    He was the most important

    painter in Dutch history.

    He became an important artistfrom a very young age, and

    he was famous throughout his

    life for his self-portraits, Bibles

    scenes, and portraits of others

    from his time.

    Rembrandtvan Rijn He was born on July 15,

    1606 in Leiden,

    Netherlands.

    In 1634 he married Saskia

    van Uylenburg. She died a

    few years after in 1642.

    Saskia and Rembrandt

    had four children, of whom

    only the last, Titus,

    survived to adulthood.

    He died on October 4,1669 in Amsterdam.

    The Night Watch

    After Saskiasdeath Rembrandt made one of his mostfamous paintings, The Night Watch.

    Its proper title is The Company of Frans Banning Cocqand Wilhem van Ruytenburch

    Its current location is the Rijksmusem in Amsterdam.

    Its known for three things, its large size (3.63x4.37 mts.),the effective use of chiaroscuro, and the perception ofmotion in a military portrait.

    The girl holds the symbols of the company, the claws of adead chicken, a goblet, and a yellow dress, which signifiesvictory.

    Jan Vermeer Johannes Vermeer was born in Delft,

    Netherlands, in 1632.

    His father was an art dealer, andbecause of that Vermeer became

    interested in art at an early age.

    Later, in 1652 he took the place of his

    father in the business.

    He married a girl named CatherinaBolenes. Together they had 14

    children.

    As an artist, he was famous for his

    portraits of everyday people. Some of

    these include: Girl with a PearlEarring, The Milkmaid, Woman with a

    Pearl Necklace, A Maid Sleeping, A

    Lady Writing.

    Girl with aPearl Earring Vermeersmost famous

    painting.

    It was painted in 1665.

    It is nicknamed The DutchMona Lisa.

    Very little is known about it,

    which adds to its mystery.

    Nobody knows who the sitterwas, or why Vermeer painted

    it.

    It was rediscovered in 1881.

    Peter PaulRubens

    He was a Flemish Baroque painter, born in Siegen, Germany, in

    1577. He is well known for his paintings of Catholic scenes. His

    works are characterized by movement, color, and deep emotion.

    Rubens was not only a very good painter, but he was also a

    diplomat, and scholar. He spent a lot of his life travelling between

    Spain, Italy, and Antwerp. These travels had a large influence in hispaintings.

    Rubens

    Rubens made many

    paintings through his life.

    Most of Rubens paintings

    are Religious scenes,

    portraits, and mythological

    scenes. He was fond of painting full

    bodied women, and strong

    muscular men.

    Some of his paintingsinclude: The Lion Hunt, The

    Three Graces,Venus at the

    Mirror, The Massacre of the

    Innocent, and the Descentfrom the Cross.
