Modals
• Language Objective:
• Today we will practice forming sentences using various modals.
• Modals:
• can• could• will• would • shall • should• may• might• must
Modals• Parts of Speech: subject, verb, base verb, noun,
pronoun, complement• Application/Use: Modals are used to talk about
ability, possibility, certainty, and advice.
Modals are different from other verbs:• They don’t take an –s, -ed, or –ing ending. Example: He can drive. (not: He cans drive.)• We don’t use an infinitive after a modal. Example: He wants to leave. He must
leave.• In the negative form, put not after the model. Example: He should not drive
Some verbs are like modals: have to, be able to He can pay the rent = He is able to pay the rent
