    Grammar vocabulary

In this book you will find simple explanations on how to use each Russian verb

of motion. In order to fully understand them, you will need to know some basic

    grammar concepts, such as these:

Verb: Its a word that expresses an action. For example, to read, to jump, etc.

Unidirectional (one-way) verb: Its a verb that expresses motion in one

single direction, from the point A to the point B. This motion happens, happened

or was happening only once. So, if we talk about a motion from A to B which

happens regularly, we already talk about a multidrectional verb.

Multidirectional verb: Its a verb that expresses motion in more than one

direction. It could be from A to B and back, from A to B on a regular basis

(happening more than once), from A to different points, going in circles, etc.

Verb tense: Its the form of the verb that indicates time. Like in English, in

Russian there are 3 tenses: present (I go, I am going), past (I went) and future

    (I will go).

What will I learn in this book?

In this book you will learn how to use Russian verbs of motion in the present,

past and future for beginners. What is a verb of motion? It is any verb that

expresses movement: to go, to run, to fly, to swim etc. In English these verbs

are as easy to use as any other verb. In Russian, however, verbs of motion are

more complex and descriptive, and we will need some time to learn them.

Russian verbs of motion are generally divided into 2 groups: those that express

a motion in one direction and those that express it in more than one direction.

For example, there are two Russian verbs which mean to go:

    - means to go in one direction, from the point A to the point B.

    - The verb means to go in more than one direction. It could be from

A to B and back or from the point A to many different points, in different places

    and directions.

The way to use Russian verbs of motion properly is understanding the difference

between these 2 groups. This book is going to teach you how to recognize

every situation that requires a verb of motion. Having identified the situation,

it will be easy for you to choose the correct verb and use it in its right form.

How should I work with the exercises?

In order to choose the correct verb of motion in the moment of speaking we

need to identify the situation properly and remember the right form of each

verb in present, past and future. Practice makes perfect. The exercises in this

book have been created to help you do it. These are the steps you need to

    take:

    - Read the tables carefully, making sure you understand every example.

    - Learn the forms of each verb in all the tenses.

    - Think of examples of your own for every situation described in the table.

Try to make your examples as original and personal as possible to remember

    them better.

    - Start doing the exercises. If needed, use the tables for reference. Try to

identify the situation in every sentence and explain the usage of every verb.

    - Use the key at the end of the book to check your answers. Analyze and

    correct your mistakes.

    - Try to do the exercises again without looking at the tables.

    - Take notes of the most difficult patterns.

    - Enjoy. Learning Russian requires effort, but it should be fun, too!

What should I know before reading this book?

This book has been created in order to introduce you to the concept of Russian

verbs of motion. This is not a general course of Russian language, so there are

some concepts (how to read Russian, grammar, vocabulary,...) which are not

explained here. It is advisable to know some basics of Russian language before

    using this book.

How should I use each table?

Every time we see a new motion (to go, to run, to fly,...) you will learn two

Russian verbs. Both will have the same meaning in English, but one will express

a unidirectional motion, and the other a multirirectional one. In the tables, the

unidirectional verbs will always be situated in the left-hand column and the

multidirectional verbs will be on the right. Besides, you will find a separate table

with all the forms of each verb in present, past and future.

We recommend you to go through the tables and exercises trying to understand

the logic of every motion. Little by little you will see a pattern that repeats itself

verb after verb. Although Russian verbs of motion are a complex topic, it is not

a random idea, and it follows a logic that you need to learn and understand.

    How to understand our tables

Have a look at the Table you see on the left. Do you need help to understand

it? Please read below the explanations to understand every Table you will see

at the beginning of each chapter in this book.

WHEN DO WE USE UNIDIRECTIONAL VERBS?

Action in progress: This is very simple. If we are now on our way to a particular

place (to work, to the park, to Moscow,...), we are clearly moving in one direction

(from point A to B). Thats why we use what we call a unidirectional verb.

Duration of the action: When we explain how long it takes to get to some place,

we use a unidirectional verb: It takes me 5 minutes to go to work.

IMPORTANT: Duration of the action only applies to single-direction motions,

because we only want to point out the time it takes to go from A to B.

Simultanous actions: This is when we are doing something (listening to music,

thinking about a friend,...) while we are on our way to a particular place. We can

define it as Action in progress + we explain what we are doing while moving.

Future plan: We express our plans about going to a particular place once:

Tomorrow Im going to a restaurant. In Repeated action in the future (see next

page) we plan to go more than once and we use a multidirectional verb: When Im

rich, Ill go to expensive restaurants.

Interrupted actions: We are going somewhere when something happens. This

is almost like Simultaneous actions and thats why we use a uniderectional verb.

Interrupted actions are usually used when talking about the past.

Table 2: Conjugation of the verbs - in all tenses

    present past

futureWHEN DO WE USE MULTIRECTIONAL VERBS?

Regular action: I go to the gym on Tuesdays, How often do you go to the

beach in summer?. Behind those go there are two motions: from point A (home)

to a final destination (the gym) + back to the original point (back home).

IMPORTANT: If the phrase implies going back home (home --> gym --> home)

(hotel --> beach --> hotel), then we need to use a multirectional verb.

Return trip in the past: When we say Yesterday I went to the cinema, we use a

multirectional verb because we took this journey: home --> cinema --> back home.

We imply that we went somewhere and we ALSO came back.

Repeated action (in the present or future), general truth, abilities:

Children go to school, Planes fly very fast, When Im rich Ill go to expensive

restaurants. These are general ideas, which are not happening right now, which

happen more than once and that imply a going back motion. If we put all that

together, we should understand that we need a muldirectional verb.

Expresing likes / dislikes: This is almost like a general truth. Only here we give

an opinion (I like going to school. I hate flying). Again, we talk about something

that is not happening right now, a general idea where we have a verb of motion.

Multidirectional motion: If we say Now Im driving in my car looking for a place

to buy pizza or Im walking in the park with my dog, we understand that we are

going in many different directions because I dont have a clear final destination.

IMPORTANT: The motion happens right now and yet we use a multirectional verb.

This is a very specific situation: moving with no particular final destination.

    Useful tips:

is a unidirectional verb which describes the action of going on foot in one sigle direction. On the other hand, is a multidireccional verb and usually implies going on foot there and back. Apart from the rules that you will learn in this book, you have to use your intuition to choose the right verb.

For example, a phrase with (usually), will most probably require a multidirectional verb. But sometimes phrases are more complex: , , (Usually, when I go to work, I listen to music). Is this a regular action or a simultaneous action? In this case, despite the use of , it is a simultaneous action and we need a unidirectional verb. As you can see, we need to use our intuition and common sense to find the answer.

    Useful tips:

Every Table 1 of each verb in this book describes similar situations. For example, once you understand the difference between Action in progress and Regular action you will be able to apply it to any verb of motion. Lets see an example:

    - . Since were using a unidirectional verb () we know that the taxi driver is somewhere on its way from point A to B.- . Maybe the taxi driver is now driving around looking for a new customer. Or maybe hes not driving right now and the phrase only wants to say that he drives on the streets on a regular basis. What is clear is that the muldirectional verb () is helping us understand that the taxi driver is not on his way to any particular place right now.

We always use a unidirectional verb when talking about :- (Time goes by). (Time flies).

This usage of the unidirectional verbs has a logical explanation, since time moves in only one direction and cant move backwards.

The same logic can be applied to and :- (Its raining). (Its snowing).

Literally, those phrases mean The rain is going and The snow is going. Rain and snow move only downwards. It never rains upwards from the ground to the sky.

    Useful tips:

Lets talk about Abilities. The verb (can / to know how to do something) clearly indicates a multidirectional verb, since it expresses a general ability: - / / (I can walk / fly / run).

On the other hand, the verb (to be able / can), can be used with both unidirectional and multidirectional verbs, depending on the context. Compare:- , . If they ask you to run right now to catch the bus you can say I cant run because Im very tired (unidirectional verb)- , . I cant run because I have a weak heart. You cant run at all, not just now (multidiretional verb).
