THE CITY #THECITY#

Close to Lake Garda, Verona is a city ofrare beauty, set back against the hills tothe north and laid out harmoniously alongthe smooth curves of the Adige river.Founded as a commercial and politicaltown in Roman times, traces of this periodremain with the massive Arena, the Romantheatre, the Gavi Arch and the Borsarigate, as well as the archeological area ofPorta Leoni and that of the Scaligeriexcavations. Large sections of the ancientwalls are still standing and they bearwitness – along with the monumentalgates and other fortifications – to thestrategic importance of the city.

Yet, the whole centre of Verona is wellworth visiting, with its rich collections ofchurches and palaces. Crowds flock to thehouse and tomb of Juliet, whose tragiclove-story with Romeo was immortalisedby William Shakespeare. Verona is also fullof prestigious cultural institutions, from theancient Civic Capitolare Library to theuniversity and the oldest Music academy inthe world. The Fondazione Arena has beenproducing stunning opera productions forits 15,000 capacity audience for over ahundred years, and every summer aninternational crowd packs the open-airtheatre to cheer each performance.

BARS & NIGHTLIFE #BARSANDNIGHTLIFE#

People in Verona - and in the north-East ofItaly in general – like to meet in osteria(canteen) during the day and drink wine(white from midday till late afternoon andred in the evening). Hence the (false) myththat people in this area are often drunk –in fact they usually limit themselves to justa glass or two all day and always combinetheir wine with canapés, salami and othersnacks.

In the winter and spring Verona’s night lifeis quite quiet, and if you want to meetpeople you will need to visit an osteria ortry the clubs and discos. In summer thingsliven up as many people choose to sitoutside or walk through the streets of thecity centre.

Osteria MondodoroHere there is a great wine list and verytasty canapés with cheese, salami and
