Armbruster Action

Inside the Newsletter The Fifth Annual 2006 Armbruster is in the record books as being the largest participating Armbruster to date; September 20-23, 2006. Set in the southeastern part of the state of Ohio, The American Electric Power (AEP) Company has developed an Outdoor Recreation area from a once strip-mined coal area. This 42,000 acre reclamation project has had 63 million trees and over 350 lakes and ponds developed for wildlife and recreation. It was a spectacular site for the running of this years Armbruster.

This year handlers, judges and spectators and supporters traveled from across the United States, Canada, Germany, and Argentina to gather in Zanesville Ohio for the running of the Armbruster. The Great Lakes Chapter Board and Planning Committee headed by Dan Crusey along with the Armbruster Committee did an outstanding job of hosting the event in this region. “The running of the HZP, the social events and seminars were all top-notch; demonstrating the organization skills and teamwork that has made the Chapter so popular and progressive,” according to Bryon Beaton, GNA Chairman.

Test Schedule 25 This year, the Armbruster was directed by Jim Wion, Test Director and Lynn Whiteley Breed Show Director. Dan Crusey was the test coordinator and organizer for the host Great Lakes Chapter event. It was also supported by 2 German Judges, along with Canadian Judges within its cast of 4 Field Judging Teams and 2 Water Judging Teams. Nine Judge Apprentices were also present to gain much international experience in both performance and show.

The Saturday review showed that 26 DD’s had completed all components of both performance and coat and confirmation activities with satisfactory scores. Duke vom Büffeltaler handled by Donald Zarra of the Atlantic Chapter was determined to be high point dog with 205.5 Armbruster points. He was followed by Assia vom nördlichen Platte who was handled by Wolf Schmidt-Korby of Germany and owned and trained by Marge Green. Wolf was also present as a representative of the JGHV and provided the information to the judges on new rules and an apprentice lecture at the Armbruster. Third place was awarded to Askan vom Entenmoor of the Heartland Chapter. Congratulations go out to all the participants for a job well done. The ranking list of the Armbruster is located in another section of this Newsletter.

Armbruster’s Best Looking

The Armbruster HZP combines both a HZP Performance test along with a Breedshow to determine the high point dog. There are times, that the “high point dog” may be determined by a strong contribution to its Breedshow score as well as its performance rating. The Breedshow score consists of two scores, one in confirmation and one in coat. These two scores are averaged into one score that is added to the HZP score to obtain a Armbruster score. In recognition of a DD’s Breedshow score, Roger Green has for the last 5 years donated and sponsored the breedshow trophies in the Armbruster. This years Armbruster trophies were presented to female Dora vom Bartigjäger handled by Sebastian Eder of Argentina, and male Artos vom Kräherwald handled by Bryon Beaton. Hegewald Report 2006 Corey Humbarger Wayne Jeffers Shane Deford By Paul Trout Gary Stephens Ned and Ginny Sorley made the long journey to Geseke,

Germany this fall for the Hegewald International Huzprufingt test. The Sorleys, first traveled to Amsterdam on Sunday prior to the test and then drove over to Germany to stay with Andre van Akin and Ines Obel. For the next couple of days, they enjoyed the local sights and Andre and Ned conspired on handling Grace vom Orion (Gabby) in the test and introducing her to hare tracks, German style. Wednesday was registration day and Ned and Ginny, myself, Thomas Witmarsch, Raffi Barbarian, Dan and Bev Ritter and Jack and Jim Wilson all descended on the castle that was test headquarters. We renewed international friendships and put the eyeball to the contestants. I would go with the Spaniards and follow Sven Bielfeldt’s two dogs in the field, Ned and Ginny would go and do the breedshow first, and in the afternoon, they were to be first up in the water. Raffi would follow his puppy, Bagira vom Konigsaue, handled by Reinhard Hermann, Jack and Jim would follow their favorites for the first day and Thomas of course, would judge field work.

Fred Turjan Roger Green

Thursday dawned clear and warm, after a full field day I met the crew back at the test HQ, during debriefing of the bunch we discovered that Ned and Ginny seemed in a fine mood, so we demanded their story, shortly Ned shyly admitted, that Gabby had earned 12 behind the duck and we then gave international notice of the High Five! Raffi’s pup (10months) was all very good’s in the field, and we retired early for the next day’s events.

25 year Pin Recipients According to Bernd Grabert, VDD Business Manager the following persons have belonged to VDD-GNA for 25 years. They were recognized and awarded their pins at the Armbruster.

Sjoerd Wiegerinck, of Netherlands, was convinced to use his GPS to get Ned, Ginny, Gabby and myself to the field site for Friday morning. During the day, his German to English skills was invaluable. In midday, the 30 C temps made field work a challenge. But Gabby and Ned remembered Andre’s coaching. A 9, in two tough tracks and 11’s the rest of the way earned her 20th place, in the 2006 Hegewald! Raffi’s pup was 69th and one of the youngest dogs ever to complete the Hegewald test!

Ken E. Gill The Hegewald this year was won by Ute Jockims, Ute ran two V litter vom Liether Moor females, at 15 months old, Vella won with a 12 in hare track and 12 x 12 in the breedshow. She then added most beautiful female award to her Hegewald. Vella’s littermate, Venus was 11 x 12 and was third in the most beautiful female. And Uri vom Liether Moor, handled by Dieter Jockims was the best male, 12 x 12. Liether Moor and the Jockims made a statement in Geseke. My personal favorite of the females was Cessy vom Bandorfer- Forst. She was 11 x 12, second most beautiful female and she glided over the ground. Her movement was a joy to watch.

Congratulations to all members receiving their due recognition for being active participants in GNA activities. Saturday morning, we were treated to a beautiful Mass in

the courtyard of the castle. Then we moved to the park for the dog parade and the continued enjoyment of summer warm weather. C litter vom Bandorfer-Forst was judged the best litter. I believe Sven popped a couple of buttons off the coat, on that one. After lunch, we all napped and

Chairman’s Comments then the evening festivities followed. The next day, we said good byes and started the long journey home. ED. Note: Paul Trout is the breeder of Gabby vom Orion and is from Idaho.

There are three items I want to be sure to advise you of in this issue of the Newsletter.

Sorley Shows in Germany The first involves what is somewhat of a mystery to the majority of members and usually invokes a quizzical look when it’s mentioned- “The Elk Fund”. What is the Elk Fund? I’ll give you the background. About 11 years ago GNA became the recipient of a Wyoming Elk Hunting License courtesy of Roger Green; at that time a Wyoming Game Commissioner. That license was auctioned to the highest bidder on E-bay along with several additional licenses during the following years. Each license produced a sizeable amount that was earmarked for a special account with the dedicated purpose of advancing our judging staff’s knowledge by assisting judges and apprentices with their expenses when traveling to Germany and participating in tests in that country. The fund was derived solely from the sale of the Elk Licenses and has not benefited in any manner from membership dues or fees. As such, its funds are managed and directed, by GNA’s Executive Committee, towards advancing qualified judges and apprentices experience by assisting with their travel expenses to Germany during the German testing seasons.

We have had only a small number of judges and

apprentices able to devote themselves to the “German Experience” during the past 10 years. Perhaps that’s due to the anticipated travel costs and the uncertainty of arranging transportation and lodging that will coincide with testing dates in another country. My friends, help is available! Both GNA and friends in Germany are

promoting judging opportunities with our sister Groups. Wolf Schmidt-Körby and Uli Augstein; two very helpful friends who visited us and participated in this year’s Armbruster, have encouraged us to promote judging experience with their Groups. Both men have volunteered to arrange for accommodations and travel assistance and will help schedule a judge’s trip so our judges can be involved in several tests during as little as a 10 day visit.

Ned and Ginny Sorley with Grace (Gabby) vom Orion in Geseke, Germany at the Hegewald.

2007 Hegewald Dates Set The 2007 Hegewald dates are set for next year. The Group Schleswig-Holstein will be hosting the event. The dates for the Hegewald 2007: 03.10.2007 - 07.10.2007

2007 Armbruster Dates Set Get those puppies ready now! To improve GNA’s promotion and coordination of this important project, past Chairman Roger Green has agreed to serve as coordinator of our Judge’s Study in Germany program. I don’t know of anyone in GNA who has more contacts in Germany, more experience in understanding the German testing system, and more knowledge of travel arrangements than Roger. I’m grateful that

The 2007 Armbruster dates have been set. The Host Chapter Midwest North reports that the dates will be September 19-22, 2007. the location is at Kelley Farms a 3200-acre privately owned working ranch which is conveniently located 30 minutes from the Minneapolis, Minnesota airport. Kelley Farms has a 35 year history of hosting numerous National retriever and pointing dog trials. The grounds will provide you and your dog excellent field opportunities along with very challenging water sites. More information will be forthcoming in this Newsletter and future Newsletters.

he will be devoting some of his “retirement” time to assist in the expansion of the program he initiated. The second item that many of you will find interesting, and one that will likely inspire many others, is the JGHV website; www.jghv.de or, you can link to it directly from the Links section of GNA’s website. Once there you’ll see that the JGHV now has many of the Association’s documents

Page 9: Verein Deutsch Drahthaar/Group North America - vddgnaoldsite.vdd-gna.org/members/newsletter/06december.pdf · Verein Deutsch Drahthaar/Group North America Executive Board ... documentdist@vdd-gna.org

posted in English!! Navigate the site and you’ll have a much better perspective of the mechanics of the German testing system and understand why we are so dedicated to it. Just click on the “Service” section and scroll to the literature that interests you. The section that I mentioned as one that would likely inspire many members is the “Merit Awards System”. The JHGV provides recognition of Club, Breeder, and individual Handler milestones in the way of awards; special plaques and pins, for the testing, breeding, and training of multiple Prize 1 Utility Tested (VGP) dogs. Review the requirements, perhaps the next litter you produce or the next dog you train will result in one of these distinguished awards. GNA has earned many awards due the dedicated activities of its members over the years. Many members may not have ever seen these awards or even be aware that they’ve been presented in recognition of our membership’s activities. Unless you attend a yearly function such as our Annual Meeting the chances that you will have the opportunity to see and handle them are pretty remote. Yet, you’ve earned them! Look for them on the Trophy Table at the 2007 Annual Meeting in Denton, Texas. The other item I want to comment on in this column is the Announcement, included in this Newsletter, by the CanAm Deutsch Kurzhaar Klub (VCDKK). Why are we promoting a club dedicated to the Deutsch–Kurzhaar? Well, we’re not promoting the breed; we’re promoting what is intended to be a sister JGHV club. The five men spearheading the drive to gain JGHV recognition of the VCDKK are friends of ours and friends of GNA. They have assisted us with judging responsibilities and training of our DDs. Most of them are also long time and supportive members of GNA. After reading Dave Peasley’s announcement and considering the spirit of his appeal for help in fulfilling their goal of JGHV recognition, please offer your help in whatever way you can. Connie and I wish all of you and your families a joyful holiday season. May the spirit of Christmas stay remain in your hearts and minds throughout the coming year. For our Drahthaars, Bryon

Vice Chairman’s Notes Our testing system together with our breeding qualifications and requirements are undoubtedly the cornerstones of the success of our breed, the Deutsch Drahthaar. Thanks to all the owners, handlers, performance judges, breed show judges and breeders for their work and participation during the very busy 2006

season. Without the time, effort and dedication of all of these individuals it is not likely we would remain successful. The year 2006 saw significant changes in the VZPO rules and the conduct of our breed tests. These changes were

most significant in the requirement that a handler not correct a dog that was not behaving properly during some aspect of the test (for example playing with a duck). I await the analysis by Geoff Matthews, our Director of Testing, concerning our pass rate for this falls HZPs. Perhaps of even more significance are the variances allowed by the JGHV to Group North America and Group Canada for testing dates, game animals, and terrain. A special thanks to Roger Green for his work with Wolf Schmidt-Körby to help the JGHV understand our special needs in North America. Our membership knows that the great plains are not known for their forests and that the Southeast Hunter Chapter has quite different climate challenges than the Midwest North Chapter. Fox for training are not as easily available for VGP preparation as they are in Germany. JGHV has made some basic adjustments to the test rules and regulations at or request “on the basis of varying climate, geographic conditions and biological conditions.” Changes in testing dates include the following: VJP January 1st- June 30th, HZP and VGP September 1st- March 1st of the following year. The Eastern cottontail and Black and White tailed jackrabbits are officially recognized as acceptable tracking game. Raccoon, bobcat and coyote may be substituted for the fox in VGP forest work, and blood tracks may be done in forest, brush, or prairie depending on the climate conditions of the area. All of these changes are positive. Of particular interest is how the Chapter Directors of Testing will use the new time available in the first quarter of the year for potential HZP and VGP tests. Chapters remain the key building blocks for our success. Chapters have really strengthened the past several years and are congratulated for their increase in testing opportunities (not only number but geographic opportunities) but also for training days and social events that include our families. Several of our Chapters are now as large or larger than some of the Groups in Germany! The annual meeting for GNA has been move to January to better meld with the annual VDD meetings in Germany, Many of our Chapter meetings will be held in February. Look on the website at your chapter page and see if you can make plans to attend, These important meetings will be used to gather information to set training, testing and activity dates, They represent great opportunities to meet other members and find training and hunting opportunities. Our trip to Maine for woodcock and grouse hunting was a great success!! Kathryn and Dennis Higgins were gracious hosts and are thanked again for donating this hunt for the auction at our annual meeting. We took two of our puppies for the hunt and also had the use of Loci, Dennis, VGP dog. Loci showed the pups what to do and I have the tapes in my brain for replays of beautiful pointing work in the lush Maine forests. Remember… To breed versatile dogs is an art To increase their numbers a blessing To maintain their inheritance a duty To improve it our biggest wish Best wishes and Waidmannsheil, Edward Carney, M.D. Vice-Chairman, VDD-GNA

From the Breedwarden You will notice in this newsletter and on the website that there are several Breed Shows scheduled for the early part

of 2007. VDD Breed Show Regulations require that a minimum of 5 dogs must be entered and judged in order for the Breed Show results to be accepted. The entry deadline for all Breed Shows is 30 days prior to the Breed Show. If there are not sufficient entries in hand on the entry deadline, the Breed Shows

will be cancelled. This is due to the fact that judges traveling to Breed Shows must have sufficient time to make travel arrangements. Many members entering Breed Shows have the impression that they must have all of the requirements such as the HD evaluation in hand before they can send their entry. Many times some of these requirements aren’t received back to the owner before the entry deadline. Members waiting to send their entry in for this reason may be contributing to the cancellation of the Breed Show altogether. Send the entries before the deadline. If documentation of any requirements haven’t been received yet, write “Pending” on the form and send it. In another section of the NL is a report that I have been working on lately. One of the biggest complaints I get from members at Breed Shows is that they don’t get any kind of report showing how their dog was judged in each individual Conformation, Coat, and Temperament subject. This report is computer generated and in the future could be printed and given to the owner at the Breed Show. There may still be some small tweaking done to the report before it is ready to be implemented. Hopefully in the future this will be a tool for breeders to use to get a better understanding of what they need to do to improve the breed in America. Lynn S. Whiteley VDD/GNA Breedwarden

From the Business Manager The membership renewals have been arriving at a good

pace and I want to thank everyone who has sent their renewal in early. If you are not in that group, please let me know what your intentions are as soon as possible. We hope you will continue to keep your membership current. Also, breeders please remind your new puppy owners that they must be a member of a JGHV affiliated club, such as GNA, in order

to participate in the upcoming spring tests and planning in advance is much preferable to trying to get it done at last minute. Looking back over the 2006 year I hope that your year has been as fun and rewarding as mine has been. Hunting seasons will be drawing to a close and I hope that all of you

have had some memorable hunts. The GNA Annual General Meeting will soon be taking place at Denton, Texas, on January 25-27, so if you have not already, please consider attending. There will be a full schedule of events and plenty of time to recount but of course not “exaggerate” your hunting stories! The VDD membership pin is now available from the Materials and Documents Manager. This is a bronze pin and is available in either a round or oval shape while supplies last. The price including shipping is $3.00 each. If you have questions or concerns, please contact me or any of the other Executive Committee members. Waidsmansheil, Jim

Judge Development I had a wonderful experience at the 5th Armbruster in McConnelsville, OH. I was very pleased with the turn out at the test and seminars. Wolf Schmidt Korby had a couple of busy days helping GNA understand the changes to the VZPO. I hope all who attend now have a better understanding of the change in the regulations. We will continue to provide seminars to help clear up any confusion. Continuing education is a must for us all. I have been working with chapters on coordinating seminars for this upcoming year. I also had the pleasure to judge a few days in regions of the country that I had never judged before. I went to Logan, UT for a HZP and judged the first ever VGP in Texas. I hope that every judge will take the opportunity the next time you get a call from an out of chapter test director. This is a great way of gaining knowledge and sharing your experience with other judges. The seminar for members that are wishing to pursue becoming an apprenticeship is going to be done at the chapter level. This is a required seminar and will take a full day to present. Please contact your chapter chairman for details of when this will be available in your chapter. The following seminars are scheduled. 1/25 Denton, TX Judging and Directing an HZP & VGP GNA Annual Meeting Shane Deford & Geoff Matthews 2/3 Hamilton, GA Introduction to the Hunting Dog System Forrest Moore & Jim Seeley Contact Forrest prior to attending. 2/3 Wapello, IA Judging the VJP Leonard Chase & Dan Hoeper 3/2 Cheyenne, WY Introduction to the Hunting Dog System Mark Heuer Contact Mark Heuer for location. I am working toward 100% electronic archive of all apprentice reports. I would ask that apprentices send me copies of your reports electronically. Hopefully before the spring testing gets under way I will have an e-mail ready

version of the evaluation Formblatt. The other form that I am working on is a GNA use only evaluation form. This form will have more detail about the apprentices’ use of the regulation and performance. This new form will be of value to me and the apprentice to assess how they are progressing. The 2005 Breed Books are now available to all GNA

members if they so desire. This past spring, GNA received permission to print 300 Breed Books here in the USA. In the past the GNA was limited to 100 Breed Books from Germany and there were not even enough books to meet the needs of all registered Kennel members. With the printing made available with assistance of NL Editor Larry Houck and printed in Watertown SD, GNA now has the opportunity to make available to many more of its members a current year Breed Book. Many persons who may be just getting started in the breeding program will want to start collecting Breed Books so that they may look up 2005 litter information. Pages and pages of information such as litter results, test scores, Stud dogs that were used during the breeding year, and information of the 2005 Hegewald are all included in the Book.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Meeting in Denton, TX. Shane Deford VDD-GNA Director of Judge Development

Gust tracked with more conviction than I have ever observed in training. There was no blood visible. His nose was glued to the ground and he was relatively slow and

very steady. We had a live buck run across the track about 20 yards in front of us at one point. Gus never lifted his head even when he crossed that hot track. We did practice distraction training. There were a couple of sharp turns and a lot of brush. After about 450 yards this is what we came up with. The track was 26 hours old with only a very small amount of blood in the first 15 yards. We never saw a drop after that. It was incredibly rewarding! When we were done we went a mile done the road and I shot a woodcock over a point by Gus. Tonight we got one goose and one duck in a cut cornfield behind my house. I love these dogs! SUPPLEMENTS By Martin Coffman, DVM

Without a doubt, one of the most common questions I get from both our sporting dog clients in the clinic and owners and trainers I meet at events concerns nutritional supplements. Everyone wants to discover a magic power or potent cocktail that will give their dog more stamina and help overcome fatigue. For many years my standard answer has been, and still is, that you already have the best supplement available in your kennel and that is just another handful of dog food. This assumes that you are feeding one of the recognized premium-type foods that provide optimal nutrition for athletic dogs. And, on paper, this certainly is true. Analysis of everything from raw liver to cottage cheese proves that the best overall “supplement” is just a little more dog food if the dog does, in fact, need something extra. Regardless, there are times when a handy treat or replenishment product can benefit a hard-hunting dog. Typical scenarios are all day hunts, abnormally warm weather, or even abnormally cold days. We will look at the characteristics of an appropriate field supplement but one word of caution: there is no substitute for conditioning. Regardless of nutrition, dogs should be acclimated to exercise over a period of weeks or months. I am cautious about recommending a certain level of exercise in print because dogs vary in age, health, and body score (thin to obese). But, with my own dog, who is a 4 year old, very healthy dog with a good athletic “finish” on her, I work her up to 3 miles of running 3 days per week at about 8-10 mph (off an ATV). For her, this has been ideal but you and your veterinarian should evaluate your dog to determine the best level of physical conditioning for that particular animal. A dog preparing for a 2-day VGP needs more work than my personal hunting dog. Hunters have carried stuff in their vests for years to give dogs in an effort to provide an energy “bump” during and after hunting or competitive events. There have been a number of products available for purchase that ostensibly provided this energy replenishment. Through connections and just being around, I have been able to actually use many of these products. To really assess their benefit, a laboratory-type controlled environment would be needed to

measure various blood parameters, oxygen consumption, etc. My empirical observations afield have to be considered rudimentary but, frankly, I have not seen any great increase in performance of my dogs as a result of most of these products. Again, I haven’t been measuring anything. Just observing. Despite this lack of hard evidence, I, like everyone else, like to give my dog something periodically during a hunting trip. As a youngster, I would share the cold biscuit and sausage my Mother had provided me and that might have done as much good as anything I have tried. But, current products on the market have a much better formulation than that big-old cat head biscuit. One of the controversies around supplementing the athletic dog involves electrolytes. For years, the consensus has been that dogs do not need electrolyte replenishment because they do not sweat like humans and horses. In those two species, electrolyte replenishment is crucial during endurance activities. The problem I have always had with this concept is that, since dogs lose most of their moisture through their breath, why hasn’t someone measured the electrolyte loss in the moist breath of hard working dogs? Despite a fairly aggressive investigation of the research literature, I have not found a paper that has measured electrolyte loss in doggy breath. (If you know of one, please send me the reference.) In the meantime, it stands to reason in my view that the moisture lost in the panting dog is not pure H2O but must contain some sodium, potassium, and other electrolytes that are needed for bodily function. The reason this is important is that many of the products being offered today to owners of athletic dogs are, essentially, electrolyte replacers. Now, there is plenty of work that documents the value of glycogen replenishment and “carb-bumping” in our dogs, but the electrolytes have been “poo-poo’d” by researchers. Maybe they are right, but, again, I cannot find documentation of the loss of or lack of loss of electrolytes in the panting dog’s breath. This brings us back to the selection of a supplement for hard-working, athletic dogs. While there is no documentation of the need for electrolyte replacement in the dog, there is, really, no documentation that it should NOT be done either. So, until I discover that proof, I want to give my dogs electrolyte replenishment because, to my knowledge, it can’t hurt and it might help. Plus, I want some type of energy replacement too in the product, which usually takes the form of maltodextrin, an excellent source of quick energy for dogs. There may be a number of products like this on the market, but several months ago, I discovered K9 Restart*, a neat white powder in a handy package that can be either mixed in the food or mixed in water for carry in the field. K9 Restart has both electrolytes and maltodextrin on the ingredient panel. The thing I liked about this particular product is that there is minimal waste, i.e. you don’t mix up a bunch of it for the week, but just use what you need on a daily basis either in the food or in a small bottle of water. I began selling this product in our clinic and now we are using it for pregnant and lactating bitches and older geriatric pets too. But, mostly I use it myself on my own dogs. At about 6 tablespoons in a pint of water, they get about 150 calories out of the bottle. Currently, there seems to be more and more of these products out there for us to use. K9 Restart is the one I

have had the most experience with, so I like it the most but I am sure there are other good products available. Regardless, the main thing is to choose a product that provides energy and, I think, electrolytes too. *As a disclaimer, Dr. Coffman wanted us to advise you that he now has a consulting role with the manufacturer of this product. Only your name and community of residence will be published. Jim Wion makes these comments on a letter that was written to him this month. “ . o“That’s my huntin’ dawg” is a phrase that has been with me for some time. I first heard the phrase used by a member to describe his dog that was performing quite nicely during a Utility Test. That dog went on to score well and I believe it was that handler’s first Utility Test. It was also my first experience as a handler at a Utility Test and my dog did not pass until the following year, although he did perform some phases well at that test and was a very good hunting dog. I do not get much positive feedback, but occasionally I will get something meaningful (at least to me) and I wanted to pass along the attached note from Gerald Schulz, a first time handler. Some dogs can be late bloomers and these unsolicited comments show to me the importance of the VDD breeding program and giving a dog the opportunity to develop inherited skill”.

Dear Sir: Please accept my renewal dues of which I understand are $80.00. I had thought after an unpleasant or I should say a very disappointing puppy test with my puppy Bandit this spring, I was not going to pursue any involvement in any fall testing. Also at my age of 63 I know I am not going to pursue any breeding program. So I didn’t see any need of staying a member of the GNA organization. Then this fall this magnificent dog showed me what a truly great dog he was at only one year old and I realized that it is his background and through the efforts of this club and the requirements necessary to be what they are. I can’t thank you all enough for the privilege of my association with this marvelous dog and the great organization. News from Your Deutsch Kurzhaar Friends

We are pleased to announce that the name of the DK-Canada Club has been changed to Vereinigter [United] CanAm Deutsch Kurzhaar Klub (VCDKK) and that the club will move forward with new leadership. This change was made with the approval of the Deutsch-Kurzhaar Verband, e.V. (DKV) to facilitate the integration of members from both Canada and the United States of America. The new leaders are all experienced and dedicated:

Dave Peasley, President [email protected] Ken Elliot, Vice President

[email protected] Matt Oaks, Secretary/Treasurer

[email protected] Tom Skinner, Breed Warden [email protected] Dan Arndt, Director of Testing

[email protected] Stacy Dimou, Director of Judge Development [email protected] Gary Fleming, Director of Communications [email protected]

Over the last several years, many friends of the DK in North American and Germany, including breeders, owners and Verbandsrichters expressed an interest in forming a DK club that would exclusively embrace the German traditions of breed purity and testing. To that end, the officers decided to request the above change in order to reestablish the spirit, intent and letter of the German breeding and testing system for the DK in North America. The club By-laws include prohibition of breeding DK to non-FCI-registered and/or DKV-breedable dogs, e.g., DK to AKC GSP. Violators will be expelled from the club.

YOU BE THE JUDGE This column is developed from the “Questions on Test Practices VZPO” 3rd Edition. The questions were answered in consultation with the Studbook Commission and the Studbook Keeper. The column consists of actual questions and answers of actual test situations and scoring. It acts as a supplement for the test regulations. The intent of the column is to provide information about situations that judges may encounter when they are judging tests. The Third Edition of this manual was published in 1989. Any changes to the VZPO Regulations after the print date will not be reflected in this column. 10/81 Nose {Nase} Evaluation at a VJP As long as our actual test game was the partridge, the

applicable provisions were hardly ever a cause for difficulty. They fully and completely corresponded to the demands that we placed on the field dog. Uncertainty did not arise until the pheasant, with its increasing numbers, gradually became at least as common a test game species, and in some places even the primary test game species. Because of the pheasant's different behaviors and habits, the search for this game bird places different demands on the dog than the search for partridge. The pheasant tends to seek out relatively dense cover in which the scent of a single stationary bird does not spread far; the likelihood that even an efficiently searching dog with a keen nose who is not 100% focused on pheasant will run past pheasants in heavy cover is extremely high, and certainly many times higher than is the case for partridges. All judges are likely to be aware of this danger. In our case, however, the question is whether it is even possible to speak of "running past game" when a dog working on a particular piece of game does not find additional game in the vicinity. And the answer to this question is a resounding no.

Question:

At a VJP, a dog finds multiple hares in the first search. He steadfastly points all hares and shows absolute obedience on them. Three times he is placed on a track, but does not follow it to the end even though he does perceive the scent.

At additional opportunities, he follows the fourth and fifth tracks approximately 100 meters each. The dog gets "sufficient {genügend}", 3 points, in the tracking category. For Nose {Nase}, the judges grant "good {gut}" -- 6 points. The reasoning they give for these scores is that the dog could not follow the hare tracks to the end because of the faults in nose quality.

Is this reasoning correct? Answer: The answer to the question is negative.

In general, a dog who finds multiple hares has a very fine nose. In contrast, a hare track with no special difficulties can be followed to the end, even with merely sufficient nose quality, if appropriate tracking willingness exists. Since this dog had already shown absolute obedience for all hares seen, he had already been subjected to rigorous training prior to the test. This training probably had a detrimental effect on willingness to track.

§ 18, Par. 2 VZPO states that a fine nose is demonstrated during the search in the frequent finding of game during the search and additionally through the detection of game at long distances, and through briefly marking songbird scent.

During tracking, particular attention must be paid to the dog's reaction to losing the scent, intersections, and re-finding the scent. What we mean here is not following the scent to the end, but rather perceiving the scent with the nose.

In summary, it can be said that the reasoning the judges gave for the reduced score for Nose {Nase} was incorrect 9/70 Evaluation of Search {Suche} §§ 19 and 31 VZPO Question: At a VJP or HZP, a dog hunts a not entirely small field with cover. He finds a pheasant which he points well. The pheasant runs off. While tracking, the dog encounters a

second pheasant which freezes, and which the dog points for a fairly long time, until the handler flushes it. Immediately thereafter, the dog takes up a track (probably of the first pheasant which ran off), follows it until shortly before the end of the cover, at which point the pheasant flies off.

The next dog, called up and released immediately after this work, goes through the same field again and finds three additional pheasants in it.

There is debate among the judging team as to whether the first dog, which otherwise performed a very good search, has earned a "very good {sehr gut}" in Search {Suche}, because he did not find the three additional pheasants in the area searched. What judgement should be rendered? Answer:

We would be making nonsensical, excessive demands on even the best field dog with the keenest nose if we were to require this dog who is on the scent of game to now also find additional game a distance from "his" game. In our example, the candidate has earned a "very good {sehr gut}" in Search {Suche}. 16/66

and Obedience {Gehorsam} at the HZP §§ 31 and 41 VZPO

Question: A dog demonstrates a very good, lively and systematic search in a field with vegetation that is not overly tall. He does not want to enter a beet field where the growth is very tall and dense, despite the fact that game is demonstrably in it. The judges have differing opinions: one wants to reduce the score for Search {Suche}, another for Obedience {Gehorsam}, and the third can't make up his mind.

Who is right? Answer: Without a doubt, there is a weakness in the search. It is entirely possible that this weakness will go away in a very

Page 15: Verein Deutsch Drahthaar/Group North America - vddgnaoldsite.vdd-gna.org/members/newsletter/06december.pdf · Verein Deutsch Drahthaar/Group North America Executive Board ... documentdist@vdd-gna.org

www.VDD-GNA.org

short time and the dog will demonstrate a flawless search even in tall, dense beets. In fact, this is very likely. However, when the dog does not show this at an HZP, it must receive a lower score in the Search {Suche} category. § 31 VZPO requirements for the highest score in Search {Suche} include the will to find and methodicalness. A dog who absolutely will not take to the beets despite commands also demonstrates faults in obedience. However, we must make a clear distinction between whether the dog absolutely refuses to enter the beet field at all and whether he does in fact go in, but once there either searches only halfheartedly or does not search at all.

JGHV Chairman Report The following is an excerpt of the Holiday Greetings delivered by JGHV President Werner Horstkötter to the Executive Committee at their Business Meeting on December 4th, 2005

Reflections As We Welcome the New Year

March 2006 marks the end of the legislative period of the incumbent Executive Committee members; we will have elections for a new Committee as is required by our Constitution. I could use this time to report on this Committee’s activities over the past 4 years, but as I have updated you routinely, I prefer to reflect on the progressive route the JGHV has taken in terms of fully embracing a variety of hunting dog breed clubs. Foremost must not be the areas of responsibilities that we, the people, want to assign but what needs to come together in our never-ending endeavor to hunt with as little stress to the game as possible. As the Teckel dog is not suitable for a field search, the pointing dog cannot enter a den to drive out the fox. Many different hunting dog breeds have proven themselves useful in our drive hunts. Let’s keep one thing in mind; our dogs must perform reliably and efficiently, and have to be put to work where they will be most useful. Another positive result of the JGHV integration efforts are the revised Rules and Regulations for Association Judges. The new VRO will come into effect on January 1st, 2006. At that time, JGHV delegates the implementation of the revised VRO to its member clubs. It will be their responsibility to select club members with a great level of integrity for the nomination of Association Judge. No theoretical training can replace practical experience. It therefore remains imperative that a judge of hunting dogs must himself possess above average knowledge in the training and handling of hunting dogs. In this context, let me relate what we have learnt in the US and Canada. JGHV Vice President Wolf Schmidt-Körby has visited these countries on several occasions and presented Judges’ Seminars. These seminars were attended with great enthusiasm and highly successful. Our, meaning the Association’s, tests that were held in the US and Canada under the rules of VZPO, VGPO and VSwPO eventually led hunters to adopt a different concept of hunting. No longer was hunting considered a sport but an activity based on ethical and moral principles with a well-trained and well-performing versatile hunting dog in the field, forest and water. JGHV intends to actively support this development and in addition to VZPO, VGPO and VSwPO, which are already available in English, will have the revised VRO and the JGHV Constitution translated into English for the JGHV member clubs overseas. A great achievement by the International DD, DK and DTK Clubs is the recent ratification of a Cooperative Agreement between these clubs and FCI* President Hans Müller and VDH** President Uwe Fischer. The Agreement is the FCI commitment to support on an international basis the implementation of its standards regarding hunting dog

performance and versatility, and the compliance with its breed standards. We have begun planning a fun and informative annual meeting. Highlights include four sessions with herr Joerg Tabel from Germany. He and his family have been at the forefront of the development of the DD and he is particularly known as a JGHV and Blood Track training expert. Herr Tabel will speak about Blood Track Training, German Hunting Traditions and the future of DD and also about those changes to the VZPO that have so many scratching their heads.

A busy day is planned for Friday January 26th starting with a Breed Show. There are not many breed shows scheduled for the Winter so take advantage of this one. For the afternoon, we will move over to the world class Dallas Gun Club (DGC) for a fun Skeet shooting competition that should be memorable. The meeting will continue at the DGC for the evening program that will start at 5 PM with a Social Hour and continue at 6 PM with a classic Texas Bar-B-Q.

DD belt buckle made of high quality solid pewter. Size is 3 ½”wide X 2” high. Excellent clasping hook for belt. Made in Canada Available by GNA member Ron and Sherry Nichols of Nova Scotia. Price $30. which includes shipping. Order in USA from Larry Houck, 1206 Skyline Drive, Watertown, SD 57201

After dinner, we are going to start a new tradition for the Winter AGM by having a Stud Dog Review. This will be held in order to present to the membership a good survey of Stud Dogs available here in the US.This will afford people the chance to be around the stud dogs that are being used for breeding. Herr Tabel will also present a seminar on German Hunt Traditions and the Future Use of the DD. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain a historical understanding of where our wonderful DD has come from and where the future may be.

Great Christmas Gift!!!!

On Saturday January 27th, the morning will include two sessions pertaining to Blood Track Training your DD. Herr

We have other great items being donated so save your Christmas $$$$ and come ready to bid. In addition to the AGM agenda, remember that there is still some late hunting season left in the South to take advantage of at this time. So be sure to check into this for before or after the meeting. Also Denton is just 15 miles north of DFW International Airport so travel by plane or vehicle should be easy. Other don't miss attractions in the area include both a Cabela's and Bass Pro Shop, The Fort Worth Stockyards, and many great stores and sites in Dallas.

So plan now to attend. We have only 60 rooms set aside so please make sure to book your rooms early. What else will you be doing in the dead of winter? Please check the website for more details and Meal Reservations, Breed Show, and Stud Dog entry forms.

Apprentice Refund for Expenses Motion

The GPC proposes the GNA pays apprentice judges(VR and ZR apprentices) a set amount of funds for successfully completing the apprentice program, and upon acceptance as a judge by the JGHV. The GPC suggest that that this amount be set at $1000.00, but this amount is open for negotiations with the GNA BoD. The GPC is not in favor of paying any amounts before the apprentice is successful, as if the apprentice is not acceptable to GNA’s BoD and/or the JGHV then we have lost the money. It is especially expensive in our country for apprentices to meet the requirements for apprenticeship, and these funds would help defray the cost now born by the apprentices. This is not a payment to be a judge, but a form of reimbursement for his or her expenses. The GNA cannot continue to produce the number of pups we are each year and not be able to offer more test for these pups. The number of dogs needing tested out

number the number of test available, and the number of test held is limited by the number of judges available. This is a continuing problem that has always been a limiting factor for our dogs. By offering a reimbursement to successful apprentices this will appropriately cover some of their current out of pocket expenses, encourage more apprentices to participate and allow additional individuals to participate in the apprentice program that may not be able to at this time. 1) We still are in need of more volunteers to help out with Registration, at the Dallas Gun Club on Friday, and for the Auction.

The BRC held the first VGP ever in Texas. Four dogs were signed up w/ one turned away. Unfortunately due to health issues for dogs and handlers, only two dogs were run on test day. The test went very well with both dogs passing. Hopefully this should start a VGP tradition in a state that has finally held it's first.

Thanks to all who have offered to help. 2) We need auction items NOW. We have planned to have 30 first rate live auction items with at least the same number of silent auction items. We are not there yet. BR and GNA members please contact me with your item donations. Let's make this the biggest auction ever for VDD-GNA. This is GNA's only fundraising effort of the year. 3) We have 750 African Safari tickets to sell for our Big Rivers Chapter fundraiser. 100% of the sales go directly to our chapter for development purposes. Contact me or Tom Morgan for your tickets to sell and to buy. Check out the great trip in this NL. The drawing will be during the auction on Saturday January 27,2007. I want to thank Kevin Sherrodd and Chad Chrissup and our Judges for all their efforts to make this past fall testing successful. We have a busy testing agenda planned for '07. Get your pups ready. Stay in touch, enjoy the hunt and see you in Texas in January! Brandt Hardy Big Rivers Chapter Chairman Kevin Sherrod, Director of Testing Hello all. The Big Rivers Chapter has finally completed its fall testing season. We held HZP's in Oklahoma and Texas this year. The HZP in Oklahoma was a brand new test for us, and based upon the feedback, will likely become a regular event. We had 7 dogs run in Oklahoma. Due to the drought we used a last minute location provided by Chad Crissup that proved to exceptional.

We have VJP's coming up quickly this year. The test in Weatherford, Texas has become so large and popular that we will try an additional new test location, down South in Tilden TX (near San Antonio). Also look for a new VJP to be held in Kansas. Anyone that has potential quality test locations for fall tests or future spring tests in our chapter should contact me. Our Chapter is growing in quickly with new handlers and additional test locations are constantly needed.

We had 13 dogs run in Lake Jackson Texas from as far as Illinois, Nebraska, Utah, and Colorado. This late test has become to earn the title of "The Arm-Twister" because of the number of local, and out of state handlers it attracts each year. There are usually a large number of handlers that are desperate for that last chance to run an HZP. Nathan took home the coveted "Mesquite Award", a new traveling trophy donated by Manuel Gonzales and myself. The purpose of the "Mesquite Award" is to promote water performance in our DD's. This new award will return and be awarded each year at the "Arm-Twister" (Texas' HZP).

Along with tests, we must have training. Take the initiative to organize some local training days. Get me the information to me and I will get the notification out for you, and help to get a judge to attend the event. You don't have to be a judge or experienced handler to hold a training day. All you need to be is motivated to help the dogs. "Drahthaars vor allem" Kevin Sherrodd

ATLANTIC CHAPTER NOTES

Our VJP schedule looks good with three tests set: March 17-18 in Mifflinburg, PA, March 24-25 in Carlisle, PA and April 14-15 in Woodstown, NJ. If you will be running a pup in one of these tests, please contact the test coordinators (contact info in on the test schedule page) as quickly as possible to secure your space, as they frequently fill up quickly. If you wait until the last minute, and a test does not seem to have enough registrants, it may cancelled, forcing you to travel outside the chapter to get a test space. (Please, if you haven’t already, seriously consider buying or borrowing a copy of the Test Regulations. Knowing what is expected of you and your

Something Special pup will go a long way tword a prepared and enjoyable experience.)

With dogs and tests, dogs and trials, dogs and hunting, every once in a while, something happens that just knocks your socks off. Although these are unusual occurrences, the heart or talent of the dog is what normally does it for me, this one was different from the norm. These are things dog guys/gals live for, and if you don’t understand I can’t explain it. This one was even more different because it involved a uncommon level of dog and handler teamwork, I call it amazing, many call it cooperation. Here’s how it happened.

If you are a new member and would like to see a test first hand, please check the test schedule page and contact the coordinators for more information. Everyone is encouraged to attend to get the knowledge first hand and see what is expected. We hope that the comraderie and connections made with other members will be of benefit as you prepare your pups for their tests and make friends to hunt and train with for years.

I know that with hunting season still going, it is difficult to determine your training needs for the spring and summer, but the people who are organizing those days are starting on permits now. If you know that you will be training for a test in 2007, get in touch with Jon Prescott, Morris Plains, NJ 973-656-0531 or [email protected] and ask about opportunities in your area. If we know that there is a need, then we can try to accommodate it.

This past Sept. the Wild West Chapter was hosting a VGP, a couple of my training/hunting partners, Derek and Mike Burden were entered. I was judging in the other group, but got to see enough to be impressed. We started the day with both groups together at 6500 to 7000 feet in 6-8 inches of Utah’s best, fresh, champagne powder. The high temperature on the car thermometer was 28F this Sat. while Mother Nature did her best to add to the snow total. As judges, we did the best we could to get thru the forest work but blood tracks in the snow were out of the question. So, having lost some entries to Mothers Nature’s tantrum, we headed down to find the snow line and try to put out some blood, to track yet this day. Derek and Axel v.den drei Teufein, were doing well and still in the test and drew the third track. With the two tracks ahead of him consuming some extra time, the day was growing dim when his judges grabbed the pig and headed for his track. After debriefing/scoring in our judges group, we followed post-haste. Upon arriving at the track, several miles furthered down the canyon, we learned the judges and Derek had started the track in the dark. The judges had given Derek the option of running in the morning on another track, but Derek told them the dog could do it. So GPS and flashlights in hand, they had headed out. Shortly after that, when we arrived, the forest was cold, silent and dark.

We do have chapter pins and decals available for purchase. Contact Scott Shirey, Carlisle, PA, 717-245-9808 or [email protected] for more information. With our chapter continuing to grow, there are more opportunities for getting together in new areas and getting more involved. So be sure to let the chapter board members know your needs, volunteer your time to help out at training days and tests or mentor that new member. Remember that all of these events depend upon participation, so come out and enjoy the benefits of being a member of GNA. Congratulations to Joe Aumann for passing the NAVHDA Invitational with VC Huskar vom Wiredhaus. I would like to list the rest of you who showed such strong performances with the DD’s in the NAVHDA tests this year, but there are so many, that would not be practical. So..Congratulations all for showing everyone outside our Group what an incredible dog a DD is.

Derek’s dad Mike was just a tad excited. As all you dad’s and mom’s can understand. Mike filled us in, that Derek was fine with it and did not want to come back up the canyon in the morning to run his blood track. Still, a track in the dark!? How could he tell if the dog was on? How could he help the dog if needed? He trained all summer for a shot in the dark? Slowly the minutes ticked by, then a light was spotted coming up on the forest road! And as the truck braked to a stop, a huge smile appeared above the cab, lit up by the glow of the red brake light. “We did it” explained Derek in triumph! Going down the track in the woods, Axel had gotten off on some grouse and after flushing them and getting a single call back, Axel and Derek had gone nonstop, to the end of the track. Derek’s back was sore for a week after all the attaboy’s he absorbed!! Down the canyon, to food and bed, was the next stop, as Sunday would dawn a busy day. For in addition to Axel’s VGP field and forest work, Derek was handling Delany v. den drei Teufeln in the HZP. In fact, he was the whole show for the other judging group. By two o’clock Sunday afternoon, Axel and Derek finished the job they started in the snow, earning a 302/II in the first VGP for both of them. Delany earned a 164 HZP. Two

Two weeks later, I was handling in VGP, although Eggy was doing well, self induced stress was beginning to get my shorts in a bunch. My thoughts somehow turned to Derek and Axel, and taking a queue from them, I began to relax , trust the dog, and enjoy the test. Sometimes a new “dog”, CAN teach an old one what he should have learned long ago!

Thanks for the education and more importantly, the inspiration, Derek and Axel! Waidmannsheil!

Great Lakes Chapter Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! I hope that all are having a superb hunting season and fully enjoying their time outdoors with their fine hunting Drahthaars. I know things have been good here in the GLC, with all the photos fellow members have been emailing me. Keep em coming, I really enjoy them, and we will try to get a slide show put together for next summers Family Fun Days. Those of you that have more, please get them on their way. The dates for this year FFD should be posted sometime in the following months, and looking forward to a large turnout.

Otmar Klamp (R front) is presenting the “oak branch” to the hunter who shot the largest boar of the day. Note how the game is laid out

with the “oak branches surrounding it in a rectangle around the wild boar and foxes.

This is the report from Otmar and Krista Klamp of Niederwallmenach, Germany. “On 7th October we have had our big drive hunting with about 40 hunters. It was a big event and we had wonderfull sunny weather . only a little rain during the noon break - just like ordered!!: The drive hunt produced 5 wild boarsand 2 foxes. On the one pictrue you can see Otmar giving the "Bruch" to the Jadgköing" (=hunting king), who shot the most or biggest game. In this case the biggest wild boar. This king is to pay in the evening something to drink for everybody – “poor boy”! We had a lot of fun in the evening, stay together in the restaurant until midnight. We had a bavarian meal with "Weißwurst, Leberkäs, Sauerkraut and a lot of beer and Schnaps.”

For those of you that missed the 5th annual Armbruster Zuchtprufung, you missed one of the best fun filled weeks and best-organized event the chapter has put on. A huge thank-you again goes out to Dan Crusey and wife Heather for all their hard work. Donations to the prize table were overwhelming, and I would like to personally thank all that gave. Every handler went home with some great prizes, and from the reports I received, all were very pleased. Congratulations to first place winner Donny Zarra, and Duke for a job will done. And to all the handlers who participated, the Great Lakes Chapter would like to thank you for making this the largest Armbruster to date. We would also like to thank test director Jim Wion for putting together a group of great judging teams.

Several chapter training day events and seminars are

in the works ,and the first event is posted on the website and also within this newsletter. February 10, Bill English is coordinating and the chapter is hosting a Breed Show, at the Ramada Inn Montpelier Ohio. Along with this Breed Show, is scheduled a Blood Tracking seminar by chapter member, Marty Ryan. There will also be a seminar on Force Fetch Retrieving and the Complete Finish. With the new rules adopted in the HZP test , this is a very important seminar to attend, instructor yet to be assigned.

Well, that’s it for now- get out and enjoy what hunting seasons are left and we look forward to seeing everyone February 10 in Montpelier. Get your entries to Bill right away. Waidmannsheil Todd Seiler Chairman GLC

Jörg Tabel to conduct Blood Tracking Seminars in Texas & Georgia

Group North America Annual Membership Meeting

January 25-27, 2007 Denton, TX

Southeast Hunter Chapter Annual Chapter Meeting February 2-4, 2007

Hamilton, GA

Jörg or Joerg (pronounced YORK) was born in the "kennel" of Dr. Carl Tabel (author of the textbook DER JAGDGEBRAUCHSHUND, published in the 1960's and now enjoying the 13th edition.

The late Carl Tabel was a gifted dog handler and self-made dog psychologist (not a recognized profession, but an area of exciting interest!); Jörg grew up in an environment, where hunting and hunting dogs were a daily topic. He began training dogs and handling them at VJP's and HZP's for hunters at the age of 14 to earn some "pocket money". As a 17 year old enthusiast he passed the state's hunters exams. He later ran dog training sessions for dog handlers and their hunting dogs of any breed, encompassing 16 week-ends a year, over several years on behalf of the German hunting association. For a period of 10 years he served in his county on the committee of judges conducting the annual state controlled hunters' exams, a very rigid examination extending over a 3-day span.   He has trained numerous versatile hunting dogs and presented them at all Association's tests (VJP, HZP, VGP, Vbr, Btr, VSwP). Serving as judge at Association tests about 6 times a year has become an annual routine. Apart from this briefing, Jörg describes his life as "living in a constant state of advising dog handlers and new puppy owners and helping them in handling practical situations, preparing them for upcoming tests and the like."   His interest always focuses on hunting, hunting with versatile hunting dogs, never ever, however, without a dog. Jörg accumulated a profound expertise in training and handling dogs for blood tracking purposes, his self-declared "love".

Please join us in welcoming Jörg to the U.S. You don't want to miss the

wealth of information that he has to offer!

Assistants to the Breedwarden In assisting the GNA Breedwarden in covering the large land area of GNA there are two levels of assistants. ZR All Breed Judges (Zuchtrichter A & B); are authorized to carry out any of the duties of assisting the

Breedwarden. These include: 1- Tattooing and inspecting puppies 2- Inspecting kennels, and monitoring the condition of litters. 3- Certifying defects that would exclude a dog from breeding.

TA Tattoo Agents are authorized to carry out 1 and 2 above. CBW Chapter Breed Wardens can be authorized in one of the above levels. They can also be consulted in matters

such as logistics of tattooing and inspecting litters, and advice in complying with the Breeding Regulations.
