“Very St Leonards-on-Sea” is about being inspired, being creative and having fun being

part of a friendly and diverse community. Meet our ‘spirit of St Leonards’ and cover girl, Alice Turner. She is an artist who has recently exhibited in Berlin and Liverpool, a ‘zine’ writer, a puppeteer with Theatre Rotto,

plays in a band called Love Fingers and is a member of the radical feminist group; The Activettes. COVER CREDITS: Alice is wearing a cup and saucer hat by Francis Fifi, top by Kate Bramwell Cole, and vintage skirt by Xanadu. The stylist is Bev Francis. Most world cuisines are well represented in St Leonards-on-Sea and frequented by a happy mix of diners: tourists discovering our lovely seaside promenade and pavement cafes; local creatives and freelancers planning projects and networking over plates, cups and glasses; shoppers looking for refreshment, and spice lovers searching for authentic tastes. Here are some tasting notes.

Starting with spice, Mamma Putt’s African Caribbean Restaurant, Kings Road, is well named after the African roadside chefs who ‘put out’ big hearted home-style

cooking. Cinnamon Spice on Kings Road and Tandoori Ghor, Grand Parade are two out of seven local Indian restaurants. Try out their exceptionally good value banquet nights. Try Chinese at the Lotus on Grand Parade or at Chinese Town on London Road, a firm favourite for a tasty bowl of noodles.

Returning to home grown and special blends, Love Café on Norman Road is summed up by a regular: “Lovely staff, lovely food, lovely environment…it must be

love!” Child friendly and cheerful, the crepes are divine. Little Larder opposite serves big hearty portions in a dinky little space. One London Road is a comfy café serving Deb’s tasty eats. New kid on the block is Moose’s Kitchen on Kings Road, offering vegan and seasonal dishes. Smiths Real Food, Grand Parade, has sea views and an extensive menu. Try out his new posh burgers or classic breakfast items; eggs benedict, kippers and black pudding. Find the newly opened beach café on the seafront, Warrior Square. Next to the play area, it’s perfect for family stopovers. Treat yourself to fresh fish at St Clements, Mercatoria, or finally, try the stylish food served at the Victorian-meets-contemporary-beach-chic at Pier Nine, Eversfield Place.

Finishing off with sweet things, Michala’s Cute Cakes in Shop, Norman Road has a new selection daily. Chocolate salted caramel, rhubarb and champagne are to be enjoyed in this what has been called “the best cake shop in Sussex”.

Stand out Eastern European supermarkets are Moscvichka on Silchester Road and Ruzanna’s Speciality Store on Marina. Both stock a good range of rye breads that are dark and fragrant with caraway seeds. They also have a fantastic range of deli goods such as sausages, hams and cheeses galore and eastern European beers. My favourite are the displays of pickles, stuffed tomatoes, sweet

peppers, forest mushrooms; joy in jars. I wish I had a larder with shelves to display them all. Ruzanna also offers a salad bar and fresh homemade pies such as spinach and cheese, mushroom. Her shop is perfectly located for an impromptu beach picnic.

A short walk along the beach westwards to Bulverhythe, there are the remains of an ancient forest lying half revealed amongst the sands, quite literally the sands of time. Giant trunks and broken branches, denuded root balls and patches of a spongy matrix made up of tiny leaf fragments and forest floor debris, all blackened by age.

These are only revealed by moon-pulled spring tides; sometimes there is a lot to see and at other times, the sand has moved across and

it’s all but disappeared from view. These forest remains date back 7000 years, an auspicious era in our human calendar; ice sheets had melted and Bulverhythe forest sank below the seas. But take yourself across the waters and across Europe to the mighty rivers of the Tigris and the Euphrates. This area, 7000 years ago, was a place termed by historians ‘the cradle of civilization’ and ‘the fertile crescent’ – the fabled

land of Mesopotamia. This is the land and this is the period that probably represents the most dynamic of human development. Tribes settled and invented farming. They then invented irrigation and metal tools; they invented houses and towns and civic society; they invented counting and writing, and even invented record keeping and taxes! And so it all began, slowly and inevitably spreading across the globe and to our shores.

We can take our next history tour but keep our feet dry! Follow the London Road, but before you reach the sea, this time go east down Norman Road and step into Gizem Nur supermarket. A recent wave of human immigration has

arrived at our shores from what was ancient Mesopotamia – now Iraq, Kurdistan and Turkey, bringing with them a fascinating continuation of the first invented foods. My interest was

particularly caught by the variety of packets of humble bulgur. This is thought to be the earliest way that wheat was processed and stored for the winter

meaning it could be traded. The precious grains were simply boiled and crushed and left in the sun to dry. It had two great advantages; bulgur did not attract mould, plus the whole grain was retained so keeping its nutrition. From such simple milestones grew our modern society. In Gizem Nur, we can find here many grades of bulgur; the finest grade is good for salads and tabouli, whilst the coarser grains are good for mixing with meat to make kofta and healthy burgers, or used in pilafs, stews, and even added to bread mixes. Modern day analysis reveals that compared to white rice, bulgur has more protein, more fibre, a lower glycemic index, plus has a raft of B vitamins

and essential minerals. Finally, per serving, it’s cheaper!

On nearby shelves there are dates and honey and all manner of nuts and seeds. Packs of spices seem more appealing without having been diverted through factories and sealed in silly sized glass pots, whilst precious saffron comes in packs with beautiful Arabic script. Brightly coloured vegetables and immense bunches of nutritious flat parsley are neither seasonal nor local, but temptingly exotic. Thursdays at Gizem Nur is delivery day for flat breads which are our earliest form of baking and still made in exactly the same way, stretched dough baked against the side of a clay oven. And to try more of this authentic, ancient cuisine, go next door to Oskar’s Middle Eastern Restaurant. We can buy all these foods from the sterile shelves of a supermarket chain or pay top dollar at a ‘health’ food store, but that is to lose the adventure and the story that these ingredients hold.

The modern world is awash with geopolitical labels and warmongering. However, embedded somewhere in our DNA – or maybe in our shared memory – or in our appetite for exploration, we simply yearn to eat like an ancient.

St Leonards really is a surprising little town where anything might happen, demonstrated most vividly in the music scene. Initially, it may not appear too obvious that St Leonards is home to some internationally acclaimed musicians, producers and artists, but as a town shaped by its creative and enthusiastic inhabitants, the most unlikely things often blossom in quite unexpected places. These are the magical ingredients that make St Leonards such a dynamic and vibrant place to live and work.

The Roomz is one of the longest established venues in the area and offers an incredibly broad range of entertainment thanks to manager David Francis, who is a committed host to his legion of regulars. Expect to experience everything

and anything on any given night, from Wednesday’s Open Mic session, which has cult status, to perhaps a socialist rapper from Mexico City, to free jazz, art-house punk feminists, or world music, local rock bands and a lot more besides. Gigs at The Roomz are normally free though a donation might be asked for, in keeping with David’s egalitarian spirit. Soundscape is a recording studio and rehearsal room downstairs. Record producer, musician, composer and teacher; the multi-talented Darren Morris has his home in the heart of St Leonards. Darren has

been a session musician and programmer with Massive Attack, Little Boots and The Maccabees. He’s produced albums for Horse Meat Disco, Ashley Beedle and Nadia Ksaiba and is currently working with Toby Warren and his St Leonards-based record label Gensing Farm. The stately slope of Norman Road is style central in St Leonards-on-Sea, with a number of unique and fascinating shops that are well worth a visit.

Wayward vintage haberdashery carries a huge selection of bolts of vintage furnishing fabrics: heavy linens, ticking, hand loomed cottons and retro prints.

Shop (top photo), is a fresh take on a department store. Fashion, kitchenware,

A weekend escape should mean leaving behind the humdrum and the stresses of daily life, going from jaded to refreshed and re-energised

Two out of the ordinary places to stay which do just that are St Benedict B&B, Pevensey Road and Marine Court Apartment in Marine Court Building, Marina. Between them, they represent the two eras that define St Leonards-on-Sea; firstly the Georgian/Victorian seaside resort developed for wealthy families, consumptives, and ex-colonials looking to restore vim and vigour; secondly, the Roaring Thirties which is best represented by Marine Court Building, an apartment block and hotel that was a prototype for living glamorously, based on life aboard a luxury cruise liner.

St Benedict is a late Victorian property in a conservation area. It has been meticulously restored from flats back to a home using its 1880 floor plan. More than that, owners Paul and Stephen have brought a flair, wit and considerable taste in re-creating the rooms in high Victorian style. Whilst in most hands, this interior

style would end up oppressive, here the result is simply magnificent and wonderfully comfortable. Hand printed wallpapers, cut crystal, polished silver, deep rich colours and plenty of gold details plus an outstanding garden also make this a great place to book for special events such as anniversary parties.

St Benedict is a perfect base for a leisurely perambulation to take in a variety of nearby architectural styles from Georgian villas to Scottish baronial to neogothic piles set amongst gardens. The Burtons’ St Leonards Society has a small museum and guided tours: burtonsstleonardssociety.co.uk. Alternatively, take a morning constitutional along the promenade.

Take atime trip

A studio apartment with many original 1930s features, including original door handles, heating panel, kitchen (with ’50s additions), and bath room. It has been restored with modern adaptations to give a quirky, boutique atmosphere. The South facing windows look directly onto the sea and promenade.

Built in 1930s, the form of Marine Court Building closely copies the Cunard Liner Queen Mary which represented the fastest, most luxurious ship of its age. At the eastern end, the ‘prow’ is shaped to imitate a ship’s bridge while the upper stories and balconies are stepped back like a ship superstructure. Flats were generally compact like cabins since it was expected that residents would eat and lounge and promenade in other parts of the building. A tunnel led under the road straight to the beach. The ‘waterline’ was marked by a canopy with shops below coloured black. Balconies imitated promenade decking and the whole was adorned with giant flag poles.

For many years, the building has slowly languished and deteriorated. Author Iain Sinclair was inspired to write psycho-geographic novel ‘Dining on Stones’ which explored the topography and psychosis of places as dominating the narrative. Take time to find and absorb traces from a past era of ideas and ghosts. Today theprow of the ship, what was the ballroom, now houses a local technology company, Beamings, which somehow seems nicely appropriate.

Rent Marine Court Apartment to recapture the flavour of the times. Its generous space contains many original and restored details such as the bathroom and kitchen décor, even door handles. This is a great place to

have a beach-based break, kick back and watch the sunsets.

Explore the whole 1930s seafront development which was spearheaded by Borough engineer Sidney Little, nicknamed ‘The Concrete King’. His intention was to sweep away the fusty

Victoriana and replace it with scientific modern materials and methods, and above all, lots of concrete. Trailblazing at the time, a double deck promenade was built with shelters and walls decorated with panels of mosaiced recycled glass; look out for sun traps and a sun lounge, now Azur.

He also designed a one thousand foot underground car park with parking for 200 cars that was the earliest in the country, and finally, an Olympic sized Lido, now demolished, which marked the western end of the pleasure parade.
