About theVeritasOperationsManagerStorage InsightAdd-on for Deep Array Discovery and Mapping

Veritas Operations Manager Storage Insight Add-on for Deep Array DiscoveryandMapping, with its deep array discovery capabilities, provides you the detailedinformation on the storage enclosures in the datacenter. The Storage InsightAdd-on lets you view the detailed storage information on an enclosure to the levelof adapters and disks. Also, you can perform storage management operations onthe level of adapters and disks.

This version of the Storage InsightAdd-on is supported only onVeritasOperationsManager versions 4.0, and later.

As part of its deep array discovery capabilities, the Storage Insight Add-on letsyou manage the following enclosures:

Storage InsightAdd-onuses theHiCommandserver to gather the information.

HITACHI

Storage Insight Add-on uses the XCLI utilitythat communicates to the IBM XIV systemsusing the TCP/IP protocol to gather theinformation.

IBM XIV

Storage Insight Add-on uses the SymCLIutilities to gather the information.

EMC Symmetrix

Storage Insight Add-on uses the NavisecCLIutility to gather the information.

EMC CLARiiON

Storage InsightAdd-onuses theNetAppDataONTAP SDK interface utility to gather theinformation.

NetApp

You must configure deep array discovery on the following enclosures to get thedeeper information:

■ HITACHI

■ IBM XIV

■ EMC Symmetrix

■ EMC CLARiiON

■ NetApp

After you configure deep discovery for these enclosures, the discovery happensonce every six hours and the Veritas Operations Manager database is updatedaccordingly.

Note: To perform deep array discovery of enclosures, you require the access tostorage views and operations.

After the Storage Insight Add-on performs the deep discovery of enclosures, youcan view the following types additional information on the details page of eachenclosure:

Apart from providing deeper insight on your enclosures, the Storage InsightAdd-on also lets you define the tiers for the LUNs in the datacenter. The tieringof LUNs supports the Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM), which managesthe data by putting them into different types of storagemedia according to variousparameters. Also, the Storage Insight Add-on lets you perform the maintenanceof theDynamicMultipathing (DMP) paths in the level of array ports and adapters.

Configuring deep discovery for HITACHI storageenclosures

TheVeritasOperationsManager Storage InsightAdd-on forDeepArrayDiscoveryandMapping provides you detailed information on the storage enclosures in yourdatacenter. By bringing you the information to the level of adapters and disks, the Storage Insight Add-on helps you understand your storage enclosures in amuch deeper level.

Aspart of its deep arraydiscovery capabilities, theStorage InsightAdd-onprovidesyou options to understand the HITACHI enclosures in your datacenter in a betterway. The Storage Insight Add-on makes use of the HiCommand server that isconnected to a host, which you can designate as the control host to get theinformation from HITACHI enclosures. This host need not be a part of theManagement Server. The HITACHI Agentlet that resides on the ManagementServer pushes the application programming interface (API) to the control host toget the information from the HiCommand server using XML. The control hostexecutes the commands to collect the information on the enclosures. This

information, which is brought to the Management Server, is parsed and put inthe Veritas Operations Manager database.

After the Storage Insight Add-on performs the deep discovery of HITACHIenclosures, you can view the following additional information on the details pageof a HITACHI enclosure:

■ LDEVs (Logical Devices)

■ PDEVs (Physical Devices)

■ Array Groups

To perform this operation, you must have the domain administrator privilege, with an access to the storage views and operations.

Managing tiers for the LUNs

This chapter includes the following topics:

■ Creating tier definitions for LUNs

■ Modifying the tier definitions for LUNs

■ Deleting the tier definitions for LUNs

■ Refreshing the tier information

■ Modifying the tier levels

Creating tier definitions for LUNsApart from providing deeper insight on your enclosures, the Veritas OperationsManager Storage Insight Add-on for Deep Array Discovery andMapping also letsyou define the tiers for the LUNs in your datacenter. The tiering of LUNs supportsthe Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) which manages the data by puttingthem into different types of storagemedia according to various parameters. Apartfrom moving data across different storage devices, Veritas Operations Manageruses LUN tiering for provisioning the storage.

Veritas Operations Manager lets you define the tiers for the LUNs based one ormore of the following parameters:

■ Enclosures

■ Vendor and product model

■ RAID level of a LUN

■ Underlying media of the disk from where the LUN has been created

■ Thin type of the LUN

■ The replication status of the LUN

2Chapter

Page 30: Veritas™ Operations Manager Storage Insight Add-on …static-sort.symanteccloud.com/public/documents/vom/4.0/windowsand... · Veritas™ Operations Manager Storage Insight Add-on

Whenyoudefine tiers for the LUNsbased on these parameters, VeritasOperationsManager stores these definitions as rules in the Management Server. VeritasOperations Manager changes the tier definitions automatically when theseparameters change.

In certain circumstances, multiple tier definitions can be applicable to a LUN. Insuch cases, Veritas Operations Manager Storage Insight Add-on for Deep ArrayDiscovery and Mapping looks for the highest order of the tier and assigns it tothe LUN.

To define the tiers for a LUN, you must have the domain administrator privilege.
