Vessel Construction

Forming Steel

The fabrication process beginswith the rolling of steel that meetsASTM specifications. Steel platesfroml/qto 1% inch are rolled toform the rigid shell. Steel Platesare formed, fitted, and weldedcreating a vessel of superiorstrength. Throughout themanufacturing process ri goroustesting and documentationprocedures ensures comPliancewith the most stringent ofindustry standards.

ASME Code Heads

ASME Code heads are usedwhen a vessel is required tobe fabricated to the ASME Code.ASME vessels incorporate theASME 2:1 semi-elliptical headas standard design, makingthem more resistant tointernal pressures.

ASME flanged and dishedheads can also be used butrequire thicknesses greaterthan elliptical heads for thesame oressure and diameter.

Few names in the field of ASME Pressure Vesse/ manufacturing are

as widely respected as Highland Tank. Highly qualified craftsmen, skilled in carbon steel and starnless steel fabrication, take pride intheir work - every weld, grind, and polish is flawless. An author-ized inspection agency monitors all facets of production, so youknow the job is done right the first time, every time.

Welding

Certified welders must be quali-f ied to strict welding proceduresin accordance with ASME Code,Section lX. Their procedures arecontinually monitored and certif i-cations maintained.

Welding Procedures

. Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)

. Shielded Metal Arc Welding(Stick/SMAW)

. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding(Ti9/GTAW)

. Gas Metal Arc Welding(Mig/GMAW)

. Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW)

ASME Code requires f ull penetra-tion butt welds on all vessel jointsand seams. With several approvedwelding methods, Highland em-ploys the one that achieves thisrequirement with the best resultsfor each particular vessel. In addi-tion, the efficiency of a joint isbased on the type of weld andthe degree of radiography used.

Fittings, Flanges, and Manways

Fittings in various sizes and styles(NPT and flange) enable connectionto external piping systems and ap-purtenances. All carbon steel ANSIflanges are rated based on theirclass and temperature; A class 150(150#) flange is rated for 285 psi at100 't but only 170 psi at 500 "F.

Full-fillet welds are used to attachfittings, flanges, and nozzles tovessel shells and heads.

Vessels 36" in diameter and largerare provided with an 11" x 15"elliptical manway for internal accessand inspection. Vessels with internallinings require either a minimum12" x 16" or a 14" x 18" manway.ln addition, 16" , 20", and 24"round manways are available.

ASME Testing and Inspection

Various conventional and ad-vanced nondestructive examina-tion methods are used for theinspection of pressure vessels bycertified inspectors. Visual orSurface Examination detects anydiscontinuities and defects thatare open to the surface or arevery near the surface. In contrast,Spot to 100% Radiography orVolumetric Examination candetect conditions that are locatedwithin the weld or the steel.

ASME pressure vessels are testedto 1.3 times the working pressureas stipulated under Section Vlllof the ASME Code. Additionally, each vessel is filled two-thirds fullof water and tested at the normalworking pressure with all valvesclosed, and shall not lose morethan one-half pound pressure in24 hours. A manufacturing certifi-cate is filed with the inspectiondepartment having jurisdictionthat certifies that the foregoingtests have been made.

Chilled Water Tanks

Applications

Chilled Water Tanks (CWT) areused in conjunction with largeHVAC installations, resulting infewer cycles of the compressorand better temperature controloverall. The chilled water is usedto cool and dehumidify air insizable commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities. At high-tech data centers, chilledwater storage tanks are requiredfor uninterrupted cooling ofcomputer systems and associatedcomponents, such as telecommuni-cations and storage systems.

A properly sized CWT adds thenecessary volume to "buffer" thecooling system and allows it tooperate at peak efficiency. Whenapplied to contemporary chilledthermal storage technology, CWTallow the user to time shift theelectrical load of the system fromthe peak day periods to off peaknight time periods.

Hydropneumatic Tanks

Hydropneumatic Tanks (HPT)are ASME vessels that containboth water and air under ores-sure. The compressed air acts asa cushion that can exert or ab-sorb pressure as required. Asmall air compressor may beused to replenish the air volumeperiodically as it is absorbedinto the water.

Large hydropneumatic tanks areusually horizontal and with vol-umes of 2,000 gallons or more.Normal operating pressure fora water system is 60 to 75 psi.,therefore common design pres-sure for a hydropneumatic tankis 100 psi.

HPT provide an adequate"quick demand" water supplyand help regulate proper sys-tem pressure range, both neces-sary for the efficient operationof a water supply system.

They are used in large capacitypumping systems as "buffertanks" to control surges causedby pump start-ups and shutdownsand absorb water hammer shocksdue to rapid valve actuationseliminating catastrophic failureof pipeline, pumps, valves, andsystem control loss. Other com-mon applications are in wellwater systems and fireprotection systems.

HPT are lined with epoxy orpolyurethane potable waterlinings. They are often locatedaboveground or underground, with one head protruding into a

vault or basement and all of thefittings are located on thathead. Vessels located under-ground are furnished with ad-vanced corrosion protectionsystems utilizing a dielectriccoating and optional cathodicprotection system.

Fire Protection Tanks (FPT)

are hydropneumatic waterstorage tanks specificallydesigned for use in privatef ire protection systems.

These ASME oressure vesselsare required by fire codes inmany commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings foruse with automatic sorinklersystems for fire suppression.FPT are designed, fabricated, tested, inspected, and in-stalled in accordance with theNational Fire Protection Asso-ciation NFPA Standard No. 22,"Water Tanks for PrivateFire Protection."

During normal operation, thisASME oressure vessel is 2/3filled with water and thenpressurized with air to 125 psi.FPT can be located under-ground with all of the fittingslocated on one head that pro-trudes into the basement or a

vault. The outlet flange is lo-cated at the bottom of the ves-sel near this head and projectsa minimum of 4" into the ves-sel. A water-stoo with link-sealprevents water intrusion.

FPT are fully compliant withfactory applied internal andexternal coatings with optionalcathodic protection system onthe buried end of the vessel.

. Rugged and simple designs

. Transportable to remotelocations

. Easy and quick to install

. Shop fabrication minimizesfield instal lation requirements

. Reduced project lead timefrom inception to completion

. Accessible to restricted places

They are impermeable, strongerthan fiberglass tanks, and, as op-posed to concrete or plastic stor-age tanks, even those reinforcedwith fiberglass, they are 100%recyclable.

Compliance

HighDRO@ Tanks are manufac-tured to stringent standards.HighDRO@ Tanks used for storageof clean water are typically ofsing le-wa I led constructioncomplying with recognizedwater tank codes such as:

. American Water WorksAssociation AWWA D100 -"standard for Welded Steel"

. National Fire ProtectionAssociation NFPA StandardNo. 22, "Water Tanks forPrivate Fire Protection"

. National Sanitary Foundation(NSF)

Additional ly, HighDRO@ Tanksused for storage of wastewatercontaining flammable or com-bustible liquids are typicallydouble-walled construction inaccordance with Underwriters'Laboratories Inc. StandardsUL-58, UL-1746, and UL-142.
