How it started... Derek Brickell had been working for HJ Asmuss (the company founded by his great grandfather which has been distributing steel pipe fittings for nearly 100 years.) when in 1991 he saw an opportunity to develop the NZ market for plastic pipe, fittings and valves for industry. The use of plastic in industry was new then, so Asmuss Plastic Systems was started, with the support of the parent company and the by-line “Innovative Technology / Practical Solutions.” The first product was ABS pipe from Australia. Valves from +GF+ Georg Fischer Switzerland, (who had previously supplied Derek’s great grandfather with malleable iron fittings) were introduced, followed by schedule 80 PVC & CPVC pipe and fittings from USA. Polyethylene fittings and ABS were sourced from GPS in the UK and we still source our ABS from Durapipe (formally GPS) today. Many more systems were added over the years which enabled Plastic Systems, in partnership with its suppliers, to keep its pre-eminent position in servicing many different sectors of the NZ market. Setting the site standard in the Dairy Industry and Water Treatment The dairy industry installs kilometres of stainless steel in their processing plants and they naturally displayed some trepidation when Plastic Systems introduced an industrial range of plastic systems. In fact specialist plastics are by far more durable than metal piping in corrosive chemical applications. Our Darren Wintour and Bruno Meier from +GF+ piping systems Georg Fischer met with engineers at the Whareroa site which was Kiwi Dairy at the time and the rest is history. Today +GF+ piping systems are the site standard for many local authorities (including Watercare) in their water and wastewater treatment plants. In most primary industries some water treatment is required and hazardous chemicals are used throughout the plant. You will find Plastic Systems today Plastic Systems now employ 26 full time employees based in Albany, Mt Wellington and Christchurch. Our focus is still the same; offering full technical and logistical support for the systems we provide. Where to from here Pioneering new solutions for new challenges, some not yet realised. We are seeing more emphasis on health and safety in the workplace with dual containment and automation becoming more commonplace and a greater awareness for using the appropriate piping materials when handling hazardous chemicals. Green star and energy efficient materials are being considered more for our high end apartments, commercial and civil buildings. The concept design of Hospitals, Universities, Airports and Prisons are changing. We look for smart, environmentally friendly, specialist water treatment, plumbing, drainage and climate control systems that will meet our needs. Trenchless technologies and fusible plastic piping systems are more preferable as our suppliers increase their capability to produce large bore pipe, fittings and equipment to install them. We will review the way we reach and connect with our customers as new generations more used to sourcing information via electronic media enter and rise through the work force. Some things won’t change though, we will continue to be a responsible employer and partner with suppliers who have the same business philosophy as ours. We will strive to be easy to do business with, continuing with the by-line Innovative Technology – Practical Solutions. We look forward to the next 25 years and beyond. INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS Pioneering Butt Welding Technology In 1996 Marley NZ was awarded the supply contract for a 10 kilometre 450mm PE pipeline to supply cooling water from the Patea river for the Stratford Natural Gas Power Station. Back then there were no contractors with proven experience with PE Welding and off shore contractors were being considered. After providing competency details to meet the project specification Plastic Systems were awarded the project and proved their capability in the welding of the pipeline. Twenty years on Plastic Systems are still at the forefront on PE jointing technology providing certified welding training, tooling, welding machines and one of the most comprehensive jointing range of fittings in NZ. We partner with reputable innovative suppliers such as Plasson and Simona providing PE jointing solutions for every connection for every application.
