Station AuditStation Audit is the process to analyse the station and its components with the design parameters and design standards by physical survey of the stations. To check the level of service of the metro station after preparing design criteria of the key components the metro station, physical survey of the different metro station of different region of India has been done. To check level of service of metro stations two different region of metro stations are physically surveyed:1. Metro stations of Mumbai2. Metro stations of Delhi

1. Metro stations of MumbaiMumbai is the financial capital of India. Average trip rate is very high in the Mumbai. The main Transit System is local trains in the Mumbai. Besides the route of the local trains, to cater high passenger flow Mass Rapid Transit System (MRT) has been introduced. There is only one metro route is working in the Mumbai which is from Versova to Ghatkopar. As only one metro line is working in Mumbai there is no interchange metro station in Mumbai.

2. Metro Stations of DelhiDelhi is the Capital of India. Delhi has the largest metro network working in India. Metro is the main Public transport system mode in the Delhi. There are different metro lines of different routes: Yellow line, Red line, Green line, Blue line, Violet lie, Express Link. Because of these lines are intersecting with other lines at many junctions there are interchange metro stations in Delhi where huge passengers are transferring from one metro line to other metro line.

FIGURE: Metro Lines in Delhi

VersovaVersova is the end station of the only working line of metro route from Versova to Ghatkopar in Mumbai. Versova is a terminal station. It is an elevated metro station. As it is the last station of the metro line, the passenger flow on each platform is unidirectional. Versova metro station has concourse level on first floor and platform at second floor.Catchment area: Jai Prakash road, Seven Bungalows, Model town, G7 mall, New Versova link road, Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani HospitalStation Entries

FIGURE: Different entries for metro station at Versova metro stationThere are different entries for enter and exit to metro station of Versova from ground level. Entry from gate 1 is from seven bungalow road bus station which has staircase to enter the metro station. Entry from gate 2 is from Model Town road which has escalator for upward movement to enter the station. Entry from gate 3 is at same side but it has kiss & ride facility for the auto rickshaws. There is a staircase provision to enter the station at gate 3. Entry from gate 4 and gate 5 is towards New Versova road. Entry gate 4 has a provision of escalator for upward movement to enter the station. Entry from gate 5 has staircase provision to enter the station. For gate 5 entry has kiss & ride facility for private vehicles. At this entry auto rickshaw parking is prohibited. Entry from gate 6 is toward seven bungalow road. It has kiss & ride facility for auto rickshaws. There are two elevators for handicapped people to reach the metro station from the ground level on the both side of road. The capacity of the elevator is 8 passenger per car. There are two ramps at the elevator entry so that handicapped passengers can easily access to the elevators. The slope for the ramp is 1:20 There are two escalators for upward movement. Passengers usually use escalator to reach concourse level of the station and use stairs for downward movement.

Components of StationStation components includes platform, vertical circulation elements ( escalators, stairs, lifts, ramps), Automatic fare collection system, station offices, paid zone, unpaid zone, ticket office, customer care office, ticket vending machines, different stores etc.

FIGURE: Components on the concourse level at Versova metro stationOn the concourse floor, there are two side AFC gate entries which divided the whole concourse floor in two parts: Paid zone and unpaid zone. For both the entry there are provision of ticket offices. Vertical circulation elements are in the paid zone to reach the platform level. There are station office, security office, first aid room and other retail shops like WH smith and some food stalls like Havmor on the concourse floor.

FIGURE: Components on Platform level at Versova metro stationPlatform geometry in Versova metro station is side platforms. Railway track is in the centre of platform level and both side are platforms. Platform contains edge strip and warning strip in yellow colour for safety purpose. There are some seating provision for old passengers for waiting the train in waiting areas.

Platform Table: Audited result of components of platform level at Versova metro stationComponentDesign criteriaAudited resultRemark

Platform lengthFor 6 car metro it should be min 160 m

181 m

4 car metro is existing working and 6 car metro train is proposed a passenger trip demand will increase

Platform widthMin 3.5 mIt includes platform edge strip of 500 mm and warning strip min 485 mm

3.5 m it includes platform edge strip and warning strip

As trip demand is relatively less better level of service can be achieved by this width

Waiting Area2 waiting areas of 6.25 sqm and 10 sqm

For observed passengers movement it is sufficient

Seating facility4 seats in each waiting area

For non-peak hour train comes after every 7 min so more seating provision is required

Level of ServiceLOS CPlatform 1: LOS BPlatform 2: LOS CLevel of service for both the platforms are good and they are less congested.

Platform geometry of Versova metro station is side platform. Platform 1 is toward Ghatkopar and platform 1 is toward Versova. As it is terminal station unidirectional movement of passengers is done on both the platforms. On platform 1 only upward passenger movement is done to board the train and on platform 2 only downward passenger movement is done after departure from train to reach exit of the station.Space distribution per meter for pedestrian on platform 1 is 2.53 sq m which is fruin level of service B and for platform 2 it is 2.05 sq m which is fruin level of service C.

Vertical Circulation Elements (VCEs)Vertical circulation elements (VCEs) are used to change the level in the station. For Versova metro station there are two changing levels: 1. Ground level to concourse level2. Concourse level to platform levelTable: Audited result of VCEs from ground level to concourse level at Versova metro stationComponentAudited resultRemark

Escalator

No of escalators2Both the escalators are in upward movement direction so people can easily reach to concourse floor. There is no downward escalator from concourse to ground

Capacity80-90 passenger/min

Elevator

No of escalators2The location of both elevators are very good so that handicap people can easily access to the AFC gates. There is less movement of passengers from ground to concourse but comparatively high from concourse to ground as there is no downward escalator

Capacity8 passenger/min

LocationOn the both side of road

Ramps

No of ramps2There are two ramps at the ground level to reach the elevator. The slope of ramp is 1 in 20 which is very easy for circulation of handicap people

LocationAt both elevator entry

Stairs

No of stairs4here are 4 stairs at each end of station and there are the major flow of passengers because of no downward escalators

Escalator

No of escalator2 (downward)2 (upward)As it is the last station there is only single passenger movement on each side. Trip demand is not much high and it is only in single direction so that Level of Service of escalator is very good

Capacity80-90 passenger/min80-90 passenger/min

Elevator

No of elevator11The location of both elevators are very good so that handicap people can easily access from the AFC gates. And elevator are in the centre of the station so on platform passengers from elevator should have minimum distance to travel to board the train.

Capacity8 passenger/car8 passenger/car

LocationNear AFC gatesNear AFC gates

Stairs

No of stairs2 with escalators1 separate stair1 emergency stair

2 with escalators1 separate stair1 emergency stair

There are 4 stairs at each end of station. Very less people are using the stairs for regular circulation as there is less congestion even in the peak time. Mainly they are used in emergency situation like break down or fire

Generally passengers prefer escalators for upward directional movement. Very less passengers use stairs for upward movement in both level. Location of the elevators are very good. On the concourse floor they open near the AFC entry gate and after AFC gate entry they located near AFC and centre of the concourse floor. On the platform level elevators are open in the middle of the rail track so handicapped passengers have to travel very less to board the train.

Automatic Fare Collection System Automatic Fate collection system consists AFC entry gates, AFC exit gates, ticket office, ticket vending machines, costumer care office and security check at AFC gates with metal check detectors and luggage scanning machines.Table: Audited result of AFC system at Versova metro stationComponentAudited resultRemark

Exit gates63 on both side entry

Handicapped passenger gates2 for entry2 for exitOn both side 1 entry and 1 exit handicap gate

Passenger flow26 passengers/ minSmart card operation time is 0.8 s as per design and to pass the passenger the average time per passenger is around 2 s to pass gate

Ticket office2 1 for each side. In each ticket office capacity of 4 ticket operator from which 2 are working on each side

Ticket vending machine2It is only on one side near the lift opening on concourse level

Customer care office2t is well situated between entry and exit AFC gates

SecurityBody checkLuggage checkSecurity is very good at each entry gates

Waiting period at AFCNot more than a minuteAs the passenger flow is unidirectional and not high AFC operation is very efficient

As per design guidelines passenger flow at the AFC gates should be 30-32 passengers per minute but passenger flow at AFC gate is 26 passengers per minute is observed. For the entry gate there is a security check of each passengers so passenger flow at entry gate is very much low. There are two ticket office at both the entry of the station. Use of ticket vending machine by passengers is very less.

CirculationIn this section typical horizontal circulation of the passengers in the metro station premises is shown in both the levels: concourse level and platform level

FIGURE: Horizontal circulation of passengers on concourse level at Versova metro stationIn figure the horizontal movement of passengers on the concourse level from entry from ground level to reach the platform level to board train is shown. Passengers come from different entries and buy tickets from ticket office or ticket vending machines. Then they pass through AFC entry gates where their security check with metal detectors and luggage scanning machine is done. From the AFC gates they walk towards platform where they have to board the train. To reach platform they use different VCEs and their movement is shown in figure.

FIGURE: Horizontal circulation of passengers on concourse level at Versova metro stationIn this figure horizontal movement of passengers on platform level is shown. Passengers reach to platform level by using stairs, escalators or elevators and board the train. The width of platform is sufficient to have smooth passenger flow.

Level of Service (LOS)After auditing all the key components of the Versova metro station, Level of Services of key components like platform, VCEs and AFC are calculated. As for vertical circulation, it is observed that maximum passengers prefer escalators to change the level. Passengers for downward directional movement use stairs but for upward directional movement use of stairs is very less and the capacity of elevator is very low. So maximum passenger flow is come to escalators so that LOS of escalators are very important.1. LOS of PlatformsPlatform 1: LOS BPlatform 2: LOS C2. LOS for Escalators and AFC gates

FIGURE: LOS of escalators and AFC exit gates at Versova metro stationIn the figure Level of Services for the escalators and AFC exit gates has been shown. Level of Service for downward movement escalators from platform 2 is very good. The passenger flow is very good and congestion is very less. Level of service for upward directional escalators are poor because there are two upward directional escalators. Present passenger flow coming to the escalator is very low. Here LOS 3 indicates that escalators for upward directional movements are in outnumbers. Average passenger delay on both the AFC gates has been calculated by cumulative delay of total passengers and divide them to total passengers. Average delay of passengers at each AFC exit is 26.45 second and 20.7 second which is good.Delay in time to reach station exit from platform in peak hour at Versova metro station
