Term Definition

Adverseimpact Negativeeffectthatgoesagainstdesiredconditions.Whendecidingwhetheradverse

impactsneedtobeaddressedtoachievetheResponsibleSteelStandard,steelmaking

sitesshouldconsiderhowmaterialtheiradverseimpactsare.Materialityhastwo

dimensions:Thesignificancethatthesite'sstakeholdersattributetotheissueandthe

significanceoftheconsequencesofthesteelmaker'simpacts,forexampleonthe

environmentoronhumanrights.

Appeal Requestbytheprovideroftheobjectofconformityassessment(i.e.thecertification

client)totheconformityassessmentbodyoraccreditationbodyforreconsiderationby

thatbodyofadecisionithasmaderelatingtothatobject.

Auditscope Theimpactsofasteelsiteextendbeyondthegatesofitspropertyandbeyondthe

facilitiesandassociatedactivitiesunderitscontrol.Theauditscopecapturesthis

extendedresponsibilityanddescribestheareaofinfluencethatwillbeconsidered

duringtheaudit.

Biodiversity Biodiversity-shortforbiologicaldiversity-meansthediversityoflifeinallitsforms-

thediversityofspecies,ofgeneticvariationswithinonespecies,andofecosystems.

Carbondioxide

Carbonintensityof

electricityTheCO2emissionsproducedperkilowatthourofelectricityconsumed.

Catchment Thegeographicalzoneinwhichwateriscaptured,flowsthroughandeventually

dischargesatoneormorepoints.Theconceptincludesbothsurfacewatercatchment

andgroundwatercatchment.Asurfacewatercatchmentisdefinedbytheareaofland

fromwhichallprecipitationreceivedflowsthroughasequenceofstreamsandrivers

towardsasinglerivermouth,asatributarytoalargerriver,ortothesea.A

groundwatercatchmentisdefinedbygeologicalstructureofanaquiferand

beexposedtohigherconcentrationofhydrogensulphide,theriskisgreatereven

thoughthepropertiesofhydrogensulphideareunchanging.

Humanrightsabuses Theseoccurwhenactionsviolate,ignoreordenyhumanrights,includingcivil,political,

Incident Inrelationtooccupationalhealthandsafety:Occurrencearisingoutof,orduring,work

thatcouldordoesresultininjuryandillhealth.Anincidentwhereinjuryandillhealth

occursissometimesreferredtoasan“accident”.

Indigenousand

community-conserved

areas(ICCAs)

Territoriesandareasconservedbyindigenouspeoplesandlocalcommunities.ICCAs

achieveconservationofspeciesandthenaturalenvironment,togetherwithothersocial

andculturalobjectives.ICCAssharethefollowingthreecharacteristics:

Apeopleorcommunityiscloselyconnectedtoawell-definedterritory,areaorspecies

(e.g.becauseofsurvivalanddependenceforlivelihood,becauseofhistoricaland

culturalreasons);

Thecommunityisthemajorplayerindecision-making(governance)and

implementationregardingthemanagementoftheterritory,areaorspecies,implying

thatacommunityinstitutionhasthecapacitytodevelopandenforceregulations(in

manysituationsotherstakeholdersareinvolved,butprimarydecision-makingrestsde

factowiththecommunity);

Thecommunitymanagementdecisionsandeffortsleadtotheconservationofthe
