirring!

Look out, Sophomores, or '96 will carry offthe honors this year! The Freshmen haveathletes among them of no mean order, andought to put up a strong football team. Notmuch is known about their baseball material, but some of their track athletes will be heardfrom in a way to surprise people. As for classspirit, '96 has started out well, and ought tostick to their cane in close order. Wait, andsee.

The Lounger's "I warranted-to-tick" clockseems to be out on tick those mornings whenit greets us at 9 A. Mi. with the score of twentyminutes to twelve. However, as soon as itbecomes accumstomed to the clock-like mna-chinery of the Institute it will probably keepup to time, thus sparing itself the wrath ofsome sleepy Sophomore wllo has been dozingaway the time in a sunny corner of Rogerssteps.

Mr. George Guppy, formerly of '93, has beenheard from, from Middletown, N. Y., wherehe has a remunerative position on the Ontarioand Western R. R. "It is only those of us"| Mr. Guppy writes, referring to THE TECH-,''who are struggling in the cold world fobr acrust of bread, who really appreciate thathigher class of literature which is, I believe,

I to be disseminated weekly this year. I shlalllook forward to my TECH each week withgreat interest."

Saturday, October 8th, '94 managed togather a quorum for its first class meetingof this year. After appointing a committee todraw up resolutions concerning the death ofJames Merlin Mead, of Chicago, who died dur-ing the summer, the "Technique" Board wasempowered to engage a photographer to take

the class photograph, which will be reproducedin "Technique." If possible, this picture willbe taken between October 17th and 25th.Due notice will be given in all the buildings, for the whole class must be "in it."

During a lecture on Physics by ProfessorCross, the assistant arose and made a bee linefor the other end of the platform, where' hesuddenly disappeared through a cabin-likearrangement on the floor, much to the bewil-derment of the inattentive Sophs. Muchspeculation went on as to what the cabinmight yield to inquisitive minds. It has sincetranspired that B-lk- p intends to bring anickel to the next lecture, drop it in the slot, and see the show, or at least hear the bandplay "Mary Green."

Ninety-three held a well-attended classmeeting on Saturday, October I5th, in RoomII. The following business was transacted.P. H. Thomas was elected sergeant-at-arms.F. H. Fay, Marvine Gorham, and H. W.Alden were elected on the Executive Com-mittee. F. W. Lord, C. Taintor, and H. W.Stanwood were elected on the Athletic Com-mittee. Mr. Richmond made a few state-ments in regard to the appointments of thecaptains for the parade, which were made bythe Republican Club. These nominations ofMr. Johnson and Mr. James were indorsed.Mr. James made a motion that two men fromeach course be appointed to get the names ofall who would parade. Mr. Bemis announcedthat a friend of the class had given $25 foruse in the parade. A committee of three wasappointed to make use of this money. Amotion was made to tender the regards ofthe class, through its president, to Mr. Fred.P. Emery, its former instructor. It wasdecided that the two companies elect theirown sub-officers after the companies wereformed. The sub;ect of registration was dis-cussed, and many ideas were aired as to thebest method of registering. Then the meet-ing adjourned.

IT has been a long and weary time since wewere last able to speak as confidently of our'Varsity eleven as its excellent work thus earlyin the season enables us to speak now. WVeare certainly justified in predictions that wehave hardly dared to make in several years. It seems as though the old problem of drawingout material had been solved at last, as aglance at the make-up of the present teamgoes to prove. Men who make the best sortof material have come forward, and the elevennow plays with nealy all of the "snap" andclearheadedness that characterized Tech'swork in the old championship days.

For this, great credit is due to the con-scientious, earnest and thoroughly competentwork of Captain Thomas; both as captain andquarter back, it would be hard to find a betterman-we would say impossible. Indeed, be-hind the line our team is as strong as we couldwish it. Dearborn is doing the best sort oftackling, and does almost as well with theball, while Rockwell is a most valuable addi-tion as a runner. He loses no time in gettingstarted, and can be depended upon for excel-lent work around the ends. These two andSimonds form as good material as we can

wish. Andrews is playing better than everin his position at full back, and we can hardlysay more. His record in punting is an envi-able one; at the time of writing he has kicked

all of nine goals tried for, while also doing;.. excellent work down the field.

It is only in the rush line that improvementcan be suggested, and that, again, only in theends., They get through in good style, butare weak in holding. It seems to us thatVorce is just the man needed for this place;with Wardner and himself to finish out theline, we would be confident of the improvementnecessary. Johnson's work at right tacklecould not be improved upon. Mayo comesfrom Exeter with a fine record, and shouldeasily make the best man for tackle. Taintor,Harvey, whom we trust will speedily win aplace on the team, Dana and Gilman, are a

splendid list to choose from. Fo: a new man,Dana is certainly showing up wonderfullywell. Manahan makes the best center Techhas had for a long time,-heavy, and quick at

snapping ba/ck the ball at the same time.Nash shows improvement, and is a good sub-.stitute, while more work on Clapp's partwould easily win him a valuable position.

Viewing the eleven as a whole, a markedimprovement is very apparent in blocking offand interference generally; indeed, the teamwork is of a very high order of merit. Itcertainly seems justifiable to feel that the reac-tion has set in, and that we are about to regainour old position. All of which emphasizes thenecessity of support. The team is certainlydoing its share of work; let the rest of us doours, and do it as well.

TECH.9 42: HOLY CROSS, O.

OUR football team made an excellent be-ginning by beating Holy Cross, 42-0, last

Saturday, on "Clover Field." The blockingoff was good, as was the work of the backsin running with the ball. There was goodteam work right through, and although HolyCross wras much heavier, Tech. played all

around them. Dearborn, Johnson, and Ward-

ner each scored two touchdowns, and Andrewsone. Andrews kicked well, getting all ofseven goals tried for. About eight hundredspectators lined the field, among them a goodaverage of Tech. men.

The game was called at 4.I5. The teamslined up as follows: Tech.-rushers, Greene,Johnson, Gilman, Manahan, Dana, Wardner,Thomas; quarter back, Thomas, J. W.; halfbacks, Rockwell, Dearborn; full back, An-drews. Holy Cross-rushers, Austin, Sulli-van, Colburt, Jordan, Flinn, Dolan, Dixon;quarter back, McKone; half backs, Gilligan,Cottrell; full back, Hogan.

Tech. started with the ball, tried the V, andmade no gain. Johnson then gained fifteenyards, which Rockwell failed to increase. On the third down the revolving V was tried, and five yards gained. In a series of rushesby Andrews, Johnson, and Rockwell, the ballwas carried to the Holy Cross 5-yard line, whence Dearborn scored the first touchdown,at 4.20. Andrews kicked the goal. Score,6-o.

Holy Cross failed to gain on the V. Cot-

trell then made four yards, when the ball waslost on a fumble. Rockwell made fifteenyards for Tech., and Johnson five. The ballwas then given to Andrews, who made tenyards, assisted by Dearborn's fine blocking.Five yards was made on the revolving V.Wardner gained eight, and Andrews fivemore; and Johnson carried the ball fifteenyards and across the line for the second touch-down, at 4.27. Andrews kicked the goal.Score, 1 2-0.

Holy Cross failed to gain in three downs, and the ball went to Tech. Rockwell madethree yards, and Andrews kicked to HolyCross' 25 -yard line. Holy Cross was giventwenty-five yards on a foul tackle. Rockwellthen went down the field for a gain of fifteenyards. Johnson followed with twenty more, and Wardner increased that by ten. No gainwas made on the revolving V; but Rockwelltook ten yards from Holy Cross, and Dear-

Holy Cross made five yards on the V.Rockwell then made a fine run for thirtyyards, which Johnson increased by five.Tech. took four yards more, and Wardner, from the 25-yard line, then carried the ballacross for the fourth touchdown. Goal byAndrews. Score, 24-0.

Holy Cross made five yards, and then lostthree. Tech. secured the ball on four downs,Andrews was downed before he could gain, and time was called.

Second half.-Abbott took Greene's place atright end. Holy Cross lost the ball aftermaking three yards; Rockwell then gainedtwenty yards, Johnson three, and Andrewsthirty-five more for a touchdown, kicking thegoal. Score, 30-0.

Holy Cross gained four yards, then lost theball to Tech. Andrews kicked, put the menon side, and Tech. scored the next touch-down, Andrews kicking the goal. Score,36-o.

Holy Cross made six yards in three trials, then lost the ball to Tech. Rockwell madefive yards, Andrews kicked, and Wardnermade a touchdown. Goal. Score, 42-0.

Holy Cross made three yards, and timewas called at 5.35, with the ball in the centerof the field.

Mr. Horace Burrough, of Johns Hopkins, refereed, and Mr. T. F. Devine, of HolyCross, umpired.

Andrews kicked every goal that was triedfor.

Technology, I2; B. A. A., o.B. A. A. beef was no match for Technol-

ogy science at the South End grounds lastWednesday. It was perfect football weather, and about two hundred Tech. men turned outto cheer the team to victory. The teams linedup as follows, B. A. A. having the ball:

Tech.-rushers, Nash (Abbott), Wardner,Gilman, Manahan, Taintor, Johnson, P.

-H. Thomas; quarter back, J. W. Thomas(Capt.) ; half backs, Dearborn, Rockwell;full back, Andrews. B. A. A.-rushers,Prest, Lanning, VVare, Noyes, Whitman,Waters (Capt.), Batchelder; quarter back,Beals; half backs, Peters, Anthony; fullback, McNear.

B. A. A. made ten yards on the V, Watersgot four yards and Peters five, but Tech. tookthe ball after two downs on off-side play.Dearborn ran around the left end for twentyyards, and gains rapidly followed; five yards byThomas through the center, five by Andrews, ten by Johnson, and twenty by Wardner in apretty run around the end. Fine interferenceand blocking characterized Tech.'s play, andB. A. A. was clearly outclassed. The ballwas now on the I5-yard line, and Rockwellran round the end for a touchdown. Andrewskicked the goal. Tech., 6; B. A. A., o.

B. A. A. made eight yards on the V, andsuccessive small gains; but the players fum-bled badly and could not get through, Tech.obtaining the ball on the 25-yard line. Rock-well made a pretty play, taking the ball overDearborn's shoulder after the latter had fum-bled it, and making ten yards. The ball wasnow worked up the field to the 35-yard line, where Tech. lost it on a false decision of thereferee. A foul tackle made it Tech.'s ballagain, and Rockwell made thirty yards roundthe end, bringing the ball to the 5-yard line, where it remained until time was called.

Tech. started off in the second half withfive yards on the V, and a rush by Dearbornfor five more. Andrews fumbled, and theball went to B. A. A. Tech. held well andgot it again on four downs, and Simonds,Thomas, and Dearborn carried it down thefield. A forward pass gave B. A. It was decided that thereshall be no outdoor open handicap meetingof the Athletic Club this fall, because there isnot sufficient promise for its success. Themeeting held last fall on the South Endgrounds although successful athletically, wasnot so financially, and the Executive Com-mittee do not feel in position to lose anymore money at present. The other meetingswill be held as usual, the time, events, etc.,to be announced later.

'THE Lounger, whilst reading a few of the wvittiestthings in that old contemporary, Life, quite recently, found a mere scrap of an editorial which conveyedmany and varied ideas to him. It was only a shortparagraph, written with the intent to be funny andbright, and to appeal to the minds of all of LZfe'sreaders. It simply stated that summer was last. andthat the cheerful yawp of the undergraduate would beheard once more in the land. Now, the Lotunger doesnot like the word yawp, and thinks they should havefound a much more suitable wore suitable word; it is not good formto characterize all that is good, noble, and true, insuch a vulgar way. This squib goes on to enumerate

the different phases of college scandals,-which thesubject of the sketch will figure in a little later, andeulogizes the ardor ith e, the undergraduates, were in the habit of picking away at the chestnut of life.

What was written was not particularly well written, nor were the ideas entirely new, but somehow it allmade a deep impression on the Lounger, hardly sufficient, perhaps, as a topic on which to write, yet deep enoughto call forth his views and suggestions.

Yes; what was said as said as true. e live now; andfor the next ten months to come we shall be the menwho are read and talked about. Our nmatches andraces now come in for their full share of praise; our

faults and failings are bemoaned and deplored, andcriticism is not in any case withheld. And, after all, what side of us is most prominently before the public? Not the best side of our lives is written about and

read all over the United States. WAe don't ever figureas young philanthropists, nor are our many meritoriousactions and deeds heard from, except in an occasionalline in some of the out-of-the-way corners of a news-paper and in the Lounger column. The illustratedpapers of to-day do not take any pains, or spend anymoney, on the men who make names at our collegesas students and thinkers; it would not take with theoutside world.

"If this is the condition of things, then where dothe Institute men stand in the outside world ?" is thequestion that is asked by all. The Lounger thinks heknows, and perhaps more than one of his readers areon the right track. W\e have our position among theproper class of men, and we are recognized, every oneof us who has (ione his duty, as "a man among men."

The popularity of college athletes may le very wellin its way, but people do not consider what becomesof these men of so much college fame, in their businesscareers and their later walks in life. It is needless todwell upon the disappointments and failures some ofthem have made ; examples of this are familiar to allof us. It all goes to prove that at such colleges andinstitutions as oturs, where less time is given to athleticsand more to study, the men who are turned away fromour doors are better able to make a more decidedand successful stand in life (not comic Life).

" oderation in all things,"' is one of the best rulesthat the Lounger can recommend to the Institute men.

1Who knows the tendencies more than himself. Whenfor six evenings in the week he has dropped into hisold armchair and tried to think. He never got anyfurther than that. Then he woulcl spend his nextweek in thinking what he ought to have thought aboutthe week blefore, when he only thought he was think-ing. A condition of affairs like this is truly awful, andl yet how mnany of us experience such trials. We(do not follow this old maxim. We are too willing to gointo things too deeply. First, we imagine we aregrinds, then we like to think we are athletes, andfirmly believe athletes were born, not made (quietlybanking on our chances for the general merit cup).Later we get the society bee in our alpine hats (womenvear them), and we are mental, physical, and, Imight add, intellectual wrecks inside of a few weeks. But saddest of all is that man who thinks he is asport. Ah me ! The lounger is grieved to admit hehas seen now and then a case of misplaced confidencein one's self. (This invariably occurred after some ofour numerous dinners.) The Lounger pities a manwhen he has no more self-confidence than to hesitatewhere to plut his foot down next. He will never havesufficient confid(ence to bluff the Faculty for a degree. And what tlo all these stages of a Tech. man, whichShakespeare sp)eaks of so admirably (no space to giveexact lquotation), blring us to ? We all know, and whoso well as the sport? rThe Lounger's advice is thatevery one who nwants to try the different phases ofTech. life should start first with the sport, then society, athletics, and finally a grind; this will give " betterresults."

FACULTY RULES.

A Prex should be fat and fair,With not much hair,

And an airThat seems to say through the long, long day,

"I know much more than you think I do,"And he needs to, too.

A suitable Dean should be lean,And lanky and grim,With an air about him

Which says, " Young Freshmen, you'd better bewareOf my gruesome lair,

After Saturday toots,"And he is, you may bet your boots. But a Prof. may be what he pleases,

With a fierce moustache,Or a look as if hash

On boarding-house tables had been his fhre:But he needs an air

Of knowing much more than he really knows,And that goes.

-Lampoon."I used to cwease my trousers,

And I got quite used to that; But now, baw jove," said Cholly,"I have to cwease nmy hat."

-Yale Record.WASTEFUL.

A quiz had been given an hour beforeOn "Waste," to the Pol. Econ. class;

The digs got an "' Ex" (for they're up on such lore); But one who was not, didn't pass.

He bitterly laughed, and his grim eyes shone,That he such a fool could still be,

When he was acquainted with Polly Conn,And knew what, well !-;' wait" meant,-see?

-Brunonian.

WELLESLEY DEMOCRACY.

"Why waste your time on him?" I said;"The man is silly, stupid, flat."

Rebelliously she shook her head,"A man's a man for a' that."

- Welle.fev Prelude.

All ye who such puzzles enjoy,Explain to me this, if you can,-

Why the men call each other " My boy,"While the boys call each other "Old man."
