PAUL “They always say you can’t win a tournament on the first day,” Tom Cody, the Director of Golf for the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am, was observing Sunday night. “But Craig Brischke did it this weekend.” Well, sort of. Brischke shot a tournament-record 62 at Southview Country Club on Friday in the first round of this year’s Tapemark, and he did end up winning the event. But you could also say that he won Sunday, on the final three holes. Trailing by two as he teed off on the seventh hole his 16th of the day (he started on the back nine), Brischke went birdie-par-par in a howling wind to post a 72, which gave him a 54-hole aggregate of 202 (11 under), and that was good If experience comes in handy, in came in bunches at the 41st Annual Tapemark Charity Pro-Am on Sunday, June 10th. The Team Competition was a race be- tween two teams captained by long-time veteran professionals Craig Waryan and Mike Zinni, who have at least 45 Pro- Ams between them. Waryan, the master teaching professional at Edinburgh USA, brought his team of Scott Linnerooth, Jim Dumke, and Steven Kelly home with the Championship trophy at 63 under. They eked out a two-stroke victory over the team featuring Zinni and an all- Southview CC team of amateurs Billy Barnhart, Ken Nelson, and Phil Johnson. Linnerooth was a huge boost to the winning team’s scoring, posting net rounds of 72.71, and 70, with birdies on 3 of his final 5 holes in Sunday’s champion- ship round. B amateur Dumke pitched in tapemarkgolf.org Tapemark Charity Pro-Am 651-552-5639 Women’s Pro-Am continued on page 8. Nause Captures 1st Ever Nora McGuire Trophy in Playoff Going into the second and final day of competition in the inaugural Tapemark Women’s Pro-Am, Martha Nause (Mendakota CC) trailed Katie Detlefsen by 4 strokes. Sunday’s champion- ship round was played in sunny but very windy conditions, and it looked like the steadier player would be most likely to come out on top. Over the course of the final six holes, Detlefsen (Somerby GC) carded two double bogies and a bogey while Nause strung together three pars. But Detlefsen managed birdies on the 17th and 18th holes, both par 5s, and that meant that they finished tied for the lead at the completion of play. Detlefsen had completed Tues- day’s first round with a 4-under 69 that included birdies on 7 holes. In golf, a Pro will show you

how to be your best. Tapemark is your Pro

when it comes to pharmaceutical contract manufacturing.

In 2012, we celebrate

60 years of success! As an industry leader in pharmaceutical contract

manufacturing, we know how to get the job done.

TAPEMARK

1-800-535-1998 www.tapemark.com

60 Years of Success In 1952, Bob Klas, Sr. started The Tapemark Company with courage, conviction, and an entrepreneurial attitude, attracting the company’s first customers with the ability to print on self-wound tape. Today, as we celebrate our 60th anniversary, Tapemark brings a wealth of contract manufacturing experience with successful product launches for pharmaceutical products, both prescription and over-the-counter, medical devices, and consumer products. A leader in innovative pharmaceutical dosage forms, Tapemark focuses on drug delivery formats including transdermal patches, oral dissolvable film, and unit-dose application of drugs applied topically to the skin. Tapemark is known for its proven quality systems. Each product is manufactured in a cGMP and FDA-registered and audited environment, with ISO 13485 and 9001 certification. Supporting global markets, Tapemark has been successfully audited by the European Union, Japan, Australia and Korea, and today we ship products to over 30 countries.

ProAct, The Arc of Minnesota, Dakota Communities and The Arc Greater Twin Cities are the foundation of the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am. The Pro-Am continues to work hard year after year because they believe in each organization and their mission.

The Pro-Am is not about each person’s golf game or the prizes the participants take away from the raffle; it’s about the help everyone involved provides to these non-profit organiza-tions and their dedication to individuals with developmental disabilities.

The Tapemark Pro-Am thanks each and every one of the golfers, participants, volunteers and families who reached into their hearts and gave from their pockets to help the dedi-cated workers and volunteers of these organizations.

The organizations will continue to make a significant difference in the lives of people living with developmen-tal disabilities — charities and individu-als most deserving of our support.

Although the Pro-Am could not have done it without everyone involved with the tournament in some way or another, the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am owes an extra debt of gratitude to those that led by example.

When Shaun Irwin got on stage at the Saturday Night Banquet he asked for continued support from the people that the organizations and the Pro-Am

have been relying on all throughout the weekend. He could not have been met with a more positive and quick response.

Presenting Sponsor Irwin challenged others to support the Charity Challenge by raising his level of support by $6,000 – to $41,000. He said that 41 was appropriate for the year of the Pro-Am, which is celebrating its 41st annual event.

Irwin told the attendees at the banquet that if they raised $6,000 at that moment, he would match it.

That night, Irwin and 13 generous donors raised an additional $12,000 for

the Tapemark Charity Challenge! This brought the current Charity

Challenge total to more than $30,289, with donations still coming in. The Charity Challenge is a success because of the generosity of our supporters and the willingness of our participants to open their hearts and wallets.

Thank you for making this an amazing year.

enough for a one-stroke victory over Jon Sauer.

In addition to tying the record for lowest 18-hole score with his opening round, Brischke, who won the Tapemark once before, in 2000, set a record for the longest span between two victories by the same player — 12 years. This victory was worth $6,000. (The 50-year-old head professional at Tan-ners Brook GC was also the low senior. As such, he could have taken the $500 prize for that, but he couldn’t accept both first-place checks, and he had to choose one or the other. Brischke opted for the $6,000, rather than the $500. A wise decision.)

Sauer, who has had more second-place finishes than he would care to re-member (he was runner-up in the State Amateur two years in a row, before turn-ing professional in 2010), may find this one will probably be more painful than most of the others because he could have won by parring his last two holes. But a gust of wind ballooned his second shot at No. 8 and dropped it 5 feet short of the green, and he three-putted from there. He also three-putted the ninth for a 72 and a 203.

“Another second,” Sauer lamented. “It sucks.”

A lot of players had trouble with the wind — which was blowing at about 20 miles per hour most of the time and gusting to 30 mph and beyond — on Sunday. Ryan Peterson, who had shot 66 and 67 and started the day tied for third, could do no better than a 74 in his valedictory. Even so, he actually gained ground and finished third alone at 207.

The best round of the day, by two strokes, was a 65 produced by Clayton Rask, who returned to the Tapemark this year after spending 2011 on the Nationwide Tour. That moved him up substantially, and he finished solo sixth.

Brischke is one of the guys whose names have come up fairly frequently during the last couple of decades when-ever there was a discussion of Minne-sota’s most under-rated pros.

“I’m not Don Berry,” he says, referring to the 14-time Minnesota PGA Player of the Year and winner of 19 Minnesota professional majors, includ-ing six Tapemark Charity Pro-Ams. But Brischke has been in the hunt for state titles on more than a few occasions. His strengths are his driver and his wedges.

“I’m not afraid to hit my driver on tight holes,” he said. And the combina-tion of accurate driving and first-rate wedge play — “From 75 to 100 yards,” Brischke says, “I think I can get it inside of 10 feet almost every time” — are just about guaranteed to make you a threat in the Tapemark, because Southview

plays only about 6,150 yards. Anyone who can drive it in the fairway consis-tently is bound to have wedge shots into most of the greens on par-4’s.

That was how Brischke got to 12 under par after 36 holes. Sunday, on the other hand, was a different matter. The wind made picking a club almost a casino game.

“I never felt comfortable with the club I picked all day,” Brischke conced-ed. “There was always some doubt.”

Brischke got one stroke back by hitting an equally impressive wedge shot to the tucked pin in the back left portion of the seventh green and dupli-cating Sauer’s birdie. And Sauer’s bogey on 8 meant that they went to the 9th hole tied.

As Sauer teed off at the par-4 ninth, which was shortened to 275 yards to entice players to try to drive the green, Brischke was hitting a pitching wedge from 120 yards just over and to the right of the eighth green. It left him a ticklish chip, which he handled deftly, leaving himself a 6-inch tap-in for his par.

“A few years ago, I had what you would almost call the yips,” Brischke ad-mitted. “If I’d had that chip on 8 then, I would have either moved the ball 1 foot from where I started, or I would have skulled it over the green. Now I’m a lot better at those shots. Mostly, it’s a mat-ter of tempo. I just make sure the club goes back slowly and smoothly. That was a really good chip I hit there today.”

Neither Sauer nor Brischke went for the bait on No. 9. In their turn, both laid up to about 100 yards. But Sauer, who had spun his wedge shot back off the ninth green on Saturday, made sure that didn’t happen again on Sunday, when the pin was cut no more than 18 feet from the front of the green, and he went 30 feet past and slightly to the left. From there, he hit an aggressive putt that was a little too high — and went 4 feet past.

It was pretty much the same distance he’d missed from on 8, except that now he was below the hole. But he didn’t hit his par putt at 9 as well as he hit the one on 8, and this one didn’t go in, either, lipping out on the left side of the cup.

Unlike Sauer, who hit his second at the ninth hole from the fairway, Brischke was about 3 feet into the left rough. It wasn’t a problem. His wedge shot landed on the very front of the green and came to a stop 14 feet below and to the left of the hole. It was about as easy a place to two-putt from as you could find, and Brischke had no trouble making his par and sealing the victory.

began on the par-4 first hole, with Detlefsen and Nause both putting their drives on the fairway. Their approach shots both landed on the very tricky green, Detlefsen left with a longer putt from below the hole. Nause’s ball rested closer, about 7 feet away, but on a slight downhill lie. Detlefsen went first and rolled her putt close, but short. Nause stood over her putt and then calmly rolled it in for a birdie, the Nora McGuire Professional Trophy, and the $1000 winner’s check.

Julie Hennessy (Lewiston CC) finished alone in 3rd place, four shots back of the leading pair, and Angela Ause (Univ of MN) finished 4th, eight shots behind.

Ause’s team was triumphant in the Team Championship, finishing at -40 over the two days of competition. Ause’s team included amateurs Willow Flaherty, Elizabeth Schaan, and Connie Sillerud. The second place team was captained by professional Kathy Swanson and featured amateurs Bonnie Jung, Kathy Pearson, and Mary Thesenga, finishing six strokes back at -34.

And Kristi Meyers ran away with the first Tapemark Women’s Low Amateur title, shooting a 13-over 159 to win by sixteen strokes over Jordan Drenttel of Southview Country Club.

A SPECIAL Thank You…TO THE MEMBERS, BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND

STAFF OF SOUTHVIEW COUNTRY CLUB

behalf of thousands of Minnesota children and adults living with developmental disabilities, we thank the members and staff of Southview Country Club for their

support of the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am. For 41 years, Southview Country Club has been our indispensable partner in the Pro-Am, helping us raise $6.5 million for our benefiting charities.

As you may know, Southview donates the use of their beautiful course for the entire weekend of the Pro-Am. The Pro-Am would not be the successful fundraising event it is without this generous contribution. Many Southview members have also contributed individually to the Pro-Am effort, competing as amateurs in the Men’s and Women’s Events, providing individual or corporate hole sponsorships, and offering cash or merchandise donations.

The entire staff at Southview has always played a significant role in the success of the Pro-Am weekend, and we thank them for 41 years of hard work and first-class service. The staff at Southview always ensures that the course, facilities and services are in top-flight condition, and that has been the case every weekend since the very first Pro-Am in 1972. We offer our thanks to every member of the Southview Staff who has been a part of the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am, and a very special thanks to the current staff at Southview, especially General Manager Mark McCahey, Head Professional Phil Anderson and Grounds Superin-tendent Jeramie Gossman.

If you know a Southview member, or see a member of the staff take a second to thank them for their contribution and their hard work.

Helping Make this a Good Life for People with Disabilities

You’ve heard it said that The Arc Greater Twin Cities helps people with in-tellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families achieve a good life. But what does a good life mean?

For Donovan, it’s the chance to develop his talents. Donovan is a “natu-ral” when it comes to computers and technology, and his dream is to become a graphic designer. But Donovan has Asperger’s syndrome, and his school

wasn’t giving him the educational ser-vices or support to help him reach his goal. He was very frustrated and ready to give up.

Donovan’s parents contacted The Arc Greater Twin Cities. With an advocate’s help, Donovan transferred to a new school where he was able to receive an Individualized Education Program (IEP) better suited to his needs and goals. The result: he graduated from high school and is now taking his first college-level course at North Hen-nepin Community College.

“This is the start of a good life for me,” Donovan said. “I just had to get the right people to help me, and that’s what Arc did. It’s like a clean slate. Most of my dreams are coming true.”

This spring Donovan also got

his driver’s license. His proud mom emailed The Arc to thank us for assist-ing Donovan, mentioning that his next goal was to get a part-time job to help pay for gas and insurance for the car. He was struggling to find work, howev-er, because he had no work experience. The Arc suggested he apply at Arc’s Value Village. Donovan did just that, showing up for the interview in a suit and tie — a first at Arc’s Value Village Thrift Stores & Donation Centers! He was hired and started the very next day and now works at Value Village three days each week.

Every day, The Arc Greater Twin Cities is helping people like Donovan make their dreams come true. People turn to The Arc for many reasons. Some seek advocacy assistance for a problem they can’t handle alone; others need information; some hope to connect with others who share their experiences and concerns. They are all striving toward the same thing: a good life. Thanks to the support of the Tapemark Charity Pro Am and all of the generous people involved, The Arc Greater Twin Cities can help.

About Arc Greater Twin Cities

The Arc Greater Twin Cities has been working to make this a good life for people with intellectual and devel-opmental disabilities and their families in the Twin Cities for over 65 years. Those served by The Arc face many challenges, such as isolation, discrimi-nation, economic hardship, risk for abuse, lack of employment and housing options. Advocacy from The Arc helps people by providing tools and training to overcome other challenges in the future. The Arc’s services include abuse prevention & awareness; information & assistance; long-term planning through the Lifetime Assistance Program; networking and Family Access groups; public policy advocacy; self-advocacy and sibling programs. Last year The Arc assisted over 2,000 people with information and advocacy and individu-als participated more than 5,000 times in parent and sibling groups, workshops, family activities and other events. In 2011, about 23% of those served were from multicultural communities and 59% were from low-income households.

Rachel, who has Down syndrome, needs medical services most children don’t need. The Arc helped secure Medical Assistance

for her and now she is getting the health care she needs.

How may we help you?

The Arc Greater Twin Cities

Does your support of The Arc Greater Twin Cities really matter? Yes! Your support and that of other generous souls who share our vision of making this a good life for people with disabilities and their families adds up and literally changes lives.

I am the mother of a 31 year-old son who has been severely disabled since birth. I worked outside the home until he was 22 years old. Then his health deteriorated, and I had no choice but to stay home with him. I knew that he was getting the best care possible from me. I could also do preventive care, since I could spot things much earlier than would an outside personal care attendant (PCA) who might not notice until the person needed to be hospital-ized. Hiring someone outside was just not a viable option, because of limits on hours that people with disabilities can receive for PCA help. This makes it dif-ficult to find someone to drive to your home for just a few hours of work.

When Minnesota elected officials passed a 20% cut to wages to PCAs like

me who support their family member, I felt like the state was punishing us. I saw the effects of the cuts not only on my household, but on the families who are served by the PCA agency I operate.

Our financial and family stress in-creased. While we still would be able to give them the best care physically and emotionally, our family members still depended on us financially for hous-ing, clothes, and food. We were already putting in 24 hour-shifts for our family member, caring for them even when the paid PCA hours ran out. Now we were asked to do the same work for 20% less pay.

I wanted state officials who approved this pay cut to come into my home for 24 hours and see what we go through every day and what we do for our loved ones. I got connected with disability advocacy agencies like The Arc Minnesota, shared my story with legislators, and urged the other families I serve through my agency to share theirs as well. So far, this advocacy has paid off. The Legislature found money to reverse the wage cut for at least a year. I know that we’ll be revisiting this issue again next year to try and make that reversal permanent. But I feel good knowing that we made an impact and that through organizations like The Arc Minnesota, our voices can be heard.

History of The Arc MinnesotaThe Arc Minnesota provides a voice to those not heard and shines a light on the struggles faced by individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families. For 60 years, The Arc Minnesota has been the leader in the state supporting civic engagement of individuals with intel-lectual and developmental disabilities. The Arc Minnesota engages, empow-ers and activates its 3,500 members and the 70,000 other individuals with disabilities to be heard, listened to and respected by their elected officials. By working at a grassroots level through the 12 local chapters, The Arc Minnesota has become the leader in disability issues in the state.

Because of The Arc Minnesota,• It is no longer the norm for children

born with intellectual and develop-mental disabilities to spend their lives in institutions.

• We now have a system of supports that allow families to love and care for their children in their own homes and in their own communities.

• Every child in this country is afforded

the right to a public education, regard-less of their intellectual or ability level.

• Many adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities now have opportunities to live, learn, work, and participate as valued members of their communities.

• People with intellectual and devel-opmental disabilities have a quality of life that is far richer than life in an institution, which was the norm before The Arc began its journey.

Proud to be the host and partner of the 41st Annual Tapemark Charity Pro-Am

By Ashley Hall All three inductees were overcome with emotion as the presenters of their awards described the significance of each and their personal relationship to each one.

Jim MadisonOne long-time supporter was Jim Madison. Jim has worked at the Pro-Am for 31 years with his family.

His involvement started because of his son James Jr., or “Jimmy.” Jimmy was diagnosed with a learning disability when Jim and his family moved here from California.

The Madison family has been a part of the tournament in many different ways, whether it is playing in the tournament, working the 14th hole concession stand or the Saturday Night Auction.

“For everything that Jim Madison and his family have done to support the TMCPA for over three decades, we are

pleased to induct Jim Madison into the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am Hall of Fame,” said Bob Klas Jr., Tapemark president.

Mark McCaheyThe last inductee was a person who has been a part of the tournament for 41 years.

Mark McCahey has been the go-to guy for all of the tournament’s needs and has been the general manager at Southview Country Club for 29 years. McCahey first started out at the tourna-ment as a caddie then moved up the ranks from bag boy, shoe shine guy, bartender, waiter, and assistant general manager.

McCahey was described as a guy who always figures out a way to get something done per the request of the tournament organizers.

“Anything, and I mean, anything we need, Mark looks at me and imme-diately says ‘No problem,’” Phil Callen said, the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am

president. “If I’ve suggested something that is completely crazy, I only know that it’s completely crazy because Mark pauses a few seconds before saying ‘No problem’.”

Tom Cody

Another long-time volunteer at the tournament instated into the Hall of Fame was Tom Cody.

Cody has worked at the Pro-Am for 41 years. His father, the late Pat Cody, was a co-founder of the tournament 41 years ago.

Alongside his father, Cody has con-tributed to the tournament in a “behind the scenes” way. Cody has been keep-ing the scores and organizing the daily score board since the beginning and his sons are carrying on the Cody tradition.

“But in so many important ways, Tom is more than just the keeper of the Pro-Am’s history. He is the Pro-Am’s history,” Klas Jr. said. “He has been the essential link — the force that’s moved us from our modest beginnings — to become an event that has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of Minnesotans living with developmental disabilities.”

Cody is a big supporter of the charities involved with the tournament

but also with the idea of tradition and family.

“This tournament is a family and we want you to teach your kids about charities and their kids about charities,” Cody said. “We take our turn and then we want to make sure our kids take their turn.”

New Inductees to the Tapemark Pro-Am Hall of FameThree of the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am’s valued friends and supporters were inducted into the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am Hall of Fame at the Saturday Night Banquet.

Without the support of these three gentlemen, the work that the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am does would not be possible.

A Contagious Smile As Dakota Communities celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2012, there are many individuals who have been with us from the start. For a nine-year-old boy named Jim, the day our doors opened in 1973 marked a gateway to greater independence and unprecedented opportunities.

When Jim was born his mother knew something was different; he was restless and did not respond or behave like her previous newborns. Because Jim was the fourth boy and sixth child, his parents were already busy — and knew they needed help caring for a child with disabilities.

Shortly after his fourth birthday, Jim’s family placed him in a home. It was quite far away, and his younger brothers and sisters were only allowed to visit once per year. Unfortunately,

Jim spent most of his day in a crib with little interaction or stimulation. It was certainly not an ideal situation, but there were no alternatives at the time.

Then when a new home for children opened in West St. Paul, Jim’s family began to feel a sense of excitement and hope: the possibility of a new life. Dakota’s Children offered a “new way” of caring for children with special needs: one that focused on indepen-dence, skill building, and community inclusion. All of his family were encour-aged to visit anytime, and he could visit his family’s home too. Jim blossomed in this new setting. He received physical and speech therapy as well as a wheel-chair, which gave him new mobility.

The next 40 years proved to be a series of amazing accomplishments for Jim. His sister Kathy talks with great excitement about the day Jim began to feed himself — something they had

previously been told he would never do on his own. “This was a tremendous accomplishment. We had also been told that Jim would never be able to com-municate or perform even the smallest task for himself. Today Jim does com-municate — and sometimes very loudly! To that I will say that we did not know or understand the forces at play within the walls of Dakota Communities, for which the words ‘he can’t do this’ would have no meaning.”

Eight years after Jim moved to Dakota Children’s, a new employee — and soon to be great friend — arrived. Denise Forner and Jim began a life-long friendship that continues more than 30 years later. With Denise’s support, Jim has been a regular volunteer at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis since 1994. He greets theater patrons and leads them to their seats with his never-ending charm and contagious smile.

With the closure of Dakota Com-munities’ Marie Avenue home in 2001, Jim began the next chapter in his life. He moved to his current home with Dakota Communities in South St. Paul — with his friend and advocate Denise by his side. Together Jim and Denise even decorated Jim’s room to suit his person-ality. It feels like an island paradise, complete with a bed that looks like a grass hut and a bamboo dresser.

Denise will tell you that Jim continues to amaze her on a daily basis. She gives all the credit to Jim as she humbly states, “There is nothing that Jim cannot do when he sets his mind to it.” Through the generous support of Dakota Communities donors, Jim’s home has an accessible vehicle. With it he experiences greater access to his community and continues his volunteer work at the Guthrie. Jim Miller is only one example of the many lives that have been touched by Dakota Commu-nities and, in turn, he has made all of our lives better as well.

About Dakota CommunitiesDakota Communities is a non-profit organization founded in West St. Paul in 1972 by parents of children with disabilities, volunteers, and community partners. Today it serves adults and children in their family homes, their communities, and 33 Dakota Communi-ties residential settings throughout the Greater Twin Cities metropolitan area. Their Non-Residential services include family support, therapeutic recreation, therapy, and supported employment. Services are provided in eight coun-ties: Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin, Isanti, Ramsey, Sherburne, Washington, and Wright. In 2012, Dakota Communities is celebrating 40 incredible years of partnering with people with disabilities to realize their goals and potential.

Dakota Communities pioneered innovation in community participa-tion opportunities for people with disabilities. Dogsledding in northern Minnesota, serving as volunteers in their communities, creating world class gardens at their homes and at the state fair, taking charge of their own health through active participation in health coaching programs, are but a few of these “leading edge” innova-tions. When society thought most about what people with disabilities could not do, Dakota Communities led the way in creating “can do” opportunities with the help of many community partners. Support from Tapemark Charity Pro-Am helped make many dreams come true over the last forty years.

At Dakota Communities, people who are served are participants in life — not just spectators. With one vehicle for one facility in West St. Paul in 1973, Dakota Communities now has accessible vehicles at each of their thirty-three homes. Support from Tapemark Charity Pro-Am helped purchase accessible vehicles. Accessible vehicles are the headline, but the real story is about the life an accessible vehicle supports, a life of living, working, playing and volun-teering fully in the community.

of Barnhart all alone in 3rd place. In an interesting twist, Ben Meyer of Austin CC finished his third round at 12-over, which normally would have guaranteed him second place. But he didn’t make Saturday’s cut in the low amateur com-petition, meaning his third round 71 only helped his amateur team score.

Also of note for this year’s com-petition, the easiest hole for both pros and amateurs was the par-5 4th hole, playing at an average of 4.61 strokes for pros and 5.5 strokes for amateurs. And the hardest hole was again the same for both pros and amateurs, the long par-4 16th hole, which played at 4/4 strokes for pros and 5.38 strokes for amateurs, almost a stroke and a half over par.

with net rounds of 66, 69, and 67, and Kelly added net rounds of 80, 69, and 72.

Finishing in 3rd place, 6 strokes back of the leaders, was the team of professional Derek Holmes, and ama-teurs Bruce Haslerud, Chris Bienash, and Jim Montalbano.

The amateur team cut on Saturday ended up at 25-under, which knocked 3 teams off the bubble prior to the cut.

The low amateur competition saw a repeat titleist, with Eric Hayne (White Bear Yacht Club) taking his second straight amateur championship at 7-over with rounds of 71-74-75. He was six strokes better than Billy Barnhart (Southview CC) who finished at 32-over with 77-72-77. Larry Gamst, also of Southview CC, finished one stroke back

Thanks to you, the Tapemark Charity Challenge raised $49,188!

Thank you to all the generous donors of the inaugural Tapemark Charity Chal-lenge. We asked all our friends to help us spread the word about the Pro-Am, and the important funds we raise to support people living with developmental disabilities. And these folks met the Challenge!

One of the main reasons for the success of the Charity Challenge was the very generous $15,000 challenge match we received from our dear friends at Staples Financial. They wanted to ensure that the first 100 people who raised $50 for a benefiting charity team would receive an additional $150 for that charity. And all 100 of those matches were earned!

So along with their support, a contribution to the Challenge means that we were able to bring in a grand total of nearly $50,000 to improve the lives of people living with developmental disabilities, and their families.

Many people with disabilities from ProAct have proven to be among the best workers at retail stores, with consistent reliability and a positive attitude. Chris Morgan at Sam’s Club in Eagan fits this bill, and got his start with help from the nonprofit.

“Did you find everything? Thanks for shopping. Have a good day,” says Morgan, who stays two steps ahead, counting items in a customer’s cart as he approaches him with a receipt. The greeter says it’s “game on” when he enters the door at work, and that attitude has drawn kudos from multiple angles. “Everytime I come in and step through the doors I leave

all the dramatic stuff outside and just focus on work,” he said.

After receiving four customer comment cards in one day, his general manager was amazed. She asked if all of them were his. “Yep,” he responded.

Shoppers can read the kudos posted on a board under Morgan’s pho-to. “Extremely helpful ... he’s a people person ... Chris met us at the door and helped with our electric cart ... very friendly ...”

The greeter and cart checker is the last person guests see as they push their carts of product out to the large Eagan lot. Morgan makes the last impression a good one, pouring on the

friendliness and charm. “I try to keep them happy,” he says.

ProAct vocational specialist Deb Ulrich helped Morgan find and keep a cart attendant job here in 2010. What’s important is employer inter-action, she said. ProAct talks to new employees, and provides follow up, but, before being hired, they’re made “placement ready” through work assessment training. ProAct serves as a kind of advisor, she explains. In some ways, it’s like a screening service for employers that qualifies job candidates.

Morgan said Ulrich helped him out a bunch of times. “She’s really good. I would say she’s one of the best job coaches at ProAct.”

Managers have found that Morgan can fill other roles as needed. He can restock shelves with returned items, and separate out damaged goods, sign people up for credit cards and run cleaning equipment.

“The corporate people love him. He’s energetic, open minded, always friendly. He’s doing great,” said Super-visor Becky Stuart. When Sam’s Club corporate leaders make a visit, they want Morgan to be there.

As lines at the exit door get long, he works to move people through quickly. “It doesn’t get any better than this. I love my job,” he said. He plans to stay on as long as he can.

About ProActProAct, Inc. is a Minnesota-based private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organiza-tion with 40 years of experience. The organization provides a comprehensive array of employment and day services including job training, employment, life skill training, and community integra-tion opportunities to individuals with disabilities and other barriers to employment and full community inclusion. More than 1,000 individuals are served each year out of locations in Eagan, Red Wing, Zumbrota and Hudson, Wisconsin.

From life skills classes to voca-tional and employment programs, the organization is experienced in identify-ing and working with a person’s needs, strengths and aspirations, helping indi-viduals to lead productive lives. Without the support of a rehabilitative provider such as ProAct, these individuals would most likely experience great difficulty earning a steady income and enhancing their self-sufficiency skills.

All donations support employment, life skills training and community inte-gration activities for the individuals we serve. In addition, donations support vehicle matches needed to secure grant vehicles such as wheelchair-lift buses. More than 95% of the individuals we serve are unable to drive and transpor-tation is essential in providing these important services.

The 1st Annual Tapemark Charity Chal-lenge was a resounding success!

The Challenge is about helping spread the word about the agencies that the Pro-Am supports, and helping to raise a little financial support in the process. The Challenge used GiveMN as its operations arm.

The purpose of GiveMN is to give donors an easy avenue for supporting causes that are near and dear to their hearts — like the Tapemark Charity Pro-Am. Using email and social media, the process is easy, streamlined, and quick!

With the help of the volunteers, golfers, sponsors and other individuals involved with the tournament, the Char-ity Challenge raised a total of $49,188!

This would have not been possible without the help and support of each charity team captain. Each captain had a responsibility to be the main go-to person to lead the charge of fundrais-ing for that particular charity.

Dawn Lampros from The Arc of Minnesota said that the Pro-Am has helped greatly with their organization and contributed tremendously to them. The Dakota Communities’ team captain was Donna Hill.

“Donna has helped a lot with fundraising for The Arc of Minnesota because she knows a lot of people and a lot of people know her,” Lampros said. “We are lucky to have someone who knows and loves us as part of our team.”

For a lot of the charity team cap-tains, being involved and playing in the tournament is very important to them. Doug Hoffmann, the Arc Greater Twin Cities team captain, expressed how much he believes in the tournament.

“My son has developmental dis-abilities so our whole family has been involved with Arc GTC,” Hoffmann said.

Hoffmann also said that having an Arc Advocate is extremely helpful

because everyone in the family benefits from the help that they give their family.

Another team captain, who has benefited from one of the charities such as ProAct, is captain Rich Bordas. Bordas’ son had special needs and Pro-Act has helped his son in many ways.

“I wanted to be involved because of the work Tapemark has done and because of the work that ProAct has done for my son,” Bordas said.

Patrick Tinucci is the team captain for Dakota Communities and has been involved with the Tapemark Pro-Am for many years.

“Our society, my generation and younger generations, have a respon-sibility to keep charities alive and we have to continue this work to take care of others that benefit from this tourna-ment and the charities involved,” said.

From the four different charities involved in this tournament, there was another fundraising team captain to help “rally the troops” and raise the bar on the amount of donations given.

Shaun Irwin of Anderson Agency Insurance was the team captain of Team Shaun. His efforts helped raise funds to benefit the entire effort.

Anderson Agency has been a sponsor of the Tapemark Pro-Am for seven years now. Irwin comments on how easy it is today to support all the charities through vehicles like the Charity Challenge.

“Our service is to folks with developmental disabilities and our economic, governmental, political structure is not set up for the people with developmental disabilities,” Irwin said. “This tournament is a great way for people to be involved and to give back to the communities and people of those communities to show that they support them.”

The Tapemark Charity Pro-Am was founded in 1972 by Bob Klas Sr. and Pat Cody Sr. to raise money for non-profit agencies serving people with developmental and learn-ing disabilities. In their first year, they raised $9,000. Their specific goal in creating the Tapemark Pro-Am included three important requirements they considered essential: that the event be a competitive golf event, that it be repeatable, and that the fundraising results from the tournament be commensurate with the effort to carry out the event. In all 3 areas, Klas and Cody succeeded wildly. Since that first tournament in 1972, the Tapemark Pro-Am has raised and donated more than $6.581,649 to the agencies it supports. It has become one of the four major events for the Minnesota Section of the PGA, and has been won by all the greatest professional players in Minnesota golf history.

The Tapemark Charity Pro-Am is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. And it now includes the only Women’s Pro-Am in the state of Minnesota, and one of the only women’s professional championships in the Midwest. The organization is also licensed to operate two charitable gaming facilities, the West St. Paul Bingo Palace and a pulltab installation at Dunham’s Bar in West St. Paul. These two operations have contributed greatly to the fundraising success of the entire organization.

The Tapemark Charity Pro-Am makes charitable contributions in the form of general operating grants to four organizations; The Arc Greater Twin Cities, The Arc of Minnesota, Dakota Communities, and ProAct. At this time, we do not solicit or accept grants from other organizations. We do, however, encourage everyone we know to offer their generous support to the many worthy non-profits working hard on behalf of people with developmental disabilities.
